You need to have her back! She gives awesome advice. One thing I will say is both Grandma Margaret & Jerry were bullied growing up & turned out to be so kind & gentle with their words. I think I’ve never stopped to think that bullied kids turn into grandparents who will understand what a child is really feeling because it happened to them.

Also, a good suggestion if anyone feels lonely, unfulfilled, or needs something to do, go to your local animal shelters and volunteer or just hang out with the abandoned animals. Many animals sit in a cage all day every day until they are euthanized, unfortunately, and a lot of shelters always need help!

And who knows? If you are in the position for it, you may also make a friend for life. 😊 I have volunteered, interned, and worked in several shelters. I sometimes came home with a new buddy, and we healed together.

FKS has always been such a healing show for me, but this episode truly took it to another level. My dad passed away two years ago, and I have a very strained relationship with a mother who doesn't understand boundaries. Hearing your grandma talk about distancing yourself from people who are unkind is a message I never heard growing up. It was always "you never turn your back on family, no matter what." If you read this, please tell your grandma thank you. She also made me feel so close to my own grandma, who has also passed away.

Just the two of us! I'm really excited. And I've tried to verbalize that we need to connect with each other more now that our house will be empty. We have some healing & growth to do but I think we're on the same page to face this next chapter together and live our best life! Thank you Grandma Margaret, Jerry & Morgan for making me feel like a part of the family! ❤

That first story - for a moment there I was like, did I submit this and forget about it?? My relationship with my mother is very similar to what was described. I’m sure the advice will help the person who submitted, because it’s so given me some ideas on how to proceed. I can see the second story happening to me, also.
Weight has been a major source of conflict in my relationship with my mum. - I’ve always felt that she’s treated me better when I’m engaging in diet culture and essentially starving myself.
What’s really helped me is to actively try improve my own relationship with my body - diversifying my social media has helped me to really see plus sized bodies as beautiful (by that I don’t just mean people who are 1X. I mean actual plus sized people). Moving out helped a lot because I don’t have to hear her comments at every meal time (guess what - turns out I eat much healthier when there’s no one yelling at me just for being in the kitchen). I also started listening to podcasts like Maintenance Phrase which has really solidified my decision not to diet again. I finally feel comfortable enough to go swimming, even though my body is the largest it’s ever been. I finally dress the way I want now that I don’t have my mother telling me what is and isn’t flattering. Now when I hear her comments, I roll my eyes at it instead of being hurt like I did when I was a teenager.

My mom has always been critical of my weight and nothing is ever good enough for her. I have been the subject of her bullying since I reached 80 lbs as a kid and it’s never gotten better even though I’m at a normal, healthy weight as an adult. I’m in my thirties now and we don’t have a relationship. It’s definitely for the best. She never respected my boundaries so I had to draw a hard line in the sand years ago.

wow. i must say reading comments like this makes me feel like i’m not alone. my mom severely messed up my mental health. from narcissistic abuse, physical abuse, and comments about my physical appearance. my earliest memories are of her and my sister laughing at me pointing at my fat rolls.. she put me on intermittent fasting when i was 6 years old. she’s always told me that i couldn’t wear certain clothes like skirts and tank tops because that’s for the “pretty skinny girls.” even my calves she would make fun of because they’re naturally wide and muscular. saying i had chicken legs and looked like a man. this is still a constant battle i have with myself now as a 22 year old. i’m in therapy, but it seems like i just can’t separate myself from that little girl she so heavily bullied and abused. i hope to become confident like you and eventually accept myself for who i am..

With hurtful comments from loves ones : my new line (and I might have gotten this from Jerry hahaha but it's been HUGE) IS"are you trying to be helpful or hurtful?" Sometimes I amend a little bit with 'wait. Sorry I'm confused. Are you trying to be helpful or hurtful ? Because I don't know how to react to that"
As someone with ADHD (and rejection sensitivity) sometimes I DOOOO over analyses. Also means I maybe tend to give the benefit of the doubt when I shouldnt. ALLLSO MEANS I GOT A LOT OF SIMILAR BIRDS IN MY LIFE LOL who just may not be wording something "appropriately" and were able to back track together and get a good resolution
Or I can tell by the squirm that it was a mean comment and I can address it.
With moms boyfriend - BEEN THERE
I said to my mom 'i love you and I want you to be happy. If this makes you happy then fine. However, I'm not a fan and I don't think he treats you well. As such, honestly I'll probably not want to be around Him. So you're more than welcome to come to our place and see us or we can do lunches or whatever works - I want to keep a good relationship with you, but I'm not going to put him with him
I'm not asking you to choose, and I'm not wanting to cut you off - at all- I just want to be clear. Doesn't mean I'll never be around, just means sometimes I ought say no. It also means I'm not going to flitter myself when I speak with him. I'm choosing not to take his behaviours as a reflection of you unless you choose them to be. By which I mean, if he makes an qsshole comment and you both laugh- I will address the comment with him,.and I might say to you 'i dont think that it was funny and I suggest you ask yourself if you do or if you're laughing for.his sake." It also means when we're one on one i.might challenge you on YOUR words or reactions. I love you
I want you in my life. If you can't handle these boundaries than I respect that but I won't be changing them and those choices and actions will have consequences."

The first story, the writer sounds exactly like me and my situation with my mom. No joke I could’ve wrote that and wouldn’t have been able to tell a difference. Grandma is right tho, I had to completely cut my mom out of my life for about a year because she simply could not respect my boundaries and stop making comments about my physical appearance. We are on speaking terms now however I have had to navigate what I tell her and how much I see her. My mom also doesn’t believe in therapy so theres only so much improvement that could be made to our relationship. My whole life she made comments about my body and being “fat”, I still to this day am working through those comments and learning how to love my body and who I am. Without therapy I fear I would just become her

story 1 definitely sounds like there’s narcissism and codependency going on. trying to establish boundaries is really for the best. i think it also helps to not give large reactions when mom says these things. she’s wanting to stir things up, so either ignoring or calming restating how the comments make you feel may help.

For story 2’s op I think it’s time for that difficult sit down with her mom. It’s time for the brutal honesty of what her word’s towards you caused in your life. From the unhealthy habits to the validation seeking.
She needs to know that her words didn’t actually encourage you to get healthy. It just shamed you into bad habits to reach body goals set by her.
Tell her you won’t watch that happen to your son.
If she’s any kind of decent mom, grandma, or human, she’ll have an apology for you and a new attitude for your son.

To the first story - I would say to mother something like "Mom, I know you are thinking your remarks are helpful, but they are hurtful. I like my (whatever) and when you say hurtful and demeaning remarks - I feel resentment towards you. And I want you and I have a good time together, but you are working towards me not liking spending time with you. I want you to know about that so if you care how I feel in your presence, so you can do something about it. If you want."
