- In this illuminating talk, high school mathematics teacher and RUclips star Eddie Woo shares his passion for mathematics, declaring that "mathematics is a sense, just like sight and touch" and one we can all embrace. Using surprising examples of geometry, he encourages everyone to seek out the patterns around us, for "a whole new way to see the world". A public high school teacher for more than 10 years, Eddie Woo gained international attention when he posted videos of his classroom lessons online, to assist an ill student. His RUclips channel, WooTube, has more than 200,000 subscribers and over 13 million views.
Eddie believe that mathematics can be embraced and even enjoyed by absolutely everybody. He was named Australia's Local Hero and was a Top 10 Finalist in the Global Teacher Prize for his love of teaching mathematics. This dude single handedly made me want to study math and consider it a passion rather than a chore. Thanks to him in a couple of years I’ll be graduating in CS, something that may seem “average” for most people but for me is my greatest achievements so far.

He made me realized how bad my Maths teachers were during my schooling days....
If taught not really understanding how significant or fun something can be, just taught with a text book , your most likely gonna hate it. Like most people I used to hate learning languages because in school they're taught in such a in effective, boring way with text books but languages is one of my passions even though I don't enjoy maths, that's because although our bodies might be made to understand or do things. We're all crafted differently to enjoy different things if that be construction, cooking, maths, languages, sports, music, or an art.

There's something phenomenal about learning a subject from someone who is so very passionate about the subject that they teach.

A lot of talks doesn't aprecciate that approach of "I'm not gonna say that X can be better if Y happens, I'm gonna explain the problems, and show a pratical solution", it's show don't tell.
He explained that people isn't interested in mathematics because it 'feels like' forced chores, but instead of complaining and saying "we need nice teachers like i am, be like me" he showed that we needed passionated instructors to properly love it by being one and doing a small exercize in a cheerful and enjoyable way.

I failed maths in high school and was held back for a year, so I swore to hate it forever and now here comes this man making me want to dig up my maths manuals and start doing exercises for the fun of it. I adore him.
The best one is Schaum's "Advanced Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists" - it's a 1970s school book with loads of solved examples, that starts simple with counting and goes up to major subjects like vector calculus.

@@lyrimetacurl0 my God.. That's my favourite math book back in college! It looks scary at first coz it's very thick but the notes and example are easy to follow.. I didn't do well in math for my diploma infact flunk it a few semesters and had to repeat but i swear i will get revenge on it one day.. His speech is very catchy because he brilliantly learned and applied how to deliver a perfect speech, using descriptive words words, smooth transitions, example from a real life and pinch of humour. He is a brilliant math teacher and an astonishing speech artist.
I would’ve gone so far as to show the super clusters and filaments of the universe in contrast to the blood vessels.

I went to church and youth group with Eddie Woo. He was the same at 15 and he's the same now. Always been a passionate, lovely, God-fearing guy.

If somebody says "my god doesn't like heretics" and kills others for that reason, I wouldn't say that's honourable. That person might be god-fearing tho (And that situation has happened in almost if not all religions).

@Rickie j While I respect the differences in our thoughts and opinions, in this case, what YOU think of who God is and what it means to "fear God" is irrelevant to the merit of the original comment, nor does it matter to EDDIE himself. HE is a God-fearing man (according to the commenter), whether you want him to or not. The true meaning of "God-fearing" is complicated often misunderstood (as you just described) outside of faith circles but it is perfectly well understood among believers. If you respect Eddie's gift and passion, have the decency to also respect his faith.

I literally took mathematics as my optional subject in my High school even after being terrible at it, just to give it a try after watching this video! And in my term 1 result i scored 39/40 and wish to even study it further. You have changed so much of my life Eddie woo, it's crazy.

Well in my case i did terrible and took humanities but after seeing this video I now started studying maths independently just for fun and now im confident to take admission in a data science course. Our mind is absolutely limitless.

9:31 I actually teared up hearing this. I’ve always believed to be incapable of learning maths, I’ve always called myself a “none mathematic person”. I shall no longer limit myself with that belief.
I have a fear of maths. My palms could create pools of sweat whenever I encounter numbers; be it in a classroom, a grocery store, in front of my computer, and just about everywhere. Now I'm in my first week of University taking engineering, and Calculus intimidates me an awful lot, more so that I have little to no background knowledge left on areas that are needed for me to understand it. And as much as I think deeply of other fields I could excel at, I want to believe that I can stop my palms from sweating over the very things I always ran away from. Thank you for this Ted Talk, Mr. Woo!

I once heard a similar argument to this.. and it related exactly to the idea that math is an inate sense.
The argument was that most people, especially any athlete that plays ball sports, intuitively knows geometry and calculus, even if they dont know it. And the argument is that when you see a baseball hit off of the bat, your brain immediately starts calculating its initial velocity and throughout the flight of the ball, you are recalculating the same equation over and over again to predict, with a very high degree of accuracy, the place where that ball will land.
And you can do all of these calculations subconsciously, while simultaneously accounting for variables like wind, sun and the fact that your only means of measurement (your eyes) are moving, bouncing as you run, and also taking stock of potential dangers, like other players, the outfield wall, or anything you might trip over.
Now you could apply this to any ball sport, racket sport or racing. Our brain is a phenomenally complex and beautiful computer capabale of astounding things.
Honestly, I think things like that rely on reproduction. Sports players have seen the trajectory of the ball so many times in so many different situations that the brain gets used to it following a certain path.
Yung Dani I've always been good at catching balls, ever since I was a kid, despite not doing repetition training. While people certainly get better as they do things, that's just obvious.
It's about predicting the trajectory and having good kinetic vision. The more you do it, the more you start to notice patterns. The more you see those patterns, the better you understand them.
No skill is different.

While it is possible that your genetics gave you the oppertunity to be better at catching balls, it does not even matter that much. I don't know you but you probably believe you've always been better than other people at catching balls because somebody (like your dad) has told you so in your childhood. Or you could not find a lot of skills you were good at so the human likes to praise itself with something.
The Idea of being good at sports in correlation to being good in mathematics/physics to me seems like a weird one. Otherwise all topsporters would be high-functioning physisists as well right ;) well.. the opposite seems to be true.
Yung Dani, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. While it's true that I believe that I've been better than others at catching balls than others, that's because that's simply what was shown through making comparisons with others. I've barely gotten compliments, so that's completely off, and none of which have been in relation to catching things. In fact, my dad didn't even know my catching ability until couple of years ago. As for if there are no other skills I'm good at, there are plenty that I'm good at. In fact, things that require me to make many precise movements at the same time are what I'm the worst at. Most other things I can do fairly well. Of course, it's not that I can't learn something that requires many precise movements at the same time, it's just that it takes a longer time to learn. It's a worse aptitude, not inability.
As for your laughable comparison, the reason why they aren't both has to do with time spent doing something. Not their aptitude. Your aptitude toward something can be extremely high, that is to say a genius. However, if you don't nurture that ability, your genius doesn't matter. So assuming they had spent the same amount of time studying physics, who's to say that they couldn't be top physicists?
As or me, I have a high aptitude toward a lot of things, not on a genius level however, but I've never had the motivation nor will to actually get better at one particular skill. In fact, one of my better skills would be my English, which is my second language.
Oh, and regarding aptitude, I don't believe that I'm somehow special. I know my strengths and weaknesses well, and I don't believe anyone else is different in that sense. The difference is where our aptitudes lie. There are obviously some who will be underperformers and outperformers, but I believe that I'd at best be on the high end of the average part of the spectrum.
Math sounds a bit broad, but the truth is we have dozens of senses beyond the basic 5, such as the sense of distance, weight, heat, balance, color, kinesthetic, chemo, gas, danger, etc.
Most people refer to it as instinct, but they are in fact our hidden senses.
I watched his videos that made me understand " e" and logs. Changed my perspective about maths.

This man has saved me from Failing my Boards Mathematics Exam. HUGE RESPECT FOR HIM FROM INDIA.
Now I realise how he can so perfectly explain the most complex math phenomenons so easily. He is a great storyteller. He is great at making up a story and explaining it in a "fun" sort of way. I'm glad that he turned to maths. No doubt he would've been a great writer/English teacher. But in maths he has literally become a legend!

Watching his videos, it's so easy to forget Eddie Woo didn't start out in maths.
He approaches his classroom lectures with such enthusiasm, and brings that out in his students, that you'd think he'd been born for the job.
But as he points out here, and as I've long maintained, maths isn't something that only some people can do. It's something that a lot of people have been scared away from, but the appreciation of the subject, the understanding of mathematical ideas beyond mere rote number crunching, is something anyone can learn.
What a captivating talk... never ever thought of maths the way Mr Woo percieved it!!! Right now I am feeling a deep sadness and regret knowing I missed my chances in life due to my bad mathematic teachers. The world needs more teachers like Mr Woo.

Sal Kahn is boring. It's healthier to be in school around other people than looking at a computer screen. But schools need to be more flexible. Maybe they're not for everyone.

@@beanyys1158 Yes, I have "saw" a lot of them. I was watching them a lot for awhile about 7 years ago. But the endless nature of it all bothered me; it seemed addictive in an unhealthy way. If it was your only access to information, it would be alright, though. You're free to like it! This Woo guy seems more alive, though.

I hate it when people see maths as a school subject, and when they fail, they hate it. It's an awesome tool for almost every kind of purpose, mostly that you don't know you would use.

Eddie's RUclips videos helped me get my daughter from failing math to an A, and I am sure many others, champion human being.
Math is the language that connects us with our Universal Creator. Every number, formula, theorem, etc. is the vocabulary and grammar point of such language.
I started to love Math after i got out of School.
For some reason, my Math teachers were just horrible, they made me hate Math to the core.
But, on RUclips, i would see random videos about Math, Science, Physics, and then, i began to wonder how does this work, how does that work, why does it work, etc.., and those questions all lead to Mathematics.
It turns out, without Math, we would be living in the stone age.
And then, i began to love Math, i saw what some of the Equations mean, where they come from, i really love the Math channel 3Blue1Brown btw.
I am now back to learning Math, on my own, and its so much fun when you understand why something is the way it is.
Same, man. I'm currently dropped out of college, looking for a job, while learning Math on my own in my free time. I found wonders from this subject which I didn't back in high school, where I even hated the way they teach it: all the same rigorous and boring memorizing.
That's basically how I wound up here :)

Whereas for me, for over 55 years, maths has been something I don't understand and that triggers a feeling of a kind of cold horror.
For the last 30 years I've tried to understand a little: no pressure, just a kind of curiosity. But that has got me nowhere. That's why I listen to people like Mr (or Dr?) Woo, in the hope that they might be of some help. I've also seen websites and bought books. Friends have tried to help sometimes.
But it's been in vain up to now.

As a 15 year old these type of things are beginning to make my perspective of seeing things clear, I don't why people aren't showing these things to us , If I ask 'why' For some question then most of the people say thats just how it is , it's great that internet is providing the answers that noone does but unfortunately people are busy watching series instead of these.

I've followed and watched his classroom math vids for many years now, and I'm happy for Eddie Woo. The audience loved him. RUclipsrs loved his speech. I loved it, too. It was just superb and inspiring and very articulate and eloquent in ways with all the references to math being a sense, comparative geometry, and his overall enthusiasm is genuine.

Eddie is such a legend. I am 40 year old and is still a student of his as I keep watching his lectures online. I even feel now I have just begun learning Math because of his wonderful approach.
