yes the 10mm wide angle will help, but if the rooms are not very well lit you're going to struggle with the f4.5 starting point. it will be tough for low lit rooms. you're going to have to blow up those noisy pixels with a very high iso. #tradeoffs

Thank you Toby. I Have ordered this Lens for my Canon 70D and intend to use it during summer vacation in Greece. Since my last message to you, i have purchased the Canon 70-200 IS II and i am so happy using it for Portrait and some landscape too. Your reviews are really amazing and full on crucial info, keep going..! Regards.
Great review I look forward to seeing the comparison with the 10-22 USM,, as far as the pics from the top of water tower I favored the 35mm shot...........
Thanks for the great review. I have also watched your comparison video with the Tokina and Canon 10-22mm lens. I would like your advice on something. I currently have a T3i (600D) with a 18-55mm IS, 55-250mm IS II and nifty fifty. I am thinking of upgrading my lens set up to get some better IQ. I am trying the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and was thinking of getting a good ultra wide lens. The two contenders in my mind are the Tokina 11-16 and the Canon 10-18mm. I don't do much videography and so I don't really care about the STM, but I do care about the cost and the IS. On the other hand, occasionally I also shoot star trails and general low light shots for which the f/2.8 and the distance meter on the Tokina is going to be real handy. But overall I just need a sharp lens (sharper than 18-55) to do wide angle landscapes. What do you suggest me to go for?
I just purchased this lens. Looking forward to capturing some beautiful Arizona scenery in the next few weeks of my vacation. Great review. I'll try and make good use of the tips given.
I have this lens for crop sensor use. I think it is a very good lens. Yes, it is a bit slow, but I think of it as an outdoor lens. With 3-4 stops of IS it is fine. Because it is small, filters are less expensive. If you need the absolute image quality this may not be the lens for you. If you are hard on equipment, this may not be for you as it is lightly built. For many of us, this lens will do nicely, at an affordable price.
Great review! I have seen your comment about this lense not being a good lense for star photography, but given that the tokina 11-18mm f2.8 is almost double the price, would you still recommend it over this lense for star photography?
If you are serious about star photography the Tokina is well worth the extra price. If you just want to try out star photography the Canon 10-18 is OK but not great. Do you own any STM lenses now? They are not so easy to focus in the dark - no distance indicator and no hard stop on the focus ring.
I liked the 35mm focal length best. In the wider shots, I just couldn't find the subject. At 35, I like the rolling mountains as the subject with enough foreground to give it depth. The tighter shots lost too much of the foreground.
You can really see distortion as you are walking up the first set of steps in the corners of the background (take a look as you move the camera slightly). Looks like a nice fun lens. Hope Nikon are paying attention :)
There was some wobble from the stabilization software. Will see what Nikon comes up with in response, I wonder if they will do some STM equivalent tech in future lenses too.
of course that's if you plan on shooting video. if shooting stills only, a longer exposure will save the day, as long as there's no motion happening in the room and you use a tripod.
Thanks for the review, mine should be here tomorrow! I appreciate the caution on the pitfalls of going potentially going too wide on scenery since I will be headed out to the Tetons in September with this (along with my trusty 18-135, a 40 pancake, and the 55-250). Thanks for the series of sample shots, they really help get a feel for the different focal lengths. I could see going with anything 35 or wider - anything narrower and I started to feel like I should be seeing a subject in the foreground rather than taking in the vista. Given that, it seems like the pancake might not be a bad option for scenery (a little narrower than 35, but I think the best quality lens that I have in my bag).
Thanks Marc - I think you will find some mountain photos will look best with your 55-250 on? Compresses and brings them nice and close. Enjoy the trip and be sure to share some images when you get back!
Those mountains are going to be far away, even when they are kinda close they are still going to be far :) And I think you will be surprised how often the 55-250 actually does an nice job. There are certainly times where wider will be better though.
Toby, i loved your chanel and have already subscribed. I'm considering buying 10-18mm for a trip to europe. But i'm in doubt about buying it or a gopro4. The purpuse is for taking good pictures. What would you recommend? I dont like the image distortions that gorpo makes but it has the option of shooting in narrow mode.
I have the Tokina 11 16 2.8 and think about to switch to this awesome lens. I know, aperture is not that good as with the Tokina, but this Canon lens is light and not a tank. In addition, it has a STM motor which allows to take nice video shots with my 70D. What do you think, is there a big big quality difference to my Tokina 2.8?? cheers
Will purchase tomorrow thanks for review very helpful. On a side note what's the backing track to your review its driving me mad I need to hear more lol..
Great video, thanks for sharing. I use this lens for vlogging and travel purely because of its wide angle and weight.....its so light!!! but when im at home and wanting to shoot landscape or astro...I have the tokina that you have also recommended. i think if I could make a recommendation to fellow film makers or photographers...you really need to decide what your main reason or use is of any lens
The notion that wider helps in low light is a bit of a furphy, in changing light a story isn't going to help for long anyway, and decreasing depth of field MA be problematic. I choose aperture to control DOF, not willingly to compensate for lack of light. I use a 17-40 on a 6D, it good for landscapes and environmental portraits. I don't seem to get close enough for significant bokeh. I have f/2.8 lenses from 24-200, but I wouldn't often have them anywhere near wide open for landscapes.
Hey, Toby. I just got one of these for interior real estate videos. I'm noticing a lot of lens flare issues in some of my low light video. Is there a way to prevent that? Would taking off the UV filter help? Thanks.
Thanks for the advice/shots of mountains! When I visit washington I want a lens to capture the cascade and olympic ranges but I'm rethinking a ulta wide for such a purpose. Great video as usual!
nice review as always. im basically new to photography and im using canon 70d with tamron 24-70 as my my walkthrough lens, i really wanted a wide angle lens and thinking of getting the canon 10-22 , i dont do video and only shoot still pictures im not sure if i would get the 10-18 or the 10-22 as it has very good reputation of a lens. any advise from you or from your viewers would really be nice. keep up your videos and thank you very much.
Good review on this lens. Looking forward to the upcoming comparisons. Also, how would using a wider angle lens (maybe the 10mm) compare to stitching a couple photos (maybe at 18mm) together in Photoshop? Any benefits/downsides to one or another method? I know the images wouldn't look exactly the same, but seems like you could get a very similar shot, albeit with a bit more work.
Stitching can be just fine and you can actually get the very wide look without the great distance. Downsides - doesn't work with moving objects - cars, people, waves/ripples etc.
Toby, thanks for the detailed and practical review. What I'm wondering is how much the IS comes into play when shooting handheld video? I own the Tokina 11-16, and while the wobble isn't nearly as apparent as on my other lenses, it's still there. Will the 10-18's IS be a noticeable improvement?
Thanks for this video Toby. That's a good price at 300 bucks, i love STM and IS is great. But @ f4.5-5.6, it's too dark for me. There is no way i can use this for indoor videos. I think if they made it at least f 3.5, then i would for sure buy it. Thanks.
Your review has been very helpful, mate. Thank you very much. I have a question; ¿Would you recommend this lens for astrophotography and night photography? Thanks again!
I wouldn't - it starts at f/4 .5 and quickly closes down. Much better is the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for night and astro of the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ruclips.net/video/_TSrFKLzsrQ/видео.html
I would like to try a wide angle angle lens, I have tried to justify it with the landscapes we have nearby but I must say 18mm and 35mm were my favourites. I'm sure a wide angle could be great for indoor photography though to capture more of a room. Is it suitable for any type of portraiture?
There are some photographers that do photograph people with wide angle lenses - more of the distant shots though and you have to be careful not to distort them. I wouldn't go so far as to call it portraits but it is people photos :)
Hi, As you pointed out in the video the Canon 10-22mm is near double the cost but for what I want a wide angle lens for is IRP, how does the STM stand up in Infrared photography? The 10-22mm is shown not to have hot spots when used for IRP so any chance you could do a small test with this STM lens. Thank You. Russ
Thanks for the great review; I am almost sold on this but also considering a wide angle for my 70D. What are your thoughts on the Rokinon 8 mm fisheye? With the crop factor, it would be a 12.8 mm on the 70D. I know its a fully manual lens and not sharp until about f/8 but if manual is acceptable, it would be a lot wider than the 16mm that the new EF-S 10-18mm would give at 10mm. Thank you.
I understand this lens is not weather sealed. I live in Miami Florida and I'm plannimg to use this lens outdoors which is humid most of the times. Does any of you have had experience with humidity getting inside this lens ?
Depending on where dynamic range testing puts the 6D MkII, this lens just might make me feel better about going with the 80D, getting the wider view I would have gotten with a full frame and my 16-35mm. Thanks for the info!
Toby, I sell real estate and often need to shoot house/building interiors. How would this lens work? Using a flash wouldn't be a problem usually, and I generally shoot In the daytime.
Logan, it would work very well. I actually had a bit of the review that got cut where I talk about who this lens would be good for and real estate is at the top of that list. digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/2014/06/canon-10-18-wide-angle-lens-review/
Hello Toby, I am planning to get a new lens, at first i consider the standard 18-55mm but then i think 10-18mm works really great. My main purpose for the lens is for traveling. Currently i have the 18-200mm and i feel that the weight is too heavy for travel (or it's just me being weak). What do you suggest? Because i heard 10-18mm is not very best at low light, or night time. And from your review, my concern is about capturing those mountain views. It does look small and less appealing (though the forest and the surrounding looks cooler). Thank you!
+Anggia Ristriana Image quality does not change depending on how the lens looks.... And don't buy the 18-55 if you already have an 18-200. There is no point because your already getting 18mm 55mm and all the way up to 200mm. This 10-18mm is a great first time wide angle.
+Timi Hi, thank you for your advice! The reason why i am considering 18-55mm because i feel that my 18-200mm is too heavy for traveling (as my main purpose is to bring it travel on this summer). I prefer to travel light, so i want to bring only one lens for all purpose of shots (which i think that 18-55mm could be a good fit). As for 10-18mm, im worried since its a wide lens, it wouldn't be good to capture human object within close-up range or for food photography, which i will do beside capturing the nature or landmarks in my upcoming trip.
Anggia Ristriana I recommend then getting a 50mm prime if you want to do people portraits. But if you practice you can switch lenses from the wide angle to the 18-200 or the 50mm (if you decide to get that) quite quickly. But the 18-200 is a great travel lens. But for that kind of zoom range the lens is always going to be heavy no matter what. I have several lenses and all of them weigh over 800g. Lenses are quite heavy. But the 10-18 is light as well as the 50mm 1.8. I rambled on, so I don't know if I helped at all but there you go. :)
Quick question. I have this 10-18 STM and also the 40mm 2.8 STM pancake used on 70D. In your opinion is there a compelling reason to buy the 24mm STM pancake?
I have a dilemma. I'm going to be buying a 70d for an up coming trip to Tokyo. I'm mainly a video guy, that takes an occasional still shot, who's upgrading from an iPhone 6 Plus. For me to stay within my budget I can get the 70d with the 18-55mm kit lens and buy the additional 10-18mm lens or I can afford just the 70d with the 18-135mm kit lens. Which route would you go?? Thanks
If you're looking to get a wider field of view for you're videos then the 10-18 and 18-55 make a good kit for you. 18mm is wide but 10mm really transforms and emphasizes the subject in the middle of the frame. All of these lenses are optically stabilized very well so it's just the matter of, do you want a wider field of view or a greater zoom length?
+TVKVMIX Thank you very much for your response. I ended up going with the 18-135mm kit lens because the 18-55 was sold out. They made the decision for me haha Thank you again I appreciate your help.
Hi Toby, I have the EOS 80D and 18-135 nano usm lens which came bundled with the body. I'm just starting to get into landscapes and was wondering if I need any wider lens. What is advisable, sticking around to the kit lens for some time or should I just get a wider lens?
Great Video, I have found the Tokina 11-16 DXii for £320, or I can get the 10-18 for £250, do you think the Tokina at that price is more of a bargain? or would you still go for the Cannon 10-18, i would be taking pictures of scenery and also architecture.
My Tokina 11-16 is f2.8, all metal and works on my FF and APS-H camera. (with some vignetting) Canon's decision to make it's EF-S lenses not work with it's FF and APS-H cameras is a major handicap. The IS on the new lens is nice, but I shoot sports. I want metal, I want f2.8 or better.
Strange question maybe, but, regarding that you have enogh light at set, do you think the image quality from this lens will be sufficient to shoot professional TV / web-tv documentaries (1080p)? My main lens will be 17-55 f2.8 IS USM (EFS). Shooting with 550D and 70D
Hey Toby, I have a canon eos m. And I was considering either this lens or canon ef m 11-22. At retail price the ef m is about $100 more. But the efs will need an adapter. But im hoping with time the ef s 10-18 will go down in price.
EF-M 11-22 is an excellent lens, I'd go with it. The only downside is lacking 10 mm on the wide side, which to someone can be significant (about 10% wider).
Jan Tichavský yeah I was leaning towards the ef m as it is a native lens plus the ef m lenses blow the equivalent ef s lenses out of the water in terms of build and image quality.
Looks like the stabilizer added in post to stabilize the footage is trying to compensate for movement but is the image bend and distort unnaturally, as is often the case. Nothing to do with the lens.
I would like something with image stabilization to replace my Samyang 8mm for video. I'm wondering what is the wobbling effect in the image when walking up to tower, starting from 7:28. Is it the image stabilization?
Hi Toby Is this lens good enough for real estate photography? I have read reviews that talk about unwanted flares. Do you know any techniques how to solve it? given the circumstances of this kind of photography (interior) in some occasions I will double exposure to compensate the exterior light in windows and the ambient light. Do you think I'll have some kind of problem? Actually I do not see that I am interested in AF so much or that it is stabilized because as I told you, it will be to photograph interiors and exteriors of houses and apartments, always using a tripod. Bearing in mind that it is what I need and what I do not need so much in terms of the use of this lens. What matters most to me: * Acceptable photographic quality * Necessity of a 10mm * The maximum opening of 4.5 will not be a problem in light situations? What alternatives do you know about other brands like Samiyang, Tamron, Tokina or Sigma? better photographic quality without an AF and / or stabilizer? thank you and excuse my english. I talk about it often but for these kind of situations I may be wrong often. I await your answer to see if I go through this lens or some other better alternative
Hi would you recommend this lens for shooting video for unboxing/review vids for youtube?? The items i review are around the sizeof a coke bottle. Incurrently have a 18-55mm however find it difficult to fit all in the frame, and plus the minimal focus distance is 22cm which is fine as i sit behind the camera! Any help be much appreciated :)
Hi Toby, I am considering this lens for photographing indoors (and out); specifically to take before/after type shots for a construction company. I used Canon's 24mm pancake lens recently for such a shoot and was wondering if the 10mm would be a better lens for shooting rooms, office space, etc. I do realize the limits of a slow lens but I don't think that would be a big problem because I wouldn't be shooting indoors at night.
+TC Conner 10mm is great for that kind of thing on an APS-C body but that starting aperture will limit you. The Tokina 11-16 F2.8 may be a better option for you
Can you please compare it to the Samyang prime lenses, such as the 10mm or the 14mm? They're more or less in the same price range, especially the 14mm, and they're considered some of the best fast lenses for the price... Thanks :)
CameraRec Toby Hello! I love this lens and the price even more. I am sort of an amateur but I am learning quickly. I have a T3i, a PowerShot sx50 and an old 35mmPentax k1000...(it's my favorite of the 3!) Anyway, I have been doing mostly street photography. My question to you is...do you think this would work for that? I do understand that it might be hard to single one person out but sometimes, I see a person or a group of people and I can't get a good shot because the composition is off because of a door or window but if I could add it, the shot might be a keeper. Like most people just starting out, money is tight so I can only afford one lens right now. Would a 35 or 85mm be a better fit for what I'm doing? This price is so good it makes me want it just because! Lol! Thanks!
My first consideration was the fact that I frequently needed 10mm. Ten millimeters is a whopping 10% wider than 11mm, so if you really need 10mm, then you have very little choice. I also shoot video, so I need IS. That leaves me with zero options at all: This lens is it. The slower aperture is something I can get around with ISO or shutter speed, but when I hit the need for a short focal length, that's a brick wall.
Thanks for your review of this new lens, was looking out for reviews and more seem to be coming online now, your review is good and well rounded. The main contender in the Canon lineup would be the Canon 10-22mm lens, I wonder how this lens compares to the 10-22mm lens which is around double the price, will be interested to see comparisons between the two and really look forward to your comparison with it. Will you be reviewin the Canon 16-35mm f4L lens that has also just been released?
You mention bumping shutter to 120, is that the same with video? I thought if you shoot at 30 your shutter should be 60. Are you saying with a 10-18 I need to bump to 120 to avoid shake?
Hi there, First of all, I would like to thank you for all the tips and the tutorials that have been very helpful for us all. Secondly, I would ask a favor, to review "tamron 70-300mm f 4-5.6 di vc usd" if possible, as I have heard it is a very good telephoto lens with excellent VC, and I am not able to find a decent review on youtube about it. Hoping to have this review from you real soon. Regards.
Any thoughts on using it with extension tubes? I shoot a lot of macro and I'm curios what you would get. Effective focal distance, DOF, sharpness... Thanks!
With these STM lenses you lose all autofocus abilities if used with extension tubes that lack electronic connections. I don't think it would work well. I have some around here, I can give it a try. If you have smart extension tubes, ones with electronic pass through, could be very interesting - I can't say for sure what kind of results you would get though.
Great vid! Love the new pro look and feel of it. Looking forward to a 16-35mm f/4 vid. Have a 17-40mm now and I'm wondering if the f/8 to 11 will be noticeably sharper. And if it handles flare as good or better. Well done, cheers =)
That 17-40 is a good lens and a great value. This 16-35 gives you IS and will likely be sharper across the range but you are certainly paying more. Thanks!
How will be this for canon 1100D considering the low ISO range and no of autofocus points. How will be the picture quality and sharpness? Or should I try another lens.
oh thanks for response, didn't expect it that fast :D and thanks for the great review as well, I'm thinking about buying thins lense. There was one part that I really missed and that was sort of bird eye view of a test scene whwere we could see how mouch space it covered
SamoScopom Have you watched my followup review Canon 10-18 vs Canon 10-22 vs Tokina 11-16 - Review and Samples it has some more samples. the view is wide- you take a moment to like my FB page and leave me a message there and I can put together a quick sample shot this week.
Dear i'm working on establishing an automotive studio and i am not having this much space only 5 meters wide so i will be 1.5 meters away from the car . so do you think that this lens will capture the car from bumper to bumper ? and is it good for capturing the car Interior ? or what is the best lense for this job ? thanking you in advance
Have you used some stabilization in video postprocessing? Video on stairs - I see some strange distortions or jelly effect simillar to youtube automatic stabilization. Maybe it is because of lens AF moving?
CameraRec Toby I've noticed it only because I've done the stabilization for my video in Premiere Pro with simillar result few days ago :) PPro removes vertical movement quite well, but horizontal - not.
CameraRec Toby I'll pick one up when they come out here in the UK and let you know how it goes, Love your videos and value your opinions, keep up the good work!!
Would I be able to get into astrophotography with this lense? I was thinking on the 2.8 aperture of the Tokina 11-16, but is almost twice the price, it is posible to get the same shots with this one? need advice on this please
I've been shooting some skateboarding videos with my Samyang 8mm fisheye lens and the 18-55 kit lens on my t3i and I'm thinking of replacing the kit lens with another lens. This wide angle Canon 10-18 seems like a nice option but does fit to shooting video where you're moving as well is the object you're filming? Or do you know a lens that you think might fit to my purpose better?
can u please tell me is there any vignetting at 10mm I ,v heard about that quit often and how it can be removed if it is so?.. I will be waiting for you reply Thanx..

thanks for this informative video.it is work for my canon 600d camera?
I think the 35mm looked the best. Didn't make the mountains look tiny but still gave you a large scenic view.
I bought this lens as part of the Canon Portrait & Travel 2 Lens Kit, last year. I love it and would recommend it to others. Low cost great pictures.
Thank you Toby. I Have ordered this Lens for my Canon 70D and intend to use it during summer vacation in Greece. Since my last message to you, i have purchased the Canon 70-200 IS II and i am so happy using it for Portrait and some landscape too.

Thanks for the useful video, I would like to know the best lens between efs 10-18mm and sigma 8-16mm for landscape photography.
Thanks again
Thanks for the great review. I have also watched your comparison video with the Tokina and Canon 10-22mm lens.
I would like your advice on something. I currently have a T3i (600D) with a 18-55mm IS, 55-250mm IS II and nifty fifty. I am thinking of upgrading my lens set up to get some better IQ. But overall I just need a sharp lens (sharper than 18-55) to do wide angle landscapes. What do you suggest me to go for?
go with the tokina if you don't need STM for video
I just purchased this lens. Looking forward to capturing some beautiful Arizona scenery in the next few weeks of my vacation. Great review. I'll try and make good use of the tips given.
What lav microphone are you using? Are you plugged into an external recorder? Your sound quality is great!
If you need a really good lav mic buy the rode lave mic. It's £40 I have it and it's amazing. Plugs into your phone.
Very fair. I agree.
What lens did you use to film the parts of you talking about the 10-18?
Very nice review! I have the lens from kit (18-55) then I bought 55-250 and now I am looking at this sweetie (10-18) to complete the trio :P
I just ordered this yesterday, and I will use it for video work when I travel, Also for those Cathedrals in Europe that are huge
Hi toby, Is this lens good for astrophotography?
Hi Toby, Just got my T5i and your videos that talk about lenses really answer my questions on the dot! Great Examples...
I like the 10mm shots from the tower the best.
Can i use this for interior real estate photography?
Yes. Best with a tripod or flash because it is a slower lens (smaller minimum aperture)
You can really see distortion as you are walking up the first set of steps in the corners of the background (take a look as you move the camera slightly). Looks like a nice fun lens. Hope Nikon are paying attention :)
There was some wobble from the stabilization software. Will see what Nikon comes up with in response, I wonder if they will do some STM equivalent tech in future lenses too.
nice review!but will it work on 6D??
of course that's if you plan on shooting video. if shooting stills only, a longer exposure will save the day, as long as there's no motion happening in the room and you use a tripod.
CameraRec Toby Interesting, I was thinking the 55-250 would be too narrow. I guess I need to watch your Focal Length and Perspective video!
Those mountains are going to be far away, even when they are kinda close they are still going to be far :) And I think you will be surprised how often the 55-250 actually does an nice job. There are certainly times where wider will be better though.
Great review - helped my understanding!
Toby, i loved your chanel and have already subscribed. I'm considering buying 10-18mm for a trip to europe. But i'm in doubt about buying it or a gopro4. The purpuse is for taking good pictures. What would you recommend? I dont like the image distortions that gorpo makes but it has the option of shooting in narrow mode.
always appreciate your videos Toby! unbiased and to the point.
I own 3 lenses, an 18-55mm kit lens, a 55-250mm telephoto zoom lens, and a 50mm f2.8 prime lens. I'm looking to add a 10-18mm lens to my gear.
How is it? I have the exact same lens you have.
This is a fun lens to shoot it. I selled mine and bought again. Will never sell again
Thanks Jack - What lenses do you have now?
Hey Toby, what mic do you use?
nice review as always. im basically new to photography and im using canon 70d with tamron 24-70 as my my walkthrough lens, i really wanted a wide angle lens and thinking of getting the canon 10-22 , i dont do video and only shoot still pictures im not sure if i would get the 10-18 or the 10-22 as it has very good reputation of a lens. any advise from you or from your viewers would really be nice. keep up your videos and thank you very much.
Hi Dennis - I will have the 10-22 next week and be able to make some direct comparisons.
Your videos always look so well lit! Are you using lighting equipment even while outdoors?
Thanks and no. Just waiting for good conditions or finding a location that has good light.
Oh ok good call! What do you use for your indoor lighting for your videos? Or did you talk about it in a prior video?
RedMoonRising24 inside I am using a version of this Cheap Lighting for Video and more
***** Adorama or B&H no taxes. Screw Amazon.
i really like your reviews, makes me get the info i had no idea on so i can make the best buy white out over spending...
Thanks again
Excellent video. Personally I think the 35mm gave the best all around look and feel.
Didn't even think of that, I was stuck thinking about wide open landscapes, but that makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Hi Toby, is it compatible for 7D
+DJ DOD Yes.
Would this lens be good for large group shots with flash??
Toby, thanks for the detailed and practical review. What I'm wondering is how much the IS comes into play when shooting handheld video? I own the Tokina 11-16, and while the wobble isn't nearly as apparent as on my other lenses, it's still there. Will the 10-18's IS be a noticeable improvement?
That 10-18 does offer a nice IS system that should smooth out most video. I can do a test in the next week or two.
Thanks for this video Toby.
That's a good price at 300 bucks, i love STM and IS is great.
But @ f4.5-5.6, it's too dark for me.
There is no way i can use this for indoor videos.
I think if they made it at least f 3.5, then i would for sure buy it.
Thanks.
even at 1/50 of a second? It's true they sacrificed aperture to keep the price down.
I liked the 35mm east and the 18mm west!
Stabilization is nice to keep your camera from moving, but motion blur caused your subject still effects photos the same at such slow shutter speeds.
Yep - that is why I specified static subjects. I agree, anything moving is going to be soft/blurry at those slower shutter speeds.
So does it also work for canon 80d?
+Sophie N. Mai yes it does
compatible wedding photography canon 60D ?
Toby, I sell real estate and often need to shoot house/building interiors. How would this lens work? Using a flash wouldn't be a problem usually, and I generally shoot In the daytime.
Logan, it would work very well. I actually had a bit of the review that got cut where I talk about who this lens would be good for and real estate is at the top of that list. digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/2014/06/canon-10-18-wide-angle-lens-review/
Hello Toby,
I am planning to get a new lens, at first i consider the standard 18-55mm but then i think 10-18mm works really great.
Anggia Ristriana
I recommend then getting a 50mm prime if you want to do people portraits.
All of these lenses are optically stabilized very well so it's just the matter of, do you want a wider field of view or a greater zoom length?
your*
+TVKVMIX Thank you very much for your response. I ended up going with the 18-135mm kit lens because the 18-55 was sold out. They made the decision for me haha Thank you again I appreciate your help.
I own the 70D, and I currently use the Sigma 10-20, but it shows AF noise. This would be a prefect fit for your trip
Hey Toby,
I have a canon eos m. And I was considering either this lens or canon ef m 11-22. At retail price the ef m is about $100 more. But the efs will need an adapter. But im hoping with time the ef s 10-18 will go down in price.
We might see a small drop but at $299 it is already lots of lens for the money.
7:40 what’s happening with the image? Bubble trees
Looks like the stabilizer added in post to stabilize the footage is trying to compensate for movement but is the image bend and distort unnaturally, as is often the case. Nothing to do with the lens.
is this suitable with 50D?
Turn your shake correction off for later videos, looks worse than just seeing some natural shake.
I would like something with image stabilization to replace my Samyang 8mm for video. I'm wondering what is the wobbling effect in the image when walking up to tower, starting from 7:28. Is it the image stabilization?
+Janne19691 You're exactly right. That is an artifact of IS. It covers jitter pretty well, but the larger rattles will show up like in the video.
+Seth Callahan Thank you Seth!
+Janne19691 It's because of software stabilization
Hi Toby
Is this lens good enough for real estate photography? I have read reviews that talk about unwanted flares. Do you know any techniques how to solve it?
given the circumstances of this kind of photography (interior) in some occasions I will double exposure to compensate the exterior light in windows and the ambient light. Do you think I'll have some kind of problem?
Actually I do not see that I am interested in AF so much or that it is stabilized because as I told you, it will be to photograph interiors and exteriors of houses and apartments, always using a tripod.
Bearing in mind that it is what I need and what I do not need so much in terms of the use of this lens.
What matters most to me:
* Acceptable photographic quality
* Necessity of a 10mm
* The maximum opening of 4.5 will not be a problem in light situations?
Hi, do you consider this lens to be noisy in low light / night sky situations
Hi Toby, I am considering this lens for photographing indoors (and out); specifically to take before/after type shots for a construction company. I used Canon's 24mm pancake lens recently for such a shoot and was wondering if the 10mm would be a better lens for shooting rooms, office space, etc. I do realize the limits of a slow lens but I don't think that would be a big problem because I wouldn't be shooting indoors at night.
+TC Conner 10mm is great for that kind of thing on an APS-C body but that starting aperture will limit you.
The Tokina 11-16 F2.8 may be a better option for you
+PhotoRec TV Thanks Toby! I'll see what my finances can handle!
Can you please compare it to the Samyang prime lenses, such as the 10mm or the 14mm? They're more or less in the same price range, especially the 14mm, and they're considered some of the best fast lenses for the price... Thanks :)
Can you link to where you were talking about the shutter speed / focal length rule?
ruclips.net/video/ypARnDnnYCE/видео.htmlm19s
Lol! Thanks!
MAY I KNOW WHAT CAMERA YOU USE TO SHOOT YOUR RUclips VIDEO?
My first consideration was the fact that I frequently needed 10mm. Ten millimeters is a whopping 10% wider than 11mm, so if you really need 10mm, then you have very little choice. I also shoot video, so I need IS. That leaves me with zero options at all: This lens is it. The slower aperture is something I can get around with ISO or shutter speed, but when I hit the need for a short focal length, that's a brick wall.
+Kirk Darling Not sure it is 10% on a crop sensor it is closer to 5%
Thanks for your review of this new lens, was looking out for reviews and more seem to be coming online now, your review is good and well rounded.
I may review the 16-35 soon too. Thanks! Comparison should be up this week.
Great, looking forward to the comparison.
How do I get rid of the distortion?
also works on a 7D2
You mention bumping shutter to 120, is that the same with video? I thought if you shoot at 30 your shutter should be 60. Are you saying with a 10-18 I need to bump to 120 to avoid shake?
How would circular polarizer do with this lens? Maybe ND would be a better option?
Those two filters do different things. But with a wide angle lens you do need to be careful when working with a polarizer.
Hi there,
First of all, I would like to thank you for all the tips and the tutorials that have been very helpful for us all.
Thanks!
even though it's cheaper I can't make my mind up between this lens and the Sigma 10-20 f3.5 so what would you suggest
I have this lens and it's amazing!!
you put much work in your videos thumbs up.
it is compatible with 700D?
How will be this for canon 1100D considering the low ISO range and no of autofocus points. How will be the picture quality and sharpness? Or should I try another lens.
+Aniruddha Majumder Great lens for the 1100d. But if you do plan to shoot in lower light the 11-16 f/2.8 will be better.
great review, very informative
have you used some sort of software IS around 7:30 when going up stairs?:
SamoScopom yes - I used the standard stabilizer in Final Cut Pro and it did make things go a little jelly there.
oh thanks for response, didn't expect it that fast :D
and thanks for the great review as well, I'm thinking about buying thins lense.
CameraRec Toby I have, but you told me to watch this one first and than I forgot so I will just jump back to taht one
Good Catch - I wondered if anyone would comment. I did use the stabilization in Final Cut Pro X on the stairs.
CameraRec Toby I've noticed it only because I've done the stabilization for my video in Premiere Pro with simillar result few days ago :) PPro removes vertical movement quite well, but horizontal - not.
I'm thinking this will make an excellent lens for photographing interiors of houses and rooms would it not. It will be very useful to me for that.
YES - this lens is near perfect for that - especially if you can put it on a tripod and not worry about slower shutter speeds.
CameraRec Toby I'll pick one up when they come out here in the UK and let you know how it goes, Love your videos and value your opinions, keep up the good work!!
best, balanced review.
Thanks for the great review.
