It's a phone, so it still does something useful: make and receive phone calls. And like my Lumia 830, it has hands down a very intuitive and better than just a launcher user interface
This was my first phone ever. Back then, to just have a 4-inch screen in my pocket felt "big" to me. Amazing, considering my latest phone has a whopping 6.8 inch screen. I would say for it's time, the 520 had a pretty decent performance.
I still have a 930, it was my all time favourite phone but pretty much unusable now because next to nothing works but I love it and will never get rid of it, going to keep it and bust that sucker out when I'm 70 when I just need a phone for when my daughter calls :)
@@prasadch9796 I think windows 10, because I saw many videos that explain that phone with win 10 are still working well, except for the app no longer supported like WhatsApp
Good job Matt. My 925 is still working. Maps as well.. but yeah ie, is not good for most websites anymore.. just because of its age. Not sure what you did to your screen mate. Mine has been dropped heaps over the years, and no cracks.. Maybe the 520 was plastic body? The 925 was prior to that, but was all metal body. Dedicated camera button is great though, as you mentioned. Another thing that goes to the history books unfortunately.
I can still access Windows Store on my Nokia 1520. I upgraded it to mobile 10. Still my favorite phone ever but getting to the point where I might have to consider one of the other ones.
that its because Windows Store on WP 8.1 was shutdown back in 2019, doing same time Windows 8.0 store was also closed (while Store on Windows 8.1 [PC] is online but buggy).
Most of the Lumias on second-hand market have a broken ass screen or scratches all over the place. Come on people, care more about the Lumias, I collect em :p
I have a whole collection of them including the original 800 with WP7. But you can push the hardware to run Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 10 ARM with drivers on most Lumias. Yes, they use a normal BIOS (UEFI) so you can run full Windows as long as you extract the drivers off the phone. You also have to unlock the bootloader with this nice tool called WPinternals which is a GUI app. I recommend this but if WPinternals says you have Samsung eMMC you can brick the phone trying to unlock.
I have Lumia 1020 running on Windows 10 Mobile. First of all too bad you didn’t update it to Windows 10 Mobile when there was a possibility in 2015. Having Microsoft Edge browser on 10M is way better than IE on 8.1 that is so laggy. The store on 10M is still working just no more new apps are added. Second thing the keyboard here is fantastic, sometimes I think it’s better than on android. It has also SWYPE option so very cool unlike what was on 8.1. Yes, having 512mb ram is painful, on my 1020 I have 2GB so it’s totally different experience. Instagram is working normally via browser and YT up to 720p cause my screen is 720p here. So in my case it’s usable but not great. Mainly I left it for the 40mpix amazing camera. Your one.... I would throw out. Plus it’s damaged and not offering anything. This is the sad part of getting cheap phones, my little cousin had the 520 and it was horrible.
Windows support for Windows 8.1 and Windows phone 8.1 ceased to exist as of November 31, 2019. It means that if you have a lumia with applications and you uninstall or restart the computer, you will no longer be able to install it because the Windows store stops those teams will no longer be available
That was a crappy little phone you found for your video. But still you did a great job so kudos. My first touchscreen phone was a Lumia 925 on windows 8 which I initially hated but came to love after the upgrade to Windows 8.1. I finally stopped using a Lumia 950 in January 2020 when I switched to Android with regrets. Unfortunately Microsoft for the previous 2 years were deliberately running the os into the ground to get people to piss off. But before that, although there wasn't as many apps available as for Android or iOS, it was a beautiful os. And where I didn't have an app I just pinned dozens of web apps to the start screen instead. The keyboard was better than anything on Android. The camera's were fabulous. I had always on display. The search bar was at the bottom of the screen where every phone should have it. Cortana was so intuitive and responsive. I could have my messages read out to me and dictate my answer much easier than I can on my new android. There were no actual Google apps but there were third party apps that in many cases were even better. I had several RUclips apps that allowed unlimited downloading which I have discovered is only available on Android for an extra €10 per month premium. No wonder they hated windows. There were so many more things that were just better and innovative. Losing Windows Mobile was a lost opportunity at something unique and a clear third alternative. Currently I have Launcher 10 installed on my android and it gives me a real windows feel including the live tiles. I have the transparency for all the apps set to 100% for a completely Clear screen around the icons in each tile. Anybody feeling nostalgic for your old Windows home screen, I recommend you download it straight away. In the end, half of the apps even for W10 were gone or not supported so it was the end of the road when I relented and moved to Android. I still use the 950 occasionally for digital radio and Spotify, checking emails, sometimes to type out something on that wonderful keypad in landscape mode. Unfortunately Matt, even if you had a higher spec phone on Windows 10, it would still functionally only be a sad reflection of what it should have been in 2017.
it is very interesting to see young kids mind get blown, to discover something new... that happened while I was in my 40’s.
This MF phone is better than todays 200$ -300$ phones on the video quality and recording audio. Damn
