JB was THE MAN who thru his music, insight and pure business sense gave HOPE & PRIDE to the Black community across the US at a time when we needed it most. Bootsy Collins was one of his many protégés and understudies...playing the bass on most JB's greatest hits in the 70's era....the most creative & greatest explosion era in Black music (Soul, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Disco). All the great bands that spawned out of Dayton, OH area and across the US in the 70's were heavily influenced and inspired by the countless hits and nonsense genious of James Brown. When James Brown sang Please, Please, Please the producers didn't think there were not enough lyrics, but it was a hit because it had so much soul and feeling to the groove.
I know, this is the problem, some producers, think a song got have loads of bloody lyrics, sometimes it's not about saying so much, say little is better. As long as theirs a wicked hook, groove. Cool voice in bar and verse gets to the point of the song and ties in with the music. That's all u need. Some of the best hits, have little lyrics.

I remember reading the story behind this track. James had just signed for Polydor for what was at the time, a very large sum of money. Polydor wanted to recoup some of that cash as quickly as possible, so James was under pressure to get an album out pronto. Making a long, largely improvised vamp like this was simply a way of filling a large chunk of album in a short amount of time. It's obvious from the start that James was going to call it 'The Funky Train' but later changed it. The band appear to have basically had two hastily-prepared funky riffs they interchanged to make the music. The improvised banter is pure genious - to do that 'off the cuff' and make it so entertaining was very clever.
@Phil Silverman Well he says "...man, we got a thing called the Funky Train." I stand by what I said, I reckon that was going to be the original title.
@Phil Silverman He says "you've heard of Night Train (one of his old records), the Camel Walk - man, we've got a thing called The Funky Train. THE FUNKY TRAIN!" Can I count it off? 1,2,3..." Sounds pretty clear he's telling us that's what they are about to play. I'm not hearing the 'question', sorry
