- "Mother Popcorn (You Got To Have a Mother For Me)" (Pt. 1 & 2) - James Brown (1969)
Album: It's a Mother
The "mother" in the song's title was Brown's honorific for "a big butt".
The song that gave his name to the Belgian Popcorn genre!

You are about to witness the eighth....put your hands together for the hardest-working man in show business, the Soul Brother #1, the Godfather of Soul......JAMES BROWN!" after this frickin' 40,000 people went ape shyt screaming! Best concert. Chicago's International Amphitheatre December 1969!
You smell that? That's James Brown making it FUNKY!!!!!
The one and only Godfather Of Soul. R.I.P J.B.
"They Don't Mak'em Funky Like This No Mo"!!!..
Ain’t dat da truth
James Brown was The Orchestrator of Funk , bar none , then came Sly and then came The PFunk Mob , but Brown was The First !!!!! Hit It
💯💯💯💯
Damn right!
This BAND is out of this world. 🌍
Clyde Stubblefield is the man! 😁
Hands Down the Father of Funk 👍🏾💯💪🏿🎵🎶🎵🤩👍🏾
This is why we young folks stayed in shape back then, had to because the music kept us on our feet.
Danced all night into the next day. We could not be without funk.
Man...I danced to this song in 1969 - and the dance was "the Popcorn.!"" CLASSIC!!
Remember the Four Corners Dance???
Best band there ever was, or ever will be.
OH you heard of JB?
Facts ✌🏽
The only man I know who could make a brass section sound so good🔥🔥🔥
Mr Brown you are missed🌷
I believe that Pee Ellis arranged the horns. Don’t believe Fred Westley had joined them yet.
Of all the songs that JB ever put out, this is the baddest one! Without a doubt this is the one. Mother Popcorn!
The Genius of James Brown....♥️😇♥️
GODFATHER OF SOUL- JAMES BROWN
FUNKY and TIGHT! Like a band should be!
....ya got-ta have a motha fa me”
Often imitated, NEVER DUPLICATED!!!
I TRULY REMEMBER DANCING, TO THIS AS A CHILD. FOR MY PARENTS COMPANY.🤣🤣
I was listening to this song and my mind went how as kids we danced for company. 😊
Oh so you were that kid too😂
"Maceo, blow your horn, I don't ant no trash! Give me some Popcorn! " This just sends chills up my spine.
Before there was Michael Jackson, Prince, or a Tupac James Brown ruled with an iron fist, and always will. May the funk always be with you Mr. Brown!!!
Jackson who?!
Prince who?
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊1q
Best part is, none of them wouldve made the music they did if James hadn't done what he did. I honestly think James had more of an impact on music during his time and since than anyone has or will ever have ever.
All those dudes would absolutely give props to JB. JB is the motherfucking progenitor. I honestly think that he is the best musical performer ever to walk the face of the earth.
I wore this Out..The Summer of 1969 !!!!!
Foundations of the funk.😎
These BROS were ahead of their time. James told all his band members they all play a drum. Genius!
The late sixties / early seventies were the best James Brown Funk period
therehastobeme I agree totally!
True, although another great song "Get Up Offa That Thing" is from the mid 70s
therehastobeme I couldn't agree with you more.
YES WITHOUT QUESTION
By 1974 Disco was rapidly rising. It almost killed the Funk.
This is straight up raw funk with no extra sugar or spice, everything contributes to the groove nothing wasted.
Got that right
Funky Chicken....Maceo.
Right on!
We’d be screaming give the drummer some!!
Yessirrr
Gotta have a Mother for me!!😅😅
This reminds me of summer nights..fried chicken..macaroni. candied yams..peach cobbler..and everybody doing the James Brown..back in the day..word up
I don’t know who is playing bass but DAMN!
Straight up Funk! James kept it Funky to the end. Thank you for giving us your gift of funk and soul.
Chadwick did his thing in Get on up.. during this scene. It was spot on.
Can’t Sit Still...
🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
The 60's 70's and 80's were straight up pure funk us ladies carried the funk.
Nothing but soul down to the very bones.Brown super ,super Bad!!!!!!!!!!
I still have the forty-five pressing.
No matter how many times I play it, I can't wear it out.
What a recording!
I won the record at a carnival for muscular dystrophy bobbing for apples! 👁️💓🎵❄️🌍❄️✌️😎👊
Something strange going on what they mean before them don't understand
I know such thing copycats
Sax made of pure funk.
The first heat in funky music
His band were amazing too, never forgotten.
no one living or dead can tell me different....
there was no man better than him....he was literally the inventor of this style...music didn't sound like this before HE got in the game...😊
Dorail Crayton A lot of rap artist got famous for using his music
PREACH!!!
The "JB" experience....
AGAIN WITHOUT QUESTION
I think even his organ and piano playing is dope.
when the drummer slams the hi-hat at 1:51 it just oozes funk, like for days. i can barely stand it, so good.
Mark Robohm yeah bro!!
Sure you right
I've always dug that part, too.
Clyde Stubblefield on drums
In every song I think he had two drummers on stage
James' music is being sampled more than any other . Commercials, athletic arenas, movies, tv promos etc. Truly a GIANT in the industry.
Check out 3 young Netherlands ladies jamming to James Brown. You watch one video you'll see them all.
Yes it was being sampled
But he was not the only
artist who has been sampled.
@@toneyisaiah3556 BUT THE MOST
Prince did the song it not good a s James brown the original
THIS is the tightest song of all the 100's of songs that James Brown Orchestra ever put out! And when James Brown calls on MACEO, that is it! It is locked in history. I can't talk anymore. Here it is 2020 and I'm still grooving on this one right here! Freddie P. Knight AKA Marvin J. Miller 1/17/2020
so rite tight
Yeah . . . POPCORN!!
James Brown is the reason I got into music in the 60’s. I got to be a promoter for him in the 80’s right after “Living in America” was released. He was an incredible person as well as an incredible musician.
A cold stone musician of all times the hardest working man in show business as it was always said everybody wanted join James Brown's Band my friend in Miami said to me I'm playing with James Brown production they finally got in playing in the Band
The funk just won't quit.
Everything is so tight with this song!! Funky horns, drums, and James singing on point!!! Doesn't get funkier than this song!! I also remember dancing to this song when I was a kid!! This was a MEGA hit and every kid learned how to do the Popcorn dance!!! THANK YOU JAMES!!
My main favorite song when was little my late mother's album born on May
3, 1939 RIP
Can't wait to see him in paradise
We loved James Brown so much I named my German Shepherd " Good Foot" and a friend named her dog "Pop Corn" JB was on the turntable non stop. 🔥
Ain't a rapper alive or dj born that can rip like Mr.Brown.
I STILL HAVE THIS 45 PRESSING.
AFTER ALL THE TIMES I'VE PLAYED IT, I STILL CAN'T WEAR IT OUT.
I once saw a picture of a Vietnam soldier with Mother Popcorn written on his helmet. Cool stuff....😎
🎶🎷🎸🎺🥁🎹🎤🎶JAMES BROWN👼🏾, BOBBY BYRD👼🏾, AND THE JB's BAND👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🌹💐🥀
The funkiest groove of ‘em all. 👌
James Brown has so many great songs. But my all-time favorite is Soul Power, but this one is right behind it!! 🙂
You still rock James Brown!!❤
The FIRST record I ever bought, I was 8 and paid . 23 cents. I played it till the wheels fell off... 1969...
Stone cold funk! The soundtrack of my youth in the South Bronx in 1969!
KILLER CLASSIC
I remember doing the dance the 'Popcorn' to this jam back in the day in St.Louis,Mo!
I could play this over and over again until I wear it out
Everything so tight here, so funky, love the sound of Jimmy Nolen's guitar most of all I think.
Maceo Parker lives around the corner from me ,my mom was a piano teacher and him and his friend used to come jam with my mom all the time ,God his friend was good his name was mad dog
A bottle of Thunderbird and a meal of pork chitlins black eyed peas and rice will get you listening to funky JB
IT'S 4:13 AM IN THE MORNING AND I'M JAMMIN TO JB AT WORK.
Still miss the king of soul . He is the greatest of all time.
So funky!
I was a 20 year old serving in the Air Force in Germany. We partied hard to this song in Cologne.
Man, I'm 18 now... Being at a party with this kind of music playing would be beyond epic
INSTEAD U GET KATY PERRY
James Brown the man
The Coatesie Show JB’s tracks is on my drinking party playlist. Gotta tell ya that is nothing more funky than Mr.Brown when you get drunk!
knightd12 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
4:21 -- coolest moment in pop music: "wait a minute," then crash
One of the bright spots for black folks even thru segregation and Jim crow...We had our own creativity and soul nobody can take away
amen 🙏
SAY THAT ONE MORE AGAIN!!!!✊🌶
James Brown transcends race
@@upster1967auhe didn't say he didn't and what you said doesn't make what he said any less truer. 🤷🏽♂️ ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
This used to be a dance back in the day when this song came out.......Great classic!
Yes, it was!! I danced to it BACK IN THE DAY!!
Yep! Sho was!
Also, there was a dance called the Four Corners. Anyone remember that😅
Good God those notes are so tight I couldn’t even fit a sheet of paper between them❗️wow❗️❗️❗️
This song establishes why r&b and rock and roll are more than what the lyrics are. James is on fire. The bass line is a continuum. James carries the beat. And "funk"is thusly defined. Problem is, you have to play this song LOUD.
This is the best weekend jam of all time
Before there was Watermelon....Lemonade....there was POPCORN....
JAMES BROWN is the best ENTERTAINER of all time..."THE PROFESSOR of FUNK"...Definitely changed the music industry with his LIVE PERFORMANCES!! ❤❤
IF THIS DOES'NT MAKE YOU MOVE, YOU DON'T HAVE A PULSE. THE HORNS ARE AS PERCUSSIVE AS THE DRUMS.
TRUTH!! Needed a mood changer and this did it ☺😊🎵🎤🎼
,, ,, " GOTTA, " 👂,👂, HEAR, THIS, !!, " L I V E, " !!, ( NOTHING, !!, ), LIKE, !!, I T, !!,
When the camera gets him from the waist up, you know his legs are moving to his signature ' James Brown '. What an artist !
THAT BASS!! THAT BASS!!
We ran this record into the ground when it came out. Every thing about it is badd ass.
No one on earth could scream like the late, great James Brown. Kudos to backup band the Flames, with Maceo Parker on sax, and the awesome horns section.
The Flames were the backup singers. The band was separate. It was the James Brown Band.
@@edsmall1902 The Flames broke up a year earlier; this group is the JBs.
@@kafenwar yes I realize that. But someone had made the comment that the Flames were the band. The Flames were backup singers.
@@edsmall1902 I hate to say it... the poor Flames didn't get much respect under paid. Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett and Baby Lloyd stalworth.
@@Clyde177I realize that.
Maceo never ever let his boss down...
sometimes I'm feeling low I call another brother MACEO
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥
Dude is forever on point.
That bass line is wicked!!! 🎸 🎸 🎶
I remember buying this single in 1969. Loved it then and now! One side was always part 1 of the song. Part 2 was the flip side.
the quarter note hi-hats and crazy ghost notes the drummer does and that horn section sets this on fire, what a groove and the lyrics make no sense yet no other lyrics would work! easily the funkiest thing he did, other than sex machine and pappa's got a brand new bag
JAMES was nothing nice... a beast he was
funkier than mind power?
Don't forget Funky Drummer and I Can't Stand Myself!
I've loved this track for sooooooooooo long! It even gets' us white boys grooving! (i'm 50!)
Bass player is killing it
Bootsy on bass
Do you understand the intensity and power that James puts behind EVERY "GOOD GAWD!!!" and "UHNNGH!!!"??!?!?!?!
James Brown's swell even had the intensity of a trumpet! RAW FUNKY!
No! Much as I have tried (and tried) over the years ... He was, truly, the hardest working man in show business.

I remember as a little kid they used to play this on WFIL, the white rock station in Philly!
Best ever. Hands fucking down, no questions asked.
