We'd be sitting in a lesso , hear a loud bang and everyone knew it was Szydlo. Not sure if he still teaches there but he was definitely one of the most loved teachers. He used to call everyone "old boy". He wasn't actually the best teacher but it's not hard to see why, he was so excited by what he was teaching he often strayed from the syllabus.

Of all the MANY TED TALKS I have watched this British gentleman chemist has ABSOLUTELY fascinated me not only with his chemistry demonstrations but with his high energy output, his ability to multitask, his mannerisms, Brit vernacular, and all I was able to absorb in less than 16 minutes. Plus the topic was not that of dealing with death, disease, violence or anything negative.
I want to get a quart of liquid nitrogen. Shouldn't be too difficult as it's not a controlled substance, doesn't seem to be a component of anything illegal or immoral. First use would be re: flash freezing perishable food. Then on to replicating one or two things done with this OUTSTANDING video using safety glasses, gloves and a friend to video the endeavour.
Again; this TED TALK was the best.

Side note: I had the same thought just before reading your comment. It would be amazing having teachers like him, and really learning in friendly and exciting ways. It’s a shame our education systems do not aim to make us interested in learning, but to the exact opposite thing.

There are a couple problems. Without a really well equipped lab no principal would allow an open flame on the scale of burning metal/oxidizer mix that are flash powders, and igniting explosive or even flammable gasses in a balloon.his (and mine) favourite part of the show would not be allowed at most schools. You'll have to make due with a small piece of sodium in water.

@@cbernier3 While I am much older and took chemistry many years ago- my five kids got nothing as charming and interesting as this presentation. Chemistry was taught with such a focus on abstractions and presented with such boredom that there is little wonder that no one wanted to pursue it. I had a math prof for master's stats who helped me understand that it all applied to the real world. I got an A even though I had believed that I was not good at math.
I now believe that our very finest teachers should be teaching at earlier stages than university. What I remember of my high school chemistry is that my teacher drowned when his car went into a canal after an accident and the electrics failed so that he could not get out. His replacement was a sour puss.

Crazy how brilliant minds work, it's like his head was full of so many ideas and he couldn't pace himself to explain his ideas he just did them and commented over his actions which is a neat way to keep the audience focused, every second that passed you asked yourself, what is next? I love how he breaks down the process and yet a few people who watch this video still maybe confused but those who've already taken chemistry, you think the explanations to why is so rudimentary or basic.
