making countless mistakes on my first sea kayaking expedition

- Homemade camera mount, homemade roof-racks, yellow kayak and industrial supply of sunscreen; head west young man! The film alludes to my underdone sea kayaking skills as I leave mainland Australia to explore three island archipelagos off Australia's southern coast. Tongue burnt, paddling scared, doing exactly what I set out to do, I learned a thing or two about myself and sea kayaking. The Green Paddle screened on U.S TV with the Outdoor Life Network.

Some people survive the learning curve. Some don't! He did, but this story could have had a very different ending. My Dad was a very experienced seaman and when I was a kid he told me, "The people who get ahead the fastest are the people who learn from other people's mistakes." Let's hope that viewers learn from vicariously experiencing the mistakes chronicled in this video. The life they save may well be their own...
well said
Hi beau! I doubt you remember me but you were one of my cabin counselors one year at sangamon... infact i was at your first showing at camp in the games room an even got one of your signed movies which ive since lost (rather upset about that) was thinkin back to those days at camp an wanted to watch your movie an was happy to find this re-edit you clearly havent aged a day in 15 years- hope life has been kind to you 🤘🏻
That's it, I've officially watched very single video on your channel! I think this was a fitting one to end on. I've found it very inspiring to watch them. You've motivated me to start going on more adventures in my own back yard, and to become more physically active in general. You've had a genuine, positive impact on me. I've bought your book, and am really enjoying it. Thanks for the inspiration! Looking forward to more.
Ditto - this is also the last video I watched and now I'm desperate for more. Some random click a few weeks ago has led to a slow binge and now I'm left hanging!
What a coincidence we are all finishing on the same video! The Beau Binge is a real thing @@em_pen
I remember when I first watched this video there was something like a thousand subscribers if that. I've watched it three or four times now it's great to see your channel still growing.
Absolutely love the intro, and the discussion of your dad's work, and the notion of 'reframing' changing the perspective and feel of older projects, as a precursor to your own re edit/imaging of your first film.
Your editing stands out already for how much it adds and emphasizes your stories; now I'm gonna hit play again and watch this film!
Mate, you were 23 here and already doing adventures like such? Gobsmacked!
Pretty darn thankful YT is fine tuning the algorithm and giving me this kind of awesome content! Well done and can't wait to binge you other material!!
Lessons learned friend. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thanks for posting.
Excellent Beau - it's an honest portrayal of how you became the experienced sea kayaking adventurer you are now. You called yourself stupid a few times on the film - something I do a lot myself, yet from these errors in judgement our wisdom grows the strongest. If an aspirant solo expedition sea kayaker asks me for advice, I'll suggest they watch this film. Thank you.
Good one Nick. All the little things right? I'm more and more attracted to the oldest people in the room at events as they tend to say the least, and know the most, and after a little cracking, have the best insights. I'll happily not be this person for a good while yet, but there is some accessible about a younger person revealing their insights as they seem to have less to lose? Best.
@@BeauMiles It's Interesting "young people have less to lose" - I don't agree. The one thing we can't get more of, and therefore is the most valuable, is time.
So young people actually have the potential to lose the *most*
Just my thoughts :)
Excellent! Having hiked, camped, kayaked in my life I now cannot. I thoroughly enjoy your company as I vicariously do it thru you❤
Fantastic. 20 year old taking on the big sea. Just love it. You do mention in later videos that life has to be on the edge sometimes, that we do have to dare take chances to feel alive, you sure did and do. I am 52, always lived by that mentality, but at the same time I can feel a certain conservative tendency sneaking up on me. Still very much enjoy solo adventure, but find myself more often than before, enjoying the company of likeminded on these longer trips. Your first feature film is MUCH better than mine after 6 years filming. Love your story telling.
The Swedish east-archipelago, Roden, is my backdoor and I just bought my first kayak. This video taught me a lot. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your passion and fire with us all 🙏
Paddle on run on cycle on...
Love 🙂😉🙃😊😇✨
@13:38 I was dying laughing, it's been a while since i've laughed that much! Thanks for the laugh, mate
I’m a newbie to sea kayaking and I was really pleased that you made a wise decision to trek it back. Applying wisdom in decision making as an adventurer is one of the necessary skills. Wonderful film making too, its had me riveted!
Thanks Cath. Lots coming in 2019, so sign up!
Fantastic paddle, scary as hell but epic! Thanks for sharing. :)
Go for a paddle he says, don't die he says... simple 😉👍🥴 great stuff again Beau
Huge effort 👍🏼
I am good mates with Rob and still remember him telling me of his travels with you 👍🏼😁🍻
i thought i watched all ur vids but i missed this one somehow. enjoying it so far.
Dude, the only thing i'm disappointed at, is that you don't have more vids to engross myself in. Love love love. I'm heading to Chile travelling on Sunday and i'm even more excited for the adventures now.
The ending shot is gold, the sunset angle is quite perfect
I think we only feel brave after the event. the event is full of fears. but that's the rush of adventure. the thing is to keep sane. Epic film, Beau, congratulations.
Hello there from the UK 🇬🇧.. Like to say big thanks for sharing this amazing epic video. It really goes to show how difficult it can be just by having some knowledge.. . So yes basic common sense can develop in due course and lead to a more experienced kayaker as you mean to go on out into the great outdoors.. Finally it was a privilege to see this all natural interesting down to earth documented video.. 🇦🇺 🌊 🌊 🌊 🌊 🌊 🌊 🌊🛶 🌊 🌊 🌊 🌊 🌊
You are up 4,000 subs since the last video I watched yesterday. I’m not surprised. It’s all good stuff. I’m glad to have found your channel and grateful you are willing to share your experiences with the world. It’s inspiring. Please don’t stop :)
Pretty sure i have binged watched all your videos over two days.. Simple but outstanding story telling along the way. Fair play mate..
Totally should have called this the Green Miles , being seasick and all
Seriously impressive....makes me realize just how short life really is...wonderful inspiring channel...stay blessed
Epic trip! Thanks for sharing
Reminds me of my misadventures 25 years ago. Remember the feeling i had paddling amongst sharks on the way to Catalina Island. Think you will become a great expedition kayaker if you continue. Don't be afraid to get some training along the way by a qualified coach. Loved the video.
I got there in the end mate (that was 20 years ago now and have done a bunch since). Goodonya
It's a fucking buzz, isn't it, been enjoying the same crazy advnetures around Ireland myself for 15 or so years, lost at sea, lakes or rivers...risking it all to float into a dream (sometimes nightmare) world. Good on ya indeed.@@BeauMiles
Wow! Well done! Thanks for posting, buddy!
Hey Beau, why don't you have a go at making a Greenland paddle, would like to see how you get on with it, great films you have a good outlook, all the best.
It looks perfect!
Awesome! I enjoyed it!
Wow, LOVE this video. Keeping it real. Very inspiring. Looking forward to watching more.
Epic, put simply.
Brilliant. Great adventure. 👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Dude so amazing to see where it all started and how you progressed as a story teller and film maker. Thank you for sharing your stories
Really enjoyed your video I feel inspired to go and have another adventure
This is inspiring stuff! Thanks!
You're a legend bro.
I love your vids.
Top work Beau, inspiration! Loved the seal friends you found.
Awesome mate, thank you👍🏴
Inspirational adventure. Superb ! Thank you.
Truly a fantastic piece of art
I love this film
Beautifully done, and an epic journey for sure. I appreciate how much we can see your growth over these years of filming, and for sharing with us your wisdom. Thank you Beau
This video should have so many more views. Down right inspirational. 4th time watching it, and it never gets old
Great. Thank you!
Great first film mate. Well done. I really like the honest, open commentary especially about your initial naivete on this sort of trip.
I just completed the enitre east part of the Spanish coast, in a sea kayak of course (also on RUclips). Your videos were a great inspirational source, thanks! You call this "my first film", that makes it a classic. Cheers!
Maybe one day, mate. For now a good reference point. Congrats on Spanish paddle- sounds bloody brilliant.
I just happen to live in Spain, that is the main reason I started with the entire Spanish coast. Let´s think about the next plan. I admire the journeys you make in all those different parts of the world.
Just found your content and am working through . Thank you so much for sharing there inspiring videos that make me wanna stop wasting my life and get up and going . Thank you again from my heart.
Love your films! Super inspiring. I spent the best part of 9yrs studying Great Whites all around those spots. Living out by the islands and diving loads. It's the most beautiful part of the world.
Loved it. Well done. Appreciated your honesty. At 50 I did my first solo paddle. 23 days. Up north though in the GBR with no swell...but everything else. Hope you are still paddling.
This might be my favorite film of yours to date. Raw and inspiring. Reminds me of my first, and only, solo in BWCAW.
wow I didnt know this film existed . you have been a ledged for ages and a conscience and inspiration to all for just as long it seams
Thanks on behalf of me and all you have inspired and educated
Love it man 🤙
Great film.
Surfing that steely edge of “sending” and having enough humility to change course keeps us is a game changer. It’ felt like a shamanic journey.
Way to capture the vibe
👍👍
Wow. Inspirational. Thx.
now that was pretty cool.. crazy but just watching you made me think wow, I could never do that but maybe I could,
not what you did but something adventurous.
great to watch, thanks for sharing
Levi Gold Coast
Nice one Beaudy - very specky!
Love your channel, somehow it came up on my RUclips feed, I'm so glad!
Awesome film Beau! Just love it’s simplicity and honesty!
Thanks Allard. That's the aim my friend, and it isn't getting any easier- to show 'simplicity and honesty'. I seem to get bogged down in my own complexity as much as shedding the layers and just 'being')
Awesome video! Very Interesting
Another great video. Really enjoy your vids
An eye opener for you, and for me. I loved it.
Cheers David. It was indeed. The bug bit pretty hard after this one. I remember cooking up Africa in a caravan park in WA after my first shower in a couple of weeks.
I feel so inspired by your adventures. I'd been toying with the idea of an expedition down the Napo River from Ecuador to somewhere in Peru or Brazil, maybe even all the way to Atlantic. Between your inspiring adventures and being trapped in the house by this pandemic I feel like I just might have built up the motivation to go for it.
Good on ya, mate!
Brother, I just want to say, thank you! Adventure is the most enjoyable part of life and you've help me remember that life is about living, it's as simple as that!
We are all learning from your mistakes, which you are so open about, thank you Beau!
Fabulous documentary of your adventure, and endurance... warts and all ;)
Thanks, Mac
You're really inspiring, Beau! Couldn't hit subscribe quick enough. ♥️
This is good this is so good
so gutsy!!
Thank you . You really are a true legend. Blown away by your enthusiasm. Thanks again
Cheers, Russco. Appreciate the note. Go well mate.
Love it
Amazing video, all respect. Gives me the chills seeing you in those seas without PFD on.
the red and yellow thing he's wearing IS a flotation device
Beau's video's have me shopping for kayaks.
Same....new subscriber. Binge watching. Feeling very inspired. Thank you.
Thank you Jennn G (three g's!) ta for tuning in
When you are alone, it is all about decision making....Good reminder.
33:09 Love this montage
11:51 Hello Seal...
Inspirational
That was really enjoyable
Great film you should have great success
Thanks for taking me on your adventures.
I've been having a bit of a binge watch of this newly found material, it started with the beans diet. :)
Takes me back to a more adventurous self doing solo road trips by motor bike or car with a tent both here in Aus and back in NZ.
Solo at sea, in a kayak, stuff that but I can see the appeal :)
*Beau Selecta.*
Keep up the good work buddy.
Thanks Beau !
You bet!
great stuff,I am just about to dive into the world of kayak touring and your videos are great. peace , from Ireland .
Nice one, Anthony. Ripping coastline you have there mate. Wild and wooly and cold.
@@BeauMiles not a bad pint of Guinness either 😎 , if your ever over feel free to give us a shout. ☮️
Great video Beau
Why, thanks Adam. A tongue burning, mistake making, wanna-do-stuff young fella just dipping his toes into the world of filmmaking and sea kayaking...
awesome channel love this intro shot keep up the inspriation
As someone else said: you try, you make errors if you learn you live. You obviously learned. Good video, sincere and enjoyable.
Cheers for the note Fer- glad to hear it was worth a comment. Good stuff, and best.
It was worth more than a comment, it made me laugh and smile reflecting on your younger you, some of my own foolishness that I still do :-)
I’ve recently discovered your RUclips series video’s and binge-watched your kayaking adventures. A big thank you for filming it! Very inspiring to say the least - just living life in such an adventurous way! I love sea kayaking, but I’ve always just stuck to short 2-3 hr coast hugging paddles here in Perth - mainly because of the fear of sharks. So I have a question for you: how do you deal with that on your long trips on the big blue?
Hi mate. A) You quickly (ok, over time), come to recognise the difference between a dolphin and a shark. and B) know that they're always there; it's their turf; and plastic doesn't taste good, so keep looking forward and stats would say you'll be just fine.
@@BeauMiles they don't even like the taste of human! Problem is, after they've had a try, the human is probably not in a great state...
I did want to ask if you've had any close encounters? Ever seen one?
