Kayaking 2000km around the southern tip of Africa

- Africa by Kayak: In 2007, Beau Miles attempted to paddle the 4000kms from one side of Africa to the other. Starting in Mozambique and continuing along the South African coast Beau allowed 5 months to complete the voyage. With him for over half the journey was Jared Sharples of New Zealand. Together the pair experienced the magnificent coast until Jared, crippled with sickness, left the expedition. Beau paddled alone for 6 weeks, experiencing for the first time in his life, a truly nomadic, solo existence. Battling huge surf, Beau only completed 2000kms of the original plan after realising that his trip wasn't about kilometres gained but rather the quality of the experience.

I know you will likely never see this comment Beau, but I just wanted to say that this film made me become interested in kayaking years ago. Since the release of this film, I have watched every one of your videos and they inspired me to get out and explore the world around me. It's because of this inspiration that I began kayaking a few months ago. Thank you for creating such incredible content and helping me ignite a brand new hobby that I am so passionate about!!!

Couldn't agree more

How Beau doesn't already have millions and millions of subscribers I will never know. Honestly some of the best and most interesting videos on youtube
Beau! We met in Richards Bay South Africa. I was amazed to see you paddle up to the international morring (27:43). I'm not sure if you remember having dinner on my captain's boat with us. I was helping Ginni (an Australian) sail around the world, my name is Dave (from California). Congrats on finishing your journey and making a great documentary about it! I'm amazed that youtube just recommended this when you did this back in 2007! That bit with the official wearing your life jacket backwards is priceless and somewhat symbolic :) If you ever want to dip a paddle in the pacific, I've got an extra kayak with your name on it in California.
everyone like this comment so he sees it!
Lazy Farmer he probs didn’t reply because the guy is talking shite
G'day, Lazy. Could of sworn I responded to you, but it seems I did not! Terrific bolt from the blue. I sure do remember the encounter. Vividly. Cali is on the cards when this covid bonanza wears thin...Ta for the line, mate. Best

Of course Beau would pick the ONE TIME when the swells of the Ocean are as big as they haven't been for over 20 years....that timing! Good job on surviving this journey. You are a mad man and an inspiration!
"i dont wan to do something to say ive done it, i want to do it because i love it" words of a true adventurer.
Dylan Free Those words stuck out in my mind too. Great way of seeing things isn’t it. Live for the moment
WHOA!!
i'd once asked a friend of mine with 10k subs on insta - if she's still travel if not for posting on fb/insta and she was like - "meh... nah!!".
yeh, i don't want to do something bcz i can get a thousand likes while the process means nothing to me.
Lol and makes a movie...rofl
So cool to see the kindness of the local people to help on your journey, not many places like this! Bravo Beau
I know. Mozambicans and South Africans were incredible- only a few dodgy officials here and there, but an absolute minority. Wonderful people experiences.
I don't think people realize what a toll this takes on the body. Well done mate, what a champion.
the man that ran off to get you drinks wow thats hospitality and how his son came to help as well
It was quite sad re Andrew McCauley. I hope his wife and son are doing well. I was following his adventure, and was moved to donate to his wife and son after he didn't make it. The video of him leaving the beach at the start, paddling away in tears, and the call "Kayak One, Kayak One" are indelible in my memory. Paddling has brought many happy times, but that was by far the saddest.
Indeed, Qaannat. Deeply sad. It's a topic that I talk about in classrooms with undergraduates, and fascinating to hear the range of insight that people have about the tragedy. Quite a nice thought actually, that Andrew is still a big part of the learning process. Go well, Q.

How dangerous it is to use a kayak in the sea?
@@letsrelaxwithtexts2114 Well, choppy seas have been troublesome to even boats. Now, imagine being there on a kayak in this shark infested waters. Sketchy business.
This video was like reading a manga watching a character on a journey through life, having ups and downs very good
Beau, we met you on the beach in KwaZulu Natal, Calum and Helen. This is the first time I've seen this film, great movie and fascinating to see the rest of your trip!
Cal Mac hoping to see Beau's reply here

@Dr Boom What? I was referring to the fact that it took Beau six months to reply to Cal Mac.
The lengths of what this man does is incredible and this channel is so underrated we need to get him to 500k by the end of 2020 and 1 mil and the end of 2021 this comment was on 28 February this is my experiment
"I don't want to have to do anything to say "I've done it", I want to do it because I love it."
many folks need to hear him say this and watch his journey
Beau, your film’s stand the test of time.
I’m watching this in 2021, and the archival feel to your journey, has already oxidized itself through your blood, sweat, and tears.
I’ve never had the opportunity to make such a journey myself, but I’m living vicariously through the riptides of your life.
It feels a little bit like a microcosm to your adulthood. I hope you go back one day, and rewatch these films, seeing yourself time traveling through the decades, and inevitably finding yourself back in those moments. Relive them if you can.
Many people will likely never attempt even one of the adventure you’ve embarked on. You’ve amounted to more than I can count on both hands and feet. Man, you’re a hero.
I hope we cross paths in the future.
Mac
You write beautifully. I enjoyed reading this even if it wasn’t for me
This is brilliant. I spent 6 months walking across Africa a few years ago and god, this takes me back.
The scenery, the overwhelming warmth and kindness of the people, the hundreds moments where you think ‘only in Africa’.
Amazing work. Well done boys.
Wow that is awesome !!! Where did you start your trip and where did you end it??
did you basically only walk? what route did you take? this sounds really interesting
@wantafanta01 the areas he went through were kind and friendly places in africa? You dont beleive that? Do you really beleive the whole continent of africa is evil and dangerous? You must live under a rock.
africa or not very good people regardless
“I started to think about the varying degrees of success, what does it all mean?” You sir are a one of a kind legend and inspiration to me !
Thought it was “just” a kayaking video, it was so much more. Thank you beau for this beautiful adventure such an inspiration
Never again will I ignore something that repeatedly pops up in my recommended. What an amazing film. Thank you.
Africa by Kayak, oh this isn't a cover.
Bless the fair seas in Africaaaaa
literally came here to make this same comment. Not surprised someone beat me to it :D
Genius 😂🤣
I remember watching this when you first released it and I'm watching it again because you are an inspiration. I'm looking to do an, one day, 80k solo paddle in early Oct. The way you look at life causes me to slow down and question what is truly driving me. I think that leads to safer decision making when I finally shove off.
I subscribed as soon as he started consulting the Risk board for scale
That part was gold
Every time I watch one of Beau's films not only does it make me think pretty hard about my own life but gives me that exact same feeling that happens when you start on an adventure. Excitement mixed with oh f*@k what have I gone and done now. Fair play Beau, what a film.
Watched every video of yours after finding your channel yesterday, had a stress fracture in my foot from a week , can't think of anything else but running,
But your films made me realise the importance of every aspect of an adventure wheather it be taking a break or listening to my heartbeat spending time with ourselves imploring while exploring. Have a good day mate
idk why I've did what i did in my past 20 years of life but
I'm making every year of my life count from now on
pushing towards my ultimate goal of having a balanced life with the forces of expansion and survival equating eachother.
I love the conciecoucness of this person. We are nothing but a blip in time. We keep going. No matter what. Just keep going. Don't give up. Each generation progresses. Keep going...... keep going...... keep going.
I have been binging you for days! This voyage, the bravery, the loneliness, I felt it in my heart. While I don't paddle, I can try to imagine, but cannot. I hope you're well, and thank you for this beautiful documentary of the travel
Absolutely beautiful, to see the kindness of humans across the world. It’s amazing to see how they just took you in as a friend.
Kevin Ma and the well known south african corruption
Hi Beau, I absolutely love how honest you are on this film. We see how your expression changes from pleasure and confidence to grief, as you heard about Andrew's accident over the phone. Very human!!!
Crocodile Dundee lol I think your amazing and you have taught me that without risk and just playing safe, life can be boring and we learn absolutely nothing about ourselves, what we can endure. Thank you
I really appreciate your ability to meet with the locals and take every bit of help you can. So inspiring!
Beau tiful! Watching this looked like my idea of torcher, everyone gets a buzz off different things. Good on him
Why doesnt this video have a billion views and this channel 10 millions subs ????
It has just started to appear in people’s recommended so will probably pick up on subs and views shortly.
Also, shows that you can have great content but not making millions like that Pewdie guy or smth.
This channel is the shit. Shows life, real life, real effort and dedication.

We traveled extensively in Mozambique, including getting married in SA and touring Swaziland over a decade ago. Africans are colorful and curious but they often get pretty excited especially about weddings. I toured with similar hat and veil! Watching you go past Ibo island. We stayed at a back packers inn there. It was epic.
To think that all those kids in the orphanage have grown up and are in their early 20s and early 30s. Hope the orphanage owners and kids are doing well. Take care everyone. And remember to take care of one another.
Love the vibes of the old lady! She talked about how bad her situation was but still offered you tea!
"I don't want to have to do anything, to say that I've done it. I wanna do it, because I love it." (8:15). That is probably the best, purest adventure mantra that I've ever heard. You, Sir are one of the finest examples of human spirit that I've ever seen! If I wasn't already a kayaker (30 + years), you'd inspire me to become one. BRAVO!
Beau. I need more of your films, they’re bloody ace. After thinking I’d watched all your videos and scanning through the list, I quickly realised that I never actually finished this one so set about doing exactly that. NOW I’ve watched them all. I do hope you’re making more mate as you’re a hoot to watch and to be honest, a massive legend in my eyes. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching the next one.
OMG.. this awesome documentary has been sleeping for the last 3 years.. it definitely deserves more!
Ive had a big day today. And had a little bit of reflection. Your message at the end about how we are insignificant in the ocean. Man . Thats how Ill end my day today. Relevant to my day today. Cheers for the video
That map from Risk is perfect for this.
You guys are actually the real heroes of life. People look to celebrities for heroism where there is none. Crazy you are actually like the adventurers of old, brilliant.
Wow, this is beyond special. I wish I’d come across this years ago, the message, the trip, and the scenery. Thanks for posting it
"This bloody paddling business, it is just hard work" Hahaha! I also make large trips by sea kayak, sometimes I feel just the same haha. Africa, very cool and well shot and edited film!
Thanks, Kayasper. Might head back one day and finish what I started. I warming back up to the idea.
Thanks for your reply, Beau! Yeah, you should do that, I think! Currently I am considering a sea kayak trip of 5000 km, so love to see your videos.
Beau Miles you two could paddle together
Ocean scares the hell out of me. Brave guy. Amazing trip, well done. Next time I'm down under, I'll look you up. Love Australia.
I went on kayak trip 7 days on the Thames from Abingdon to London, recent. I slept in bushes and Islands.
I was alone and so glad to have nothing, just bush to talk to , good sleeping arrangements , food drink supply.

OMG 6 years have passed and I’m finding this now. My son is now in South Africa about to hand out bikes he’s assembled to kids in SA. Your blogging is incredible, for a mum back at home I love that the ocean looks just like Australia. My son and his partner are keen surfers, so it’s good for us to see what it might be like for him. I hope my son & his beautiful partner stay safe.

I've watched this 3 times now. Beau, your storytelling is so captivating. You're a bloody treasure mate, hope you're doing alright through this bloody pandemic.
I've been on vacation for a small week to sweden and took on a canoe a trip through lakes and rivers. I enjoyed every second of it and still think back to those days. Thinking about getting my own canoe right now and just go out there.
great job on the reporting Beau, so insightful and informative. A hard journey and a story well told. You are an all round champ!

A tad late but here I am anyway. What a brilliant movie! Congratulations on your outstanding feat and thank for sharing.
I'm Zimbabwean born, lived in South Africa in Durban and Cape Town and everywhere inbetween and now reside in Tasmania. It was great seeing the old country 🙏
Great film Beau Miles, great approach to paddling, its all about the journey, not about the destination.
Cheers
Brock Newbery
Thanks Brock, much obliged.
Good job.......
I feel like I come back to this video every few months, truly inspiring adventure. No punches pulled on the highs and lows, gotta love it
I love this. We still have two sons, luckily. No 1 son fractured skull, top & bottom palate after kayaking down Ardeche gorge and slipping down a crevasse when jumping off the Pont d'Arc. He recovered and trekked round South America to meet: No.2 son, who was trapped under a stop rock on same river, but rescued by someone reaching down and finding his BA. No. 2 son spent a year in the Guyanese rain forest with an indigenous tribe and nearly lost it canoeing down to the Kaiteur Falls, and working in a gold mine. Both now in their late 20s, and still taking risks. I won't explain what example their 2 parents set, but ice climbing, paragliding, motorcycling are involved!
Beau u give my spirit a lift. Coming from the states I live your work, thanks for your heart you give to the world!
Congratulations and thanks for this. It was truly great to see an individual with a pure sense of adventure in action. Inspiring !!!
What an adventure, very inspirational. Its not the destination its the journey. Fantastic.
This was a great watch. The thing that'll stick with me for far longer than I know is the human elements, the harmony and the complete lack of modern needs and wants.
This channel is the best thing that has happened this lockdown
First vid I’ve watched of you and I honestly was hooked start to finish! I loved it! Great vid, made me homesick as well being South African. Sometimes I forget how great Africa is! People are always willing to help you there when you least expect it!!
Absolutely loved watching this Beau, you ROCK!
I think this guy is incredible.
I went travelling in 1989, before it was so popular to take a gap year and travel to far out of the way places. It didn't matter how far from civilisation you got, in a high mountain pass in Tibet or the jungles of Madagascar there would always be an Aussie with this sort of enthusiasm pop up. Places where I'd not see another Westerner for days.
It's long been an important cultural thing for Australians to go on adventures but this guy is something beyond most other humans.
He makes me want to go on more adventures
When you are young you have to seize those opportunities and not just dream about it. I remember thinking if I work a normal job and take two weeks vacation somewhere I want to see a year it will be 26 years to spend one year of abroad seeing the world.
This guy knows how to live and seize the day.
I have so many dreamt ideas, but I can honestly admit, unknown uncertainty, causes me to be very fearful. Having a panic disorder is the cause. The woods, animals, even the dark, isn't as scary as people. To all the kind people thank you!
I didn't realize, 1989 I had a brain injury. I've recovered, but I'm changed. Mom and dad said I was fearless as a little guy, after the accident i was an emotional wreck
Wow have only just met you, heard you interviewed on abc am & then watched your video on making Helen, my name also, make a cabin for Helen, then couldn’t stop, so just finished your kayak around South Africa! Amazing resilience & determination, your students must love your stories & how you saved $12,000 by building your office with rejects! Thanks Beau!
This content is absolutely spectacular. You are gripping to watch.
This is what it’s all about. People always ask what the meaning of life is, but they forget that it’s a choose your own adventure. Beau has just blown my mind. Watching these videos isn’t to dissimilar to an ice bath. What a wake up.
exactly. this is why Nietzsche to now to even centuries later when there will be man-made stem-cell organs making humans as close to God as can be, the puzzle of meaning will still be there. until we realize it doesn't have to be the same for everyone and that it is okay for you to give your life the meaning you want to give it, from where you are in life and have it change as you evolve and it doesn't make any of it less true/authentic.
today's truth might be obsolete tomorrow but it doesn't make it false today.
your truth might not be anyone else's, but it doesn't mean it is not true for you.
I'm from South Africa and this is absolutely amazing. You deserve so much more recognition!!
Just a fascinating human and fascinating story teller that should be recognised for the rest of our existence

100% I was about to post the exact same thing. Like some of the documentary or videos on RUclips,...... where I've seen homeless people be given something, then they immediately share it, often with a complete stranger.
the simplicity and kindness was heartwarming to watch..on a contrast the pissed of white man over a hat shortly after a friend died...yeah the difference is amazing
@@geejee1255 I don't believe it was really the hat that pissed him off but the piling of things that happened before, the hunger, the struggle of the waves and then his friend dying. In shock we like to grip to something real so our feelings can feel justified.
