The slowest lap of my block, ever

  • May and I head off on a slow, tooled-up, distracted lap of the block- which happens to be a perfect mile. Seated within the wide, book and plum filled bucket of a wheelbarrow, May and I check on the trees from A Mile an Hour, do a few nice things for the neighbours (it’s Christmas!), whack weeds, pick up rubbish, pick up sticks, eat plums and generally have a good time. What you might think to be an episode of Beau teaching May is in fact very much a process of May teaching Beau- looking at the world closely, distracted, with immediacy- which is fast becoming my key ingredients of Backyard adventuring.

My dismay at BLACKBERRIES and WILLOW: lovely fruit, good to look at , but super invasive in Australia and hugely detrimental to our bush, waterways, and general environmental cosmos. Lots and lots and lots of reasons why they're bad for Aus. Oh, and the next couple of films will show you why I particularly dislike invasive species (The commute...). Goodonyas!

I love it. Having a daughter of my own that’s now 6, I remember all of the rock collecting, hours of staring at chickens, just anything and everything is a special find to them. The hard part has always been letting them explore. I feel the parent inside is split, with wanting to protect and engaging with our child. We often need to remember they will grow up soon enough, so fast, that we don’t need to tell them to stay away from certain things because we might think they are dirty or have no importance. Eventually one day they will think that themselves. But instead we need to encourage adventure whenever we see it, and whenever they see it. And sometimes just go for one, when it’s been a while since we have had one. After my next work trip, it’s just time to go rent an RV, being winter and snow and all, too cold to tent to camp, and just go. No destination in mind, just pick a direction and go. Adventures are what keep us whole, and engaged, too much monotony and it’s like our routines become us.
To this day my daughter still loves collecting rocks. I’m glad I kept my mouth shut, and explored with her. It’s encouraging to see another parent do that as well.

I started with the 26miles in a day and binge watched all the others. It's the highlight of the month when one of your videos drop.
    Keep them coming Beau.

I love this doc. I used to explore my backyard and front yard and swingset and woods like they were a whole universe. It was really only an acre and a half. Now I'm still into nature, but it's all big hiking trips. This documentary reminds me of all those small kid things that are so exciting, like finding a pinecone or turning over rocks.

"Your pocket money in the future might well be determined on your ability to remember numbers on the proviso that your brain's getting sharper as mine is getting slower." 7:18. Lot of good quotes in this video, but this one really speaks to me, especially as an 18 year old with older parents. Seeing a parent notice their own mortality, acknowledge it, and plan for it is both terrifying and extremely comforting, especially with a child so young. That kind of mentality will hopefully influence May her whole life, teaching her to not only enjoy the time she has, but to make plans for the time when time runs out: to find someone to remember her pocket money for her. Beau's a force of positivity, but it's these nuggets of life-encompassing clarity that give his videos an ethereal ring of Truth.
