- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Founded in 1922, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions, recognized internationally as an outstanding orchestra. To open TEDxToronto 2014, the TSO gave a surprise performance of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. The snare drum sets the piece in motion; against the rhythmic foundation it taps out continuously, the main theme is first played, very quietly, by a flute, then gradually, every type of orchestral instrument joins in with the theme in turn. The ensemble steadily increases in sound and size as the piece progresses, until all members of the orchestra are playing, reaching full volume at the piece’s climax. As a musical representation of this conference’s theme, Boléro brings to mind an evolving entity of many parts working together in steady-though relentless-pursuit of a single goal.
Founded in 1922, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions, recognized internationally as an outstanding orchestra. Music Director Peter Oundjian leads the TSO with a commitment to innovative programming and audience development through a broad range of performances that showcase the exceptional talents of the Orchestra along with a roster of distinguished guest artists and conductors. The TSO also serves the larger community with TSOUNDCHECK, the original under-35 ticket programme; the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra; and music education programmes that reach over 50,000 students each year.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
How on Earth did the filmmaker manage to let the entire oboe d'amore solo go by without once showing the soloist! The instrument is not rare enough for them?
Tragic 💔
GLORIOUS CHAD chin at 4:12

💀. 👀
have always loved Bolero!
Such a beautiful piece
Excellently done ,for those who don't know ,there is just over five thousand drum beats to this piece
SUCH A BANGER LIKE FIRE ME UP FOR THIS RAVE
Love it,soothingly...
Ravel's Bolero! Speaks to me it really does because of the "flowing consistent rhythm" and how the music progresses louder, then softer then louder again! TSO a great Symphony! Have seen them perform once3 !
The beauty of repetition at it's finest. I saw this live from another orchestra that my teacher plays in!
👏🏼
this is beautiful
Love it!
Great rendition of Bolero and wasn't the drummer relishing his fifteen minutes of fame. terrific
Meraviglioso
Great trombone solo!
When I am old enough I want to become part of this orchestra
me too
Lyn Lyn me three
Probably 18, but you’d need a degree from a music school probably also sorry for the late reply lmao
hi how come there isn't a conductor for this song I just noticed it
Jamie boyko
The snare drum keeps the time in the whole piece. The snare drum is pretty much the conductor in this case
@@daincarandang7603 there are 4050 snare drum beats to Bolero
@@mikebarkett8401 did you do have the district honor to count ? 👍🏻
@@emjay2045 no,I read the story on this music
أداء ممتاز وخيالي، بوركتم. اخراج لم يرضيني،
Astoundingly beautiful performance but must they look so grim? I think an important evolutionary step in orchestral performance - certainly for our age - would be to train the musicians in appropriate facial expression in alignment with the music they are playing. Toronto could be the starting point of that and who knows?
It's probably because they're so focused.
So basically you can't enjoy music if people dont make faces?
perhaps the answer to xzyeee and Justin Chiu,is that the musicians are scared of expressing their feelings, knowing that even a first class performer such as Valentina Lisitsa can be banned from playing with this orchestra for being a dissident.

Grade 10's out there say hi! Lol
hummmm.......so the more focussed you are the more grim you should look..lol
+xzyeee `I agree
the video has lost it
Lâche les baguettes pépé !

So many players that should have been recognized rather than overfilming the old guy repetitiously playing snare... and playing the easiest part at that ...BORING!
It is not that easy though. You must not mess up, and you must also keep the same tempo and increase the dynamic gradually.
The easiest???? LoL . Is not!!!
