Hey Scotty what are your thoughts on a 2003 Tahoe 4wd it’s my first car it’s got 300,000 miles on and runs great
Hey guys fluid changes should keep your pilot running a long long time. I change them myself. I can change the transmission fluid in literally 8 mins. One plug. Drain it and fill. Oil and filter one plug. approximately 10 mins. Transfer case 7 min 2 plugs drain and fill plug remove FIRST. Drain it and fill it up. Rear differential. two plugs fill and drain remove fill plug FIRST then drain and fill.12 min. Dealer quoted $1200.00 screw that. My cost about $125.00 for fluids.

@shadowman1992 Not so far and my mechanic works regularly on Hondas and has not pointed out any need for that.
@timjohnson5519 I mean if you made it to over 300k without one that's pretty amazing the reason I ask is because I don't want one right now lol so I wanted to see with your high mileage if you ever had one

Correct. Front wheel drive platform originating from the Odessy minivan. Not rear wheel drive. That’s why the can’t tow that much.
You are correct the Honda pilot is a fwd/awd crossover. Like it's twin the acura mdx. The acura rdx is just a fancier version of the Honda CR-V crossover. Sometimes I think scotty gives out the wrong info. But I trust whatever he says
Maybe this was the greatest car gift ever, but I drove my parents 2002 Honda CRV to 235000 before it gave up the ghost earlier this year, and I inherited it when it had 185000 miles, so maybe I had the second greatest! lol! @@jfam7913 Not 100 percent sure, as it would’ve cost too much money and time to exactly figure out, but there was no oil pressure at all, and the car wouldn’t start. It was a tough decision, but with the pandemic, I junked it for 200 bucks rather than go through the costly labor to tear the whole thing apart to see what was wrong. Well I'd say the BEST car in terms of reliability would be the 1994-2006 Toyota Camry, 1997-2005 Honda Accord, or the 1984-2013 Toyota 4Runner. But the Pilot is reasonably fantastic option for a great reliable, every day car.

What happened to the 2006-07 Accord?
@@Okoro17 Ok, now I am not saying the 2006-2007 ones are terrible vehicles, they weren't built as well as the '05 accords. For example they had faulty door lock actuator and it might cause power door locks to activate Intermittently, and it had warped front brake rotors which causes vibration when braking. They still are reliable as they were always, don't get me wrong, and these issues aren't that big of a deal, BUT, you're better off with the 1997-2005 models.

What do you expect from a Tesla driver
Makes so much sense having an old school, naturally aspirated engine in a large SUV. I don't understand why they put these tiny engines with turbo and gdi in these new heavy vehicles.
Scotty, you're a car genius. Thanks for teaching us all so much about cars.
Hey Justin, it has to do with our Governments putting enormous pressure on automakers to produce highly fuel efficient and less carbon polluting vehicles each year. They are increasing the benchmark every few years and naturally aspirated engines will not win those tests in the future. You will see more hybrids and small turbos until they eventually get phased out with electric vehicles due to Government intervention. There is a tax/fine if automakers fail to meet the emissions tests. =(
Turbos and superchargers also damage your catholic converters more sooner.
So they can break and make more money lol ...it’s a business
Why bother with CAFE standards when China doesn't abide with pollution regulation? We're all screwed no matter what we do thanks to them.
Yea, makes sense guys, its just a shame, a lot of new cars are beautiful piles of junk.

Um, those Pilots were notorious for radiator issues and automatic transmission problems
radiator is not so much of an issue... .an easy and less expensive fix... but those transmissions... boy its a gamble; for example the odyssey... its easier to pull teeth out of a cow's mouth than actually removing the transmission....
03-05 Pilots are notorious for transmissions and radiators. 06 and newer models are a little better.
I just bought this 03 pilot already have 240,000 KMs..what would be the symptoms for automatic trans problems?
I have an 05 Pilot with 210k. Just change the transmission fluid every 25-30k with a good one like maxlife or ams or mobile1 atf
Mine. I Bought it at 205,000 miles. that exact color... broke at 300, 000 i forgot to give its service... 100,000 miles without service.
This car has a 5 speed auto and not a 6 speed.. I’ve heard about a lot of issues with the transmission but the engine is a good engine.
If it's the same Honda V6 and auto tranny they put in the Saturn Vue, yeah, the material on the clutches would deteriorate prematurely...well known problem.
Exactly.

We had a 2004 and yes it had a lot of trans issues
@Mr Zeus All there automatic transmissions are bad in large vehicles unless you drive with a light foot , But not quite as bad as that 4 speed.

Scotty’s da man!
I said the same. I'm stupid too.
Kinda odd that this era had tons of transmission issues with the accord v6 and the odyssey, but not the pilot. Hmm..
I've heard of a few Pilots with bad transmissions... they're not rare rare but they happen.
The Pilot had a slightly different transmission cooling design. The transmission doesn't overheat like the Odyssey did.
We had an odyssey and It broke down
If I'm not mistaken, the 2005 MY was given a different clutch package so as to mitigate the chance of the transmission failing. That, and so the gearbox wouldn't slip off of 3rd gear.
My neighbor still has his 2nd gen Odyssey running fine with little maintenance. I guess he got lucky with one built on a Wednesday. Lol
Love Honda pilots.. hopefully they get their engine game back together with Earth Dreams
Do you think a 2005 Honda pilot would be a bad buy was thinking about ubering with it
Yes👍
Because currently there only getting 'wet dreams' with that 1.5 T GDI oil diluted engine 🤦
@N0RT2G0RD4U
A software fix for a hardware problem isn't fixing the issues....
Honda's quality (for new cars) is dropping
@N0RT2G0RD4U And it shortens engine life.
@N0RT2G0RD4U Yes but they did that AFTER my first transmission failure and it ended at 100k miles ,I purchased the extended warranty when I first bought the minivan since this was Honda's first large minivan and because Accords with a V6 also had trans issues if driven hard . Also this was after a horrendous experience with a Ford Windstar (which at the time was voted the best minivan by a major car magazine) on which I also got the extended warranty , I even got one on my mechanically reliable loaded 2014 Mazda 3S mainly because of all of the high end electronic options many of which have since failed and needs to go in again for the rear camera and the turn as you steer headlights.
My parents bought one of these in like 2003 while I was in HS. It was an ugly turquoise color but it was the first time they didn't buy an embarrassing minivan and I loved it. Took my driver test in it, snuck out at night a few times rolling it down the driveway in neutral, almost crashed it racing my friend in his mom's Izuzu suv lol. Miss that thing, the big headlights look outdated now but still think the rear looks good compared to new suvs.
Hoping to get a quick reply. Am looking at a 2003 Honda Pilot EX with 275,000 for $2300. Under the hood is clean and good solid test drive. Recommended buy?

I’m 43. I’ve been a NASCAR fan since I was around 10 years old in ‘87. Maybe a little earlier because I remember Darryl Waltrip running the Mountain Dew Regal and that might have been ‘85. don’t know about other sports but I can tell you NASCAR has killed itself, it isn’t dying due to kids not interested in cars. NASCAR was rivaling the NFL in the late 90s and early 2000s as far as popularity. Then #3 died. Then all the rule changes hit. Then the ugly and homogenous car of tomorrow. Then the playoff system. Then each race was divided into halves. They kept mucking with everything that made it great, that made it must-watch TV for 3 hours every Sunday in summer. And instead of 130,000 at Charlotte Motor Speedway they’re getting 50,000. NASCAR did it to themselves. They drove away the die-hard enthusiasts.
Our 2007 Honda Pilot EX-L we bought brand new is still kicking down the road at 210K plus miles with the original engine and transmission. We've done the regular maintenance on it and just spent last week replacing the power steering o-rings since it was whining. Love this car and it's pretty easy I think to work on if you have to.
My 07 has been ultra reliable as well. I also did the o rings on the PS pump along with engine mounts and replaced all 4 TPMS sensors.
Have you ever had a valve adjustment done on your pilot?
I am sorry, I have to comment on this. Scotty said that the Pilot's interior is in immaculate shape. The roof liner is caving in. Now I know that this was a common issue in Hondas at that time and I don't dispute the fact that it is by and large a quality vehicle. However, if it's a Hyundai, the anti-Korea basis comes out. We saw it with the Santa Fe and that too is a quality vehicle. So I don't know what he has against the Koreans.
They break more than Hondas and Toyotas.
The Korean cars are not bad, but Scotty says they won't last 300,000 miles like the Japanese cars do.
@@slowanddeliberate6893 The problem with that argument is that the Korean brands actually do last 300,000 miles or more. There are owners forums and RUclips videos that prove this repeatedly.

I will tell you, these things aren't slow. They are heavy, but its does move. I have an 2005 and its great.
anyone gonna mention how he said it was a RWD bias when it's clearly a transverse mounted engine?
we love scotty
We don't care. We love Scotty. He can have all the minor info mistakes he can have. He's a legend already as he already helped me a lot with fixing my pick up truck.
It's both rwd bias and it has a transverse mounted engine. He wasn't wrong
@@GuerreroDelInfo wrong.
ur thinking of SH-AWD exclusive to Acura.
a subaru man knows his awd
@@GuerreroDelInfo no it’s a front wheel drive biased car with awd if it slips up front. it’s still a very powerful platform and i still really do like scotty.
The pictures he posts when he laughs 😂😂😂
Got one and yep one of the best Honda’s I’ve had. Honda makes the best of everything that come outta their doors
Scotty you are the best. Thank you for all true info you post .especially about 94 celica and all wheel drive celica 5SP imported from japan.JDM.
I thought it was a 5 speed? And I thought they had a lot of problems.
@AC Cobra still more reliable than a gm or dodge product
It is and they do. The 03-05 pilots have great engines but are known for tyranny and radiator problems. Don't know what Scotty is thinking on this one.
@@cocmaster4474 I agree!
Just realized, he might be saying all of this because it's a free car.
These Pilots have 2 major problems.
First is rust. Especially the rear subframe mounts and rear bumper reinforcement bar. Before buying one, definitely look for frame rust. It can be repaired by someone who knows what they're doing. But if you can't do it, it's expensive. Especially if you buy formed replacement rails and reinforcements. Parts are around $500 each and you can need between 2 and 8 pieces depending on how bad it is. You can also make everything yourself out of plate steel for a lot cheaper if you know what you're doing. Maybe a few hundred in metal and supplies.
Second, the transmission and rear differential require very frequent fluid changes. And although you may be able to use different transmission fluid. The rear differential fluid is something that is a Honda specialized fluid. Nobody else makes it. It's around $25-35 a gallon. It's just under a gallon capacity and it needs changed every 30-50k miles if I recall.
Otherwise they're a really good vehicle. My wife has a 2004 and I drove it in the snow last winter and I was surprised how well it did. I've never driven anything that drove that well in snow.
That's my $.02
Great review on the Pilot Scotty. I have a 2007 Pilot with 217,000 miles (349,000km). Runs perfect! I do my own maintenance by following the Honda schedule. Except I had Honda do the timing belt, water pump & tensioner. Good for another 100,000km. Good to go!
Have you ever had a valve adjustment done on your pilot?
No. It’s due for one. I bought it certified used thru a Honda dealership so they did everything.
You gotta be careful with this generation Pilot. They can have transmission problems, same with its platform twin the MDX.
Which years?
My father in law had a 2004. I did a lot of the maintenance on it for him. The trans gave out at 348k. It was an awesome vehicle!
Have you ever had a valve adjustment done on your pilot?
So how many used cars were removed to the crusher in the cash for clunkers, economic "stimulus" deal? I read at least 240,000. No parts could be sold. None.
How many dependable 22R Toyotas?
Iron Duke Pontiacs? Ford 1600cc?
Datsuns?
All the easy simple stick shift cars.
Just for a $2,000 rebate at the dealer.
Who was the Prez then? Get it again in the rear, if this election goes hard left.
All those cars could be modded with intakes, carbs, cams and headers. And still get 23mpg city.
scotty just found gold and he only got 914 views? weird
See this is comedy right here
That's a like for you sir
Scotty how big of a job to replace a ecu on a 2008 Honda Pilot?
The 5 spd transmission is a piece of junk. The v6 engine with vcm is also problematic. Do some research and Avoid them like a plague.
The VCM only ever came with the 2009-2015 MY, and the 5-speed issues were resolved (mostly) by 2006. Research done.
@@ryanpham3308 my 2005 have a vcm in case you are wondering
Does it say VTEC on the engine cover, or does it say VCM, @@gingerbreadman732?
@@ryanpham3308 total waste of time
Like your argument, @@gingerbreadman732?
The 2005 MY had the regular VTEC, and I'm sure I needn't remind you what that means. We can agree on the "i-VTEC VCM" found in the 2nd-gen Pilot being a pile of junk (I'd kill it if I had one), but seriously: compile your argument more accordingly before you contribute a "total waste of time" in the comments section.
Guess he hasn't moved yet?
2008 Honda Pilot here bought in 2010, which has been up and down the east coast and throughout Europe (still only 129K miles on it). Great vehicle, still running strong. Just replaced timing belt, water pump, and serpentine belt just to make sure we have no issues. Today, just bought the parts to replace the front suspension (lower control arm bushing cracked open), and therefore getting the whole suspension done to make it ride 100% again, but now I'm thinking we still have time on some of the items.. Either way though, like you mentioned Scotty, my wife feels so much more safer in that 14 year old SUV than my 7 year old Civic. Great video!
I don't consider the Pilot to be a full-size SUV. Try the Ford Expedition, the Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban, Lexus LX, or even the long-wheelbase Range Rover.
It's mid-size at best.
I think Ed Wallace said he planned out his 40 mile commute in a mini EV, with regenerative braking. On his return, the battery was near 95% recharged.
Topographical map and Issac Newton.
The 2006-2008 is a refreshed 2003-2005. They used a way more reliable automatic in the 2006-2008. Avoid the 2003-2005 pilot or any 2003-2005 Honda.
Hey Scotty! Just found this one on the pilot, been driving mine almost 3.5 years. It's a 2005 with lil over 232k, in miles on it. The vtm-4 lock is only for 1st or 2nd gear with a warning not to use on flat ground. Bought mine 3900 CDN with about 150k on the odometer.
Don’t be fooled these have bad trans but if you put a large trans oil cooler you won’t have a problem
From what I've seen on Scotty's channel, if I wanted a good, cheap used car, and if I couldn't find a Toyota, or Honda, I'd choose a Ford with a V8 as an inexpensive option. My first choice would always be a Honda, although I'm getting converted to a Toyota fan fast enough.
Older cars I'd pick a Honda because I'm a fan and you get about the same quality in either make, but brand new cars I'd definitely go with a Toyota. Honda has slipped a bit in the last few years
In the 90's, honda was just as good as toyota
@@EthanBradshaw It seems like Honda went downhill fast when they redesigned the Pilot in 2016. The hip level center console between the front seats was a major selling point for me, and I was on the verge of getting a 2016 or 2017 Honda Pilot until I saw how many owners were complaining about transmission problems. Seems like a lot of owners of the similar year Odysseys were complaining about transmission problems as well. I am strongly considering getting a Pilot, but it will be one of the pre-2016 models.
I have to say most hondas have better handling and even more comfortable than toyotas.
Having had both I must agree, but my Toyota has been much more reliable.
My 2004 Honda Pilot has 240k on it. I'm starting to put shocks in the rear and struts up front. But other then timing belts and water pumps the thing is a tank. Value lash adjustment at 205k. Now my kids drive it lol
Scotty what do you prefer a pathfinder 2007 or this?? Im having a hard time deciding between both.
Change that transmission fluid!!!!
Hey Scotty, my mom has a manual 1999 Nissan sentra with 375000 miles. Any problems to watch out for
Is your mom hot?
Ha. Take your pick
I have the same year 03 Pilot with 238.343 miles, I only replaced the timing chain, water pump and engine support, this Honda runs great 👍 thanks Scotty for the Vid
Have you ever had a valve adjustment done on your pilot?
I thought the 03 and 04s had major transmission issues???
This gotta be Scotty favor line "start right up" for honda and toyota... other cars ..... 🤐
I thought those Pilots had those bad transmissions like the Odyssey does.
It does. Once it reaches 200K, the car is done for just like every other Honda 6 cylinders
True. My families 04 odyssey had 245k before it was totaled.
Nice pick Scotty...i have the crv sane year...perfect vehicle...it just keeps going and going and going...
Transmission will fail soon
When is Scotty going to do a "I just found the best Chrysler Minivan and I'm buying it" video?
Scotty i am looking to buy a 2003 4runner or sequoia. Which is better?
@5:30 mark. Engineer at Honda daydreaming about Miyuki and her nice tight suspension. So smooth.
I'm thinking about buying an 04 pilot, the only reservation I have is the milage, it has 245 thousand miles. I've seen them with more miles but it still makes me a little nervous.
Was the timing belt ever changed on that Honda Pilot?
For as long as I've owned mine, the timing belt was changed out every 40k. I'd assume this guy did the same.
Only real problems I've ever had was a cracked valve, loose front ball joints & tie rods, and an alternator failure at 250k (mine still runs at 258k). Otherwise, it's been driving like an angel.
As for the transmission, the fluid has been changed out every 25k. It has yet to fail on me, but we bought a spare, just in case it does.
I paid over $1,000 to have the timing belt and water pump changed on my 2000 Honda minivan at an independent mechanic. I have a Toyota with a timing chain now !
@@ryanpham3308 You did a transmission oil change with every other oil change ... OMG
@@HEMI345S oil is cheap, engines and transmissions are EXPENSIVE.
@@ryanpham3308 Timing belt is good for 105k miles per factory manual.
I have a 2007 Honda Pilot with 270,000 miles on it. Great car.
Same here and I have 207,000 miles
I had one of these and it was great. I had one major issue with, when the radiator goes it mixes with the transmission oil ruining the car. I ended up getting a transmission cooler to fix the issue. I think the towing I was doing and hot climate caused the problems.
I might get a spare radiator from the local U-Pull-R-Parts soon, just to prepare for that. Thanks for the heads up!
@@ryanpham3308 fyi the transmission cooler is a better option imo because the radiators are aluminum I went threw 2 of them to figure that out after the dealer replacement which they charged me 1300 to replace went bad after 8 months they informed me the part warranty was only good for 6.
Good point, @@key1932. Although I might end up getting both, in case the cooler and radiator become complimentary towards each other.
