I would love to see a “best CPU for emulation without a gpu” video! You always have so good insight. As a fan of SSF emulation PCs, I would love to hear your opinion. Both in performance and “bang for your buck”.
When it comes to just 1080p stuff, I'm still a fan of the previous build a few months back. The 3060/Ryzen 7 5000/16GB RAM PC. It was a little extra for just 1080p gaming and emulation, but really I don't see much fault with that. Especially when the 3050TI's kind of lacking by comparison. But hey, it's enough room to game while getting other things done.

I do like the progression that AMD has achieved going from one generation to the other. For example: FX-8100 CPU, HD 7970+ GPU FX-8370 CPU, R9 290 GPU r7-1700 CPU, RX 590 GPU r7-2700X CPU, Vega 56 GPU r7-3700X CPU, RX 5700XT GPU r7-5800X CPU, RX 6800 GPU r9-5950X CPU, RX 6900XT GPU That was Team Red, as opposed to the more mainstream Team Blue-Green which consists of expensive Intel CPU and expensive Nvidia GPU: i5-2500k, GTX 680 i7-3770k, GTX 980 i7-6700k, GTX 1080 i7-8700k, GTX 1080Ti i9-9900k, RTX 2080Ti i7-12700k, RTX 3080 i9-12900k, RTX 3090
The R5 2600X is still great for the most part, but it could very well be worth upgrading to the R5 5600 for $200 when that launches next month. Zen 3 is a big upgrade, and even a 2060 will see better performance in some titles.
I think I'll wait for a rdna 3 desktop apu so I'll have something to fall back on if my GPU dies. It is worth the performance hit to have that added level of insurance. It sucks when the GPU has problems, I've had to send in two under warranty over the years.
or just have a $50 fallback gpu. it will be better and cheaper than buying an apu. apus are good if you want a cheaper, smaller, more silent and less power draw build and you wont buy a gpu at all.
A little less than a year ago, I watched a video of yours that suggested purchasing a pre-built Ryzen 5 3500 / 8 GB / 1650 Super, so I did, and for 1080p gaming, I agree, it's fine. Even play some RPCS3 titles and it's okay there too. The little machine allows for upgrade of CPU / RAM / Video (limited on the proprietary PSU) and for $600 new, I think it was worth it for my usage. Not high-end but no slouch either. Thank you for your recommendations ETA, highly respected.
What do you mean good luck with the keys? So this is one of those shady sites where keys you buy can wind up deactivated. Might wanna disclose that as a possibility when talking up these kinda sites.
I think these types of sites are fly by night. Best to activate your purchase as soon as it is confirmed, before the site goes offline. I have used a different one with PayPal, and while my keys did activate I doubt it’s the normal experience for everyone. The real test comes after 180 days when Windows phones home to a Microsoft server for authentication.
I think this is the first video that has ever said a program was hitting a cpu hard based only on its power draw. The cpu is drawing 80 watts but only 6% of the cpu is in use.
OK but really, how much of an improvement is it over the 12700K? I'd imagine they're so close that the i7 makes more sense than the i9, especially when it comes to heat/ keeping the i9 cool
Its hard to tell because most of the ppl who upload emulation content are using 12900K. It could be the additional Cache that helps it boost past the 12700K in emulation. I also think the 12900K can clock higher, You can get 5.2ghz on 360mm AIO.
I'm in the process of getting a new PC with an i9-12900K. I have the CPU itself. I just need to get the other parts now. The only thing I'm not upgrading is the GPU due to the scalping and crypto situation right now. I'm sticking with my old GTX 1060 6GB card, which should be more than enough for 1080p emulation, even for RPCS3. The CPU will take care of everything else.
Hey, don’t push resolution scale past 200%. That will slow down RSX emulation. Having the game run at higher res actually slows down the whole emulation regardless of how good your GPU is. PS3 games are best kept 1440p and under if they are heavy ones. I have some tests on my channel using 11700K OC 5ghz with avx512. Also 4080
Dont suppose you can retry the ps3 emu with avx512 enabled in the emulator(You will first have to go into bios, disable efficiency cores, and enable avx512) Apparently this can result in massive performance boost in some ps3 games.
This is true, but it's also important to note that Intel has started physically removing AVX512 from Alder Lake chips (as in, cutting out parts of the chips with a laser), and it is also only supported on some motherboards, with older BIOS revisions. It appears that Raptor Lake also has AVX512 disabled, so currently the only consumer hardware guaranteed to give you AVX512 is Rocket Lake, plus some mobile chips (but you probably shouldn't be running RPCS3 on a laptop, need more GHz). Supposedly Zen 4 will add AVX512 though, so at least it's not leaving consumer hardware completely. I hope that Intel will also release some P-cores-only chips in the future with AVX512 enabled.
Hi ETAPrime. Have been watching your channel for a while, I think the promotional content in this video really helps. I never knew I can get product keys at a discounted price! As always, thanks for everything.

I'm currently running an AMD 5900x/32gb RAM/3080ti setup that's working well for everything. I figure I'll skip the next gen and look into upgrading next year if there's anything significantly better. Performance increases the last decade have been so incremental my usual upgrade cadence has slowed down a lot.
I'm running practically the same rig, except I just have a 3080 non ti. This rig runs everything exceptionally well. Zen 4 honestly looks a little underwhelming anyways. Both of us should be good to go until Ryzen 8 or 9000.
After years trying and tinkering with my old build, I finally got my hands on an i7 10700kf and a 3080ti, boy oh boy, all my dreams came true lol Finally got to play mgs 4, couldn’t keep the 60 stable, but still run well, now I’m playing through tears of the kingdom, man emulation is life.
ETA Prime, buying stuff you can't afford... every single day =) The dude has a throne made of $1000+ graphics cards that I wouldn't even be surprised at this point
I'm curious how much the CPU factors into high-end emulation. I'd love to see a test with a RTX3050 (or higher) with previous gen CPUs. I'd also like to see the opposite side of the test where you use a GTX1650 with a i9-12900K since graphics cards are the wildcard purchase these days $$$.
It depends on how the emulation is done. With some emulators it makes all the difference. Even some 3d based systems are emulated almost entirely on the cpu out of necessity to the way the emulation and/or original system works, with the gpu making pretty much zero difference. Some will utilize the gpu more, especially those whose software is predominately using system apis and libraries rather than hitting the hardware directly, but these are seldom close to as accurate (even if onscreen result appear correct). I've written a few emulators, have contributed code to a few big name emulators and ported a few dozen to "alternative" OSes, so Im very well versed in this stuff and know the code of dozens (ergo, intimately familiar with where the load is placed, and why) Feel free to ask if you have any more specific, or technical questions.
@@beezle1976 I have a question. Pc games and emulators don't always use just one or two cores, but neither do they use all cores to 100%. How would a person know what the limiting factor is? Like for CPUs I mean. For a gpu it's only got one number. You can always tell the total utilization. But for CPUs it's much more confusing. So for example some games/emulators hammer 2 cores and only partially use the rest of them. But some games use all cores equally to about 40%. So how could a person tell when the cpu is holding them back? I'm never sure if I'd need more single core performance or more multi core.
@@beezle1976 what cpu or gpu combo would be needed to emulate ps4 and ps5 respectively, and is there an emulating system to emulated system power ratio rule, so that a system can actually emulate a system? Meaning does the emulating system have to be two times more powerful or how much ?

It wont make much of a difference when it comes to Emulation performance because Its not getting an IPC Boost. Its only Getting a Shit Ton of Cache. That doesn't really matter to Emulation that much. Emulation cares about IPC and Clock Speed so 58003d wont matter that much.

Thanks for another good and informative video! Have you tried out Rebel Strike in Dolphin? I hear that's perhaps the single most demanding (but still playable) game, and have been wondering what it takes to run full speed at 1080p and 4K. I suspect that i5-12400 or higher would do the job, probably the i3-12100 would also be enough, but I don't know if my Ryzen 5 5600G would be fast enough. Most of the people who have tested it on the Dolphin Wiki have reported poor performance, but none of the results use anything newer than an i7-7700K, and that tester paired it with an old GTX 670, probably not the best combination.
I currently have a i5-8600k and I've been thinking of swapping it for an i7. Can't decide if a 8700k or 9700k would be better, 9700k has better clocks speeds and 2 more physical cores but 8700k has 6 cores 12 threads. Hard to decide since extra threads seem important now in switch and PS3 emulation
The 8700k is certainly a good CPU but it can be difficult to cool because of the horrible stock thermal paste Intel used at the time. Now I delidded mine and dropped like 10-15C off my temps (not quite sure exactly as I did it a few years ago) if you're willing to do it then debaurer has the tools to do it, and the process is pretty straight forward as well with you just using your own paste. But if that's not for you then I would recommend the 9900k over the 9700k as it at least has hyperthreading.
@@thegamerboy1000 interesting, I do have a Noctua nh-d15. I've thought about a 9900k but I would have to find a pretty good deal on one cause they are going for a solid but more than an i7 and I'm not sure it's worth the premium at this point
I'm using a Ryzen 5 3600x combined with an EVGA GTX 1070 TI FTW2 Video Card. The next upgrade I am thinking about is going from my current 16GB 3200 memory to 16GB 4400 memory but I am able to emulate PS3 with no really issues in 1080p from the display port on my Video Card, which is what I wanted when I built the computer. This computer also doubles as my 4K HTPC from the actual HDMI port.
I'm rocking a Ryzen 7 5800x and the old gtx 1080. GPU is long over due a upgrade, but I'm content with sticking with it until prices are realistic. In my front room, for lighter stuff, including some cemu and most PS2 I've a hp mini pc with a i7 8700. Does ok for most.
Changing your windows hardware does not make your key stop working, it just requires you to revalidate the hardware; no "good luck" is required. What exactly are you advertising? (Ignoring that, if you're just doing hardware testing, you can just leave Windows unactivated a la LTT's 2018 video about Windows activation.)
Cpu market is amazing now. Will be interesting to see how amd new ryzen series(thats nearly here) will stack upto this chip and other intel. Will be interesting if you still have this same cpu, what amds new offering will compare to this. You should do a comparison when new ryzen series comes out, to see how emulation plays on there peak chip against this. Maybe do a series, on intel vs amd, at high end, middle range, and low end cpus in competition in terms of emulation. ^^ That would be interesting to see, but i know it would take alot of time and effort on your side, but your channel draws alot of emulation viewers. When amd releases its new ryzen series just coming, you should do a comparison in emulation, for both amd and intel high end cpus, then mid range cpus, and low end cpus, to see how both compete in emulation against each other. That should draw alot of viewers to your videos, as people who mainly watch your vids, are emulation lovers, and it would be a good guide for people, who have to decide which one to go for, depending on there budgets. Your channel should be big enough now, to do such a big comparison. Cheers, just a suggestion.
Still Rocking my 2700X for right now but, Plan on going to either Rocket Lake or Zen 4. If the Rumors are True and Zen 4 is giving us a 40 to 50% IPC Boost with 5.5Ghz Single Core Clock Speed. Thats gonna be a Monster for emulation. Even RPCS3 which leans more towards Intel will have way better performance on Ryzen. Just really looking forward to it.
I just started a build recently, an was considering the 3050 rtx but leaning more towards a 3060 rtx to pair with my Ryzen 7 5800x, was gonna try to get a 3070 or 3070ti but that's not happening until prices get lower so 3060ti rtx is probably a better option over the regular 3060, I know the 5800x is a better option over the R5 5600x so I'll see what happens with my build
Thanks for the guide. I'm building an arcade only build so this guide comes in handy, I was looking at Ryzen 5000 and Alder Lake. Another friend suggested Alder Lake like you did. Is an RTX 3070 or RX 6800 overkill? I do not want to throw away money but I wanted it to be relevant for a few years rendering the latest emulations with ease.
Arder lake is better for emulator as for gaming in general if you building you ring from scratch go for intel if you already have a amd board laying around go for ryzen
Hi ETA Prime! Now that you showed us the current best CPU for emulation, next should be the current best laptop for emulation too. Thanks for the video!
You're complaining that you can't maintain 60 FPS in some of these games; meanwhile my mind is being absolutely blown away as someone who hasn't followed the emulation scene in awhile. Last time I checked, PS3 emulators could *barely* run 2D side-scrollers! I didn't even know there was a working 360 emulator! Makes me even more hyped for my upcoming Ryzen 7700X build!
Your processor is only 15-30% and this is a very expensive processor. And what about the old Xeon V2? They are cheap and can work at a high frequency. Can you test different processors to find the most optimal between price and performance? It would be interesting to see.
As far as my personally tuned, high end emulation dedicated rig goes, Ryzen 5 5600x, RTX 3070, 32 GB of RAM, 2 TB NVMe SSD boot drive, 6 TB 7200 RPM HDD, B550M steel legend, and Corsair 750w XT with a cooler master Q300L. Solid 1440p machine for everything I throw at it. Emulate up to PS3 and Switch no problem.
I am running cheap used i5 4590 Dell with a GT1030, cost less than £170 (ex SSD), does up to and including some PS2 at up to 720p at max frame rate. This video confirms that the price/performance payoff simply isn't worth the massive extra cost of going for he high end CPU/GPU which for high end emulation. IMO if you wanna run 360, PS3 etc you're better off going with original hardware, even if you're someone who plays pirate games for free, actually buying the games will most likely work out less cost than the additional PC emulation hardware.
I have a few old HP Elitedesk 800 Mini PCs, one is a g2 with an i5-6600, the other is a g3 with an i7-7700, both suit my needs quite well since I don't try to run anything super high end on them.
geez the wattage is insane. I bought a second hand ryzen 3800x for 250 just to upgrade the 2400g that i had specially for rpcs3 and the max watt it pull in skate 3 was 110 watts. Constant 60 fps.
Currently my Ryzen 7 3800x, 1050ti 4gb, 16 GB 3200 RAM setup has been emulating everything up to the PS3 at full speed with no issues at 1080p. Some games struggle with 1440p on the PS3 emulator tho
I just ordered that ID-COOLING 226 CPU cooler! What do you think about it? Is it quiet with the 12900k? I'll be using mine with a 2700x in a gaming htpc.
Not emulating at the moment but have considered getting into it. Currently running a 5900X/3080. I imagine I'd be good to go for most emulation. If anything, I would probably just upscale to 1440, unless I were to move the PC to my OLED TV again.
My rig is an RTX 3080 Founder's Edition (10GB version, as the 12GB variant has no founder's edition), R9 5900X, and 32GB of DDR4 at 3200 CL16. It goes without saying that I'm very happy with my PC.
Are you optimistic about the 5800X3D? Do you think it could compete against a 12700K in emulation? If you ever get your hands on a 5800X3D I would love to see how Skate 3 and God of War 3 fare :) Kindest regards :) :)
Isn’t this kinda obvious, the best cpu is also one of the most expensive and one of intels flagships! I don’t think anyone is going to be worrying about emulation if they’ve got the 12900k as their probably gonna have a high end pc rig with a top of the line gpu to go along with it 🤷♂️

What do you mean good luck with the keys? So this is one of those shady sites where keys you buy can wind up deactivated. Might wanna disclose that as a possibility when talking up these kinda sites.
I thought that was an odd way to put it, also.

@@flameshana9 Not sure, but I just know there are plenty of reports of games, windows, MS office working at first then being deactivated later.
Awesome content. Thanks for letting us know.

My current emulation PC is an old Alienware Alpha R1. I7 4765T, GTX 860M, and 16 gb LPDDR3 1600.
For completeness, testing with a RTX3080 would eliminate the bottleneck in the CPU test.
I've written a few emulators, have contributed code to a few big name emulators and ported a few dozen to "alternative" OSes, so Im very well versed in this stuff and know the code of dozens (ergo, intimately familiar with where the load is placed, and why)
Feel free to ask if you have any more specific, or technical questions.

^^
That would be interesting to see, but i know it would take alot of time and effort on your side, but your channel draws alot of emulation viewers.

Your processor is only 15-30% and this is a very expensive processor. And what about the old Xeon V2? They are cheap and can work at a high frequency. Can you test different processors to find the most optimal between price and performance? It would be interesting to see.
