    Anyone of a certain age, who has any taste in music, will have the greatest love and respect for John peel.

    In an age in which most people already had a colour TV, we were glued to the radio waiting for those pearls: Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Tubeway Army, Cocteau Twins, Birthday Party, 1919 that defined an era, indeed my youth. One of a very rare breed of people - people who genuinely care about what they do. We wanted to send in a demo, but we never did - I guess because we were in awe, because being played on the Peel Show carried more weight and prestige than 1000 gigs. Everybody who listened to the show knew - if it was on the show, it was because John Peel wanted it played. I made some fantastic discoveries that became the soundtrack of my life. Cheers John!

    Always ahead of everyone. Best ever radio show ever never knew what to expect. What other dj would dream of playing beefheart followed by a cajun swamp waltz. Legend

    The king of all music with zero interest in sitting on the throne. One of the rare occasions I was listening to Radio 1, and it was the day he died. Sickened to the stomach. What a legend.

    Its sad because he died when i was 14 and i just was starting to reach that typical teenage music lover who listend to music at school and all we talked about was music. He died when just before i reached that age i just missed out on him, i wish he was aroundas i reached that age. R.I.P

    I used to catch John late nights in my teens in the 1980s. He rarely played music I liked but at least I knew what I was talking about when friends were talking about music in the playground.

    The greatest...always...shouldn't bring this is in ...but I loved Mark and Lard followed by John...loved John's calmness of tone after Mark and Lard...but irrespective of what went before John became more important to me...Radcliffe and Lard vanished but John's show quickly became apparent...the most important thing on the radio... I bought a Death Metal cd because of what I heard on John's show...disastrous purchase...but I never held it against him because his show helped me so much. I miss him.

    There are people like John Peel on the radio or the digital internet. For example on BBC Radio 6, you have Tom Ravenscroft (John Peel's son) who plays alot of unsigned bands. Then there is John Kennedy on XFM London, which is available to anyone with an internet connection, where he also plays alot of unsigned stuff as well.

    • @JohnPeel3904
      @JohnPeel3904  3 года назад

      True but they don't play much variety compared to Peel. Have you ever heard Tom Ravenscroft or John Kennedy playing grindcore music (Napalm Death, etc...) or gabba music (extreme hardcore dance music) ? None is the answer. That's the difference between them and Peel.

    Peel was the best. How do great bands get discovered now?

  • @chrisst8922
    @chrisst8922 5 лет назад

    I have that Misty In Roots LP, live at The Counter Eurovision festival. In those days the song contest was so despised that they actually had a festival on in Brussels in the same city and at the same time to protest about it.
    Now there's so little music that it's somehow become mainstream. A mainstream joke.

    She's not Irish, she is English. Her name is Jo Whiley. She's also a radio broadcaster.

    never thought of it that way but it's true; he's the only bloke who could have gained mutual respect from acts similar to both Rod Stewart and ThE SeX PiStOLs alike despite their incompatible differences.

    For mostly slightly out of kilter listeners. Felt like he was in the room with ye. Huge huge loss.

  • @colemartinst123
    @colemartinst123 12 лет назад

    Yeah. I think that was the point though, you didnt have to like everything he played, he just invited you to listen and just enjoy the things he liked and you make your own judgments, he didnt tell you to like. Nowadays alot of bands dont get discoverd, signed or unsigned you can send a demo to him and he would either play it on his show or not but he would never turn down the chance to listen to it. We havent got any one like that anymore, and we need someone like him to do that again.
