I could see this model winning a golden demon back in the day. The old style models give me so much nostalgia, the hobby has grown so much but I'm glad the 'original' styles can still make it through. Quality as usual Dunc!
This is literally how I'm still painting my Blood Angels. Doesn't matter if it was my old 2nd ed models or the one from the Indomitus box... the Sons of Sanguinius have never looked better!
Theres a paint company called coat d'armes (spelt that wrong most likely) that are based on the old paints from back then. Good to see you dont look as tired Duncan ^^
Duncan, I have to say, I wouldn't be in Warhammer if it wasn't for you. Your painting videos are so helpful and welcoming that I just have to say thanks for all that you've done. I hope you stay safe and are doing well this holiday season
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA You have a very positive effect on people's confidence after watching how you paint. You're like the Bob Ross of mini-painting to me (you gave me the confidence to attempt getting back into 40k minis after 20 years!)
I remember when I first got into the hobby some years ago, Duncans Blood Angel Tactical Marine video was the first painting one I ever saw and it helped me through my first miniatures
Same most of my army is painted with a dry brush and all over wash. I'm starting a chaos army this christmas and they will be painted parade ready (i practiced harder techniques on a few models mainly my assault intercessors)
I only was around for 3rd edition 40k, but I still so very fondly remember the then 2nd edition almost-technicolor paint schemes. For my child mind, it was the very height of miniature artistry (and technically GW being the only source I knew of at the time anyways).
This was brilliant to watch. Keep these old ones coming. I didn't know warboss green was so close a colour to Goblin Green. Now I can add to mr original 2nd Edition Dark Angels!!
Truth be told, we completely forgot about the Coat d'Arms paint line and only remembered afterward 😂 Saying that though, we also wanted people you have a current Citadel Range to be able to follow along. BUT next time.....
WOW ... that video brought back memories. I remember my friend giving me an old biscuit tin full of miniatures back in the early 90's ( Bloodbowl - Hero Quest - Warhammer etc ) The 1st mini I painted was a Space Marine in blue. I was hooked from that moment ... I'm thinking of painting again & this channel has really ignited my interest in doing just that! Huge Thanks Duncan 👍🔥💀
LOVE this. The classic models are so much more fun to me. I really get annoyed with how spindly and fragile part of the new models are. These are just awesome. Please do more, Duncan!
Duncan, I have to say that without you I would not have the passion for the hobby I have now, back in your days of GW tutorials I followed your salamanders scheme and it was easy enough to for me and challenging enough for me to learn. My dad and I apparently went to see you as you two are friends I think, this was before I got into the hobby and I would love to meet you again and thank you in person 😀
Dante was always the model I would stare at the most in the “Angels of Death” codex for 2nd edition. My young brain would frazzle trying to understand how that model was painted. I know, now, it was painted in yellow… but even with today’s modern paints I still have a soft spot for that model being painted in yellow versus gold. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video, that is 1992 'Eavy Metal standard!!! I have been trying to get the Blood Angels Orange recipe correct for years. If this video was around in '92 my 16 year old self would have watched that VHS tape over and over again!
That was great! I have to admit that the color scheme is really bright but it still looks good. I really enjoyed watching this and I hope you will do these older minis again. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this.
I stopped playing 40k back in the early 2000s, but found myself getting interested in the hobby again recently. I never thought they were that bright at the time but it looks like they were!
I first got into 40k with second edition in early 1998. I started painting my Marines as blood angels, GW sold a paint called “Blood Angels Red” which basically turned my Marines orange... being young and stupid I had no idea what I was doing.. no undercoat, using crappy brushes, just painting over gray plastic. Such a disaster.. thanks for bringing me back Duncan
I had about 6 squads of these 2nd edition marines painted in various chapters .. to hear them called retro or classic does make me feel old now lol . Great video
magic. I like the new minis and color scheme way better, but this was a good fun diversion. It really shows how far the mini design/sculpting has come since back then, too.
I remember sitting there as a 10 year old in the mid 90s holding one of these exact marines, trying to paint it in Blood Angels colours, with absolutely no idea what I was doing and an absolutely horrendous result. Amazing video, I wish I could send it back to my 10yo self.
Now i feel old watching this video. Well, in fact i am old, but not too old to learn how to paint. Might reach Duncans Level when i am 60 but its still 20 years to go. So grab those brushes, shake that paints and get started. Thanks Duncan, stay safe these days.
A blood angel like that was the miniature that got me into 40k back in 2000. Someone at school had the little pamphlet with all the different chapters in it. I took one look and had to know more.
I started roughly the same as you in ‘96 and BA were my first army. Seeing this vid has brought back so many memories I’m really tempted to paint a Primaris BA like this. Watching your videos during theses troubling times has inspired me to push and improve my painting even after so long. :)
This was so great, and I actually think the older paint schemes look better on the tabletop. Also the tips about brush control and prepping paint consistency for edge highlighting was really useful.
I really wish we had videos like these 20 years ago. I got the 40k starter in 2004, one extra combat squad and tactical squad, a chaplain with skull mask and terminator squad. i still haven't finished them 20 years later, because i've never been happy with the painting. I got seriously into painting almost 15 years ago now... and i'm sad to see classic marines replaced by those "primaris", and the classic dreadnought is gone, so i've to look for one on the second hand market...
I just recently started getting back into the oldhammer models. Trying to make a display of Blood Angels and Black Legion duking it out. So this video really hits lol! Love the video! More oldhammer please!
Duncan and Roger, thank you so much for this video! You put it up the day before my vacation, the vacation where I have planned to begin painting my Primaris army of Blood Angels!
This takes me right back to my childhood. Dear God Duncan, what're you doing to me!? I'm going to have to check the parents' loft when I next go home, to see if my original Imperial Army soldiers are still there.
@@emile1365 - I do draw the line at the Goblin Green and flock bases, though. I don't think my Primaris will tiptoe through the tulips or fresh, verdant fields.

Cheers for this Duncan - just picked up a complete 2nd edition box and wanted to get the Marines as close to that old Blood Angels feel as possible. I'll be sure to thin my paints this time, unlike in the mid 90s!
Just got into the hobby months ago through the start collecting blood angels box! They're my favorite chapter so this video really helps my appreciation of them!
Thanks for the time trip, this was a lot of fun. I wasn't into games that needed art at the time, but have several friends that will get a kick out of this.
Oh if this series continues it'll be the perfect time, because i'm currently stripping the paint of some retro minis and I want to give them old school ultramarine colours!
This video is blessed any model paintied in this fashion should have +1 to it's armour save for no extra points cost, On a slightly more serious note i once heard a tip that has never left me since from a blood angels player that if you want a really saturated punchy red you paint it pink first either by priming white then pink undercoat or prime it pink. It deffinately worked because his army was beautiful ( and very bright red ) Apparently eavy metal guys back in the day also used to do red ink glaze over the entire thing to make up for the lack of opacity of the paints of the time which honestly still looks quite pleasing even over newer better covering paints.
I'm waiting for the "special edition" of this video where Duncan tracks down the Coat D'Arms paints that match the old GW paints and paints a 2 Ed. Blood Angel with those. Make it truly old school. Yes, you still can get them, it just is a hassle. Also... who remembers when GW first introduced their spray cans. They were released to help paint the big 4 chapters. Ultras, Wolves and Dark Angels were fine. Blood angels though got "Blood Angel Red" in a can which was actually orange. Like, the first edge highlight orange. They were setting you up to fail if you thought you could basecoat with the spray.
I love the brighter Blood Angel color scheme, so this is going to help me paint my own minis. The bright, eye catching red suits them so much better than the blood red shades. Blood Angels should be gleaming in the sun!
i sincerely hope this becomes an ongoing thing, seeing retro colors even on modern minis is wondeful.
Some retro imperial guard would blow my mind
I concur!
Yes
Yes more of this!
I would be really interested in the opposite too- using modern color schemes on retro models.
I love a retro ultramarine paint scheme on the primaris. Actually looks cool.
I remember having this VHS back in the early 90s! Never thought I'd see it again
It's a rarity this one.... 😊
Please be kind, and rewind!
Supply was incredibly limited since The Time Machine they used to get the future materials was very expensive to rent
Just nice to see the old mouth breather helmets, I can't stand the primaris waffle face helms
