The single version was sped up a bit and reverb was added to guarantee airplay on AM radio; and clear channel AM stations such as WABC in NewYork or CKLW which served Detroit as well as Ontario would literally beam their airwaves as far as Bermuda in the late night! Brown was smart, he knew exactly what he was doing. Rumor has it that when he heard one of his releases on the radio, he actually went to select radio stations to inform them that a batch of 45 RPM singles of one of his releases were off-center! He was his own Quality Control, A&R, Music Director.....GENIUS!!

WOW! Thanks for posting this. I hated this as a 12yo kid because it was off-key and just a raucous frenzy. Now I know why: They sped it up from 121bpm to 133bpm (!) and made it into a dance/disco hit so white radio would be more likely to play it. This version is way too funky for 1965 pop radio, but I've played it five times now and am linking this "correct original mono version" to all of the other wack versions posted. What a pleasure to hear this as it was really intended.

"Lotta words here, man." Hilarious, since the "lyrics" to most of his songs don't go much past "e yow we...good god"! Comedians like Eddie Murphy had some hilarious skits around James Brown's lyrical vocabulary. No question about it, though...JB kept his band air tight razor sharp and swinging. The hardest working man in show biz. And that was no joke.

Does anyone know exactly what he says at the right before the music starts? It's right at the beginning of this masterpiece and I still can't understand what he's says before, "THIS IS A HIT!"

#Ritmos

    My response to @franknelson4544
I GAVE THE LINE UP OF 5 or 6 SONGS WHERE FUNK GETS IT’S BIRTH FROM. THE SONG “THINK” IS IS THE BIRTH OF FUNK 1960, 1964 OUT OF SIGHT,1965 I FEEL GOOD,1965 PAPA’S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG,THEN 1967 COLD SWEAT,AFTER COLD SWEAT ALL GENRES OF (HIP UP BEATS OR FUNK)TAKES OFF AND THEY NEVER LOOKED BACK,ALL BANDS WHO PLAYED FUNK IS DRAWING FROM THE STANDARD OF COLD SWEAT,JAMES BROWN CAME ALONG AND ADDED A LOT OF SYNCOPATIONS AND CROSS RHYTHMS AND SINGLE HANDEDLY CHANGE THE GAME OF FUNK DRUMMERS,HIS BAND HAD A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON ALL FUNK MUSICIANS. JAMES BROWN MENTION THAT THE SONG PAPA’S BAG WAS THE FIRST SONG THAT HE FELT TO PUT THE EMPHASES ON THE “ONE” 2 3 4 “ONE”2 3 4,JAMES BROWN CLOSE THE DOOR TO THE “DOO WHOP” ERA.
    DOO WHOP AT 1964.

King records was NEVER in the groove with James Brown. Mr. Brown had to argue with Syd Nathan, (owner of King) about anything Brown wanted to do that was outside the boogie woogie bullshit Nathan was used to hearing.
