Finding money on roundabouts to pay for a date - The 12 Days of Newness | Ep 4

  • ROUNDABOUT THEORY: I have a theory. Roundabouts, sometimes called rotaries, are much like riverbends of gold, collecting up all the worthwhile loot that flows out of people's cars. It’s simple physics really, where badly tied loads from utes and trucks going around never ending corners spill their stuff. I've found plenty of stuff before on roundabouts, but never thrown myself at the idea. So, I head to Canberra, Australia's capital with one of the highest concentrations of roundabouts in the world, to test out my long held belief that forensically searching the fringes of a large set of roundabouts, I’ll get rich.

Theory - you need small roundabouts. Small roundabouts = sharp turns = lots of centrifugal force. Large roundabouts may look impressive, but they actually generate less of the needed forces.

as the formula for centripetal acceleration is v^2/r, a large roundabout at higher speeds is not that useful compared to a tiny one at low speeds
so yes, smaller roundabouts should net greater results, as vehicles are put to their test.

As a treasure hunter there's not much more exciting than spending your whole day in the slight chance of finding gold or an old coin! 🙂 Yes you're spot on that a more populated area is the key. Should've spent time on the beaches after this year's floods! Found about $40 in coins without a metal detector washed up

Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven, you must become a new creation and be born again by responding to the Holy Spirit. - Matthew 7:21-23, Revelation 3:15-16 cf. Hebrews 10:26-29. Pay close attention to your thoughts and how you respond to your inner monologue because it has a greater impact than you think. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life, and do all that you can to follow His ways.

I remember finding lots of money in parks when I was a kid, especially around the benches and swings. Parents and other kids sitting there probably dropped them.
I dunno it it was because I was growing up and not really looking for coins on the floor or people were getting a bit stingier with their money, but I can tell you that around 2007 I started finding significantly less coins in the same places that used to be full of them.
Nowadays, between credit cards and the third in a row once in a lifetime economic crisis, you just don't find money in the wild anymore; besides a rare 5 cent that is.

Dear Beau, as a Canberran I have found this video thoroughly entertaining and amusing. I love the things you do and the attitude you have doing them, when people tell me to stop being dorky, gross and quirky (as someone who wears sunsmart shirts and hats and loves picking up random things I find) I think about you, a genuinly fair dinkum bloke who refuses the status quo in place of practicality, honesty and just being all round grouse human being.

I have also noticed that road money has reduced lately, especially since covid hit. Maybe the twitch to card purchases?
My lifetime results are definitely biased by finding a $50 note in a carpark once, but I used to make a dollar a month or so just from picking up coins while riding to and from work. Now I make far more from the container deposit system (NSW finally got it!). But even when I was finding money more often, it was very peaky - a smattering of battered 5c/10c/20c pieces then every now and then a few dollars usually in close prximity. I assume that was one person losing/dumping a handful of coins. Most obviously the time I got ~$5 in 5c and 10c pieces over about 2m of gutter.

That brings back memories... I once broke down with my old Heinkel Tourist 103A2 (built in 1963) once when the throttle wire ripped. I spent about an hour walking up and down the street and found screws, hooks, washers, a key, a pipe and even some money in the hope to find something to fix my scooter. In the end I popped into a gas station and asked if I could use a saw to saw open that pipe I've found. Used it to fix the throttle and home I drove!

I too ride my bicycle around town looking for interesting loot. The trick is to go to areas and intersections that are used frequently enough for people to lose things, but not so frequently used that other people find the good stuff, before you get there. So any place that has a sidewalk, or a bus bench, or anywhere where there's foot traffic, you statistically won't be the first person to spot a good item. I'd recommend taking the 2nd or 3rd most popular backroads, in your area, and look for the intersections of other semi-popular roads. These are usually about 5 miles outside of the city. Springtime seems to be the best time to look for tools that fall off of trucks and tractors. But again, you have to start riding about a week before everyone else, when it's still too cold for most people to be riding bicycles. Goodonya for the video and keep up the good works.

I spent 20 years in Canberra. Once found a stash of coins strewn along a median strip between Chifley & Lyons.
Best places for money finds are car parks, malls where people sit, car wash drains, servos & basically anywhere people frequent on mass & spend money.
The key to good finds is, walk..... a lot !!
I've also noted a car par trend where people put their wallet or purse on the roof, bonnet or bumper bar of their car whilst loading groceries or chatting. They forget about it & drive off !!
