    I had no idea the old pink heads were so deadly. Makes a lot more sense that they were tearing up terminators in Space Hulk. Also this sort of unit spotlight on top of the painting and modeling is a really cool look at them before the game got so bloated. Really great work as always man

    • @edpaintsminis
      @edpaintsminis  Год назад +8

      Yeah brutal! The 8 attacks thing is great, but it's 2nd, so ultimately you're still just picking your highest dice. 1's are fumbles - so it increases the chances of a 'stealer whiffing spectacularly!'

    • @tc518
      @tc518 Год назад +2

      Agreed. Suddenly the devastation they can wreak in Space Hulk makes sense. Awesome video, man.

      I recall something about every other additional "6" rolled conferred a bonus as well. It might have been an old Necromunda thing, but even that was mostly 2nd ed. rules rehashed.

    • @VeritasAbsoluta
      @VeritasAbsoluta 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@mattslucas1521 Yes. Every 6 rolled after the first was a critical hit and added an extra +1 to your combat score. The problem is that you're as likely to roll a 1 as you are to roll a 6, so more attacks becomes useless above a certain number.

      hormaguants were even better as they were much much cheaper points wise did were almost as good in close combat. problem is they only came in lead models and were so expensive $$$or£££ wise for the points they added.

    I don't think anyone who hasn't played 2nd edition understands how devastating Tyranids were (and why they seem lame by comparison today). Excluding wounds and ballistic skill (for obvious reasons) a Genestealer is essentially on par with a Space Marine Captain...i.e. the leader of your entire company. This is balanced out by their poor armour save (you don't always have Catalyst handy). Tyranids - and particularly Genestealers were cool because with movement 12" it becomes "if I touch you, you die". It gives them a real ALIENS vibe. And this is without stratagems or tricks or special warlord traits or extra bonuses.
    Remember a marine without a jump pack only moves 8" a turn. There's no way to outrun them. They will catch you. Hormagaunts move up to 18" and can leap over obstacles. The Carnifex has 10 wounds and a save equal to terminator armour...yep. That's like ten terminators. Tyranids were far less shooty (thankfully) in 2nd edition, but they excelled at one thing; eating your face. I think 40K lost a huge fun factor when it turned all armies into "all things" in later editions. There's a reason the only edition I play is 2nd.

    • @edpaintsminis
      @edpaintsminis  Год назад +3

      Yeah scary! You're right though, Catalyst is Force 3, so it isn't always on the cards. The cool thing about them being so brutal in Hand to Hand means that an opponent might try and counter this by trying to beat them at their own game - be really cool seeing lightning claw/thunderhammer stormshield termies going toe to toe with a swarm.
      Nids are definitely less shooty, as they should be, but the venom cannon/barbed strangler is horrid! You'll be pleased to hear my Carnifex arrived today. Can't wait for the apoplectic orb to enter the fray!

    • @oskar6661
      @oskar6661 Год назад +1

      @@edpaintsminis I weirdly had luck with an Eldar Pirate Hero with a sword (to parry) and a Conversion Field which managed to flash and blind most of the gaunts and genestealers he was fighting - for a turn or two anyway. He fell under a large swarm shortly after.

    • @maddlarkin
      @maddlarkin Год назад

      Nid's were still plenty deadly in 4th when they got that revamped codex with all the extra bio-mutations, which was when I mostly fought them, I generally ran a Mechanised infantry army at the time and even though it was almost tailor made for dealing with 'nids (by happy accident as I made the base list during the 13th Black Crusade campaign for mowing down lost and the damed armies) it could be very very close run, literally ended a battle once with only a close combat Carnifex 2" out of charge range chasing the sole remaining Russ of my army round the table, they spent 3 turns chasing each other round the board unable to damage each other b4 the GW staff told us to call it a draw and get off the table.
      I think 2nd Ed Guard would of done a lot better against 'Nids of their era than later incarnations, you expect to lose close combat as Guard (well except against Tau) but the ability to split heavy weapons off teams off squads and the sheer amount of strength 8(?) large blast templates you could throw at the swarm, not just from the pliminary barrage but via comm-link I think you could mop up a 'Nid army (especially if my memory about dropping all that fire into close combat is correct) efficiently, though any survivours in close would be deadly. It's a match up I'd love to see or try some day

    • @dyansis
      @dyansis Год назад

      i agree with the "all things" being a detriment to the fun in some ways. I remember either Chambers of Johnson when asked about the lack of super fast transports for the Eldar was to answer "cos the Dark Eldar have them"

    Loving all the content on classic Warhammer! Honestly, the more I hear about 2nd Edition, the more I feel super conflicted. On the one hand, the lore, minis, and general wackiness of the rules sounds super fun, but on the other hand, I can't get over the use of I-go-you-go turn order.
    Even going by the standard of 90's boardgames, games like BattleTech (a fantastic game that I highly recommend checking out if you love classic rulesets and charmingly goofy old models) had split phases and simultaneous combat, so that everyone got to move before there was any combat, and once combat began everyone got a chance to shoot, even if they blew up.
    Meanwhile, I-go-you-go generally gives a pretty big advantage to whichever player starts first, since they can kill lots of enemies by shooting while at maximum power, meaning Player 2 is essentially fighting an uphill battle to try and fight through the enemy.
    I know it's not a dealbreaker for everyone, and some folks enjoy the challenge it gives, but all the same. It'd be nice if there was a version of 2nd Edition style Warhammer that had a more balanced initiative system.

    • @edpaintsminis
      @edpaintsminis  Год назад +1

      I think if you're not keen on 'I go you go' then caution is advised! Shooting is deadly in 2nd, but there is loads that can be done to protect yourself if you plan ahead and know how. Troops can 'hide' effectively making them invisible and I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong!) You can set them up in this way.
      Cover deducts from shooting rather than adding armour like in later editions, so even heavy weapons with a targeter hitting on 2+ will have to roll 4/5+ if you make careful use of terrain, as the more terrain features you shoot over the more it stacks!
      It's a really fun game but there are restrictions players should place on themselves before diving in. The most common is throwing out vortex grenades and the virus strategy card. I think veterans like to restrict heroes, psychic mastery levels and to limit Wargear cards to a total of 50pts per side. Sound reasoning and prevents people exploiting a game that wasn't really tested much!

When got a nid army that changed! the 'Stealers would haul it down one side of the board with the most cover, ideally woodland as they were still fast with difficult terrain. Interesting story, that. It was part of an effort to develop a 40k movie in the '90s. As per the Lexicanum wiki site:
      "In 1996, for the 25th Anniversary Games Day, Games Workshop released (for limited sale) a short movie entitled Inquisitor. This movie was created using clips and footage that had been created as a pitch to Games Workshop for a movie deal. There were also trailers for two other films, Hive Infestation and Blood for the Blood God."

      @@arandomlostsoul753 To add to this: the shorts were made by the, now defunct, Bright Light Studios; the same company that created the FMV cutscenes for the games "Epic 40,000 Final Liberation" and "Realms of the Haunting". They also worked on a cancelled Dark Angels squad-based fps game called "Dark Crusaders". Additionally, some of their props appear on the covers of a few issues of Citadel Journal - specifically #24, #31 and #34.

      Cool! I knew bits and pieces of this but never heard of 'Dark Crusaders'. That would've been cool!

      @@edpaintsminis There is actually gameplay of it on RUclips because a few years ago one of the developers released a playable beta build of the game.
