Did We Just Find THE BEST Budget Racer?!

- This bike was quite the deal. It's a Kawasaki KDX200 that was acquired and brought back to life for the low, low cost of only about $220. For that price, if it could even run without lighting on fire, it would be a good deal. The only logical thing to do with the bike was to race it in every endurance race possible until it finally quit, so that's what we did.

I'm 67 years old. I bought a KDX 200 in 1984 new. I still have a blast on it ! Granted I don't ride it as long or hard as I did when I was still racing but, it still tickles me in the right places. Took a lot of finger pointing and chuckles from some "kids" last time on the starting line at a hare scramble. Then I roosted their asses to a 30 yard holeshot! How do you like me now? Hahaha love my antique!!!!
You still have the KDX200 you bought in 1984? Damn! That's awesome man, good that you still ride hare scrambles, I've only been riding my KDX200 2003, for a little more than a year now, it was my first motorcycle and it's such a fun bike, and has plenty of power for what I need it, people always come to me when I'm unloading it at the Enduro tracks, always hear good things about it!
I got an 86 last year not running and had the carb ran through and then I got busy with other stuff. The bike sat for a year and I never got too it until two days ago lol, mixed up some gas and threw it in the bike and thought well hear goes nuthin', on the second kick I actually got fire kicked her again and she lit up LoL, just about......my pants. I rode her around for about half an hour now I'm all ready to go racin' LoL, only problem is it's April here in Arizona and I'm wishin' I would of got that wild hair back about mid October, but man what a fun old bike, the thing rips when ya want it too and can just purr along when it needs too
"Bikes were givin up, people were breaking" 🤣🤣 you got me on that one
Absolutely love my '89. It's a way better bike than I am a racer. You'd probably be faster on a 250/450 but the kdx does exactly what you want and nothing that you dont.
It's a KDX, of course it's still kicking ass. I bought my 1st KDX new in 1988, and I still have it and ride it. It's plated., A white 88 KDX 200. Plus I have 2 more 88s and a 06.Long live the KDX. Ride safe my 2 wheel friends
Of course KDX are magic in a bottle
Genie in a bottle, when you rub it you don't have to ask twice. 😁
I got one for $1500 and runs perfect! Just needed new hand controls and a rear tire with actual grip. According to my friend, who has raced IXCR on multiple old and new ktm’s. “This thing handles the gnarly stuff better than any bike I’ve ridden. Yes, even better than my 2018 ktm 250xc.”
Just like the old Honda XR'S...those KDX bikes are just dead on reliable and easy to ride fast and safe.
Fast and Reliable yes, but my KDX 250 is the closest i can get to flying to close to the sun
20+ years ago, Someone talked me into getting rid of my CR 125 and getting a KDX 200. I went from amateur to expert in 1 year. It was an incredible bike for the time. Just had to keep the power valves changed regularly and it would run like a B. That being said, I love my KTM 300
I used my street-legal 1993 KDX250SR as a city commuter bike for years, racking up 60,000kms on the engine before needing to do any bottom-end work as such. Still got the bike with 65,000kms on the dial. It sits for months with no battery to worry about, and then bursts into life with a couple of kicks.
wow now i want to find a kdx.. sounds like a good back up bike on a truck.
Back up bike? It’s gonna be the main bike as soon as you ride it
I bought a used 89 KDX200 when I got back into riding after 5 years away. After a year, I thought it was holding me back and replaced it with a 93 CR250.
I was *WAY* faster on the KDX. Just like you said, it has just enough power to ride it like you hate it or lug through the slow stuff without beating you up.
KDX prices just spiked on Marketplace. “Well, price is pretty firm. I have another guy coming to look at it in a half hour.”
The KDX200 has always been a weapon in the right hands, ask Larry roeseler 👍
Picked one up for $500 a month ago! They run like a champ
Like the XR just one of the most dependable bikes ever made!
I was just about to unload my 05 220, then I saw this video. Now I'm rethinking it. It really is the energizer bunny of dirt bikes.
I picked mine up for $1100 a few years back. Absolutely love riding it and it's so easy to work on compared to modern bikes.
Yeah I picked mine up for 800 and let it sit for a year, went out two days ago put new gas in it and the damn thing fired up on the third kick, I couldn't believe it 😅
Got yourself a runner! And kudos on slipping the American Psycho clip in LoL
Gabriel, It's a shame Kawasaki doesn't make this bike any longer...I'm sure they would be able to compete with the BETA 200RR at a fraction of the price.
Ive owned 2 KDX 200s 10 years apart. I ended up now with a 21 KTM 250 and I still miss my old KDX.
These kdx200s cost upwards of $5000 in Australia haha
I just restored a 01 kdx 200 my first actual bike at 33 years old. It has balls and cant wait to run enduro here in Texas this looks so fun its insane.
I ride a 1989 Kdx with a fredette ported head and a 46mm kayaba front fork. It is my favorite bike, fast when you want to go fast, and great in any situation. Very underrated, thanks for posting this video!
This is my favorite video ever. Excellent job dude! 🔥
Glad you liked it! Couldnt have done it without you!
I second this comment.....damn now I have to look for one.
They kdx has a nice light ass end and a planted front end, great for swinging the rear around wherever you want to go. They are a blast, they make really good use of the power that they have and have good power, they are light and agile and still have good torque for the enduro riding.
Thanks again - another awesome video of fun where we feel like we’re along for the ride
Gabriel, Your moto channel is terrific. My interest in your high jinks was piqued with your DRZ 200 video. Then I discovered your recent KDX 200 racing video! You crack up this Old Man located on in SoCAL! Your story telling manner is fun, too. Many thanks for the effort you expend creating interesting videos. P.S. I posted your KDX video in the racing section of the long-standing KDX Riders forum.
Bought one new back in late '94(it was a '95 - the first KDX w/parameter frame). Loved it! So revolutionary! It was like a moto-x bike for the trail and so reliable! I think I paid just over 4K when anything comparable was closer to 8K. Such a steal!
Love my 06 220r with the FMF pipe and silencer. Woke it up real good.
I fucking LOVE LOVE LOVE my 2003 KDX 200. I decided to buy one partially because of this channel here. Now I've owned it for about 3 or 4 years and I still love it and ride it all the time. Incredibly versatile offroad dirt bike. The combination of great luggable, low-speed, low-RPM rideability and explosive top end makes it so damned versatile and easy to go have fun, no matter where you ride or what type of riding you feel like. It's super luggable because of the wide-ratio transmission, the fact that 2-strokes can just run really slow, plus the really short 1st gear means you can almost pick your way through technical sections at walking speed. So fucking versatile. Oh also: buy the front and rear Tusk gummy hybrid tires. Get rid of those hard-compound, motocross-style tires. The Tusk's are durable, long-lasting, truly gummy and give great traction on every type of surface, and are designed to be run at VERY low tire pressure. They're also dirt cheap compared to the equivalent Golden Tyre brand I've also used in the past. They also don't chunk even running on sharp lava rocks all the time. Amazing tires. I run around 8 PSI front and around 9PSI rear, along with heavy duty inner tubes.
It’s a great bike.
I grew up riding in the early 80’s.
Been on two and four strikes.
Enduros and motocross bikes.
Now in my early 50’s, just wanted a good all around bike.
Picked me up a perfect kdx220 for $1200.
Can’t beat it with a stick.
Me and my son have been watching your videos for nearly a year now. We have been restoring some old KDX's the past few months. I have an 89 200, (2) 94 200s and a 2002 220. The 220 has become my primary bike as of recently. We are originally from California and lived 20 minutes from Glen Helen, never knowing they held events like this. We are thinking of either shipping a bike, or buying a bike out there, flying out for these endurance races this next year. Will see if we can work that out. March this year was our first hard enduro we raced together, both on some heavy 4 strokes. after then we realized we used the wrong tools for the job. since then I been picking up KDXs that come for sale. We live in Hawaii so most of what we find is absolutely hammered. If you ever find your way to Hawaii we should meet up at Kahuku, I have a KDX I would be glad to let you can hammer on.
I just got one! A 95 for $1500, and it’s in great shape! I love it already. (I’m 61 years old and have been riding dirt bikes for decades. In addition, I’m an expert level observed trials rider.) I want to get another one to give to my son so we can ride them together… cool bikes
I have had a kdx 200 for years and I still love it. It will never leave me.
All these older bikes are gems with modern suspension tweaks and power upgrades.
Great channel Team Gabe! Keep up the great work! Gratefully, Dennis
for sheer fun factor on a bike, you can't beat it.
Man, that bike made a name for itself back in the day. I'ld be very glad to own one.
Probably won't ever happen but how cool would it be for kawi to bring it back maybe as a 300. I miss my '89 kdx200 such a fun trail bike!
Got my '90 KDX on trade for about $550 worth of pew-pew. Bought my current '98 KDX220 for $800. I beat the hell out of it and even teach noobs to ride on it. It's been crashed countless times and just keeps going. The myth, the legend, the KDX!
One of the best classics bikes out there.
That's awesome I definitely like my 22 year old XR650R
Excellent Excellent review!
I have an 84 that I love! The liquid cooled is super nice! And then we also have a 74 kdx 250 and that thing is fun too but it’s pretty beat to hell
still have my old 94 kdx250 love that bike
It’s 2024 just bought one yesterday for 900 dollars with a whole set of new plastics and I got it running in a day so excited for the snow to go away so I can see what it’s like
I raced a 200$ 1987 kdx200 in the idaho city 100 in 2016 . 100 miles of tight whooped woods . I took third in c class and it was the hardest thing ive ever done 👍👍
All truth, brother! I raced the '93 200 and it delivered everything I asked of it, and then some!
Yuppers...on my 3rd 200 and 1 kdx220. Owned a kdx200sr in Japan too. Used to terrorize sportbike in the tight mountains there. Find the cleanest, newest one you can. And RIDE
I still have mine...it actually looks like a newer bike because of the work I did on it, but it is a sweeeeeet bike. Not as fast as my racer YZ-250 WR but still fun.
"Something has gone terribly wrong" is my motto in life. Great video sir.
The kdx was still commonplace when I did hard Enduro in the 2010s. I don't see why it couldn't be competitive today. At low speeds they handle like a trials bike. My father raced them and later used the bike as a teacher bike for new riders
I bought a 2001 KDX200 for 1700.00 about three years ago,it came with oversized gas tank, two box’s of oil, filters, plugs.. an extra seat, levers.. manual and more stuff I can’t think of at the moment. I love that bike, starts first kick, makes a good rider even better and they are, in my opinion the best woods bike out there. My 99 KX500 is fun also but after a good ride I’m gassed, it requires a lot of energy to handle it well.
One of the most popular offroad bikes ever produced. Kawi was building an awesome offroad 2stroke long before KTM, Husky and the other euro bikes.
Had a 96 loved it
Update.. Me and my son decided we are going to enter the 24 hour Glen Helen race as a father and son 2 man team. We know it will be quite a task getting 2 bikes we can race shipped out there and set up, We plan to try and make it out for the 6 hour and both ironman them in March then fly back out in October for the 24. Hopefully we can pull it off. We are still thinking of shipping 2 of our KDX's. Wish us luck. I will be posting progress videos on @Whistler's Customs channel.
Man I got na air cooled and it is beast - this thing rips on single track. They roll new bikes when going through tight New England woods. It is a "girls bike" and a legend.
I got me a KDX 200 87 for 400 dollars all I had to do was get it running it’s a blast ❤
I've got a 2006 KDX in great shape for sale. Haven't ridden it in 2 years because of a back injury. For sale in Cincinnati area
It's always been between the KDX200 and the XR500/600 for me. Busy putting together a patched up 600 (in 500 frame), so maybe the KDX should be next? Hmmmm....
long live the 2-strokes
I’ve got a 92KDX had it for about eight years now needs rebuilt but it is reliable they are a little sneaky sometimes just get thrown off of them
The KDX 200 was one of the best bikes around when I was growing up.
Would be nice if Kawasaki released a super saweeet updated KDX220, or even a KDX300.
I know a cat who rides one of these steeds in our races too! She's a beaut of a beast indeed! (LilBJessup!!!!!!) Great video, as always.
Jeff Fredette likes them.
More please!
You my good friend with your awesome content have created a KDX tax!!!
keep quiet about it's awesome capabilities already sheesh!!
Sounds like the XRs need a KDX to chase around…. Search starts now.
I got a 1989kdx200 for 1200 and it is amazing
What's parts supply/availability like? Cranks, power valves, trans parts etc? I've always wanted one and they do pop up occasionally around here.
Had 3 kdx 200 great bikes😊
I’m about to pick up a 97’ KDX for $1500 from my neighbor. This video just reinforced my decision
I just got a 92 KDX200, love seeing the E series with the same graphics and plastics i can find on ebay hahaha. But freal this bike is a tractor in the low end of the power band and then goes ferrari mode when you get it in the pipe. The power to weight ratio is absurb compared to my 83 honda xl250.
Gabe did you guys switch fork springs or kept the absurbly soft OEM ones? im like 180 with gear and i had to toss some racetechs .40's in there
i raced them long ago WITH pipe it rocked I did step up to KTM 300 that said KDX ROCKED i n tight section I did lock it during race Classic rings to old my bad I do agree its great bike I was 2nd overall in cross country and endero
My opinion the best most reliable dirt bike ever made I’ve boycotted Kawasaki for dropping it and not updating it lol I had the 220 and someone stole it but luckily I’ve still got a 200
Would love to see you racing on a yamaha wr250r.
I've rode a crm and that was great all round but never had the chance to go on a kdx but I'd imagine pretty similar great bikes either way 👌👍
The CRMs are great bikes. The big three: KDX, RMX, CRM from that era are all brilliant bikes. The RMX and CRM were kept to 250cc throughout model changes, with the KDX going from 200cc to 250cc to 220cc.
@@TS50ER In Europe there was a 125cc version of all of these except the rmx
@@proarmy70 Do you know if a Honda CRM125AR was ever produced? The MK4 CRM with the 'Active Radical' system?
@@TS50ER No I am nut sure
What is your preferred 2T oil & premix ratio for the KDX?
I managed to find a 95 in Arkansas for $2k on Facebook, it’s a damn shame that I hesitated because now my buddy got it and I’m so jealous
Have a 96. Not in perfect shape but keeping it until I die!
More kdx action!!
My friend Logan had a 1998 KDX200 and I yearned to have that bike. 1st gear on it was a total cheat in terms of crawling over EVERYTHING
How do I make the suspension race ready? I’m blowing through it at any sort of race pace. Crashed multiple times because of it
Awesome I have an even older one
Bloody brilliant bikes
An 87ish kdx 200 smoothest running 2 stroke Ive ridden
It would be awesome for Kawi to make a updated model.
I blew up my water pump the actual impeller blades thing never lost power didn’t notice till end of the season when my trans was milky
I have a 92 absolutely love the old girl
how many hours were on the bike before you had to rebuild the top end?
I have got 5 KDX, they're best bike ever
I have owned about 20 dirt bikes over the years. My 1995 KDX 200 is not the fastest or the best handling bike, but it is the most dependable, bar none.
The Woods Assassin
The 85 to 90 kdx 200 was the best bike ever built!!!!
Hey, do you have pipe for Kawasaki kx125 1991?
I wonder how it would stack against an old KX250 in the races you do
I got a friend, he can whip me on a dirt bike, but one time, and only one time, I made him eat my dust.
The bike was a no title kdx 200.
I trade a Suzuki for a 82 KDX 175.. and never looked back.. I've had KX 125 and 250s. But I always had a KDX in the fleet. When the opportunity arose recently to pick a 94 KDX200. I jumped. Prolly over paid. it was neglected and a few bucks more and some TLC... She rips. As for the 175. Unfortunately, youthful ignorance I sold the 175 so I could fund a KX250. That one still stings when I see what a running KDX175 can go for these days. In all honesty I have had the best mechanical luck with the KDX. Like they said in the Vlog... They take a beating and keep yelling for more...
P.S. I still keep a Suzuki in the adrenal...
That's the bike for me !!
