What I enjoy about BB is you take on more than just cars. You do many things at home stuff we all do. I expect a chainsaw, lawn mower or gas weed eater video. Thanks for staying down to earth and real. Ian @RustoModz
Safety First! You really should wear protective glasses when under a vehicle looking up, not just when drilling etc. especially with the amount of work you do. I installed a tow bar on my wife's car and had a rusty piece of metal fall into my eye. Had to have it dug out with a needle at the doctors surgery....not nice. Safety First!
You had a 15/32 drill.... Hint: using a pilot hole of somewhere around 1/8" through first makes drilling the larger hole a breeze, and keeps the larger where you want it.
Most definitely! I just worried with this drill from underneath the truck, breaking a wrist while grabbing a pilot hole. Would’ve for sure helped the process though!
Hello, new follower here from Hamiltonville Farms. Hank speaks highly of you guys. I like that tow truck. I’d love to have a truck like that on our farm. Great channel. Thanks.
Your 66 sure needs the factory tail lights fixed. Just that detail gives it a touch of class. And it would make a great video, especially if you rebuild the light housing with a new pigtail and lens. Chrome tape inside the light housing makes them quite a bit brighter. That would work on your camper and truck. Thanks for the fun. :-)
Oh absolutely! Just gotta make the investment for some Ford script jeweled lenses 😊😊 This truck definitely needs a matching trailer or camper! Up for a vintage camper rebuild??
Thats the best about a 300 6. You really dont understand its torque until you tow something. It will accelerate the exact same loaded or unloaded. It won't go fast, but itll pull like a mule. I love mine in my 85.
That truck just runs awesome I remember way back when you first got it and got it running and now it runs as good as everything else that u have and it pulls the camper like it is not even back there . I like the old truck I'd drive it cross country and you can't beat those 300 6 cylinders they are tough engines which anything ford is anyway 😁 even the festiva 3 cylinder cars was a power house 🤣😂 keep up the cool videos and cant wait to see more on the falcon or fairlane? Anyway its a cool car lol
Very dim lights are a few things, one is the sun doesn't let you see all, two, the grounds are just not quite cutting it. And three, when the stock flasher is put on, its for only two bulbs.... that rapid flasher is a "quick make and break" too light duty turn signal flasher cube. So get one for multiple bulbs, they will be much brighter and work at a normal signal flash rate. Hope this helps you for even future jobs. Nice install now wait till you wire in the multi bulb or in other words... it has a separate light bulb for the brake and the signal. Especially on rigs that have one way and the thing towed is another... not as much fun as watching someone else.
Hi. Quick question... How does the brake controller know how much pressure to put on the trailer brake? Theres a big difference between adjusting your speed slightly, to time the traffic lights, and trying your damndest not to squish next doors child. The brake switch is a binary thing. On, or off. You don't want the trailer brakes locking on every time you want to slow down a little, any more than you want them to just polish the rotors in an emergency stop situation. So how does it differentiate? In Europe, we use a hydraulic hitch. In effect, theres a brake master cylinder built into the hitch, so as the tow vehicle slows down, the inertia of the trailer pushes against the hitch and applies the trailer brake. The harder you stop, the more pressure you put on the hitch, so the harder the brakes get applied. Its a simple, reliable, non-electronic system thats been around since trailer brakes stopped being operated by rods. Actually, my car transporter still uses rod operated brakes, which take a bit of setting up to get right, so I know all about over anxious trailer brakes!
You should cut the 10amp fuse out from the main power to the break controller and replace with a circuit breaker. They are cheep at auto stores. This way if you blow a fuse u won’t have to stop with no trailer breaks it will click back on.
Hi! Just wondering ... would you have the need to weld (tack or otherwise/cotter pin nut & bolts) your trailer hitch to the truck frame for extra safety precautions? certain jurisdiction road laws require. Nice clean job for a deserved truck. Thank you for the videos, much appreciated.
I’m not really positive, I used factory hitch bolts with locking nuts from a GM 3/4 ton. I don’t believe we have that requirement here, especially personal. They won’t come loose as they’re are but extra precaution never hurts! Hope you’re enjoying 😊
Might want to get some mud flaps or that trailer will get dirty quick. Another thing the tail lights on the truck look questionable, these trucks look sharp when they are upgraded with LEDs plus you'll be able to see way more. just a thought.
It has the original full size lights underneath that need a refresh but haven’t jumped on the expense of new lenses yet. The temporary ones do appear pretty well, but once the originals are repaired these will be running lights again.
Some trailers have a hydraulic trailer brakes operated by the hitch.. Not what i would call simple as you have a second brake master cylinder on the hitch that sets out in the weather. Electric trailer brakes are fairly popular simple and standardized...
That's what I was afraid of. You have a vintage old truck and you can use the good vintage proportional type of trailer brake controller with that. You don't have to use the modern suicidal crap that you're installing on there. You can use a vintage old proportional trailer brake controller that hooks up to the master cylinder with steel tube. Those have the proportional breaking that none of the modern trailer brake controllers have. What your installing looks like it just has an on and off switch which is extremely stupid for controlling trailer brakes. You would never have an on/off switch for brakes on the tow vehicle! The modern crap is dangerous and suicidal. Sometimes you can find the Kelsey Hayes trailer brake controllers on eBay. The ones with the metal case and the crinkle finish on it and the metal tube that goes to the master brake cylinder on the tow vehicle. Hayes still makes the old style trailer brake controller to use on big over the road trucks and they still tie into the brake system of those tow vehicles. That style is air over electric for big rigs that tow big fifth wheel RVs. The type of trailer brake controllers they made for cars and trucks was hydraulic over electric. both of those have proportional breaking for the trailer not just a stupid on and off switch. I will never buy a tow vehicle that I cannot install the old style proportional trailer brake controller on. The Auto industry started putting ABS brakes on cars and trucks in the 80s and they made it illegal to put the old style proportional trailer brake controllers on the newer ABS brake systems. And I heard a lot of complaints from other people that were used to the good breaking system and hated the new trailer brake controllers. The pendulum type trailer brake controllers are dangerous especially on slippery surfaces because when you put your brakes on the tow vehicle starts sliding and the trailer brakes never come on to assist in the stopping process! ABS brakes still lock up on slippery surfaces like ice and snow. Serge brakes on rental trailers are dangerous for the same reason. I've seen and heard people talk about how much longer it takes to stop when pulling a trailer and how much harder they have to push on their brake pedal when they're pulling a trailer. It's all because of crappy modern trailer brake controllers that don't tie into the brake system of the tow vehicle.
It’s a fully adjustable controller just like my newer trucks use. I can adjust gain according to the load I have and I can adjust the rate at which it stops according to pedal depress. I adjust all of this in the driveway before I even get going. I’ve never had an issue before with this setup. I have a truck with the old Kelsey Hayes controller, it works pretty decent but not nearly as adjustable as this new one. For me makes the ride and stopping feel much safer. I’ve done nothing but tow every other day for roughly 7 years. I’m not saying you’re wrong about anything and do appreciate the information. I feel comfortable with this setup though as it’s been well tested, by me.
@@BudgetBuildz how does it sense how much pressure you put on the brake pedal? I've heard several people say that when they're pulling a trailer with the newer brake controller they have to put a lot more pressure on the brake pedal and it takes them longer to stop. I have heard complaints from lots of different people since the eighties because of those newer brake controllers. I know they've had some really crappy ones like the pendulum types that never work right. When the trailer brake controller is adjusted properly you can put the same amount of pressure on the brake pedal to stop whether you're towing or not. I've also heard people complain about the trailer brake controllers that were just like an on and off switch. Those may have been from back in the '90s. I've been driving cars and trucks pulling all kinds of trailers for over 50 years. Even semis. I've been driving heavy equipment for a living for most of my life also. The last time I checked available trailer brake controllers on the market I did not find any that I would trust. Maybe they have better ones out now. But I know for a fact that for it to be a good brake controller that it has to be able to sense how much pressure is in the brake lines on the tow vehicle. There is no way around that fact. Even if you put a variable sensor on the brake pedal it would still not be very accurate. Because brake pedal position varies over time even with the same pressure put on it. But please explain to me how your trailer brake controller can sense the amount of pressure in the brake lines on the tow vehicle. I did not see anything about that part in your video. Like I said before, Kelsey Hayes still makes those identical trailer brake controllers for big rigs so they have to be good. Those Kelsey Hayes trailer brake controllers for the big rigs are the air over electric type where the others are hydraulic over electric. P.S. even now when I look at trailer brake controllers for sale online they seem to be mostly the pendulum type which are dangerous and suicidal on slippery roads. Those work about the same as the surge brakes on rental trailers that I absolutely hate.
