Treacle Tart - Harry Potter or Harry Wales

- I've never made a treacle tart for Harry Potter, but I know it's his favorite. i have made a treacle tart for Harry Wales though, many times. In the Royal nursery when Prince Harry and Prince William were young and into their teen years. It's a delicious traditional British comfort food and served hot or cold with whipped cream, ice cream or lashings of custard no wonder it has been on the Brits (and Royal) menus for years. Even The Queen enjoyed treacle tart and it was often on her menu (and requested by her) at Buckingham Palace.
It's the perfect alternative to the American pecan pie, a delicious and interesting change on the Thanksgiving table.

TREACLE TART
Serves 6-8
The pastry;
¾ cup plus 2Tbs granulated sugar
¾ cup plus 2 Tbs unsalted butter
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla paste
3 ½ cups flour
1/4 cup cold water
Cream the butter and sugar until light in color. Add the egg, water and vanilla paste then slowly incorporate the flour to form a ball. Wrap the paste in parchment paper and refrigerate for at least an hour before use.
This recipe will make more pastry than you need for this one tart, but I always like to have some in the refrigerator spare and it keeps for at least three weeks.
The filling;
1 lb tin golden syrup
2 cups (about 7 slices) fresh white breadcrumbs
juice of 1 lemon
Preheat an oven to 350 degrees f
Roll out the pastry to about ½ inch thick and line an 8 inch flan ring or pie dish. Blind bake to allow the crust to set a little.
In a large bowl combine the golden syrup, breadcrumbs and lemon juice and spoon into the lined pastry case.
Bake in the center of the oven for about 30 minutes or until the pastry edges are golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Slice and serve with Ice cream, whipped cream or English custard.

Great video! Not sure if you know this but you got a mention in the hit series, "The Crown". The actress who plays Princess Diana has a line in one of the latter episodes where she says, "Darren usually leaves me instructions," while trying to cook an omelet (and failing miserably).
Omg yesss!!! I loved it too but i would have preferred if they showed an actual interaction cuz Darren is so sweet and cute it would have been so wholesome
Yes when she was trying to make the omelet
I noticed this too!! My ears perked up
I heard that too and sent him a message on Instagram about it. So great! Darren is the best!!!
@@Jeannified Did he reply to you?
You were mentioned on The Crown (Netflix)
My favourite is apple crumble and custard or apple tart
Cute! Will definately try this!
Reminds me of the very sweet vinegar pie from down south in the States.
Thank you for another great video!
Never heard of it going to give it a shot
Harry Potter I know of. But who is Harry Wales? Do you mean Harry Markle?
Chef Darren! Did you see you were mentioned on the crown?
Missed seeing your videos, thanks for uploading 🙂
he was?
@@S_J_banana In episode 9, as Diana was about to make an omelet, she mentions Darren by name, saying he left her notes.
Treacle tart is golden syrup, bread crumbs and lemon juice? That’s it? I may try it if I ever get overseas but here in 🇨🇦 I will stick with the famous French Canadian “tarte au sucre” - also known as sugar pie. It has cream in it to make it extra yummy.
I've got my grandma's chess pie recipe that I make occasionally but I might have to add this treacle tart recipe because it's dead easy.
Treacle tart does make you think it really was something made out of hardly anything but a few leftovers maybe 🤷♀️
As a Asian person when I first read the books I thought it was some kind of magical world treats like chocolate frogs, found out later that it was a real thing when I got older. And as a sweet tooth I love this it.
I hope you caught (what I believe to be) the mention of *you* on The Crown!!! Hope you’re doing well, Darren.
Since reading HP decades ago I always wondered what treacle tart was...now I know and want to make some. Thank you!
Oh Darren, he's not Harry Wales any more.
Right, isn't he Harry Mountbatten-Windsor?
Harry Potter is my niece's favorite. Thanks for the recipe, I'm gonna surprise her next week at Thanksgiving.
I swear you must be psychic, Darren. I was dreaming of treacle tarts the other day. But it was the one from school where the school cooks would crush up cornflakes and add them as a top layer to make the pudding go further. Now I've got a 'classic' version to make, thanks to your recipe. Many thanks, Darren. Much appreciated.
I remember that at school. Sooo good
I've read the books numerous times and whenever treacle tart was mentioned, I was so curious what it is. Now I truly see it! Thanks so much Darren!
Chef Darren! I came straight when watching the crown season 5 and noticed they mentioned you! Those producers really do their research. Have you seen it?
Darren, I love your channel! 💖 That tart looks super yummy! I am definitely going to be making this tart very soon. Thank you so much for including the recipe in the "Description" section so that I do not have to try and frantically write down the ingredients during the video. Much appreciated.
P.S. I have a corgi / golden retriever mix who also likes to watch your channel, and especially loves Winston!
Hello have you got the giveaway prize because I had also got the same message and I don't know is it real or fake?

THIS IS A SCAM! Do not reply! A lot of RUclips channels that I look at are having trouble with these scammers lately. Just ignore these messages on RUclips. If you reply, they will try to scam you out of some money!!!
Mines currently in the oven! First time making pastry and I didn’t have a food processor, my parchment stuck when blind baking, and a multitude of other failings occoured, but, it still looks absolutely delicious. Fingers crossed it comes out of the oven looking as good as it did when it went in!
Dear Darren, I had all the ingredients to make a treacle tart, as I had all the ingredients in my larder I made it, we’re expecting visitors later week and it will be a delicious dessert. Hubby and I are both diabetics we’d have to eat the who tart ourselves……not good. It was so easy to make and will now along with your sausage roll recipe I look forward to making. ❤
I just completed harry potter's whole series all movies. And was really overwhelmed and happy and suddenly this video was uploaded and it is too interesting now🤗amazing recipe
Hey Darren!
Not sure how big or little of a fan of The Crown you are, but it seems like they made mentions of you in that show as well!
When I first read Harry Potter, I thought JK Rowling had made up the name "treacle tart"! I'd never heard of it. 🤣
Looks delicious. Gotta admit though, I'm scheming for a maple syrup version.
Will definately be making a couple of these next Christmas. My sister's and I are now in charge of hors d'oeuvres and after Easter I'll be taking over desserts. Oy lol
Nice video, will have to try the recipe. Hope you're doing well. You mentioned Prince Harry in the vid. Have you and he ever visited here in the states? Finally, Darren, Could you PLEASE tone down the background music in the video? It is to loud and distracting; the music drowns out what you are saying. I do have the captions on and volume down low.
So glad to see you back. Seems like ages. That recipe will definitely be on the Thanksgiving table! Thank you!
Sound so delicious Daren you are most amazing inspiring and incredible BEST CHEF 😊
My mum used to do a treacle tart, but instead of breadcrumbs would use lightly crushed cornflakes!! It was really good too!! xx
Back in my day it was the Famous Five with their 'lashings of ginger beer' haha. This one might be a bit too sweet for me.
That knife brand placement was less than subtle! 😂 Also the colour is really saturated except at the start and end… not sure what’s going on there The music is a bit weird too. But as usual, it looks delicious!
Please upload more! I love watching your videos!!!
An oddball question, good sir ... would it be too much to use black treacle instead of golden syrup? And what size tart tin did you use?
I was really surprised to see bread crumbs as an ingredient in the filling ... probably because I always presumed that "treacle tart" was basically an American pecan pie, just without the nuts. I take it the bread crumbs make the filling thicken and set just as the eggs do in a traditional pecan pie? Could I substitute a couple of eggs if I didn't have white bread crumbs on hand? Love the channel!
wonderful recipe as always! it's a joy every time you post a video! as a suggestion from an european viewer... can you translate your recipes in a more civilized measuring system, possibly based on the number 10? 😀 i know that your audience is probably used to fraction and weird tablespoon measuring, but i'm watching my poor old weight scale and she uses only grams and my oven accept only celsius degrees :D thank you so much!
When I'm faced with metric measurements I use google to convert. My food scales do both measurements too.
@@lesleynyborg2093 yes, but does your scale measure tablespoons? 😅
You have been missed Sir!!! Hope you and the family are well.
Love Potter! Thanks for making his favorite dessert! Looks yummy!
Great video! Might I make a request for a video on Christmas Pudding for the holidays this year? Thank you!
You make MOST BEAUTIFUL TARTS ❤❤❤
Please don’t refer to hawwy anymore. Sparry is a disgrace.
Always love your videos Darren! They are so charming and entertaining, and you make these delicious recipes look so easy! I also love how you always speak so fondly of your time with Princess Diana and the boys. 🥰
Thank you Darren, I hope you are in good health and wish you and your family many Blessings for the upcoming Christmas season.

Hey Darren, good to see you back! I hope all is going well. This looks really good I'll have to try it soon.
I can’t find anything below for GOLDEN SYRUP.
Hey Chef, thank you for this lovely video and the links. Can you please share with us your favorite pans as well? TIA
There’s a pie in the amish community in the northern US called “shoo-fly pie” that is essentially this with a crumble topping and molasses instead of treacle
oh Darren I just love your videos. very informative and you're funny too. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! I admit I'm one who does purchase pre-made doughs but this looks simple enough I'll give it a go. (and if it's cool I say: Your noggin is healing up nice and hope that path is still improving!)
I love treacle tart and I love sticky pudding, Which to have? Why not both? 😊 Love watching you prepare these tried and true, beloved recipes. You've certainly upped my baking game!
I normally only make savoury dishes, but your desert recipes are amazing, I cant wait to make them! 👍🤗😍🤩
Caught you mentioned in The Crown!!!!
Love the channel and how you were name dropped in The Crown!❤
Talk about timing! I was just watching the Lord Peter Wimsey story 'Clouds of Witness' (with Ian Carmichael and Glyn Hiouston) the other day. In the fourth episode, Lord Peter and Bunter are having luncheon at a pub, and treacle tart was on the menu.
Wait…DARREN’s BACK!!!! And Winston!!!! Wow!!! Nice!!!
Thank you so much you make my days so happy and joyful Daren 😊
Where can we get golden syrup? Love the recipes, thank you for sharing 💕
Darren, so happy to see you back with a new video. The tart looks very yummy. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
This looks amazing! I'm going to try it for Thanksgiving. Thank you so much, Darren! You mentioned a link for the "golden syrup," but I don't see it. (also the vanilla paste)
The content of the video is great! I love how genuine he feels talking, and he doesn’t feel the need to do things that most yt cooking shows do to be fancy (i guess thats the confidence you get from cooking for royals for years)- the video itself though, i can’t tell if I need to see my doctor or if the saturation is too high. Great video nonetheless
Great video Darren
I saw you on a Princess cruise lines video of the 360 experience!
It looked very interesting and hard to imagine how they show you what all your senses can experience!
Looks delicious.. thanks for sharing 💛Blessings
I was deliberating on what to make this weekend and you helped me out! I've been wanting to make this for a while and not sure what recipe to use. Thank you two-fold for the idea and the recipe (love using golden syrup).
Tell us how it comes out!
You’re mentioned in the crown
Oh Darren! Looks absolutely scrumptious. Thank you for another culinary delight.
Thanks again for another toothsome British treat! I will have to try this!
👋🙂 Hi Darren , I definitely want to try out Your Treacle Tart recipe. Thank You for sharing It . Sounds like a very Austere Traditional English recipe.
Is Golden Syrup also considered Treacle , however more dark than the lighter , Golden Syrup Color ? Are they considered the same like how they do Scotish Tablet different in various Homes - the recipe would be a Light to Golden , Toffee and then maybe to the dark Treacle , considered the darkest color. The particular color of Treacle ' is varied through House to House . Cause basically the Golden Syrup is the same recipe but cooked longer to like a Molasses color too , that is Treacle ? I wonder If.
When I visited London , I tried the English Toffee " at Harrods and It was really Dark Treacle Scotish Tablet , too Good! I keep on wanting more. ⚪️🤍
Treacle is much darker more intensely flavoured than golden syrup. Treacle is made from the syrup that remains after sugar is refined. Golden syrup is invert sugar syrup made by heating refined sugar with water.
You actually cooked for Princes William and Harry!? That is so cool!
Being American, I have never indulged in treacle tart, but it sounds delicious! If I could, I would make it myself.
Mr.Darren.... I must say, your video clips are full of funs, and good sense of humor...I just can't stop watching... I love your lovely Winston, you both are so,so adorable.
Thank you for sharing the stories, recipes, and anecdotes here for all to enjoy....
...it's not only entertaining and informative, it's historically important for coming generations.
I have to make this, it looks awesome, I’ve made several of your recipes. Thank you!
I look forward to your videos with anticipation and gleefully consume each one. I am definitely going to make this recipe and serve it as dessert for Thanksgiving this year! I cannot wait to see what you have next for us!
SO EXCITED!!! ❤
Thank you for sharing one of my favorite desserts. Yes treacle tart is sweet so I love it with cream. You have hit my favorites lately. Brings back great memories of my time in England.
Here in the U.S. we have a golden syrup called King syrup. Red label, and it's got a lion on it. When I was a kid, we would use it instead of maple syrup on pancakes and waffles. Definitely not bitter like mollasses, but not as bland sweet like straight corn syrup.
Interesting, I need to try this
@@Darren_McGrady I'm sure it's not as good as what you used, but it might be easier to get. Love your channel, btw ;)
Chef! eu amei. O sabor ficou guardado no coração. Obrigada.
You make me smile. What a lovely dessert. You surely make tart crust look easy easy to make .
Thank you Darren for an inspiring vlog. How mouth watering that tart looks and as you say a good one for Thanksgiving.
Yummy ❤ I could watch Darren cook all day 🤣
Tnanks so much, Darrent! That looks scrumptious :)
Belly-rubs to Winston
Hey Chef Darren, did you ever meet Pam Ayers? I have. She seems like a nice lady. She wrote a great poem about English puddings back in the late 70's when I think both of us were boys. She was waxing nostalgic about the puddings of her youth. Proper puddings. In a pudding cloth.
She said: Or else there'd be a great jam roly poly/ We'd watch it going underneath the knife/ And if you took a bit a bit too quick, Dear/ The red hot jam would scar you mouth for life.
Like the new chef coat
Thanks Darren. Love watching your videos. I’ve tried the lemon cake and the banana loaf and both came out divine!
why is this video so saturated
That looks amazing! I love seeing all you make in your videos 😊
I love treacle tart!! my British grandmama used to do it Sundays for me in Argentina!!!
I've wondered about Treacle Tarts since I was a kid watching the child catcher lure Jeremy and Jimima in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Love the channel and the recipes...you do a great job of presenting! Just one "but" - why the background music? Kind of distracting.
Hello from Texas! I'm so perplexed that there are breadcrumbs and no eggs in the filling. It is so opposite of our Pecan Pie while also being oddly similar. Perhaps I shall bake one using your recipe so that I may try it! But first to obtain some golden syrup!
The Treacle Tart looks very delicious. Thank you very much for sharing the recipes! 🍀 Kind regards from 🎂
This sounds great 😊
I don't know if you keep calling it treacle tart whether Americans would know what you are talking about? Just golden syrup tart might work?
Your videos are kind of a comfort to me now! Love your vids ❤
Many years ago I tried some Treacle tart and didn't like it, but I thought I'd give you version a go.... I still haven't changed my mind... However I have made some of you other recipes...... multiple times..... I'm surprised the Royal family wasn't a lot fatter.
I love hearing you talk and watching you cook thank you for making these amazing videos

This looks fabulous, I will definitely try it! By the way, it's very easy to make your own golden syrup--youtube has diy videos.
I can't find the video that said the name brand of ceramic bowls you use? They're gorgeous!
I bet it tastes close to southern buttermilk pie. Looks wonderful Chef.
What's with the color balance in this video? Your skin tones look like a pink grapefruit! Food looks great as always.
