The Only Time The Queen Questioned My Food! " Veiled Farmer's Daughter"
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- When The Queen sends a note to you in the royal kitchen you know you are in trouble. In this video I share the only time she questioned my food... and it was my fault! But after I explained, she went on to order this dish again and again, especially at Balmoral Castle where the soft berries grow in abundance. Super easy recipe, perfect for breakfast, brunch or lunch.

“What or who” 🤣 a bit of Her Majesty’s sense of humor peeking through
I'm watching this video on august 2024 and i noticed the date if release.
It was published 3 weeks before the Queen's passing.
I hope she was able to enjoy this dessert until the very end.
I do so love your stories, and I think this is my favorite! (Until the next one, that is!) This dish sounds divine! A while ago I took your advice and ordered vanilla bean paste from Vanilla Bean Kings. I am now a vanilla bean paste "convert" and suspect that I will become a Muscovado sugar convert once I try it! As always, I thank you so much for sharing your delicious recipes with charm, humor, and an occasional introduction to a "must have" ingredient! ♥
My deepest sympathies to the loss of your Queen. You served her well. She was admired and loved around the world. May she be reunited with her beloved husband and God grant her eternal rest.
My grandmother used to make «Tilslørte bondepiker» when I was a child. She made it with apples, since they had a big applegarden at their farm. It was my favourite dessert. I have the bowl she always used to serve it in. She passed away in 1994, 93 years old. Good memories 😊❤🇳🇴
Favorittdesserten min. Det britiske navnet følger samme logikk som den norske oppskriften.
Darren McGrady, you’re a wonderful Chef and it’s always a pleasure watching you and learning from you. I pray God’s peace be on you and your family, with the passing of the Queen today. You definitely blessed her life and I’m sure that she’s blessed yours. God bless you Chef.
Hi how are you doing 😊
may god's grace be with you as you mourn the queen's passing, it must be so hard on you CHEF, be strong be steadfast as always , the queen loved your MENUS!!!!
I am deeply saddened at the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. My deepest condolences to you, Chef McGrady, and all who were close to her. Quite fitting that this last video features a dish that she loved to eat at Balmoral Castle. Thank you for taking such good care of her throughout the years. You truly are a kind and great man. Bless you. God save the King.
I’ve come to say the same, but I couldn’t phrase it any better than you have. Deep and sincere condolences to the family but also to Chef McGrady. I know you brought so much richness to their lives. One might be comforted by the fact that she is with Prince Philip again.
Oh no, an old bag lived like a white god for almost a century and finally had to give it up. 😥😥
@@ashleywilkonson386 so you went out of your way to come to a channel that I'm guessing you are not subscribed to just to say that? You do know there is a name for those who do that right?

Dear Darren, my heart felt sympathies for the loss of our Queen and it must be deeply personal for you. God bless and may you be grieved but joyful knowing she’s enjoying strawberries with Our Lord.
Guess i wasn’t the only one looking for a new video
@@finncruz8748 there's an interview with him by an American news channel talking about her Majesty's passing. I don't have a link you'll have to Google it, sorry.
God would save the Queen, and everyone. Still, it is the Pride-ideology that prevails in Europe, like so: pastor John Sherwood, 71, London ,arrested. JOHN 11:25-26: "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
This was uploaded less then a month before her passing 🥺
Lol
Even on my most gray days Darren, your stories always make me smile. Never change.
I’m right there with you today. A dark day for me and his story brought me a bit of light.
Some channels are just good at that.

Congratulations on the RUclips award we see on the shelfe in the left background!
This dessert looks so good!
Please make a video soon friend, I know its hard transitioning from Queen to King - but hey, there is nothing wrong showing us what King Charles loves!
First person I thought about when I heard of the Queens passing was Darren.
My heart's so heavy as I watch this. I'm American but I believe many girls like me grew up fascinated by the Queen. Who didn't know who Queen Elizabeth was?!? I'm 63 and of course she's been the Queen since before I was born. I loved her too. It's hard to believe that Queen Elizabeth was still with us just a few short weeks ago.
My heartfelt sympathy to The Royal Family, friends, and all who knew her as Queen. ❤️😔
Chef Darrin, when I saw that Queen Elizabeth passed away yesterday, you were the first person I thought of. My deepest condolences to you and your family, I know this must be a very difficult time, and I hope that all of the wonderful times you had while working at the Palace will sustain you in the coming days! Take care, good sir!
I have no doubt after she received the recipe The Queen responded, "I see. Oh, yes that sounds very nice. Please include this dish on the menu". How could you go wrong with fresh fruit, whipped cream and a little touch of sweet crunchiness?
Most of the year it’s good jam (traditionally apple, but other jams work too) rather than fresh fruit, but I get what you mean. I also recommend doing the same with yoghurt and granola instead of whipped cream and breadcrumbs. If you have fresh fruit, sweetened yoghurt is good, but for jam I recommend unsweetened because there’s already quite a lot of sugar in the jam.
I thought that was Taco meat in the thumbnail
@@ragnkja That is one of my favorite variations. I like yogurt much more than whipped cream. Here in Florida, in season blueberries, or peaches, with yogurt and granola is excellent.
@@theaetherealcat
And it only takes a few extra seconds to make a quick snack look like a pudding fit for royalty (“dessert” is whatever course is served last, so a pudding isn’t necessarily dessert).
Traditionally it’s made with fresh apples, cut into slices, boiled soft with water and sugar and mashed. Served fresh and warm with sweet crumbs the way he prepared it and whipped cream. This is the summer variation. With apples, it’s a classic and delicious winter/Christmas desert.
I bet Her Majesty The Queen just gets a wee giggle from watching your videos Chef.
Hi how are you doing 😊
Chef, we watched your fish & chips episodes and wanted to try salad cream (and HP brown sauce) so we ordered them from U.K. (We live in DC)...wow those are different flavors! But they are delicious- thank you for the awesome videos and suggestions- you broaden our horizons!
Salad cream is my dressing of choice on a watercress salad. There are some easy recipes for it on RUclips. I still miss HP. Nothing quite like it, likewise the more fruity Daddies sauce.
Hi Scott how are you doing 😊
@@mariarusso1325 Hi Maria! I'm well, thank you- I hope you are well and good, too.
@@scottfulps2065 I’m well Scott, nice to meet you here. I saw your pic here and that’s why i wrote you. Hope you don’t mind 😊
Hey Scott, I’m British and I live in Maryland and you can get salad cream and HP sauce in Baltimore area ( or even Frederick) HMarts, which is an Asian grocery store. My Frederick Costco has haddock which is my choice for fish and chips. Good luck, Maria
Looks delish. I will try it for sure. Oh, BTW, Hope you had a pleasant International Lefthander's Day (Aug 13th). Lefties rule!
Hi, Darren. Just heard the Queen’s death. Such a sad day. An end of an Era. May God bless her in peace.
How could she be unhappy with any dish you served her? You’re marvelous!
I really love easy and simplistic recipes like this where you can keep them as is or dress them up with a few extras. I enjoy the stories of your time spent with the royal family. I'd like to hear about happy accidents or last minute emergency substitutions that turned into rotating menu items or became favorites.
Rest in Peace to a beloved Queen. I hope you can bring us one more favourite dish to send her off in style. Heavy heart for a special person.
It would also be good with graham cracker crumbles. Just crumble some graham crackers, butter, cinnamon and some sugar, and then toast in oven.
Chef, it was so nice to see you on Fox as a commentator for the Queens funeral…sorry for your loss….
I'm lost for words at the Queen's passing,it came as a shock.
My deepest condolences to you Chef McGrady,The Royal Family and England🌹

Waiting for you to do a video after the Queen's death, take some time off to mourn her. May she rest in peace
I specifically came to your channel to offer my condolences at the passing of the Queen. I've long enjoyed your authentic renditions of your time with the Royal Family and can only assume your grief today. Thank you, and please continue your excellent storytelling. It brings joy and helps to keep her memory alive. Also, excellent use of a "write up".
Thank you Darren, what a joy listening to this story. "Veiled Farmer's Daughter" is going on the dinner menu and it will be a happy surprise. XXOO
I saw the note and the first thought I has was 'the queen uses ?! too' haha
Great story and recipe as usual, I love the vibes your videos give off, I have no trouble thinking of Princess Diana sharing stories and making coffee for you!
brilliant post Darren as always 👏 👍 the note from HRH , one was not amused 😉
Since Her Majesty has passed, will you comment more on the Queen's diet and your own feelings for this lovely lady?
I just cried seeing this video because this was made a month ago. My deepest sympathies to you, the royal family. I grew up watching the royal family on TV here in America. Such beauty and class the Queen Elizabeth and princess Diana had. I enjoy watching your videos.
As a swede I know this dish but I’ve never heard it being referred to as veiled farmers daughter. We usually refer to it as änglamat which basically means angel food! 👼
Interesting, because in Norwegian, Danish and German it’s definitely veiled farmers’ daughters. The German wiki page suggests Holstein as the origin of the dish, which explains why it’s found in both Scandinavia and Frisia.
@@mariawerner8447
No, Norwegian. The Danish say it the other way around (farmer-girl with veil, rather than veiled farmer-girl).
@@mariawerner8447
Yeah, the pronunciation was definitely way off! Getting the stress/tonality was probably too much to hope for (tone 2, which all compound words use, as well as many simple words, is notoriously difficult for anyone who isn’t used to lexical tonality, which is why people outside of Scandinavia never get my name right), but he didn’t exactly nail the phonemes either.
Looks delicious, it's a bit like Cranachan, except with strawberries instead of raspberries (and the whiskey!)
The traditional version is usually with apple jam, but strawberries are more visually pleasing.
That intro with Winston and the leg of lamb is so darned hokey! I love it!
I am an American living in the UK (because I married a lovely British lady). It happens that the mother-in-law of my wife's good friend works/lives at Sandringham House, a royal residence, and has frequent contact with the Queen. Thus, I am only three degrees away from Her Majesty! For that reason, this channel is especially interesting to me.
Hi Mike how are you doing 😊
It’s good to see your smiling face amongst the sadness we are all suffering. My sincerest best to you Sir, I’m sure this must be a particularly saddening time for you. Godspeed. 🙏🏾
Love it, I’m Norwegian and we had Tilslørte bondepiker often as an dessert. Hope the Queen liked it , you’re version looks delicious!! Yummy
Is this video very dark or just my phone??
You were one of the first people I thought about when I heard of the Queen's passing, Darren... I thought, "he must be heartbroken!"... sending you love and light and my heartfelt condolences... God give you peace and strength as you mourn...
Aah, the "Tilslørte bondepiker"-dish... (!) Daren made it sound as teal-slaughter, but it's pronounced more like "flirt", sort of like "till-slirt"...(!) 😊😋👍
I love your recipes so much! It must be such an honor to cook for the Her Majesty The Queen! This looks yummy!
Wow this looks so good !! The queen was so lucky to have such a wonderful chef
I’ve been thinking of you Darren, so I came here and watched a few of your videos.
As a nurse, my eyes have been drawn to the lump on your head. There are telltale signs (radiotherapy burns?) for me, that tell me that you’re going through some kind if treatment.
I hope you’re ok and I hope this time will pass swiftly for you.
I’m missing your videos. I’m
Going to buy your books tomorrow. God bless you 🙏🏻
How surreal I watched this a few days ago. Watching again now as the queen has passed on. What a seismic historical moment. Rest well your majesty

Was the Queen ever known to slip into the kitchen at night and make her own sandwich ?
You must be so saddened. Take care. We look forward to hearing more from you when you've recovered. It's hard. I cried instantly when I heard the news on TV and felt an amazing pain inside. I continue to watch the unfolding events and wonder how the family is holding up under the strain of their sorrow and the work that is expected of them.
Hi Darren. I am a subscriber on You Tube and look forward to, and enjoy your videos.. I just wanted to offer my heartfelt and sincere condolences on the loss of your Beloved Queen. As an American, I didn't know her personally, but always liked her. She was a true Lady in every sense of the word and always carried herself with grace and dignity. Hi how are you doing 😊
Make a new video of a recipe of queens favorite dish you never showed as a tribute Rip her majesty the Queen 1926-2022
How about a little video . Like a little tribute to your former employer…
Why don’t we see any more videos from Darren? 😢
Looks Amazing. 💂♂️🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧👑
Aren’t you going to post about the Queens death?
I hope that’s a photocopy :) I would have the original letter from the Queen framed!
I happened to bump into this video while eating some delicious strawberries I found on sale a couple days ago. I’m glad you were able to explain it to the Queen about accidentally forgetting to send the recipe, Darren.
As a Norwegian (and therefore as someone who has known this dish since childhood), I’d say her response was exactly how I’d expect someone to respond to seeing the name in an obvious food-context without explanation.
Cheers! Nice recipe!!! I hope Winston got a bite!😉!!!👑👑👑
I was taught that at middle school UK . I was so pleased with myself. That was 40 years .Always wanted to recreate .Thankyou you have brought back a very happy memory x
Looks absolutely yummy!
Love your videos with your recipes and stories about the time you were a royal chef!
Are you sad
Maybe he's mourning her quietly...some of the comments are silly.
To be fair, I think a majority of the comments are showing concern and may not be able to express that via a comment. Then there are those who don’t understand tact or diplomacy. I tend to agree with you and can only hope he’s well. 🙏🏾
What was HM's reaction when she first tried the recipe?
I love Lady Diana. who ever has had a person connect with her, i would give my ears to them. i would like to try your roasted chicken and english breakfast. Will come back to you. can you please give recipes for microwave food. All don't have oven. Thank you for sharing
Hi Darren, loved the recipe..I have a question..Have you cooked any Indian recipe for the Queen or any member of the royal family?
I am deeply saddened by the passing of her majesty. Darren I’m sure you have many memories that will make you smile. I’m hoping King Charles doesn’t cock it up and just does his mum and dad proud. God save the king !
Whoever is shooting and editing has really upped their game. Great video!
For some reason RUclips stopped sending me notifications from your channel and with her Majesty the Queen's passing I was inevitably reminded of your videos. I truly hope you are doing well and to see you through my phone’s screen really soon. My best regards for you and your loved ones ❤️
Maybe you could invent a cookery based exercise programme? Plenty of whisking & stirring, pouring of heavy jugs, carrying of potato laden baking trays, bending down to check the oven, carrying of tea stays down corridoors etc.
love your channel great stories miss the QUEEN.........
Love the stories that go along with the recipes. Love from California.

Dreadful waste of a strawberries, even if you have an abundant supply, the way you cut off the top section and throw it away.
It is called Tilsløret bondepiker if you are looking on a menu in Norway
Love the channel and hope your happy and well!
Western cooking is really simple compared to Asian food.
So sorry for your loss and all at the palace. She was such a fabulous Queen! Thank you for your services to her over the years. God bless you.xx
That took me a while. “Tilslørede bondepiger” direct translation.
It's most likely a german desert and not a scandinavian one. The name of desert is german.
I personally would use orange juice as I dont add alcoholic ingredients into my food but this looks so good. At my high school grad many years ago. One of the nut free desserts (due to my allergy), was similar to this. Not quite as fancy but it tasted so good. I felt like my dessert was better then those who had the main dessert that had nuts in it. Some said to me how they wish they put on their form that they also had a nut allergy to be given the same dessert.
As soon as I saw "veiled farmer's daughter" I thought it would be a version of tilslørte bondepiker. In Norwegian this is normally translated as "veiled peasant girls" as opposed to farmer's daughter though. A fitting dish for Her Majesty as her first overseas state visit was to Norway in 1955, a country she held dear as she was second cousins with the countries head of state, King Harald V.
No, “bondepiker” are the daughters of the (self-owning) farmer, whereas “gårdsjenter” are peasant girls in general, or girls working on a farm.
I'm not a Royalist - as I've said before, but I respect history and love your stories and cooking. Being autistic with consequent sleep problems and a disabled person prone to clinical depression your warmth, kindness and gentle humour brighten up my days and - as now - my small hours. Two small questions please...if you are able to answer and can find time to do so.
1. How did you resolve the absent recipe gaffe - what means of grovelling was in place to avoid that fateful trip to Traitors' Gate?
2. When are you going to do that recipe for cawl - pronounced COWL for those who don't know - to satisfy we wild Welsh - who love the fact you have a Welsh forename?
i'd love the answer for this as well lol
I’m sure all he needed to do was send a reply with a recipe/description. And yes, the name, while mispronounced, really is translated correctly.
Your stories are always so interesting! Yes, I can imagine Her Majesty getting quite irked when you don't follow the rules. I don't blame her for wanting to know what she's eating, and what's in it! The title that comes with the dish doesn't sound very appealing! The Queen has quite an immense personality!
It’s more that it doesn’t say anything at all about what sort of dish it is. And I’m afraid I have no idea why it’s got that name, though it’s called something very similar in Norwegian (the name Darren used), Danish and German.
I saw your segment on Fox News yesterday about the Queen’s passing. I really enjoyed it.
Rest In Peace, Elizabeth II.
The the US, we call this a parfait.

My heart just broke when I heard about HM QE2 passing. She was an absolute icon and I respected her immensely. I am not a British citizen but share in the grief that you and your countrymen must be feeling. Thank you for sharing your stories and your love of cooking with us, and for giving us a glimpse of life within the royal walls of the House of Windsor.
Why is the video brightness turned down so much?
Okay hands up of all those who have whisk like a chicken. lol.

How can people say that the royal family is a waste of taxpayer money. The money is going to legends like him.
Hey Darren, was just wondering how the menu might change if the Queen would catch a cold or be under the weather?
Although I am and always will be a staunch royalist, I did find your comment quite hilarious. I’m sure her majesty would have laughed too, especially at “under the weather.” 😂 I know you weren’t being mean yet not even the great Darren’s cooking can bring her back now. May she rest in peace. 🙏🏾
