40 days eating only canned beans (191 tins)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 май 2020
- Inspired by a half-page scene in John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flat, where a family of poor, super healthy kids eat an almost exclusive bean diet, Beau decides to do much the same thing.
Eating only the contents of 191 tins of beans over 40 days transforms Beau into The Human Bean, and in doing so gives him a front row seat into how one food, totally and utterly, dictates how he feels. Beau uses his intimate knowledge of running to compare his former self to his bean-self, logging lacklustre training for an ultramarathon that he plans on running during the final day of the experiment. Epiphanies are had, saddles are blazed, and genuine insight emerges from what is strangely appealing day-to-day of mediocrity.

I am autistic and I seriously, really, intensely love beans. They are the cornerstone of my diet in every form, but my favorite is ham and beans. I use smoked ham hocks and cubed pork tenderloin along with the usual fixings and spices, and cornbread. I fill a 5 gallon Dutch oven with ham and beans(1lb Lima beans, 1lb great northern, 1lb split peas) weekly and 2lb ham+bones to eat for the week. It’s incredible. So cheap, very filling and comforting, easy to slow cook, and great drunk food.

You discovering how the absence of other foods shortened your emotional experience was really interesting and unexpected. Eating only beans is pretty dark, maybe even akin to a prison diet. You alluded to a darker side of this experiment, and you can tell this must have been quite the thing to stick through.
Eating one or couple different foods is what humans have been doing for hundreds of millions of years. Mainly starchy vegetables and some meat when there was no plants available.

I once did the potato diet for 30 days, nothing but potatoes which I boiled and then diced and fried them and put just a little bit of low sugar ketchup on them. I lost 25 pounds, had a clear head, and lots of energy! Everyone thought I was nuts but I had read about a man from Australia who had been living on nothing but potatoes for over a year and had lost 100 pounds. Only problem was, by the end of that 30 days I was so totally sick of potatoes that I couldn't eat even one over the next year LOL
Did the 25 lb stay off?
@@kateb6893 i highly doubt it did. It’s like keto or that other no sugar diet from ten years ago (can’t remember the name, some doctors last name I think) they don’t work unless you stick to it forever. The people I knew that have done these diets put the weight on right after they stopped following the program.
It's your typical vegan effect. Could've replaced the potatoes with any other veggie with the same outcome. During the honeymoon phase you always feel great. Until your body's stores are depleted and the starvation related autophagy begins. Then all kinds of health issues set in and you feel like crap 24/7. Basically that's the end result of any kind of restricted diet. We're omnivores after all. We get our nutrients from all kinds of different food sources. Greens, fruits, grains, fish, dairy, meats, eggs... We can't stick to only one type of food for good, because then we get into a deficit of certain vitamins, aminoacids or minerals that only the other foods contain. We need the variety and we also need the right balance of it all. It's so simple but it's also not. Depends on your own approach to the matter.
@Mr know it all
How can you compare a vegan diet to a diet of only beans or potatos? A vegan diet just means it excludes all animal products and it can be as simple, varied, healthy or unhealthy as you see fit. Any nutritionist will tell you that a diet (vegan or otherwise) that is varied and includes a wide range of different foods is more likely to be optimal than a diet that is restrictive, because your obviously going to get a wide range of nutrients and various other things compared to a restricted diet.
All of the largest nutrition organisations on the planet agree that an appropriately planned vegan diet (a wide variety of foods, mostly whole foods, limited processed foods etc) is perfectly healthy for all stages of the human life cycle. There is so much misinformation around, and people claiming that your going to be nutrient deficient if you don't consume any animal products, but the scientific literature does not support this. Even using basic logic and facts can tell you this is nonsense. For example, most vitamins and minerals need to be replenished on a daily basis. Only a few vitamins such as b12 and vitamin A can be stored for any significant amount of time (4 yrs for b12 and 4 months for Vit A). Many millions of people have been eating diets void of animal products for many years and decades. I've been Vegan 6 years myself and I am still waiting for the magic nutrient deficiencies and brain fog or whatever the hell some people talk about. A lot of the time diet isn't even what is causing these people problems, there are many factors that go into good health not just diet.

You are unusual, creative (the human form of bean cans). When you mentioned losing energy and mood as a possible side effect of OTHER things you were now no longer eating, I was reminded of an English experiment. Kids were brought to a "summer program" at a school. The curriculum would be (1965) materials and other things as taking care of your room, no sugar, no phones, no sex... These mostly were kids who were told they were "A" students. They often had a terrible time. They didn't know how to study, how to invent, etc. but the thing that affected them the most was the crash from no sugar, no phones, etc. After a couple weeks, they began to adapt to exercise, getting up, learning to study, etc. Sadly, had they more time, they would overall have done o.k. As it was, they went back home, to being told they were "A" students and resuming their addictions.

I don't regret those days at all. I was never starving, never worried for my life. I was just hungry for something MORE than chips, gravy and the cheapest tomato sauce available. Its made me fall in love with food and I am willing to try absolutely everything just to taste the unique flavours available.
Mate I'd love to see a video of what you do eat, and how much you actually do from day to day. You're an inspiration to us all!
This story made me consider how poverty or living in a food desert can affect someone’s chance for success. A well-rounded diet’s affect on motivation, creativity, and focus should not be underestimated.
Living on white rice an ranch or hotdog buns an bbq sauce when those fs ran out every month succked big time
The problem is our modern diet doesn’t accomplish this either. The food pyramid was motivated by lowering costs, with no concrete evidence supporting it.
A shame to society. (Research US obesity rates vs the release date of the food pyramid consisting of mainly cheap carbohydrates)
@Spike Elwood That's their own fault though haha. Most those guys have a hard time taking care of themselves from what I have seen though.
Nutty.
What an excellent observation. Go to Washington DC and help us out! They don’t seem to understand the effects of poverty.
I like how he throws himself headlong into batshit ideas with the assumption that he won't actually die from it
Blackobluna You can survive 20+ days with no food. I wouldn’t think 40 days with just beans would kill you 😂 maybe 6 months
@@gavinhanson9213 Malnutrition is a thing, so while he might not die, he could've gotten some serious organ damage.
@@Jacob-yg7lz yeah the nosebleed while running was not a good sign
Beans are one of the healthiest things to eat on the planet...SMH
@@kerry_runs Just because they're healthy doesn't mean they can't kill you if they're all you eat for a long period of time. Beans aren't a complete protein. If he kept this up for a year he'd almost certainly have anemia and significant loss of muscle mass.
mate, its awesome to see you do this sort of stuff. as a bushman myself, you have sated my curiosity sir. look forward to more of your awesome content.
The best RUclips video I’ve seen in a long time. Likeable guy, great sense of humour, humour and interesting experiment
The music and the shots made this look like a Netflix original
Na this is better
that’s true… Was very well done. Entertaining bloke. it’s strange that I was looking for some sort of a been induced epiphany… But none came. And he just ate a bunch of beans and felt fairly average about it.

Mr. Miles throughout the video “bean(s)” is said 82 times. An additional 23 are added from text that said “bean(s)”. Giving the total to 105. It’s 2:44 in the morning, I watched the video twice, once for my enjoyment, and another for the bean
Been head.
thanks for your service

You've bean busy 😏
Love the story telling and editing keep these videos coming please
This video encouraged me to reconsider beans, and now they are a staple in my diet. Cheap, healthy, and packed with nutrition!
Booooomnmm
@@BeauMiles Beau what was in that last sandwich ??
Best way is to get a ninja foodi pressure cooker or an instapot pressure cooker. Just rinse your dried beans, pick out any stones or other detritus that might be in there. Dump in the pot and add seasonings, onions, garlic, plus water and pressure cook on high for 25 minutes give or take, then natural pressure release for 10. You can mix in some hot precooked meats after if you like.
@@thedoctor7158I would think soaking dried beans for 24 hours would make them more nutritious. I can tell the difference when I went to cooking beans without soaking them 12-24 hours open air or w a cotton cloth covering loosely). Massive difference in how I felt and my gut.
@@WeatherMoon The nutritional difference between soaking and not soaking is negligible. The only difference would be for those who have trouble digesting the types of complex sugars in beans for that you want to soak.
There are a lot of youtubers doing all these "far out" experiments and challenges, but very, very few manage to make something like eating 80kg of beans into a captivating story like Beau. I particularly enjoyed the reflections on eating culture, and beginner runners. Oh, and the security checkpoint was so Aussie :D
I would caution people that beans do not have a complete complement of essential amino acids and this is not sustainable over long period of time unless you vary the type of beans like he did.
As an American no airport in this country would allow that. The paranoia at our airports are absolutely insane but unfortunately it’s necessary.
Must be something better to do with your life

This video turned out to be way better than I had expected it would be when I clicked on it. I was just expecting someone eating beans in their house everyday. Unexpectedly I start to fully love all the content. You are a great story teller, and likeable from my own interests. Thank you so much for all the details.

This guy: I want to eat beans off the rotting floor of a ruin like someone in the Great Depression
Imagine you’re a regular on that train and everyday you just see this dude posted up going in on a can of beans
Thank you for conducting this experiment, I was going to do the same during covid for many reason's. Instead i went with only eggs, butter, milk and cheese. I have regained my best health at the age of 41. Im still on the diet but have incorporated more greens and starches. The collective conscious thanks you again and looking forward to your next endeavors. 😊
This is the exact video I was looking for. Thank you.
This literally felt like a documentary, I could put this on the TV and nobody would know it’s a RUclips video, fantastic editing. If this was a one hour video I would binge to this
I agree. Wonderfully done. Very watchable.

Your body will get used to beans after a good month of farting.
Or maybe more, depends on your body.
The interaction between Beau and his grandma really got me: 7:40. "Do you eat many beans" "Not really" Loved this video.
very down to earth, comedic, fun and educational video my friend. cheers from canada
Unbelievable, well done. Really cool experiment. Must've been super super hard.
I had no idea I was going to enjoy this as thoroughly as I did. Came here out of curiosity, stayed because I wanted to see how his life turned out. Such great storytelling. Very random, and probably unrelatable, but definitely memorable.
I can actually relate. I had to do an elimination diet. Meat only, though, not beans.
@@annabell3385 I have a very limited diet because of allergies, when by body decides it doesn’t want to play fair it’s carrots, green beans, peas & rice. I’m not fond of the texture of beans, I like the taste though.
