It's been over 15 years since Windows Vista was released to retail. So I tracked down an unopened copy to unbox and install! And along the way, we'll be talking about some of the reasons Vista received so much backlash when it launched, and why it still has such a negative perception today.

The Vista Aero UI was the most beautiful thing Microsoft ever could come up with IMO.
One of my former friends always kept pronouncing this "Aerio". Hahaha.
It really is even compared to windows 11, windows ever since windows 8 was so flat and boring, i genuinely wish i could go back to win 7
@@twinkelplayer498 It's such a shame that Aero was removed from Windows 8 at the last minute before RTM.
@@twinkelplayer498 I loved Windows 8.1's UI, but I agree. Vista is the most beautiful Windows EVER.
Well Apple has its Aqua like 7 years before Windows but late is better than never.
I did something like this and basically found Windows 7 to be Vista SP3. Windows Vista with SP2 and all the updates on good hardware, ran great, had the most beautiful windows UI of all time and had a ton of great built-in apps like macOS. Unfortunately they dropped most of them in Windows 7 and so in some ways I found Windows Vista to be better and continued to use it for years until I eventually switched to macOS and never looked back to windows.
Despite the hate, i decide to try the os for a few months. It has beautiful UI, and actually worked great for gaming. When it was released, this windows didnt work well with lots of low end PC, so people decide to abandon it. But after a few updates, it worked great.
Oh god, has it been 15 years already? Damn, time flies by fast.
Luckly I missed the whole "Vista is bad" moment and I enjoyed it fully when it came out.
To this day I consider Vista to be the best Windows released to date.
I mean technically speaking 7 was better, but Vista's UI was just the perfect thing.
It is sad to think Vista is one of the last versions to ship with a consistent UI. From Windows 8 onward windows has had a ton of consistency issues
@@hanro50 Windows Vista's Kernel is also easy to Patch!

In 2007 I built a PC from scratch for the first (and last) time and included Vista Ultimate. Now I'm a professional 3D artist so my pc specs were pretty high. I also bought a laptop layer that year that come with Vista, again with high end CPU, GPU, etc. So it was perfect for me.
I find Vista to be very underrated. Vista ran on the first computer I had as my own back in 2008, and it ran fine on the hardware I had. Only problem I ever had was a bug with DirectSound, which was fixed with SP2. Other than that, I never had any issues. It was stable and got the job done.
Headset Guy
This was the first time i used the HDMi audio true the Nvida card, or Nvidia Storm sound? They fixed that very good, i got the Dolby Digital 7.1 running without the service pack!
There was nothing wrong with Microsoft Windows Vista. I never had any issues with the software and was quite happy using Vista back when it came out in January 2007. I then upgraded my Vista system free of charge to Windows 8. 🙂
I remember as a kid I had ALWAYS wanted the Vista Ultimate version to upgrade the family Windows XP PC. I would always look at site's stores looking at the box & videos on seeing all of Vista's features. I also remember I modded that same family PC to instead make it look like Vista, before it caught a virus & we had to re-install XP. Seeing the unboxing is like fulfilling the want I had as a kid. Hearing about Vista's initial shortcomings is a bit bittersweet tho, I never really looked into why it had its reputation.
I've always loved Windows Vista, and never had an issue with it.
Thanks for paying respect to this awesome OS!
My family PC had Vista when I was a kid and I only remember good things about it. Very nostalgic over it tbh haha, no performance issues that I recall.
Well, this never gets old since 2007 that we still used Windows XP before Windows 7.
I remember when it was released. I had a cuatom built gaming pc, so the upgrade was flawless as I knew what I was doing and just did a fresh install. Had an nVidia card, so I had to use the beta drivers. It was to me, the biggest upgrade ever done since windows 95. One thing I do miss though and wish they'd bring back, is video wallpapers, dream something was called. But Vista was beautiful to look at from every aspect, and I always defended it and blamed dumb users for the negative feedback
Yeah windows 10 had dreamscenes but I believe that was locked only to the ultimate version of Windows Vista. If you want video wallpapers on a modern PC I recommend looking up the program Wall Paper Engine.

A year before the official Vista release, Nvidia was able to give a good DX 9 and DX 10 driver, we waited for the official release what we never got, but it was supported on beta anyway already!
Better x64 then Xp! Dx10
Windows Vista also introduced the WIM format, which completely changed (for the better) how Windows was deployed at scale. The WIM format is still superior to any other deployment technology I've used. And getting a Windows Server running Windows Deployment Server made the deployment process so painless while still able to accommodate all kinds of different hardware. I was really impressed with this tech - it would be really nice to see something like this in the FOSS world.
As a network admin and tech MDT and WDS are my bread and butter for Windows deployments
Vista is so beautiful, wish windows could look like that again

Somehow all the “Vista bad” went past me, maybe because I wasn’t so deep into the web as a kid. Anyway, Vista was my introduction into computers as a child, and apart from that old XP machine at the library (my grandmother was a librarian so I spent a lot of time there), mother’s Toshiba Satellite was my first computer (and she did eventually hand it down to me, I still have it working!)
Plenty of slow but fond memories with it
I've used Vista for years and never had any problems with it that I could remember. In fact, a few of my older machines STILL have it installed on them and I use them every now and then to play older games.
I genuinely liked Vista. I was young when we got the Home Premium upgrade and my PC was too slow for Aero, but I understood that. The overall experience was pleasant and when I heard it was "the worst OS yet" I was shocked. When I bought my first GPU with grass-cutting money, the ATI HD 5450, Aero blew me away. Good times.
I used to go to my sister's friend's house just to play around with their PC on Vista. Probably my favorite OS to date
HD 5450 is good for vista. Newer games, nah
@@PicelBoi Bruh, I was at Micro Center yesterday. They still make the HD 5450?!
@@AiRJacobs yeah pretty cheap, had one with my 2011 dell

I actually really liked Vista. It was preinstalled on my dad's really nice silver Acer laptop (I don't remember the exact model, but it was nice) and I believe it was actually kinda speedy for the time and Vista ran flawlessly on it, I loved it. I was really young but Purble Place was my jam 100%
Yeah. All of the computers at my college ran on Vista when I was there back in 2010-14. Never had any problems with them.
By the way, Windows ME was my favorite OS prior to WinXP. It had very nice UI and built-in USB support.
I dont understand why people hate Windows Millennium edition. It has features which could save files from being lost forever. The theme looked good (even when its so similiar to windows 95, 98 and 2000). I also really liked Vista. It didnt deserve the hate. The same goes for windows ME
@@ЗахарГончаренко-н8х From personal experience I remember it crashing a lot, but that might have been hardware related. I used Windows 2000 after that and it was a lot more stable.
@user-lt6it4gv2j I installed window's Me recently to try it. Did have a issue with drivers for a creative sound card but when I switched to on board sound on the old P4 motherboard it works ok. The issue is it often doesn't like windows 98 drivers.
I had Vista Home Premium. With a dozen registry changes, the extra features could be enabled without installing anything extra. As an added bonus, Vista also had the tools from the Server 2003 Powertoys pack under the hood. I could use telnet, ssh, ftp, robocopy, etc from the command prompt. When I got a windows 7 machine not having these tools felt like a massive downgrade
Also, MIcrosoft solitaire collection on Windows 10 is awesome. I downloaded the android version for my Samsung phone and find it nice to have my levels and progress through the collections synced between the two devices
I know Vista gets a lot of negative feedback, but I went from Windows 2000 to Vista and it was amazing. The sleek UI, the aero stuff, the neat visuals and all that. Just felt so futuristic and all that. I was finally using the latest tech.
Does anyone else like vista
Yes

Windows Vista was (at the time) my first modern version of windows on my first modern laptop (prior I was using 98se on my dad's old work laptop). Vista really got me into computer hardware as upgrading my Compaq Presario f700 from 1 to 2gb of ram made it so much more usable. I feel like if Vista never happened and Microsoft jumped straight from XP to 7, 7 would have the same reputation that Vista got, as by the time 7 rolled around, hardware manufactures and software developers were used to working with Vista, so the shift went a lot smoother
I remember getting a brand new laptop that came with Vista. And like you said so many times in the video from all the negativity I heard I was almost ready to just wipe it and put XP on it right away. But I gave it a chance and it was good for several years for me. Remember the one main thing that people were complaining about was the UAC prompts. Microsoft gave it super duper enhanced security. People were like "every single thing I click on I have to say yes to accept it". LoL
I love Vista even with all the hate that people had for it. It's one of my favorites. Once again I feel the reason for all the hate was that it was just ahead of its time. Great Video
I had this.. Vista rocked for me. I guess I just had the PERFECT hardware setup, but for me Vista was great!
I had a gamer class system in 2007 so I had no problems upgrading and running Vista. I don't give a rats ass what other people think, Windows Vista rocked! It's still the most beautiful version of windows ever put out! Buttons and all were glassed and glossed. It was visually stunning to look at. I hope at some point the Vista Glossy interface makes a comeback!
I was crazy about the Vista looks , i remember a 30mb pack for XP and the download speed was 23-28 kbps with 7 failed attemps between two complete days on my local cibercafe
Same. I remember playing with transformation packs in 2006 few months before vista was actually released. I broke several XP installs with that stuff but the aesthetic is just pure eye candy.
I was a Vista user. My first experience with Vista wasn't too positive when upgrading on my old Optiplex GX240 due to graphics drivers, but when I upgraded to an XPS 410 I eventually upgraded from XP Media Center Edition 2005 to Windows Vista Ultimate because I wanted to utilize 8gb of ram via 64bit, but also still have the ability to run Windows Media Center. (Which was huge at the time.) It ran very well on my XPS 410, which makes sense because Dell had a full set of Vista compatible drivers available. I really enjoyed it. It felt like a major upgrade at the time. Though short lived, as Windows 7 was released like a year after I upgraded to Vista and I moved to 7 on launch. Just because of the hype really. And I never looked back.
Also, Tinker! Microsoft Tinker was hands down my favorite game on Vista. I was so sad when it went away in Windows 8.
My first computer was shipped with Vista pre-installed, It was and continues to be gorgeous, the best Windows UI. Brings me back many memories of me trying to explore this world of computers for the first time.
I personally liked Windows Vista, since it introduced nearly everything that was great about Windows 7, and I also liked Windows 8 after the 8.1 update. I guess I'm just weird lol
my uncle bought one of this from the states for my brother in 2008, this was the coolest piece of technology i ever touch before iphone
Way back i had a Acer Aspire laptop with Vista, the laptop could've been a bit slow for it but i loved it. Never had any issues and it looked amazing.
My sister used Vista out from the box that was installed on her Toshiba Satellite notebook around 9 years, and it works good without any issues. Vista was never reinstalled and works good and fast. I think it's a good OS and not worst, just the hardware was not ready for Vista in 2006)
Back in the day, my dad got his hands on a vista ultimate dvd before it was released in our country somehow and assembled a brand new PC fully speced out to run it. That's why I dont remember any of the issues people talk about when they mention Vista. Frustratingly my dad really liked the new parental control features that made me unable to run any video games during time slots he had set up
Windows XP was also available in the Media Center Edition. It based on Windows XP Professional but it looked different.
I remember upgrading to vista back in 2008 and it ran very great on my computer at that time.. but then again.... my old computer I had back in 2008 was heavily upgraded and considered pretty high spec'd for the time.
I remember having windows Vista pre-installed on a HP Pavillion I brought back in 2008. I chucked a 8800GT in there, burnt out the power supply, replaced power supply and happilly played games like Halo 2 and World of Warcraft on it for years. I upgraded to WIndows 7 later on but I was happy with the computer even with Windows Vista. Don't really remember seeing much if any difference in performance when I upgraded. Did the upgrade more out of curiosity than dislike for Windows Vista. The only thing that got on my nerves with Windows Vista was the User Account Control. But considering, it could of been a lot worse!
I've watched a lot of videos on the history of Vista and I got to say, yours is the best by far
I remember my dad having the very first beta release of Windows 7 Pre- Millestone 1.
He did have XP for a few days before the very first beta release of Windows 7 would be released.
I find it funny that Vista is hated when back in the day during primary school my classmates and I just thought Vista seemed cool because the IT lab had all the computers with Vista installed and we didn't think much about anything wrong with it. I know I went to a private school but I doubt the computers in the IT lab were that powerful
I used to love this OS on my Acer Aspire laptop back in 2008.
In 2006, my parents bought me a laptop (Dell) which came with Vista. I didn't use it a lot since I had a personal computer, but a year and a half later I was in college and was using it constantly.
This is when I became familiar with the awfulness of Vista. Since I was in CS I got a free copy of Windows 7 and the immediate performance improvements gave me the same opinion of Vista everyone else had. I never experienced the updated (SP1 and beyond) Vista until 2015 when I made the mistake of upgrading my netbook (windows 7) to Windows 10, hated it even more than I did Vista or anything else, and installed and updated Vista from a spare disc.
At one point, I had a Windows Vista Home Premium notebook that my parents gave me. (I still have it; it's running 8.1.) My favorite games to play on it were Purble Place and Chess Titans.
In fact in 2008 my office dell laptop used Vista, and been using it for 2 years for my coding work and never faced with major issue except when one time I tried to run almost a hundred Yahoo Messenger instances for gag.
I had windows Vista on a desktop I got as a kid around 2007 or 2008. I loved it. Never understood the hate.
Windows 8 was far worse imo.
THANK YOU! I'm glad to see people honoring Windows Vista, my not only favorite OS but as well as my childhood OS (along with XP ofc)
Windows Vista was the first OS i used when i bought a Dell inspiron in 2007.
I used Vista on a computer that was compatible with the Aero theme, and it really felt like a Windows 7 beta. There were things that worked well and things that didn't work well, but finally upgrading from Vista to 7 was one of the best experiences ever because Windows 7 felt just like Vista, but with significant upgrades that made it just better to use.
Vista worked great on my family's old Compaq Presario, i don't know exactly what model it was, but it came pre installed with it and We switched back to XP for a very long time then I upgraded to Vista because of drivers incompatibility with XP
Also, if I recall there were features promised for Ultimate like downloadable content, etc., which were never delivered. That pissed off people who spent a lot of money to get the Ultimate version.
The Start Orb is the prettiest button MS has ever created!
I agree my parents got a HP with vista in late 2007 and we had no issues. At least for basic computer use. I never had bad thoughts about vista until we bought a dell Windows 7 computer and it was so smooth and fast. The specs weren’t too far off of each other either. That’s when I understood why people didn’t like it.
I find it interesting that the problem people had with upgrading from XP to 7 actually started earlier, with 2k to Vista. But it seems that XP to 7 was possible from an upgrade edition of 7 (by clean install of 7, then "upgrading" the fresh 7 installation after that, in order to get activation of the 7 upgrade license product key to work), unlike the 2k to Vista situation. Very strange that they carried something similar over.
I got into Vista after SP1, and the two PCs I had with it were a charm to use.
College classmates wouldn't stop pestering me to downgrade. One of these even tried to convince me with "just throw a Vista theme into XP!" Never gave in. Never regretted it.
I remember hating all the black in Vista. I think there was still a "classic view" available that I used? It was a long time ago and I usually try to turn all "features" off...
I remember my dad had a PC with Windows Vista on it he bought used that he daily drived for years. He continued to use it up until after the release of Windows 10, and that was because it crashed.
I remember we had 2 PC's with XP on them for the longest as well as family computers.
I still live Vista & 7 days in my mind. These years were my best years. Due to my admiration, I have searched Vista so many times that I, %99,9 agree about what he said in this video. In 2009 July, we bought a PC with Q8300 CPU, HD4650, 640GB HDD and it was working sooooo great! These colors, efects, GUI and that summer. Bring me back to that 2009 summer please!!! I could marry with someone who loves Vista right away! LOL
i used windows vista on an old laptop from my mother, and it went really well, even tough i first thought it wouldn't
A lot of computers in the early 2000s that were running Windows XP were not fully capable of running the Vista visuals, so that's why they offered the home Vista basic without the fancy visuals. Therefore, the Windows Vista would run more smoothly.
Never had any problems with it. I really like the tabs you could have on the right.

windows vista was my favorite OS i ever used spatially the UI , on my Opinion windows vista is lunched at wrong time if the average PCs isn't meeting at minimum requirement yet, until windows 7 lunched the low end cheep PCs is become at minimum requirement, and also the drivers will updated on time if Microsoft give the version of windows vista to manufactures to make drivers compatible with windows vista before lunched
I remember when they first got Windows Vista at our school I believe I was in second grade and to us I think it seemed like the moon landing. Our school had a crap ton of computer labs and the new vista lab had all LCD displays instead of CRT xp machines was just mind blowing to us
Windows vista itself wasn't horrible, in fact it introduced features that available even in windows 10. The main issue was most people were trying to install it on low end hardware such as a single core processor and 512MB ram which resulted in slow/undesirable performance. I remember getting a dell laptop in 2007 which came with vista but I 'downgraded' it to windows xp untill I upgraded the ram.
IIRC the main issue with Vista was it being shipped with PCs that weren't powerful enough to run the OS smoothly.
"evidently you do"
MJD calling me the fuck out over here 💀
Windows Vista is my favourite version of Windows. Would I use it today? Hell nah. But I do think it is a great OS, adding new features, including Windows Aero. Windows Vista was released at the wrong time when most computers weren't powerful enough. I actually run Vista on a 2007 Core 2 Duo iMac and it hasn't crashed once.
Can we go back to visuals like these? I really hate how minimalism is the norm among operating systems as if it's bashing you in the head not to get distracted. I want the wavy windows logo back
I never heard or saw anyone who had problems with Vista back in the day, bought a Toshiba laptop that came with Vista home edition...never had an issue at all. Im guessing the people who say it is terrible just had crap hardware to run it properly.
I loved Window's Vista it was so pretty and I love the Window customizations. The reason that some people didn't like it was because the software in Windows Vista was ahead of its time and most hardware at the time was not capable of running it properly. People were too stupid to understand this.
I still love Vista. I was not on windows 7 until the last service pack was released. It's funny how the installer hasn't really changed since then. Still appears to be the same even with windows 11. One of the things I liked most about Visita was the fact that it was my first taste of a dark theme. Before themes, were... you know, a thing. And Vista was Dark. It was awesome, new, and looked great.
I loved my copy of vista it was breth of fresh air after XP... tho it didn't run best on my early 2000's Fujitsu siemens desktop... I loved the looks of areo UI and widgets were amazing(CPU widget at 100% all the time was life :D )

Windows Vista Ultimate is my fav windows version; windows 2K pro is my second. XP bootloader issues - everyone forgot about those incidents. Windows 7 Ultimate was my first ever experience with ransom-ware (win7 got hijacked by the openCandy trojan). I ran Vista Ultimate 32bit on a eeePC with a single intel atom core with 2GB of ram and a cheapo 32GB embedded "ssd" and played the hell out of Texas Hold'em poker (Ultimate Extras btw).

Vista was my childhood! i am actualy a filipino and i am just a teenager so yea.
Coming from someone who couldn't afford a computer in the early 2000s, i had a 95 that was given to me in 2000, I messed around with it so much just for the Nak of knowing that I now had a desktop in my room, when every one had either w98 or w2000 I was happy with what I had, when xp came out and every one had had the newest version I finally had a w98, and still I thought I'll never have new computer like everyone else, after grad school and saved enough money to finally buy my own computer, it was 2008. For someone that had been using previous versions of W, and owning a Vista laptop, I thought it was great, obviously a few years later I upgraded to the so called better than Vista, W7, i figured well, it's obvious that is better, they had to upgrade and fix a few things from Vista, so it was expected. Tell of the tape is, never did I thought i had a bad version of windows
My issue with vista wasnt on my own system. It was OEM systems with Vista preinstalled and not meeting min specs. Not even the "upgrade path" you talked about. Actually coming with an OS it could barely run was insane.
Again, that was an OEM issue, not so much a vista one.
I used to game on a vista system so all the aero stuff got turned off to free up some memory, so never got the pretty things myself.
Grew up on Vista, love it
Interesting video and comments about the history. I’ve purchased and used Windows 3.0, 3.11, NT3.51, 95, 98, NT4, 2000, ME, XP -Home, Media & Professional, Vista-Basic, Premium & Ultimate, 7 Home, 10 - Home & Professional and I think your comments about perception are accurate. One issue with Vista is that it changed how a few things operated and that prompted grief and grumble. Additionally, XP was pretty and an impressive leap from 98. Just recently I got a bug 🐞 up my b**t to buy a new motherboard, CPU, etc and install Vista, 7 and 10. I didn’t realize Microsoft had taken the update servers off line 😢 Woops , I purchased 8 also, at a discount from Microsoft
Vista UI just unbelievably Awesome. No windows version could top the vista ui
MJD says"But it was nice to see how they really aerofied" [I laugh]
The OS itself wasn't very good (but I didn't have any problems with it myself), but the interface and design for Vista was beautiful.
In 2005, 2006 machines with Vista were horrible, including my (actually expensive) Pentium 4 desktop. I got a Mac in 2007 and I absolutely loved it. Nowadays I use windows everyday normally, but that era was really bad for PCs, I still have nightmares about those machines.
I actually have Windows Vista, but I have a business edition of windows vista for HP computers
Windows Vista ended up being ok after service pack 2, but by then Microsoft was just months away from releasing windows 7 and all the buzz was around windows 7. The main problem with vista was it was a big departure from previous windows in terms of hardware requirements. The jump between windows vista and windows xps in hardware requirements was huge at the time and a lot of people simply fell short of windows vista hardware requirements to run vista properly. That, and the intial software and hardware driver support from many 3rd party vendors were crap.
I never understood the hate for vista, I used it for years and it was awesome, it had bug but the ui was beautiful and the problems were minor for me at least
My dad brought this exact copy home one day and never touched it. I installed it and fell in love with it! then I got windows 7...
EDIT: Mine was actually a full install disc, not just an upgrade.
21:55 Thank god, solitaire didn't bluescreen the computer. Btw, I love Windows Vista
The reason Solitaire didn't bsod is because that only happened in a joel livestream
I absolutely love(d) Vista. The "wow" campaign was honestly spot on; when child me first saw Vista boot to the desktop, my first word literally was "wow". That's without any of the ads injecting it into my mind.
If Vista had some more of 7's features, I'd still use it to this day.
But I'll just stick to 7 with Vista's Aero theme (when I'm not just using Linux).
10 and 11 can go rot in a pit.
I had Windows Vista on my notebook (also 1st PC i have ever used) and I liked it.
I also like Windows 8.1 (not 8)
5:55 wow beautiful
Even tho I might be 11 years old I still love old technology and absolutely love and think windows vista is the best os in history: I am not a bot
I'm 5 days older than Vista but XP was my first OS
I also never had any issues with Vista, my BF bought it from launch and we never experienced any of the problems that were complained about.

Visually yes; technically no. That’s why the completed OS (a.k.a Windows 7) was released… Maybe they released this because they were running low on development capital (?) I felt ripped off and didn’t pay for another Windows OS upgrade after that-including my Windows 7. Vista turned me into a pirate 🏴☠️
@@sidneyblondell It also was technically impressive, depends on who looks at it
@@sidneyblondell Vista was very good, but it computers of the era just weren't generally speaking up-to-date to use it. Vista after SP2 is essentially W7. It had bugs, but after SP1 and especially after SP2 it was really solid. W7 was simply because Vista got so tainted name at it's launch.
I remember my brother and I saving up cash to buy a desktop with Vista OS. Finally, in March 2007 - only a couple of months after the release of Vista - we had a combined $900 dollars which allowed us to buy a Gateway GT5404 model from Best Buy 15 years later, I still have the GT5404 (Just for Nostalgia, not my main pc of course) and it works perfectly :)
looks better than Windows 10 and even Windows 11 imo
