    Apple and Android fans may not like to admit it, but the Windows phone UI was, and still is, the best phone UI ever created. It still had faults, but if MS had managed the app-store 'wasteland' issue better I'd still be using mine today, instead of having had to swap to other phones for the apps. My Lumia 1020 was the only mobile phone I've never wanted to upgrade from after a year or so of use, which to me says it all.

I miss it and the ability to sync between PC. Very professional phone. I also loved when they were paired up with Nokia because the camera quality was AMAZING. Even on my 521 with no flash in low lights. I sacrificed no front facing camera on that phone because I loved the OS and user interface so much lol. Not to mention the smart battery life. Good times, good times. Even though WP didn't have all of the popular apps the redeeming quality is the few apps they did have were vetted and secure. Microsoft why didn't you try harder instead of being toe in at poolside? You can't accomplish much without immersion as with anything in life.

      I don't think that you can run the latest Android on a single core. My old Phone has a single core Snapdragon S2 @1ghz with 500mb RAM running Android4.1 which came out in the same year as Win8. It does basic stuff like Whatsapp, but when it comes to video streaming or games, the apps are force closing themself, and even the home screen takes some time to load. I think it would be even worse with newer versions of Android.

    • @makasete30
      @makasete30 6 лет назад +1

      ®ioT there were even rumours of a surface phone for a while, and I had high hopes for the brand name making it successful. There was a time when I was seriously considering the windows phone, but the lack of apps kept putting me off, like many others, I suppose. Then as the market share decreased I didn’t want to invest into a dead product line. The lesson I suppose is that windows should have marketed it hard from the beginning, and worked hard at attracting developers earlier.

    • @iot1452
      @iot1452 6 лет назад +3

      makasete30 I believe it can succeed. Microsoft just wasn't sure if their phones would succeed in a marketplace where Android is king with maximum number of phones from third world market exclusive sub $150 phones to $800 flagships. But with privacy concerns and Google's blatant data collection practices getting more awareness, I believe the time is ripe for a relaunch in the future following the surface lineups design language. Plus, there was a time, from 2010(the launch of the iPad) to 2015 where PC sales plummeted and tech pundits raved about how tablets would kill the PC for good. But this trend has reversed and tablets have become obsolete, except for the iPad which is still not a volume seller. MS phone can bounce back as there's no way Google can ever replace Windows as the primary commercial software supplier. The Chrome OS experiment proved that. Plus, an Apple-Google duopoly isn't healthy either. More the competitors, better products anf services for the end consumer.

      No, keeping up an unprofitable OS and also making first party hardware for it is expensive and MS were tanking losses from WP. Bing actually makes a profit and is essential for data collection and the cloud. If MS didn't pull the plug on WP as soon as they did, their stock would not be as high as they are today (nearing 1trill market cap). MS killed WP because of business reasons. Why WP failed is another complex issue with its own causes.

    Windows Phone had another HUGE plus you didn't even mention: even the worst and cheapest Windows Phone device was fast and smooth for basic tasks in an era when cheap Android phones were constantly lagging and having problems. The OS was just superior in optimization (but this was partly due to the fact that there were few manufacturers who made Windows Phone devices) without costing an arm and a leg like an iPhone would in certain markets. That was the main reason why I bought a Lumia 610 back in 2011, and even without the notification bar (there wasn't any until WP8), a Marketplace that had almost no interesting apps, I'm really glad I got to experience that OS back then and I still miss features like the keyboard, the People hub, the tiles and the music player (Zune Pass was terrible, but the program itself and the app sync were awesome).

      Bullshit. My 200$ Lumia is lagging as fuck, constantly closing apps, compared to my 100$ android. Windows phone is awful. It has absolutely no apps, no customisation, they even removed a fucking radio. And whats worst, is that windows mobile 8 supports and has way more apps than windows 10, on which developers refused to create apps, because of how awful the os is.

I had to switch back to my Moto E (very similarly spec'd) and had a much better experience with that since the fucking thing could at least run flappy bird clones without stuttering.

    Awesome video. I too just pulled out and reset my old HTC One M8 for Windows and yeah holy crap I missed it. The WP UI is incredible. If only Microsoft pushed the Android app bridge a little harder and held out a little longer. The day Microsoft announced it would start focusing on business customers and wouldn't make more flagships is the day WP died. Not even a week after that third party devs stopped supporting it and consumers like myself ditched it completely. And to think there was a time when Windows Phone was nearing 4% market share. Thanks for mentioning the bit about UI elements near the bottom on WP. This was the hardest part when I switched to Android. Who in their right mind programs browser search bars at the top of a big ass screen?!?! All the browsers I found for Android do this except for one that is not updated anymore so I use an out of date browser now lol. Just put them at the bottom like WP did.

    I completely missed my windows phone. The issue here was that even though Microsoft highly optimized their own UI for their apps which allowed for the amazing user experience, they also pretty much required third party apps do the same. Not only that, but since Universal Windows Apps was not mainstream (most people were still running windows 7), a lot of developers just didn't jump onboard. I hope Microsoft finds a way to re-release the windows 10 UI, either as a custom build of Android (similar to how Samsung modifies the code) or with the long awaited surface phone.

    • @NinjaSynFrey
      @NinjaSynFrey 6 лет назад

      Don't forget the API resets from WP7 to WP8 to WP10. Burning developers three times in a row isn't exactly trying to show trust in a platform. Ultimately Microsoft screwed up on that. While UWP may not have succeeded as Microsoft would've hoped, they are still continuing to make improvements with each feature update to become close in feature parity as Win32. Little by little many of Windows 10's components are being replaced with UWP. Time will tell if they will continue to commit to UWP and PWA (the only savior to the app gap issue).

    WindowsPhone was the best innovation of century. It made me go from Symbian NOKIA to SmartPhone LUMIA. Yes, that is it, I said. Tiles, dark mode, performance of the cheapest device, usefullness and some great aps they were made at the time. But time went by, apps started to dissappear, no now was there, writing one was costly, NOKIA was sold, new devices never had the same mechanical quality, software stayed behind, and Microsoft went on that "Windows 10" nonsense on the phone which is utterly messed up, unconsistent, broken, and lacking features it was present in 8.1 - the only two things I appreciate on W10m is: EDGE and nicer home screen. Everything else is more cumbersome and lacking. I use daily WP8.1 and W10m and 10 is just for browsing,... for everything else WP8.1 is better.

    1. Updates: No matter your manufacturer or your hardware, you got all security updates for your currently installed OS version directly from Microsoft until support end. Pretty much like on a windows desktop OS.
    2. Performance on low end devices: I remember using the Nokia 735 which had just 1 GB of RAM, but the system felt very responsive and fast. One thing I respect about Windows Phone OS is that it has a pretty consistent UI going on throughout it. I can't say the same about Android or iOS. In iOS, look at the App Store home page, it literally looks like a basic HTML page with a bunch of tags. Android, don't even get me started, with so many manufacturers, the standards and guidelines Google may want developers to stick to are pretty difficult to enforce.

      If only it were that simple. Their new push with Android+Windows integration is very encouraging though, and that has actually been part of why I’ve been using macOS and iOS as my primary platform; the integration between mobile and desktop has been phenomenal, and if Microsoft and Google can replicate that, then that would be excellent.
      As it is, Windows is a practical desktop OS, and Android is a practical mobile OS, so having them cooperate is huge. Those are the world’s two largest platforms! It might even push me far enough to get a new Android device as my primary next year instead of an iPhone for the first time in ages, if they do it right.

    People might disagree but to me Windows Phone 8 (MAYBE 8.1) was the best of all 3 (7, 8 and 10). It had vast improvements from 7, still a long way to go but it didn't change much or the concept. Windows 10 kind of fucked up everything in the attempt to get into that ecosystem with PC's, tablets, Surface, etc.
    My mom had a Lumia 640 XL and after one of the latest updates, her Radio FM feature was GONE. Like... the phone had radio feature, but she was forced to use an online radio or paid service. I know it might sound silly but it's very stupid.
    That and even if people say "lack of apps" which is true, the ones that were there weren't incredibly well implemented. Like back then, Messenger on Android already had bubbles. On Windows Phone not only did NOT have bubbles, but also every time you would multitask, it would have to load again. All the time.
    I loved Windows Phone, but it wasn't great natively either. If you want to get into this market today your product has to either A) kill it on the concept/idea or B) be almost flawless.
    Look at OnePlus. The 1+1 might not have been the greatest or most perfect phone, but at the time, the concept of "more for less" got nailed. And that is why we have OnePlus today still doing their thing (although stepping away from that concept).

      They got rid of the inbuild app but there are third party apps which still can do UKW radio (for instance "Radio FM Phone"). You just have to download one of those from the microsoft store now... yes I do not get why they killed that app neighter, but it is not like they killed the whole feature or something...

      @-T-X-M- In my opinion, version 8.1 had some big visual downgrades. Zune/XBox Music was a lot prettier than Groove Music. The Marketplace used to have a changing background image whereas the Store had nothing but an empty background. The old Games hub was looked better than XBox Games hub. Skydrive went from live tiles to static icons. Large header bar titles with clipping texts were phased out in many places, etc.

      True! Amazing how many people have never heard of Windows Phone. Also a lot of tv series use Windows Phone as product placement. After seeing that a lot of people still ask what kind of phone they were using. If only MS would have put a bit more effort in Marketing, things might have gone differently. But a lot of mistakes were made :-(

    oh my word everything you said about what was great on the windows phone is exactly what I loved about windows phones! I used a windows phone until the very end and loved it! I liked the dark mode, I loved the home screen it was so simple and everything was right there right where you needed it and you could arrange it anyway you wanted and personalize it. You could pin your frequently used contacts right to the home screen. The control center was perfect easy to use and self explanatory unlike the IOS ugh I use and iPhone now and that control center is a pain in my butt! There was just so much about the windows phone that was awesome. I wish other phone companies would implement some of the popular features of the windows phones to their platforms. We can always hope!!

    Ballmer and Sonofsky need to be boiled in oil for what they did to Microsoft. Ballmer for his complete and utter lack of vision and general incompetence and Sonofsky for corporate political gaming Windows and ultimately causing the division's death. What was really great about the platform was not only the Windows mobile OS/UI but also the way that it integrated into the desktop. You would make an update on your phone and it would appear virtually instantly on anything that had your name on it. It was secure, quick and beautifully designed with a real design statement. I don't care if you hated it. I loved it and at least it stood for something instead of the clone wars of mediocrity we live with now.

    Yeah... I miss when browsers put their address bar on the bottom.
    As an ex-Windows user, I love the details that Android hasn't event had it by now.
    Like that half notification centre, which need small gesture.
    Browser's address bar on the bottom screen.
    Believe it or not, I love the gesture, lots of swipe action instead of tap.
    But once again, it is dead, no essential apps for my lifestyle

    Lot of good stuff from windows mobile:
    - Glance screen
    - Double tap to wake
    - Tap on the navigation bar to turn off the screen
    - Bottom navigation bar
    - Live tiles were really simple an elegant... way better than widgets
    - Background media upload (Whatsapp, Instagram, etc...)

    Im currently on my old Lumia 1020 as a backup phone because my HTC M8 died two days ago. I love it. I wish it had continued to improve and that they were still active, I loved the system and the logic and how I could use it as an extention of my laptop. Now many things are offline but I'll always love it.

    Man... My first smartphone was a Lumia 610! It was... great for it's time. Simply. And sooooooo intuitive! I remember when I first switched to Android and was like "WTF is this?!" First thing I did was I somehow accidentally called 112 (something like 911 in the US, but in the EU)... Yeah... I still have my Lumia next to my bed 😂

    I know I came across this video late but here's the thing. Windows 10 mobile is not dead. I wouldn't trade my 950XL for any mobile phone on the market today. Here's the thing people don't realize. Windows doesn't need apps. It uses WEBSITES, plain and simple. I despise IOS and Android. I will not stop using my Windows Phone until it stops working and if possible, I will buy another. I'm not going to pay $1000 for a cellphone. That is ridiculous. My 950XL is beautiful, functional and does what I need. Forget Android and iPhone. This is where it's at.

    I purchased a non-XL Lumia 950 back in 2016 and, despite the lack of third-party apps, MAN did I love that thing. I loved how customizable the live tiles were and I had a really satisfying setup that I'm still kind of proud of lol.
    I ultimately switched to Android due to the lack of third-party apps and sold my 950 to fund a Moto G5 Plus, but I'll always fondly remember my time with Windows Mobile.

    OS - best mobile keyboard bar none (still is with swiftkey) // pivot UI // live tiles // aggregating of all social contact, texts, and email info under said contact // silky smooth UI response // back button // home button // search button // minimal steps to get certain tasks done (smoked by windows phone) UI design // Lumia Camera software and UI // Ran great on 512 megs of ram
    Hardware - Dedicated shutter button with half press to focus // HAAC microphones (2012) 120 dB recordings // Optical Image Stablization (2012) // polycarbonate unibody // curved glass screens (Lumia 920) // wireless charging (2012) // low end phones with great cameras (my Lumia 635 took and still takes great pics) // Lumia line - made by the best phone manufacturer in the world.
    Still have a soft spot for my Lumia 920, so way ahead of its time and hardly anyone knew.

    Another Windows Phone keyboard innovation I really loved was the ThinkPad-like scroll button on the keyboard, which allowed for easy and precise cursor selection, but what was great was the function you could 'compress' buttons of the keyboard more to the side of the phone so you could reach everything without straining your thumb.

    Came here from your Kin video. Like I said there, I bought the Windows Phone (7) during it's first year, and absolutely Loved it! Used my Lumia all the way into 2016. Yes, the app market was abysmal, but it did exactly what I needed it to do, it was a snappy and lovely OS, and great cameras. The only reason I switched to Android was, Pokémon GO, of all things. And, even I could see the phone dying a slow and painful death. :(
