Either you fell asleep outside listening to that book, you forgot you were moving studios and didnt pay the light bill, or....nope only those two options.
LineageOS has a dark mode. And SquareHome 2 is a really good Metro UI style launcher. On top of that you get Android. I don't think I'll miss Windows phone.
I had a Lumia for 3 Years. God I loved that OS. The design was so cool on windows phone. Home Screen, the fonts, dark mode was so gorgeous. Only thing to hate was the store.
@@debbieharry387 cause no apps. I had a Lumia 800 and you couldn’t download Netflix, Hulu or anything but you could play a shitty version of Splinter Cell Conviction. No apps that anyone actually wanted or needed and just full of useless crap no one was ever downloading.
The main problem that made me switch to iPhone was the lack of apps. I had no problem with the OS. And as a developer it was a bliss. Building apps that worked on all Windows versions. I still hope that they can revive the OS again some day.
@@battlebuddy4517 with Microsoft switching some of their softwares to Google's softwares like edge chromium and Surface Duo that runs android, I feel like Microsoft will ditch UWP apps and replace them with Play Store and android apps. Win32 will be untouched. Like a chromebook but with support for Win32 apps.
@@sriramsundar8388 lol I can guarantee you Microsoft would never submit to the play store. It’s pretty clear that their end goal is to have one OS for all device types, apps that run on phones, tablets, laptops, desktops. Windows mobile flopped but it wasn’t a true unified experience anyway. It’ll come back.
Apple and Android fans may not like to admit it, but the Windows phone UI was, and still is, the best phone UI ever created. It still had faults, but if MS had managed the app-store 'wasteland' issue better I'd still be using mine today, instead of having had to swap to other phones for the apps. My Lumia 1020 was the only mobile phone I've never wanted to upgrade from after a year or so of use, which to me says it all.
the "wasteland" situation is reflected by user adoption, it was a wasteland because so few adopted it, because developers will see a platform as "worthy" if there's potential for profit.
The thing I missed most about Windows Phone was the keyboard and the amazing autocorrect. Never found one like it since. *I've used SwiftKey for years and it's not as good *
Yeah the windows keyboard had really good swipe functionality and could usually figure out the word I wanted based on the context of the sentence. Nothing quite like it. Stupid Android keyboard type non-words so that a sentence like “Hello how are you today?” will turn into “ Hello Havarti yipi toads?”
Does anyone remember Cortana that was amazing before Siri and Assistant and even worked offline? Windows Mobile/Phone was the best OS, if only Microsoft would have supported it more
One of the biggest issues was that Google didn't release official apps, also they took legal actions against developers who offered Google services though 3rd party apps. Other services like Snapchat also never offered an official version of it, but the impact was not so big. This discouraged many developers.
+HabiOS -- Google does all that to kill ANY windows-phone support, yet the justice dept went after MS for including with the OS a free web-browser so users could download Firefox.
My Lumia 950 XL is still going strong. The only app I miss not having an update for is Waze. I think Microsoft pulled the plug too soon. It still would win out for those that want productivity from their phone instead of social media. I watched this video and posted this from my phone. I'll be keeping it until the wheels fall off.
I had a Lumia 950 forever! I miss it so much. I ended up moving into a Razer Phone because I had broken the 950 past the point of fixing it on accident. I love my Razer Phone but it still doesn't have many features of the 950 that were there years ago!
Agreed! I always said Windows Phone is great for people who value productivity. Very organized. Speech to text and "swype" is also waaay better and uses context clues. I miss it and the ability to sync between PC. Very professional phone. I also loved when they were paired up with Nokia because the camera quality was AMAZING. Even on my 521 with no flash in low lights. I sacrificed no front facing camera on that phone because I loved the OS and user interface so much lol. Not to mention the smart battery life. Good times, good times. Even though WP didn't have all of the popular apps the redeeming quality is the few apps they did have were vetted and secure. Microsoft why didn't you try harder instead of being toe in at poolside? You can't accomplish much without immersion as with anything in life.
Still using Windows phone in 2021, started using windows phones in 2008. It has everything I need. My wife and I both use our HP Elite x3 daily with no problems.
Speaking of performance. The OS looked great and ran great on low end smartphones. My moms phone has a Snapdragon 400 and 1gb of RAM, and Windows runs flawless and smoth. Out of the three main OS systems, WP looks the best. Android has tons of widgets but not all of them fit together, because they all have different designs. In Windows everything fits together and looks good.
I don't think that you can run the latest Android on a single core. My old Phone has a single core Snapdragon S2 @1ghz with 500mb RAM running Android4.1 which came out in the same year as Win8. It does basic stuff like Whatsapp, but when it comes to video streaming or games, the apps are force closing themself, and even the home screen takes some time to load. I think it would be even worse with newer versions of Android.
A. G. Try looking for Microsoft Launcher in the Google Play Store it is a Windows OS on a Android Phone. Also it can send anything from your Android Phone to your Computer / Laptop that has Windows if you have a Windows account with one push of a button.
Unfortunately, it had very limited hardware support compared to Android. While Android supported a bunch of different ARM SoCs, Windows Phone/Mobile only ran on one.
Silvio Britto Try looking for Microsoft Launcher in the Google Play Store it is as close to a Windows OS on a Android Phone. Also it can send anything from your Android Phone to your Computer / Laptop that has Windows if you have a Windows account with one push of a button.
950 here. Still don't get all the comments on apps. If you compare how for instance RUclips works on my Lumia950 in the browsers with iOs or Android app version... you really don't want to use an app again. So indeed, there is no app for RUclips, but I don't care. And this counts for a whole lot of other 'apps'.
Sometimes ppl make fun of me by using a Windows Phone, I use it for about 2 years and the screen is very durable. I love it, wouldn't trade it for anything. It doesn't have many apps that Android has but I love it even more for that, the store is clean and receives lots of updates, the apps sometimes crash randomly but a restart will solve it. Windows Phone has all my love
@Neckslit Same reason I stopped using mine. It totally died. \: I would have gotten a newer model but when I found out they dropped Nokia I had to move on. Nokia was the best part for the reliable camera! Poor move. And I heard the new versions with Microsoft only were questionable. Le sigh. Why did they have to tamper lol And then right after that they went out of production... Me: Well that escalated quickly.
David Ross they just needed any type of marketing like you said also if they could have gotten their apps fixed they really could have stayed in the game.
®ioT there were even rumours of a surface phone for a while, and I had high hopes for the brand name making it successful. There was a time when I was seriously considering the windows phone, but the lack of apps kept putting me off, like many others, I suppose. Then as the market share decreased I didn’t want to invest into a dead product line. The lesson I suppose is that windows should have marketed it hard from the beginning, and worked hard at attracting developers earlier.
makasete30 I believe it can succeed. Microsoft just wasn't sure if their phones would succeed in a marketplace where Android is king with maximum number of phones from third world market exclusive sub $150 phones to $800 flagships. But with privacy concerns and Google's blatant data collection practices getting more awareness, I believe the time is ripe for a relaunch in the future following the surface lineups design language. Plus, there was a time, from 2010(the launch of the iPad) to 2015 where PC sales plummeted and tech pundits raved about how tablets would kill the PC for good. But this trend has reversed and tablets have become obsolete, except for the iPad which is still not a volume seller. MS phone can bounce back as there's no way Google can ever replace Windows as the primary commercial software supplier. The Chrome OS experiment proved that. Plus, an Apple-Google duopoly isn't healthy either. More the competitors, better products anf services for the end consumer.
Windows phone can do good in the sub $350 range where many people want a alternative to Android. Android is very slow & buggy and phones start to hang in just 1-1.5 years, whereas even low end Windows phones are working as good as new even after 3-4 years
ME TOO! I used it for 2 years. To this day, its still the best smartphone experience ive ever had. The operating system makes Android and iOS look like lazy garbage by comparison. Unfortunately, the smart kid usually isnt the popular kid.
I had my 1520 for about 2 years and it was my favorite phone of all time. I was so sad I had to stop using it :(( but I really just needed better app support and moved to iOS
Windows mobile has never been dead, Microsoft killed it for strange reasons. it was making money more than Bing now, but Microsoft still keeps Bing. in some countries like italy, it had more market cap than iOS. weird.
Satya Nadella wants to clean house and get rid of Steve Ballmer's men and since Windows Phone was Steve Ballmer's project, Satya Nadella killed it. Windows would have 20-25% market now if it wasn't killed
No, keeping up an unprofitable OS and also making first party hardware for it is expensive and MS were tanking losses from WP. Bing actually makes a profit and is essential for data collection and the cloud. If MS didn't pull the plug on WP as soon as they did, their stock would not be as high as they are today (nearing 1trill market cap). MS killed WP because of business reasons. Why WP failed is another complex issue with its own causes.
Andrea Riccardi No it wouldn't have. Market share doesn't tell the complete story. You could have a big share yet still have low profits or no profits at all. e.g. RUclips/Android.
One thing that I loved that no one seems to mention is the integration with Cortana. I'm on android now and I never use the assistant. But with the dedicated Cortana button I used it all the time. It's so fast because it's integrated with all the native apps and OS. Google assistant is good but honestly Cortana was ahead of it's time.
WP has the best keyboard I have ever tried. Too bad WP didn’t went off. I loved my Lumia 720. It’s the best OS I have tried if it weren’t for the lack of apps
I know this comment is old. But I loved my lumia 720, too! In fact I went ahead and bought two, one for me, one for my gf (now my wife) when it launched
Old comment, but for future reference to those switching over from Win Phone to Android, go online and download Microsoft's HUB KEYBOARD for Android. It was delisted from playstore, but can still be downloaded. It was their attempt to port the windows phone keyboard to Android and works great. I still use it. It's exactly the same as the windows keyboard. It was developed by Microsoft garage.
Man, Windows Phone was the best. I remember when I started with the 520, then I got the 1020 and my last Windows Phone was the Icon :( I'm so torn apart by Windows Phone's Dead. I hope it makes a comeback.
Jeez i miss windows phone, the sleek metro/modern ui the unstuttery feel of it. The sleek animation, the personalization. Everything, then they killed it. Tbh i would still use windows phone if its app selection wasnt all that bad.
Had Microsoft pushed early on for app development and marketing, things would be much different today. I used the Nokia 830 for 2015-2017 and I have the same feelings about it as you. The features are there, but the apps aren't. The thing I love most about the Windows Phone keyboard is the little nub for moving left, right, up, or down, rather than tapping on where you want the cursor to be.
TheRealMikeShea people just didn't give it a chance. All people cared about was Facebook and Instagram. They could careless about the fluidity and functionality of phones back then. I've tried Blackberry OS, Android, and Windows. For me Blackberry and Windows had all the features that iOS and Android still don't have or just now implamenting.
Funny, Android never had the apps that Apple’s IOS did--at least, not for the first several years. Yet that didn’t stop it becoming hugely popular. So shortage of apps is no excuse for Microsoft’s failure in mobile.
We're not just talking total app quantity, we're talking common apps. RUclips, Snapchat, Instagram for a while, Any other google services like Gmail or Maps, other apps like that didn't exist on Windows. For someone who would think of switching over, hearing that they can't even use every day apps is probably a deal breaker.
Rahul Baidya you could also download videos directly to the phone, since microsoft designed the youtube app themselves and not google, which google responded by forcing them to remove the feature entirely, I miss windows phone :(
I miss so much my windows phone and windows mobile... Even my phone now is android with a good specs and can use more because many apps avalaible... But the beauty with the simple UI and the smooth of windows phone n windows mobile can't replaced in my mind n my heart.
The one thing I now really miss is the consistency. From update to update, things worked the same way they always did. Android on the other hand fucks with things without a care in the world (Battery saver and ambient display between Android 8 and 9 come to mind). Also, when I used my Win10 Phone as a WiFi hotspot I really took it for granted that I could see the IP and MAC of everything connected to it Oh Well. Time moves on and I have to come to terms with the fact I backed the Betamax of Phone OSes for 4 years of my life.
Same here ;). I am still using my L950XL and it still is a great phone and does all I want it to do. (and of cause I like Continuum as you may notice from my channel ;) )
Windows Phone had another HUGE plus you didn't even mention: even the worst and cheapest Windows Phone device was fast and smooth for basic tasks in an era when cheap Android phones were constantly lagging and having problems. The OS was just superior in optimization (but this was partly due to the fact that there were few manufacturers who made Windows Phone devices) without costing an arm and a leg like an iPhone would in certain markets. That was the main reason why I bought a Lumia 610 back in 2011, and even without the notification bar (there wasn't any until WP8), a Marketplace that had almost no interesting apps, I'm really glad I got to experience that OS back then and I still miss features like the keyboard, the People hub, the tiles and the music player (Zune Pass was terrible, but the program itself and the app sync were awesome).
Bullshit. My 200$ Lumia is lagging as fuck, constantly closing apps, compared to my 100$ android. Windows phone is awful. It has absolutely no apps, no customisation, they even removed a fucking radio. And whats worst, is that windows mobile 8 supports and has way more apps than windows 10, on which developers refused to create apps, because of how awful the os is.
Banana Slug He is not talking about now. About 4-5 years ago you couldn't find a decent low-budget android phone, while Windows Phones were cheap and smooth as fuck.
"even the worst and cheapest Windows Phone device was fast and smooth for basic tasks in an era when cheap Android phones were constantly lagging and having problems" No it wasn't. The W10 OS was absolute dog shit. I got a Lumia 650 a month after its launch and had dealt with hell on earth to get that stupid POS even working. I had to switch back to my Moto E (very similarly spec'd) and had a much better experience with that since the fucking thing could at least run flappy bird clones without stuttering. The whole "W10 was the best on cheap hardware" shit was a fucking lie made up by dumb MS fangirls.
Honestly, as much as I disliked the apps on the Windows Phone, it wasn't a bad phone AT ALL. My best friend had one and he had no complaints, and especially after you could install android apps on there, it was pretty gud
Agreed, but in all honesty, it's not suxh a bad thing to be missing a few apps. Yes a RUclips app would be nice, as well as sound cloud, but when it comes to battery life? I could get up to 3 days out of a 650 because it wasn't always giving me push notifications.
this wouldnt have happened as google was so arrogant towards microsoft .........microsoft had to remove the youtube app from the store due to google............that youtube app was exceptional, better than google can ever build
Awesome video. I too just pulled out and reset my old HTC One M8 for Windows and yeah holy crap I missed it. The WP UI is incredible. If only Microsoft pushed the Android app bridge a little harder and held out a little longer. The day Microsoft announced it would start focusing on business customers and wouldn't make more flagships is the day WP died. Not even a week after that third party devs stopped supporting it and consumers like myself ditched it completely. And to think there was a time when Windows Phone was nearing 4% market share. Thanks for mentioning the bit about UI elements near the bottom on WP. This was the hardest part when I switched to Android. Who in their right mind programs browser search bars at the top of a big ass screen?!?! All the browsers I found for Android do this except for one that is not updated anymore so I use an out of date browser now lol. Just put them at the bottom like WP did.
John Maksym I don't know what kind of magic Lumia 950 you got, but mine has a terrible battery life, after a while (2 yrs) it got so bad that I had to buy a new one (edit: new battery ofc) and even with that one the battery life isn't closely as good as it should be considering it's 3000mAh
Was using a windows phone till early January . I also loved the keyboard. So now my go to keyboard is the gboard as it is the closest to the Microsoft keyboard. Absolutely loved typing on it.
There are some keyboard options from MS available in the Play Store. I use one of their app called- Hub Keyboard, and I find it closest to the native keypad experience on WP. Do try it out :)
I am actually watching this on a Lumia 640XL right now. This is my backup phone and I'm waiting for my new phone to get in the mail. There are things that I love about Win10 Mobile, but a lot of things I hate too! Great vid, Bud!
Tony Clay Since it is your backup phone, do you know is there way to move your Whatsapp chat history from Windows phone to Android without losing anything? Last I remember the regular backup feature on Whatsapp didn't work that way.
I completely missed my windows phone. The issue here was that even though Microsoft highly optimized their own UI for their apps which allowed for the amazing user experience, they also pretty much required third party apps do the same. Not only that, but since Universal Windows Apps was not mainstream (most people were still running windows 7), a lot of developers just didn't jump onboard. I hope Microsoft finds a way to re-release the windows 10 UI, either as a custom build of Android (similar to how Samsung modifies the code) or with the long awaited surface phone.
Don't forget the API resets from WP7 to WP8 to WP10. Burning developers three times in a row isn't exactly trying to show trust in a platform. Ultimately Microsoft screwed up on that. While UWP may not have succeeded as Microsoft would've hoped, they are still continuing to make improvements with each feature update to become close in feature parity as Win32. Little by little many of Windows 10's components are being replaced with UWP. Time will tell if they will continue to commit to UWP and PWA (the only savior to the app gap issue).
WindowsPhone was the best innovation of century. It made me go from Symbian NOKIA to SmartPhone LUMIA. Yes, that is it, I said. Tiles, dark mode, performance of the cheapest device, usefullness and some great aps they were made at the time. But time went by, apps started to dissappear, no now was there, writing one was costly, NOKIA was sold, new devices never had the same mechanical quality, software stayed behind, and Microsoft went on that "Windows 10" nonsense on the phone which is utterly messed up, unconsistent, broken, and lacking features it was present in 8.1 - the only two things I appreciate on W10m is: EDGE and nicer home screen. Everything else is more cumbersome and lacking. I use daily WP8.1 and W10m and 10 is just for browsing,... for everything else WP8.1 is better. Hasta la vista WindowsPhone.
When I broke my phone a few years ago, I borrowed a friends old LG windows phone. It was thick and had a slide keyboard. I really miss it, even now. The OS was great and smooth. It was surprisingly fast even now even though it was a phone from 2010-2012 and it was incredibly nice to use. Bring back windows phone!
If I remember correctly you could once install Android apps on a dev build of Windows 10 Mobile. If Microsoft kept that feature Windows 10 Mobile maybe would've survived...
You pretty much summed up all the things I miss about Windows Phone. But I think you forgot two important aspects. 1. Updates: No matter your manufacturer or your hardware, you got all security updates for your currently installed OS version directly from Microsoft until support end. Pretty much like on a windows desktop OS. 2. Performance on low end devices: I remember using the Nokia 735 which had just 1 GB of RAM, but the system felt very responsive and fast. The same specs felt very slow and unresponsive on any android device, even at the time these specs where considered mid or even low-end on Android. Android one wasn't even a thing back then.
Yeah well then he is a very quick editor and straight forward person. I can't imagine this video really taking very long to do. Maybe an hour at the most with editing and videoing. There really isn't much to mess up about this.
I wish editing was that short. Took a bit longer. Just had to get some extra b-roll after I had my edit draft completed to fill in some space where I was on screen too long.
One thing I respect about Windows Phone OS is that it has a pretty consistent UI going on throughout it. I can't say the same about Android or iOS. In iOS, look at the App Store home page, it literally looks like a basic HTML page with a bunch of tags. Android, don't even get me started, with so many manufacturers, the standards and guidelines Google may want developers to stick to are pretty difficult to enforce.
Take it for what you will, I believe the core Windows Phone OS has both the best UI and UX out there. The issue is just when you factor in the app support, or lack, thereof. Windows Phone always had potential, but Microsoft never effectively took advantage of that potential. It’s dead now, but I still personally think it’s a better OS than the other big players out there.
If only it were that simple. Their new push with Android+Windows integration is very encouraging though, and that has actually been part of why I’ve been using macOS and iOS as my primary platform; the integration between mobile and desktop has been phenomenal, and if Microsoft and Google can replicate that, then that would be excellent. As it is, Windows is a practical desktop OS, and Android is a practical mobile OS, so having them cooperate is huge. Those are the world’s two largest platforms! It might even push me far enough to get a new Android device as my primary next year instead of an iPhone for the first time in ages, if they do it right.
The main reason for the death of Windows Phone was the app ecosystem. Such a shame really. I was even close to buying one at one point because the Metro UI actually WORKS on a smartphone. Not the biggest fan of Windows on the desktop, only using it because I'm forced to, but I really lived Windows Phone.
I don't actually use apps so I am mostly ok with my windows 10 phone from a few years ago. I would like if apps got any support, but the web and contacts work well. I wouldn't recommend just because there is no support for the phone. It's just kinda sad to see such good hardware withpoor software
Lumias: Best phones I've ever had. I've had a 610, 625, 630, 435, 830, and a 950XL. Still using the last one, and man, I love them! The UI is fantastic, and all of them are so fast, snappy and classy. The UI, with Dark Mode and accent colors. The hardware camera shutter button, the snappiness on lower end hardware, the fantastic cameras, and everything in between, I love 'em
Man, I had one of the Lumia's I think the first model to have wireless charging, and I LOVED that thing! One of my favorite features was how many of the main apps that came with the phone had so much functionality and were packed with features, especially my favorite, the contacts app! Like you said, I SORELY miss to this day the ability to connect all of my contacts various social media accounts to my contacts app and just see all of their updates through one app, I was so disappointed when I eventually upgraded to the Iphone 5 and found that feature was basically exclusive to the windows phone D:. In the end, the only reason I switched was for exactly the reason you said at the end of your video, It just had no third party apps... but man I really liked the simpleness of that OS and would love to have the same thing just with third party app support and a 4k OLED display...
People might disagree but to me Windows Phone 8 (MAYBE 8.1) was the best of all 3 (7, 8 and 10). It had vast improvements from 7, still a long way to go but it didn't change much or the concept. Windows 10 kind of fucked up everything in the attempt to get into that ecosystem with PC's, tablets, Surface, etc. My mom had a Lumia 640 XL and after one of the latest updates, her Radio FM feature was GONE. Like... the phone had radio feature, but she was forced to use an online radio or paid service. I know it might sound silly but it's very stupid. That and even if people say "lack of apps" which is true, the ones that were there weren't incredibly well implemented. Like back then, Messenger on Android already had bubbles. On Windows Phone not only did NOT have bubbles, but also every time you would multitask, it would have to load again. All the time. I loved Windows Phone, but it wasn't great natively either. If you want to get into this market today your product has to either A) kill it on the concept/idea or B) be almost flawless. Look at OnePlus. The 1+1 might not have been the greatest or most perfect phone, but at the time, the concept of "more for less" got nailed. And that is why we have OnePlus today still doing their thing (although stepping away from that concept).
They got rid of the inbuild app but there are third party apps which still can do UKW radio (for instance "Radio FM Phone"). You just have to download one of those from the microsoft store now... yes I do not get why they killed that app neighter, but it is not like they killed the whole feature or something...
@-T-X-M- In my opinion, version 8.1 had some big visual downgrades. Zune/XBox Music was a lot prettier than Groove Music. The Marketplace used to have a changing background image whereas the Store had nothing but an empty background. The old Games hub was looked better than XBox Games hub. Skydrive went from live tiles to static icons. Large header bar titles with clipping texts were phased out in many places, etc.
True! Amazing how many people have never heard of Windows Phone. Also a lot of tv series use Windows Phone as product placement. After seeing that a lot of people still ask what kind of phone they were using. If only MS would have put a bit more effort in Marketing, things might have gone differently. But a lot of mistakes were made :-(
oh my word everything you said about what was great on the windows phone is exactly what I loved about windows phones! I used a windows phone until the very end and loved it! I liked the dark mode, I loved the home screen it was so simple and everything was right there right where you needed it and you could arrange it anyway you wanted and personalize it. You could pin your frequently used contacts right to the home screen. The control center was perfect easy to use and self explanatory unlike the IOS ugh I use and iPhone now and that control center is a pain in my butt! There was just so much about the windows phone that was awesome. I wish other phone companies would implement some of the popular features of the windows phones to their platforms. We can always hope!!
Ballmer and Sonofsky need to be boiled in oil for what they did to Microsoft. Ballmer for his complete and utter lack of vision and general incompetence and Sonofsky for corporate political gaming Windows and ultimately causing the division's death. What was really great about the platform was not only the Windows mobile OS/UI but also the way that it integrated into the desktop. You would make an update on your phone and it would appear virtually instantly on anything that had your name on it. It was secure, quick and beautifully designed with a real design statement. I don't care if you hated it. I loved it and at least it stood for something instead of the clone wars of mediocrity we live with now.
Yeah... I miss when browsers put their address bar on the bottom. As an ex-Windows user, I love the details that Android hasn't event had it by now. Like that half notification centre, which need small gesture. Browser's address bar on the bottom screen. Believe it or not, I love the gesture, lots of swipe action instead of tap. But once again, it is dead, no essential apps for my lifestyle
Lot of good stuff from windows mobile: - Glance screen - Double tap to wake - Tap on the navigation bar to turn off the screen - Bottom navigation bar - Live tiles were really simple an elegant... way better than widgets - Background media upload (Whatsapp, Instagram, etc...)
Im currently on my old Lumia 1020 as a backup phone because my HTC M8 died two days ago. I love it. I wish it had continued to improve and that they were still active, I loved the system and the logic and how I could use it as an extention of my laptop. Now many things are offline but I'll always love it.
Man... My first smartphone was a Lumia 610! It was... great for it's time. Simply. And sooooooo intuitive! I remember when I first switched to Android and was like "WTF is this?!" First thing I did was I somehow accidentally called 112 (something like 911 in the US, but in the EU)... Yeah... I still have my Lumia next to my bed 😂
i'm still using my Lumia 950xl and it's an awesome pone... pd: the Audible app is still avaidable in the Microsoft store for Windows phone (or Windows 10 mobile)
The first 40 seconds had me subbed and smashing that like button! Very mature and entertaining! Every does the "so stupid and useless" game and this was refreshing!
I know I came across this video late but here's the thing. Windows 10 mobile is not dead. I wouldn't trade my 950XL for any mobile phone on the market today. Here's the thing people don't realize. Windows doesn't need apps. It uses WEBSITES, plain and simple. I despise IOS and Android. I will not stop using my Windows Phone until it stops working and if possible, I will buy another. I'm not going to pay $1000 for a cellphone. That is ridiculous. My 950XL is beautiful, functional and does what I need. Forget Android and iPhone. This is where it's at.
I purchased a non-XL Lumia 950 back in 2016 and, despite the lack of third-party apps, MAN did I love that thing. I loved how customizable the live tiles were and I had a really satisfying setup that I'm still kind of proud of lol. I ultimately switched to Android due to the lack of third-party apps and sold my 950 to fund a Moto G5 Plus, but I'll always fondly remember my time with Windows Mobile.
As a fan and an owner of windows phone, I always imagine what would this smart cellphone war look like if Microsoft jump in a few years earlier than the WP launched originally.

It really is a bummer that Windows just couldnt get their OS off the ground. Im sure if it had, windows 10 would have alot of amazing features, maybe even rival mac/iOS's integration
Decided to watch this video for fun since my first smartphone was a Lumia 520 and I have fond memories of it.Saw the dunkey vid recommendation on your phone and I subscribed
Another Windows Phone keyboard innovation I really loved was the ThinkPad-like scroll button on the keyboard, which allowed for easy and precise cursor selection, but what was great was the function you could 'compress' buttons of the keyboard more to the side of the phone so you could reach everything without straining your thumb.
Dude you captured what makes this phone amazing. It breaks my heart when I had to leave my HP Elite X3, but others like me and myself we'll be back when Project Andromeda drops in the future :3 SUBSCRIBED!
Came here from your Kin video. Like I said there, I bought the Windows Phone (7) during it's first year, and absolutely Loved it! Used my Lumia all the way into 2016. Yes, the app market was abysmal, but it did exactly what I needed it to do, it was a snappy and lovely OS, and great cameras. The only reason I switched to Android was, Pokémon GO, of all things. And, even I could see the phone dying a slow and painful death. :(
Stick around 'till the end of the video for a editing fail surprise! 😂
Pretty good one
Nice tan, Quinn.
Thanks dude. 😆
Seems you’ve left the camera lens too much in the sun and it cooked the filter of the lens
Either you fell asleep outside listening to that book, you forgot you were moving studios and didnt pay the light bill, or....nope only those two options.
I so wish that OS was still alive. It’s so underrated.
I don't. That os had no apps what so ever and the phones sucked ass. I should know I had one.
They really had a vision to do something different, but it's a shame the supporting ecosystem never took off
ray taylor no phones had a good hardware but had no apps
The thing is, it might come back, microsoft is scaling down full windows 10 so it can run on snapdragons. I miss it too.
Only thing to hate was the store.
why did you hate the store
@@debbieharry387 cause no apps. I had a Lumia 800 and you couldn’t download Netflix, Hulu or anything but you could play a shitty version of Splinter Cell Conviction. No apps that anyone actually wanted or needed and just full of useless crap no one was ever downloading.

The main problem that made me switch to iPhone was the lack of apps. I had no problem with the OS.
And as a developer it was a bliss. Building apps that worked on all Windows versions.
I still hope that they can revive the OS again some day.
Well no hope now, Microsoft's phone runs android now.
@@sriramsundar8388 they only did that because they haven't complete windows 10x and windows arm is still not good enough
I've had my 650 for about 2 years now, it'll hurt like hell when I upgrade
That's so true the best ui ever
As a Android fans, it's true. It's shame lack of apps especially from google killed Windows Phone.
Going to an iPhone SE hurt, but it hurt even more trying to go to Android before i returned it lol
the "wasteland" situation is reflected by user adoption, it was a wasteland because so few adopted it, because developers will see a platform as "worthy" if there's potential for profit.
The windows Phone keyboard is unbeatable and the only keyboard close to it is the blackberry keyboard
Yes, keyboard is amazing. I had to get an android again and even after 2 months of use, keyboard is still shit.
Yeah, I’m on an iPhone, and the swipe function doesn’t work as well as it did in my lumia, that thing was awesome
The thing I missed most about Windows Phone was the keyboard and the amazing autocorrect. Never found one like it since.
*I've used SwiftKey for years and it's not as good *
Joe MacDougall This. I would pay DAMN good money for the Windows Phone keyboard on Android.
Windows Phone Keyboard was HELLA AWESOME
Yep, Android auto correction sucks (at least in Portuguese, which is BAD). WP never got it wrong
totally agree.. autocorrect and the way keyboard is design in windows phone are great
Yeah the windows keyboard had really good swipe functionality and could usually figure out the word I wanted based on the context of the sentence.
HabiOS Yeah I know, sad but true.
Really shot themselves in the foot by not being able to
get all the WP 8.1 devices update to W10M
I mean that's understandable. Adoption of windows phones was very low.
+HabiOS -- Google does all that to kill ANY windows-phone support,
yet the justice dept went after MS for including with the OS a free web-browser so users could download Firefox.

True😂
All the quirks and features!
Had to swap my Lumia 1520 for Galaxy Note 8 a moth ago because of the degraded battery life. Still miss the Lumia device.
I had a Lumia 950 forever! I miss it so much. I ended up moving into a Razer Phone because I had broken the 950 past the point of fixing it on accident. I love my Razer Phone but it still doesn't have many features of the 950 that were there years ago!
Do u still have it? How's it holding up with social media apps? I'm thinking of going back to my 950 soon.
What do you use for RUclips ? I think even PayPal is gone from windows now.
Windows Phone 8 would not run on anything less than dual-core, while Android would still happily run on a single core.
A. G. The only thing you have to watch out is if they put lower internal storage. Just like LG with their Optimus L9 P769.
A. G. Try looking for Microsoft Launcher in the Google Play Store it is a Windows OS on a Android Phone. Also it can send anything from your Android Phone to your Computer / Laptop that has Windows if you have a Windows account with one push of a button.
that would even run asphalt 8,flawlessly.
I'll always miss WP 10 phones. The system flies in any hardware. So classic.
Unfortunately, it had very limited hardware support compared to Android. While Android supported a bunch of different ARM SoCs, Windows Phone/Mobile only ran on one.
I had a very different experience with my lumia 650.
i loved my lumia 950. its really unfortunate that they didnt fix the bugs before they called it dead
Silvio Britto Try looking for Microsoft Launcher in the Google Play Store it is as close to a Windows OS on a Android Phone. Also it can send anything from your Android Phone to your Computer / Laptop that has Windows if you have a Windows account with one push of a button.

Give a thumbs up if you still use a windows phone to this day, I have a lumia 950xl and I love my cityman :)
Eddy Surcan hi bro how's ur lumia 950 now ?
950 here. Still don't get all the comments on apps. If you compare how for instance RUclips works on my Lumia950 in the browsers with iOs or Android app version... you really don't want to use an app again. So indeed, there is no app for RUclips, but I don't care. And this counts for a whole lot of other 'apps'.
mytube is a very good app
1020 with 42MP Camera forever!
I still love windows mobile.
Well y'all better join the enemy because windows phones are gone 😂😂
I miss my Lumia! I have been using an Android phone for the last 8 months, and still miss Windows Phone...😭😭😭
Windows was Legend
I replaced mine with a iPhone, first a 5s then a SE. I wish I had that Lumia back.
Not me. That Windows phone was killing me back then.
same here!
For this reason I am not switching to Android.
Lots of good ideas from Microsoft, they had everything but a marketing backbone. It's an absolute tragedy that they bailed on this OS.
David Ross they just needed any type of marketing like you said also if they could have gotten their apps fixed they really could have stayed in the game.
I really want a relaunched windows phone to succeed. The Surface line is brilliant and is a worthy competitor to the Mac lineup.
Android is very slow & buggy and phones start to hang in just 1-1.5 years, whereas even low end Windows phones are working as good as new even after 3-4 years
I had a Lumia 1520. GOD I LOVED THAT PHONE!
I kid-you-not I used to dream about still using that phone after I gave it up :(
Sonic6293 I've still got mine, even though I don't use it day to day.
Yeah still got my white 1520... Occasionally I break it out for a blast from the past.
Windows mobile has never been dead, Microsoft killed it for strange reasons. it was making money more than Bing now, but Microsoft still keeps Bing. in some countries like italy, it had more market cap than iOS.
weird.
Malik true ms phones were way user friendly than android or iOS, but that's why Google killed it.
Satya Nadella wants to clean house and get rid of Steve Ballmer's men and since Windows Phone was Steve Ballmer's project, Satya Nadella killed it. Windows would have 20-25% market now if it wasn't killed
Bing makes much money, search for the Video Bing isn't a failure
Diego Kant the icon was... An icon
Hiram Butler the Icon was a Verizon exclusive 930.
Diego Kant yea I used it on t-mobile, the 929 was great
Ahh that 520. It was back then a best budget phone... period! I still have one here!
Saimoom Safayet Akash I still have my 520 too XD
That was amazing, I loved it to
Funny, Android never had the apps that Apple’s IOS did--at least, not for the first several years.
Almost as if RUclips, Gmail, Maps were owned by competitors... Oh wait.
Facebook and Instagram boycotting was bullshit though.
Best thing about windows phone for me, you could hear youtube videos even when the phone is locked.
That's bad design not a good thing
this is my name yea that bad design is now called youtube premium
Rahul Baidya you could also download videos directly to the phone, since microsoft designed the youtube app themselves and not google, which google responded by forcing them to remove the feature entirely, I miss windows phone :(

The one thing I now really miss is the consistency. From update to update, things worked the same way they always did. Android on the other hand fucks with things without a care in the world (Battery saver and ambient display between Android 8 and 9 come to mind).

Do u guys have a real RUclips app?
"even the worst and cheapest Windows Phone device was fast and smooth for basic tasks in an era when cheap Android phones were constantly lagging and having problems"
No it wasn't.
It had just about every app i needed honestly (except for all the games that iOS had and snap chat).

I liked how Windows phones had some the best features. My HTC Titan 2 had a 4.7 inch screen and a 16 MP camera in 2012
Sahaj Patel Some budget smartphones weren't that great in that year.
I still have my lumia 950 as a backup and its battery is huge. The camera is also one I'm the best I've used, I'm really sorry its dead.
I envy you.. my battery life (950 too) since day one was, well, disappointing.
I used to have a Lumia 950 and It was terribly disappointing when i got a S8 and discovered that the battery life of a S8 is half of my Lumia 950
The battery life of my 950 was good- 8/10. My v20 has a 5/10 battery imo.
It's really not,the battery life on it was trash
It was literally Windows in your pocket, tbh it sounds like a great idea and I wish it actually succeeded
I got so depressed when it became apparent Windows Phone was failing. It was brilliant and very underrated
Was using a windows phone till early January . I also loved the keyboard. So now my go to keyboard is the gboard as it is the closest to the Microsoft keyboard. Absolutely loved typing on it.
Was a dang good KB!
couldn't agree more
There are some keyboard options from MS available in the Play Store. I use one of their app called- Hub Keyboard, and I find it closest to the native keypad experience on WP. Do try it out :)
Try the Microsoft Hub Keyboard
I am actually watching this on a Lumia 640XL right now. This is my backup phone and I'm waiting for my new phone to get in the mail. There are things that I love about Win10 Mobile, but a lot of things I hate too! Great vid, Bud!
Tony Clay Since it is your backup phone, do you know is there way to move your Whatsapp chat history from Windows phone to Android without losing anything? Last I remember the regular backup feature on Whatsapp didn't work that way.
I don't use whatsapp. Sorry, I'm no help here.
Oh okay, thanks anyway.
Agreed.
It was called Project Astoria and it was closed by Microsoft in 2015 or smth like this

I get updates every other Tuesday still. Windows Insider program.
Wow...Linus Tech Tipps Thumbnail ...the video was just released 3 hours ago...
Stefan Robien yeah i noticed that too
Me too lol
Windows Tiles has always been the best mobile interface. Easily.
You said it man! Shouldn't we start a petition to Microsoft or something?
If only it were that simple. Their new push with Android+Windows integration is very encouraging though, and that has actually been part of why I’ve been using macOS and iOS as my primary platform; the integration between mobile and desktop has been phenomenal, and if Microsoft and Google can replicate that, then that would be excellent.
As it is, Windows is a practical desktop OS, and Android is a practical mobile OS, so having them cooperate is huge. Those are the world’s two largest platforms! It might even push me far enough to get a new Android device as my primary next year instead of an iPhone for the first time in ages, if they do it right.
terrible tiles make it confusing app drawer is better.
@@MrWalker1000 ....Swipe to the right and there's all the apps. You non windows mobile users just like to bash.
Agreed. To think that Metro came out with the Zune a billion years ago is shocking. Microsoft design was years ahead of the rest.
Snazzy Labs Yeah, too bad that Zune never seen the light again. And Groove is going to be gone at the end of this year.
I don't actually use apps so I am mostly ok with my windows 10 phone from a few years ago. I would like if apps got any support, but the web and contacts work well.
I wouldn't recommend just because there is no support for the phone.
It's just kinda sad to see such good hardware withpoor software
If you went over the phone's quirks and features you *have* to give the phone a DougScore
Right after the Apollo LS swapped 911.

No cup holder.
I wish windows phones were still around.
Same here really miss it
Lumias: Best phones I've ever had.
How to angry react to this
They got rid of the inbuild app but there are third party apps which still can do UKW radio (for instance "Radio FM Phone").
I've been using Windows Phones for years now and I'm still using one today in 2018 ! Everyone who asks me about it wants one
Lol i get that a lot too
Hope Windows phone revives and can compete with Android and iOS
I’m happy with Nadella’s performance and think he is doing a great job of cleaning up after Ballmer.
To this day I still have no idea of Ballmer's involvement in Microsoft. Seems like Gates and Allen did all the work.
Doug the type of guy... oops wrong channel.
😭
Lot of good stuff from windows mobile:
- Glance screen
- Double tap to wake
- Tap on the navigation bar to turn off the screen
- Bottom navigation bar
- Live tiles were really simple an elegant... way better than widgets
- Background media upload (Whatsapp, Instagram, etc...)
Im currently on my old Lumia 1020 as a backup phone because my HTC M8 died two days ago. I love it. I wish it had continued to improve and that they were still active, I loved the system and the logic and how I could use it as an extention of my laptop. Now many things are offline but I'll always love it.
Some things about Windows Phone are actually really good.
Sincere efforts, thanks for video. Its pain to see windows mobile dead. Still using Lumia 950 as my backup.
1:55 i don’t remember ever having this on my iphone. how did you get that feature?? 😲
I believe it’s only on phones 10 and up
Please review BlackBerry OS. The Z30 was my favourite with its gesture based navigation and true dark mode.
Yeah, samsung added some features from this, like the buttons at the bottom in Oneui.
As a fan and an owner of windows phone, I always imagine what would this smart cellphone war look like if Microsoft jump in a few years earlier than the WP launched originally.
But the real question is, did you end up accepting Phillip Chan’s invitation to join Affiliate program?
Oh, yeah, so..... no.
Seeing this video make me feel that I am standing beside the grave of one the greatest mobile OSs ever!!....salute to windows phone
One feature that I loved that you didn't mention is that you can put lots of things on your home screen, like web shortcuts.
It's been 7 years since my last windowsphonr.. And the hole it has left is still not filled by either iOS or iPhone 😢
OS - best mobile keyboard bar none (still is with swiftkey) // pivot UI // live tiles // aggregating of all social contact, texts, and email info under said contact // silky smooth UI response // back button // home button // search button // minimal steps to get certain tasks done (smoked by windows phone) UI design // Lumia Camera software and UI // Ran great on 512 megs of ram
Hardware - Dedicated shutter button with half press to focus // HAAC microphones (2012) 120 dB recordings // Optical Image Stablization (2012) // polycarbonate unibody // curved glass screens (Lumia 920) // wireless charging (2012) // low end phones with great cameras (my Lumia 635 took and still takes great pics) // Lumia line - made by the best phone manufacturer in the world.
Still have a soft spot for my Lumia 920, so way ahead of its time and hardly anyone knew.
It really is a bummer that Windows just couldnt get their OS off the ground. Im sure if it had, windows 10 would have alot of amazing features, maybe even rival mac/iOS's integration
Doug the type of guy....wait wrong tall pasty guy. I heard quirks and features and it triggered a reflex in my head.
I am holding onto my Alcatel Idol 4S with Windows just for the dual stereo speakers to listen to music.
How can an amazing company give up on a amazing phone smh.
Lmao i still daily a windows phone 😂
You make content that is worth watching over and over again
Dude you captured what makes this phone amazing. It breaks my heart when I had to leave my HP Elite X3, but others like me and myself we'll be back when Project Andromeda drops in the future :3 SUBSCRIBED!
0:35 Hello Doug DeMuro
Are you Doug brother. You even say quirks and features, which Doug always says
Thanks for this video....I maybe the only one but I liked Windows more than Android and iOS
You're not alone! I also still love and use the Windows Phone!
A Phone ahead of its time
Maybe in few years we will see it coming back
