This film and Beau's walking commutes inspired me to give my on-foot commute a go. Preferring to avoid the highway I made a 24 mile route on mostly trail and ran home after a day's work just a few weeks ago. It took me about 4 hours and the wildflowers were stunning!
Imagine if Beau walked into the office while everyone was there, covered in mud, dragging a filthy kayak behind him. They would have all looked at him and said to themselves "yep, typical Beau"
I didn't do something this extreme, but just started biking to work over the last 2 months. It's made the experience of going to work a lot more enjoyable. I'm no longer on autopilot during my commute. I start to notice many small things in the neighborhood that I usually miss. By the time I get to work, I'm more awake, alert, and in a better mood. The commute home is where it starts to get fun. I'm off in the early afternoon and the routes home are endless. Do I go for a nice cruise along the ocean? Make a huge climb up the mountain take some dirt/gravel trails? Ride along the reservoir? Typing this got me thinking of a video for you. You have done car, walk, and now kayak to work, why not bike? Now the time to get to work isn't going to be anywhere near as long as those last two, but what if you showed you can change your commute through nice detours or sights you want to see. Show that your commute doesn't always have to be on paved roads or the shortest routes.
"Pushing and pulling myself through a place that's usually a blur in my window, has reinvented this place I thought I knew." Don't know why, loved this line. Usually I too love walking instead of taking car or public transport. And when you walk, you notice every single detail on the route. When you drive, all you experience is either google map or irritating other drivers who think traffic rules are not made for them.
When I was 9-10 my aunt and uncle build a small raft with me. We went down the river that flows along our village. A couple years later I went fishing there with my neighbour (ca.50yo). He wanted to show me where the river runs deep and where the fishes stay and hunt. I could tell he was wrong and showed him a couple of really deep parts that I discovered with my aunt and uncle. I could tell him where the river had formed hidden caves under the embankment and how the ground was shaped like. Traveling down the river once had shown me much more about it than just walking along it for 30years. Great video, greetings from germany.

I did something like this once when I was a kid. My dad took me and my brother out, and we canoed from a small river out into the bay. We had to go under bridges and through storm drains could barely fit through. It was a lot of fun. One really memorable part was a storm drain we all had to lay down in the canoe to pass through. I remember being inches away from the top of the storm drain, and it was covered in spider webs too.
Really great demonstration of how human impact has not only damaged our environment but also damaged our ability to actually engage in and respect the environment around us.
Hey Beau I just wanted to say your videos have really helped me over this last few months battling drug and alcohol addiction. I get such a sense of inspiration and happiness from your videos that it brings me back to my childhood. Anyway mate keep up the awesome work might see you out there oneday
Beau, this is brilliant. This is downright inspiring. Your bravery and will to adventure is unmatched, far as I could tell. Your videos always leave me with a sense that I haven't truly lived. You are living. And it's not all about exotic locations and novel experiences - but rather about reinventing the mundane and extracting such beauty and deep insight out of suffering. Love your work, Beau. May the Lord continue to bless you and your family with good health and you with an abundantly rich life full of meaningful adventures.
Hey Beau, wanted to thank you for inspiring me to find adventure where I am. Spent yesterday paddling across the lake we stay at, exploring around, throwing up hammock tents and camping out. Now, the night was absolute hell with mosquitoes, but it was worth it for the cracking 4am sun rise and paddling back on the mirror calm lake before the world woke up.
I moved to AU a number of years ago and it really surprised me just how much drier it was and how much smaller 'rivers' were. Aside from the big estuarine areas within a few km of the coast (all the major cities are situated along the largest rivers by the coast), there's not really much of the continent that is navigable by water. Even a tiny kayak has to be portaged much of the way until you get near the ocean. Makes you appreciate just how important water conservation is down under
What an exceptional film Beau, seriously, you re-invigorate the backyard adventurer in me. Makes me grateful that I won't be living and studying in the city forever.
Legend! I once paddled 6hrs to work, and camped out in the bush for the week then paddled back home at the end of it. Your videos were some of the best motivation for me in the times that I doubted myself before the adventure!
Perfect timing for this film - just read this section in your book (signed copy - brilliant!). How to make the best of a bad situation ‘the best thing about only one mosquito in your bivi - he can only take so much!’ Great outlook on life.
I love the world you create for yourself. And your attitude created from testing yourself, connecting back into your environment and see life as black and white, but always aim for the white. Seeing the world for its hidden and ignored beauty but highlighting more importantly that Water is Life. But we are shittin in our own bath. Thank you for taking us on your journey, and being an inspiration to our journey.
Beau, I am hooked, I have to say your content is amazing. It is inspiring, and sobering all in the same segment. I am one of the lucky ones who still has many videos to watch, as I am only 5-6 videos in. Have to say thankyou, this video and another one of paddling a different river, actually was the reason today while walking across a parking lot, I picked up a small bit of trash sitting on the ground and deposited it into the bin. Thankyou for what you are doing, don't stop. Cheers from Canada.
Overused phrase; "inspirational". Definitely applies to you, Beau. Not the whole motivation, but certainly an influence; I quit where I lived and moved to a Scottish island. 5 walk (towing a kayak) to the lochside. Even a one hour paddle takes me to new interesting vistas, every time. Walk from my door over ancient hummocky landscapes, spot signs of otters, and just breath.
I'm struck by a quiet revolution happening focussing on how we micro-explore the world right at hand... I'm reminded of Geowizard's straight line missions; purposeful travel making the world seem new!
@@XxDaMettxX Maybe not adventure with a narration or goal like those channels (this one and GeoWizard), but I used to watch Joe Robinet although it's more about camping it's still really nice content. Now that I think about it, there's a guy called "Brave Dave" (search "brave dave big fat freight hop") and he train hopped across Canada, it's actually a really good series of videos. Another one is Shiey who also travels by train (although not in the most legal sense, he's still a good guy) and explores countries. Although Beau makes some of the best content I've seen, don't think there's someone quite like him on the site.

I often think about the relative speed of travel and how it informs you to a place. Flying gets you large distances with only a 30K foot view of the topography, driving means hundreds of miles in a day but largely insulated by a steel and glass bubble separating you from people and the environment, cycling drops the scale to that of feeling the weather, knowing the topography by sore muscles and then walking, boating or swimming moves you at this fundamentally human pace known so well by our ancestors. I can relate to so much of your content, slowing down, taking a view as the industrialized, mechanized world whizzes by... so worth it.
I think we forget about those childhood imaginations when we get older. When we become adults we forget what we wanted from our life when we were a child. All the things we wanted to do. I have turned 50 recently and I am so glad that I have done the things I have. I have always said I want to do that, and then I do it. A lot of people will never leave their home shire let alone their state or country. I am so pleased I have found your channel to remind me of those childhood ideals. The ones that say I want to do that one day. I'm going to apply for a job as a train driver now. It's the only thing I have never achieved from my childhood dream. I keep creating new dreams though and I achieve them. I am so pleased I found your channel (by accident mind you) Thank you. Paul

@@constancemiller3753 in the last few weeks before i left my old city i found countless spots i've never been in before. most of the time on my bicycle because i was moving slower and looking around.
I take my yak on the creek at least 2-3 times a week(weather permitting) and can honestly say that's when I feel the most free and alive. It's typically just myself and my dog but he is getting up in age so he can't make it every trip. Thanks for all the great videos Beau!!
“I’m earning my opinions” I love that phrase
"Don't complain dude or dudette, get on with it and milk it for all the good stuff" - That quote should be in every self improvement book ever written
He'll yeah. I needed this right now.
Agreed. He will, indeed, yeah.
Makes you appreciate just how important water conservation is down under
Yeah, i live in tassie and it is much the same
There's nothing that makes me love life more than watching this good fella do exactly what we loves doing.
I get excited like a little schoolgirl when I see Beau posting a new video!
What an exceptional film Beau, seriously, you re-invigorate the backyard adventurer in me. Makes me grateful that I won't be living and studying in the city forever.
Why not have a backyard adventure in your city?
When I see you posted a video, it's like a re-set to remind me just what it is like to be inspired creatively and in lifestyle.
“I can get to work via the very water that falls on my roof” I love that!
Thank you for this amazing story.
Really really love your work and the way you show us how to adventure.
Love from France 🇫🇷
I like messages from France. Makes me feel like I'm in your country drinking wine, and that's a good thing.
@@BeauMiles its better than junk wine perhaps ?! ;)
I'm struck by a quiet revolution happening focussing on how we micro-explore the world right at hand... I'm reminded of Geowizard's straight line missions; purposeful travel making the world seem new!
Coincidentally, Geowizard has also commented on this video! Great adventure-minds think alike!
Does anyone know any other channels that make stuff like these two?
David M Hmm, kinda the same thing but Mediocre Amateurs is a good channel. It’s a group of guys who meet up and climb mountains and run through forests n stuff.
@@s4n714g000 Thanks for the recommendation of Joe Robinet. About 40 minutes into the first episode of "10 Days, 10 Items ; Alone on an Island in the Canadian Wilderness." and really like it.
Paul
That drone shot with the stingrays was beautiful
Good do see adventure can be found so close to home. Thanks for showing us Beau!
These videos make me rethink my surroundings. A simple commute turns into so much more when you look closely. Thanks, Beau for this powerful video.
I worked for Melbourne water and always drained * dreamed *of doing some like this. RUclips gold!
Beau, thank you for sharing your beautiful, creative and absolutely innovative storytelling. Watching your channel has been absolute pleasure. I’m looking forward to seeing your channel grow. Your camera crew is killer.
The past few weeks I have gone in a 45 minute radius of where I live. I found out that I am so close to so many wonderful
Hiking trails and views! You really don’t need to travel hundreds of miles for adventure.
"I'm a bit late. Four days...well no.. three..its...Yeah I left home four days ago or four mornings ago......I don't know what you'd say..yeah." Got a good chuckle out of me, based on a previous real convo :P ? Haha seriously enjoyed this one.
Would of been a very good chat, Steve
Beau is the absolute zen master of silver linings, always so positive, very inspiring
My Brother From another mother, The way you express yourself with wisdom and honesty honesty sounds like I’m just listening to myself, Keep up the great work on doing what you want to do or what’s best for you keep your head up and wish you the best
Gorgeous and thought provoking as usual Beau. Love your work soooooo much. Thank you for continuing to bring your moments of joy and love for life to us.
Wow, that was so much more than I expected. I will never complain about a bad day on one of my trips. EVER again.
Beau does all the things I fantasize about doing. I'm continually inspired to do stuff instead of just thinking about it when I watch a Beau movie.
The relaxation ,education , entertainment and happiness this man’s content and perspective gives me is something I have never experienced before , god he’s bloody brilliant isn’t he
This man gives me hope to truly find the deep satisfaction and fulfillment of being at peace with yourself. I want to go on my journey of finding myself and become the purest version of myself I ever could
I'm hiking 3 mountains in 24 hours next weekend so this was just the right amount of inspiration I needed to make sure I view the experience as just that, I'm sure I'm gonna suffer but with a perspective shift I know it's gonna be amazing!
Good to watch another video Beau! You always know just what to say!
You are the spirit animal of the concept of adventure mate! I love this and every piece you make. Cheers!
Everything about this is amazing...
I listened to a few of your videos that I had downloaded for my first ever backpacking trip. 8-days in the wilderness, with some Beau Miles to watch when feeling down…. It was truly one of the most magical experiences I have had yet. Thank you for your amazing content 🙏🏻
I hear you loud and clear I too am realizing the same thing you don't have to go far away to enjoy what's right all around us👍👍
Just stole the milk and had himself a treat at the end. No one there to stop him.
Good job
