I actually bought the 10-18 for real estate photography and had to return it. It consistently made a magenta ghosting effect at windows, chandeliers and any bright spot in the photo. I bought a used 10-22 and was much happier. No ghosting on the old 10-22.
This video helped me out greatly several years back when I first started shooting with canon glass. One thing I have since learned is that 10-18 has some seriously crazy lens flares when shooting towards a light fixture such as a chandelier, etc. I shoot real estate so this happens often. I also have the tokina 11-16 and it produces 0 lens flares when shot in the same situation as the 10-18. I just bought the 10-22 to try out now and hoping it is like the tokina with less flares because I really like that 1mm extra width from the canon. Tokina definitely has more chromatic aberrations (easy enough to fix in post). Figured I would add my 2-cents to anyone curious on how these do for real estate.
@@luisungredda9029 yes, it is 100% usable. I used the 10-18 professionally for years and it is easy enough to edit out the lens flares. They typically show up around unshaded light sources like chandeliers. I still have one of my shooters using the 10-18 daily for property shoots. I personally use the 10-22 now if on a crop canon and my 15mm Loawa if on my full frame sony. It just saves me a bit of time not editing out the flares but again its not every picture, just when pointed at an open light source. Hope that helps,
@@nishanketbaniya9476 really depends on what kind of work you are planning to do with it. I shoot real estate so a full manual lens works well for me. Loawa does a 15mm full manual (focus and aperture) lens for canon full frame. Reason I like loawa is because they have a zero distortion and f2.0 is great for low light interior video. Look up on B&H Photos website "Venus Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens for Canon EOS." That is my go-to for real estate. Lens is on the pricy side for full manual for the zero distortion and high quality image saves me a lot of time from post process editing. If you need auto focus, probably go with one of canons 16mm full frame options. They have several like a 16-35, but I am very happy with my laowa. If you need a more budget friendly full frame lens, Rokinon has several. Their 14mm puts out a decent image but you will have distortion that you have to correct in post processing. I have used all of these at one point. Best of luck!
Just realized PhotoRec Tv has a video comp for the Laowa lens as well. His videos are super helpful seeing comparisons like these. ruclips.net/video/JlRf7jIMy8E/видео.html
I love night time photography. The Tokina really is the only choice. Philip Bloom has recommend it at 16mm for a FF camera. Ive tried it on a 5DMII and found it to be crazy wide but usable (smidgen of vinette). However I bought the Canon 10-18mm for daytime shooting, and which now I will try for silky smooth water falls. I like to shoot inside Cathedrals when I travel and found the 10-18mm was very weak in these darker sanctuaries (ISO cranked adds grain, and the shadows were unacceptable). Thanx for your review.
I have a 7D with a couple of L lenses, 70-200f2.8L non is, 17-40 f4L,(my general walk around zoom lens), and was looking for a wide angle crop lens for my Canon. I found great information and specs with your video on these 3 lenses that I'm currently considering. I think I might have a winner with the 10-18 Canon. I definitely needed this range to be completely covered. Thanks for this great informative video.
It seems I always seek out these comparisons after the fact, but it's nice to see I chose the right lens! I had ordered the 10-18mm on a $299.00(Canadian) boxing day deal, but then was considering a used Tokina at the same price. The Tokina owner is out of town, so I couldn't pull the trigger; glad I didn't. Thanks for a great comparison review of exactly the three lenses I was considering, your effort and expertise are greatly appreciated. 🙏
Came across your video today. Love the comparisons. U explained all very well and at an understandable pace. I will buy that 10-18mm lens for my Canon EOS 800D. It will suit my Real Estate well.
I have the Canon 10-18, and the Tokina 11-16. Tokina for low light stuff and in doors, as I don't find the Canon isn't much use after dark. Having said that, the Tokina flares terribly in night street photography, the Canon is better if the scene is a non moving one. The Canon is brilliant in the daytime, and is ultra quiet and ultra light if you need to carry it around all day, like I do. However, the Tokina is also brilliant in the day, and produces lovely starpoints/starburst when you stop it down. The main drawback is the Tokina weighs a ton in comparison to the Canon, and doesn't focus nowhere as close to the subject if you need that. For video, use the Canon; for photography use the Tokina. If you use the Canon for photography, make sure you have light or a flash.
I really appreciated your video. It's about one mounth i'm thinking to buy one of this three objectives, and today i've bought the canon 10 - 18. I'm waiting from Amazon. And than i saw your video. Happy to see i've done the right choise.
Hi, for a real estate video, wich one is better brother? thanks for the answer, i think tokina is the best option because the interior of the houses.. isnt it?
Honestly all three would do well. Inside a house where it is dark the faster aperture could help but really you want good depth of field inside always so you should be on a tripod.
Great video even after ten years. I love the 10 - 18. I bought a metal mount replacement part for the plastic mount. I got it on Amazon and the install was easy.
Thank you for making this review. I have been making tons of notes have had the hardest darn time figuring out which features are worth giving up on a wide angle lens and which I will be using more. Your straight to the point, non boasting personality also make you enjoyable to watch. So many people start off talking for so long that I have to fast forward to get to the actual info. Thanks again, I will check ya out on Facebook!
I came from the Tamron 10-24mm which always had distortion on the edges(old model not new), but i worked with what I had then. Just two months ago I got the 77D, what was my first choice for UWA lens? the Canon 10-18mm stm, trust me all the reviews are NOT wrong about this lens its painfully sharp right across the lens. I would have got the Tokina for low light work, but I really don't need 2.8 in a bright sunny part of the World that I live in. Toby is right, unless your doing star trails and night time landscape the Canon will trounce the Tokina every time. Thanks for a great comparison Toby, love your reviews, always balance and sensible conclusions built on hard facts and your experience.
Excellent review that helped me so much with making up my mind about which wide angle lens to buy. Every second of the video really well used. And you did it with no cuts :) Thank you.
Most of what I shoot is video indoors in basement so I require the STM and larger aperture. I have video lighting but not sufficient for even my 18-55 at F3.5 without pushing the ISO. It's too bad Canon doesn't have an F2.8 at higher price point. It will cost me a couple hundred just to get sufficient lighting for F4.5. I'd rather that money go into a more robust lens.
I was torn between the Canon 10 - 18 and the Tokina 11 - 16 but this video helped me clear my ideas! I was really looking for a review like this with the photo and video comparison (with also the sound, as I was thinking about using the lens also for shooting some videos). Thank you much! You gained a subscriber! ☺️
Thanks a lot for the detailed review. I was confused between 10-188mm and 10-22mm since the former has a plastic mount. This review helped me a lot. Going for the 10-18mm.
I'm looking for a wide angle to have a better reach at shooting fireworks shows. I'm not sure if I should pick the Tokina, on of the Canons or even the Sigma 10-20mm. What would you recommend ? I don't like the fact that the 10-18mm Canon is full plastic.
Then according to you the best lens is the canon 10-18? I have that lens and I wanted to buy new tokina 11 20 mm 2.8 Now I changed idea. I remain with my old cheap 10-18. Thanks
I own the 10 - 22 for about a year and I think if I had to choose once again, I would still buy the 10 - 22. USM is more trustworthy than STM with my 7D, more light than 10 - 18 and, don't forget, that 22 mm on crop sensor is about 35 on FF - which is wide standard and works pretty good in repo.
Hi Toby, I hadn't heard of your channel before today. Whilst looking at sample images from members of a forum, I came across a link to this comparison. Was very useful, thank you. I shall be subscribing!
Canon 10-18mm is miles better than other lenses in this comparison. It gives equal sharpness BUT is much better at chromatic aberation than Tokina, much quieter and smoother in video capturing, has IS, and can focus very close. Slower f-stop doesn't mean anything, as it has aforementioned IS, and with it it actually becomes more capable of taking handheld sharper pictures in low light than any other lens here. It is slower maybe 1-2 stops, but it is compensating this with 4 stops capable IS ! Today's DSLR mostly have excellent ISO performances, so that doesn't matter too. And is cheapest lens here..all in all great lens for money.
Hi, I have a question. I know that Rokinon FE14M-C 14mm F2.8 wasn't mentioned in this video, but I just couldn't find any comparisons between it and Canon 10-18mm. In case you tested both, can I ask, which one of them would you recommend for video recording more? They are both at pretty similar price point right now and I am not sure which one to choose. Thank you very much for your time. :)
The Tokina has a constant aperture of 2.8, meaning that you will get anywhere from 1-2 stops more light. This could mean dropping the ISO down from 3200 to 1600 or even 800! In my opinion, this makes it better for astrophotography :)
Unfortunately I had two Tokina 11-16 now, both with sharpening problems in infinity. I now got myself a Sigma 10-22mm f/3.5 I'll see tonight if it's a good choice.
+Florian Fabian I'm back from a Milky Way trip and I can say, the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM is the right objective for me :) After I was extremely disapointed from the two Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 I tried, the Sigma has healed the wounds. I got mine for 399€, so I guess it's still in a good price range and an alternative for the Canon 10-22
Thank you for the good review. I just bought USED Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX lens for my Canon 70D and found that auto focus does not focusing correct especially at the short distance and need to be corrected with manual focus but my other lenses are fine. Would like to have your opinion, please, do you think is something wrong with the lens or ...? Thank you.
thank for the review. I've bought the 10-18mm because of all the glowing reviews everywhere. I have a 17-40mm but I wanted an even wider lens and this seems to be the best one (for cropped sensors)
I have used the Canon 10-22 for a few years now and it is great! However, I suffer from G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome) and may just have to pick up that 10-18 for video with that STM quietness! Thanks for your reviews with video AND pics.
I just purchased the Tokina 11 - 20mm from Amazon. The Focus Mechanism is not working. I am about to return it... I really NEED the f/2.8 because most of my photos and video work is in dark night clubs. I will go purchase the Canon 10 - 18mm instead. I seem to have problems with NON CANON lenses. I also have the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. It focuses too slow for what I do. I rented the Tokina 11 - 16 from Adorama to test to see if I would like it before I purchased the Tokina and I loved it. Now my lens arrives in the mail and it's not working.... UGGGGGG!!!! So I will STICK TO CANON LENSES!!!! Thank you for your ALWAYS PROFESSIONAL AND HELPFUL REVIEWS. They are much needed and appreciated.
Thank you! this is the best video on youtube displaying the auto focus noise! a lot of other reviewers either skip this issue or don't compare the sounds! I'll be getting the 10-18 for the silence :)
Very good review. Had to hit the subscribe. I just got the Sigma 17-50mm but I am missing that wide angle so this review was very helpful. Keep 'em coming.
What about the Sigma 10-20? I want an ultra wide to start with landscapes and I've seen the Sigma 10-20, Canon 10-18 and the Tokina you mentioned. The fact is: I red a lot of nice reviews about the Canon 10-18(as you said no reasons to consider the 10-22) but it's way cheaper and "plasticky" so I wonder: if I have the budget would the Sigma/Tokina be better or the Canon price is just fooling me for no reason? What do you think of the Sigma?
Greatly appreciate this video. I will be purchasing the Canon 10-18mm after much debate and watching this video. Definitely cleared it up for me, and allowed me the ability to make a sound choice. Great work, you have a new subscriber from here on out! - James, DJMP
I am using a canon 18-135 IS STM ...and i can it's a very silent a razor sharp new technology lens ..the 10-18 will surely do good job ..thanks for the video
if I already have 10-18mm, would the 11-16mm F/2.8 Tokina be worth the upgrade cost? Sometimes I can't setup a light and vlog in lower light conditions. Since I record at 24fps, I run 1/50, but with the 10-18mm, that means the widest aperture I can run is F/4.5 which makes me have to use 400ISO or 800ISO. I'd like to be able to use 200ISO at least.
The 10-22 f3.5-4.5 USM is the classic alrounder; good range, and good aperture. The 10-18 f4.5-5.6 IS STM is a good entry level UWA that is small, lightweight, cheap and the STM is great for videos, but limited zoom range and limited low light. The Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is great for wide aperture, but very limited range.
Nice breakdown on the lenses, so excited I just bought my 10-18mm lens online about to get it this week. Thank you man. I ant wait to do my vlogs with it.
In my view the 10-18 has too many issues with flaring and ghosting of light sources, be it windows or light bulbs. I have owned the 10-18 for 2 years and recently purchased the 10-22 and the ghosting has completely disappeared from my interior real estate photography meaning i spend much less time in post fixing the ghosting,, the extra $300 for the 10-22 over the 10-18 is worth it for the time savings in post production.
If I do have a bad lens, I'm not the only one, the online research I have done seems to indicate that it is a fairly common issue, especially within the real estate photography sector.
ep I tested the 10-18 from canon and tested with sigma 10-20 and tokina 11-16... 10-18 has problems with light bulb flares sun and in some cases ghosting ... but I will buy it anyway is a cheep lens and very sharp, I like the macro shoots to:)) I shoot landscape so it will wor for me, but if anyone work with direct light I don't recommended
Agree. Unfortunately I haven't tried the other lenses and I'm itching to resolve this. The flare is in about 50% of my interior real estate shots. Outside it's not as much a problem with the lens hood, but I'm not as happy with my 10-18mm as all these reviewers seem to be but it's when comparing to the other limited choices for a crop.
Great, very illustrative content, thanks! Two years after this video, would you still recommend the 10-18mm as an add on to an APS-C setup or as a travel lens?
Thank you so much for your answer, after watching this video and the full review I am convinced and I'm heading to the photo store to purchase one. Thanks again an keep doing videos!
I assumed that the new Canon would be a "cheaper" lens than the Tokina because of the brand premium bit. But looking at that chormatic aberration from the Tokina... it just put off buying it! I fount it second hand for 165 euros, vs 225 for the Canon brand new. I think I'll save up for the Canon.
Those first two photos you showed (the mountain range/fence and the flowers) were those images straight from the camera or was there touching up in lightroom?
Hi, I am a nikon user so do not have the option to go with canon 10-18mm (i wish i could have a canon camera especially for wide angle lens), anyways...please could you advise whether i can go ahead with the (Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX II AF 11 - 16 mm f/2.8). I want a wide angle lens which will last for atleast a decade with me and i can use it for any landscape shoot. Please comment, thanks :)
Just got a used 10-22mm at KEH excellent rate at $117.00 for my R7. it is a bargain lens. It is super fast and images are clear. I did look at those kit lens RF for the R7 but build quality is not compared to the old EF-S lens.
i know you can get the nikon mount for the tokina are there any other good ultrawides in the same price range for nikon mount that you might get instead of the tokina
PhotoRec Toby I´m in that doubt too(nikon)... i´m considering the Sigma 10-20 F3.5 too... I´ve heard/read a lot of flare issues on the tokina, do you think that this is a deal breaker? Once i really like landscape photo?!
If I want to try some nature wide angle photography and have a small budget would it be better to start with the canon 10-18 or the 24 prime in your opinion?
Jeanette Kalchik You have the 18-55 or 18-135 now? how often do you wish you could go wider than 18? If often get the 10-18 otherwise get the 24mm prime. (which prime are we talking about? ruclips.net/video/nzUujWJmz_Y/видео.html)
I have been looking for a wide angel lens for more than a year. I have a Canon 7D camera and still only have the 18-55mm kit lens. I would like to buy an EF lens due to eventual camera upgrade. What lens would you recommend in the EF wide angel range?
Fantastic video, thanks for making this. I've got a really tough decision as to which lens to get.... I'm going to Iceland soon and want to take photos of the Northern Lights if we are lucky enough to see them whilst there. Having had a look on flickr there are some absolutely amazing shots with the Tokina, and obviously hardly any with the 10-18 due to the aperture difference (such a shame Canon couldn't make this lens 2.8 but then I guess the price would be a lot higher).. our trip is for a week, and then when I get home I will be shooting landscape shots between dawn, day and dusk, in England, UK... so I wouldn't neccessarily _need_ the Tokina back home.... What do you think I should do ? I could hire the Tokina for Iceland and buy the Canon when I come back from our trip I guess, but I don't know whether to just buy the Tokina and save having to spend money on hiring a lens just for Iceland.
I have a question. I have a sony A3000 mirrorless and a adaptor for canon efs. Will this work manually well on my camera ?? I don't really care about the auto focus
Thanks for your really useful video, of all the reviews on the 10-18mm lens, I found this to be the most informative. A wide angle lens is something I have been sitting on the fence on for a while, mainly justifying the cost. Helps that the 10-18mm is the same filter size (67mm) as 18-135mm, saving lots on extra filters! Could I just ask, how does the 10-18mm perform on long exposures, I know you said no starry skies, but what about dawn and dusk shots? PS. Sorry but I don't shop from B&H, mostly due to the customs charges that I'd be dealing with. Believe Amazon UK also give commissions? Not sure about DigitalRev or Onestopdigital?
I will have some thoughts to share about this in my write up coming later this week but I still go Canon 10-18 unless you REALLY want 8mm. Downsides of sigma - no filters and it is pricey.
Good morning there, would like your honest opinion bro. sigma 10-20, tamron 10-24, tokina 11-16 and the tokina 12-24.. between the four 3rd party lenses.. which suits me most? i am doing weddings, outdoors/landscaping and a lil bit of video. am using a nikon d7100. thanks :)
For the money the 10-18 gives you great versatility. For the quality and low light performance the 14mm would be my second choice. Manual focus only though.
Here in the UK, the Sigma/C 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II is cheaper to rent than the Tokina 11-16. Have you come across the Sigma ? Your opinion please.
Great video! What would you recommend as being the most cost effective Camera and Lens for a vlogger, a lot of moving objects at times, and still videos too? Ideally, I want a Canon 70D with the 10-18 lens but is there a cheaper one that can get the job done?
Hi Toby,I looked at your review on the Sigma 17-70. Thank you for that. I'm now thinking of buying one. Here where i live i can buy a refurbished one for 400 US or the older version for around 300 US. Is the newer version much better than the last should i save myself a hundred US and go with the older model? What would you do?
So is the Canon 10-18 a complete no show for night photography? Star trails and such? I have a 24mm F/2.8 STM already. So really not sure whether I need Tokina because the CA there is just too high.
I am looking for a wide angle camera to shoot an action scene with my canon t3i. Do you think canon 10-18mm will be OK? The action scene itself will be taken at the small forest where (maybe) i won't get enough light at the daylight. Or should i save more and go with Tokina 11-16mm?
Hi i have canon 650d and im looking for a wide angle lens for landscapes shooting, im not gonna shoot any stars. i saw there is a Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM lens but im not sure which lend is better for me - the one above or the tokina 11-16 thanx for ur help. Shay.
I guess this question has already been partly answered, but how does it optically compare to Canon's two lenses, the 10-18 & 10-22 - in terms of sharpness/clarity and flare. Is it worth the extra cost? Given the higher price point I would take the better build quality and more useful zoom range as given. Thanks.
hey there, can you tell me which one to get on an apsc sensor? Rokinon 10mm f2.8 tokina 11-16 f2.8 Rokinon 14mm f2.8 I intend to be doing some star trails and landscapes
Good preview , but not a complete one you could've commented and showed the distortions as well as the sharpness differences in the corners among the lenses . Also commented on the flare , which I think canon 10-22 has the lowest . The colors .etc
Tom YLY Let me share my experience as a vlogger. My standard setup is Canon 800D with the 10-18mm. Works very well outdoors and when you have natural light. I was struggling indoors in lower light conditions. I move around a lot and don’t want to carry additional lighting. So I got the Tokina 11-16 for indoor vlogging, because of the 2.8f. This latest video was recorded indoors without any additional lighting. I am very happy with the result. ruclips.net/video/ofcLrKcIIGo/видео.html
Toby, is there a fast wide angle lens at an affordable price? For example, i'm thinking about shooting a sequence in a "low-light" situation. I can go with the 50mm but the focus changes can be a mess!
I mean wide apertures! Wide like 18 or 35 for example. 50 mm 1.4 is really nice, but not for shooting with camera movement it gets difficult to control de focus
I don't really take many indoor photos. Looking for more of a Landscape lens and trying to get into night/star photography. I already have a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. Which of the 10-18 or the 11-16 would you recommend? Or would you maybe recommend a prime lens (ie 20mmf2.8)?
What about the Canon 10-22mm working at f3.5 compared the 10-18mm being f4.5? Surely you pay a little more for that extra ability to function better in low light situations?
Hi Toby, I have 70d + 18-135mm lens. I like to shoot landscape a lot and start consider to buy a wide angle lens. Do you still recommend I buy 10-18mm? What's pros that 10-18mm over 18-135mm besides the wider angle? Is image quality better? sharper? Appreciate you thoughts in advance
I have a Canon EOS 5D Mark111 with EF 24-105 mm lens. I have recently taken up photography as a hobby and am looking for a good Wide-Angle lens for my camera. I would like to know which one to buy as I know nothing about lenses.
When you were shooting the interior shots, what camera were you using? 70d? Im confused as to why the tokina at 2.8 didnt look as shallow as it should. I have a t4i and the tokina that i use for real estate photography. I've noticed that my shots arent as detailed as I want them to be. Would you say the canon 10-18 is more detailed, sharper images than the tokina? Oh, and I almost always am at f8 or even 11 when I shoot interiors.
Chris Eye I was using the 70D and at the smaller apertures f/8 and above found both to be very sharp. When shooting at wider focal lengths it is rare to really see shallow depth of field- the wider the focal length the wider your depth of field even when shooting at f/2.8. What camera are you using?
Chris Eye What ISOs are those shots at? And are you happy with other shots with other lenses when carefully inspected? I am just trying to figure out if it is overall detail or depth of field detail that is causing the issue.
CameraRec Toby I try to keep the iso at 100, but not more than 400. My 40mm images look pretty good, but i never use that lens for real estate so the shots are meant to have a more shallow dof. With the Tokina, I feel it's not sharp enough in the back of the image even at an f8 or higher. Examples can be seen at www.caiphotos.com
I actually bought the 10-18 for real estate photography and had to return it. It consistently made a magenta ghosting effect at windows, chandeliers and any bright spot in the photo. I bought a used 10-22 and was much happier. No ghosting on the old 10-22.
Best comparison video between 10-18 & 11-16
Is the 10-18 still usable? Or is there a way to mitigate the lense flares?
@@luisungredda9029 yes, it is 100% usable. I used the 10-18 professionally for years and it is easy enough to edit out the lens flares. They typically show up around unshaded light sources like chandeliers. I still have one of my shooters using the 10-18 daily for property shoots. I personally use the 10-22 now if on a crop canon and my 15mm Loawa if on my full frame sony. It just saves me a bit of time not editing out the flares but again its not every picture, just when pointed at an open light source. Hope that helps,
@@ThePhotoForce thanks my man
@@nishanketbaniya9476 really depends on what kind of work you are planning to do with it.
This is such a great video! Hands down satisfied every curiosity I had at the moment. Thanks for being so detailed.
As always, you're reviews are spot on and so helpful!
I've had the Tokina for several years and I don't go anywhere without it. Great lens and love the f2.8 feature of it.
@Lathrop Logistics not so much . It definitely makes some sound but not that terrible.
I've been looking at reviews for the 10-18mm lens and this review is the best because you show how close you can get compared to the others. Thanks!
Which on would you recommend for filming shortfilms and landscape fotography? 10 - 18 because of the IS or the 11 - 16 because of the f 2.8?
I love the 10-22mm look. I guess when it all comes down to it, it's what appeals to you and defines your own style.
Great video! I’m using the 10-18mm for my real estate videos. Love the ultra wide angle capabilities it offers. Thanks!
If you use the Canon for photography, make sure you have light or a flash.
jetblakink Agree. I am a vlogger. I use canon 10-18mm for daylight and the Tokina 11-16 for low light conditions.
Coach Bay How is the 11-16 for daily vlogging.
PhotoRec TV I’ve a ronin s and canon 10-18 but I’m unsatisfied with it and I’m looking to buy the Tokina 11-16 :/
Sir can we use canon apsc lenses with fujifilm cameras ?
I just bought a 10-18 Canon and a Canon 70D so Im very happy with this video :D
+Jakub Duroska Nice!
Jakub Duroska how is the combination?
Max Dostert Its great. Highly recommend
Thank you so much!:)
@100adventurer - Which lens did you go with? How has it been?
Thanks a lot for the detailed review. I was confused between 10-188mm and 10-22mm since the former has a plastic mount. This review helped me a lot. Going for the 10-18mm.
I'm looking for a wide angle to have a better reach at shooting fireworks shows. I'm not sure if I should pick the Tokina, on of the Canons or even the Sigma 10-20mm. What would you recommend ? I don't like the fact that the 10-18mm Canon is full plastic.
Then according to you the best lens is the canon 10-18?
I have that lens and I wanted to buy new tokina 11 20 mm 2.8
Now I changed idea. I remain with my old cheap 10-18.
Thanks
Are they good for real estate
I own the 10 - 22 for about a year and I think if I had to choose once again, I would still buy the 10 - 22. USM is more trustworthy than STM with my 7D, more light than 10 - 18 and, don't forget, that 22 mm on crop sensor is about 35 on FF - which is wide standard and works pretty good in repo.
Hi Toby, I hadn't heard of your channel before today. Whilst looking at sample images from members of a forum, I came across a link to this comparison. Was very useful, thank you. I shall be subscribing!
Gareth Fallon Wonderful. Where did you hear about me? Thanks!
The aperture will matter for video though.
Yeah the high aperture is my fear for indoor video even with controlled lighting. I’m so used to 1.8 or 2.8 that 4.5 is scaring me off the 18-10
@@TheBrokenMeeple No need to be. I can handheld a 1 second photo with it! It's actually better in low light than the others due to stabilisation.
thanks for this demo comparison
the 10-18 is still an impressive little gem of a lens
Which one would you choose for milky way landscape astrophotography if you had the choice between the Tokina 11-16 and the Canon 10-18 ?
The Tokina has a constant aperture of 2.8, meaning that you will get anywhere from 1-2 stops more light. This could mean dropping the ISO down from 3200 to 1600 or even 800! In my opinion, this makes it better for astrophotography :)
Unfortunately I had two Tokina 11-16 now, both with sharpening problems in infinity. I now got myself a Sigma 10-22mm f/3.5
I'll see tonight if it's a good choice.
them0rtn let me know how the sigma's like :)
I got mine for 399€, so I guess it's still in a good price range and an alternative for the Canon 10-22
halitic so, why is bad Tokina? I need some one for my landscape, I have a Nikon 3400, but now I'm confusing
What's the proper lens hood for the 10-22 Canon 80D?
You bet!
Excellent lens especially given the low price point. I have used it for video and photography and never noticed the noise of it's focusing system.
Terrific review,Toby. You answered exactly what I was wondering and wanted to know...
What do you think of the Sigma?
hey Toby,.. i have a question, i need a wide angle lens,.. which of these two you recommend for me???
Canon 10-18 stm. or Sigma 10-18 3.5 ???
Canon!
Greatly appreciate this video. I will be purchasing the Canon 10-18mm after much debate and watching this video. Definitely cleared it up for me, and allowed me the ability to make a sound choice. Great work, you have a new subscriber from here on out! - James, DJMP
I thought the Canon 10-18 was optimized for crop sensor cameras? Do you still have to multiply?
yes you still have to multiply .... 10-18 stands for 16-29 in FF terms
Yes - the 11-16 would be really helpful in those situations.
What camera and lens did you use to shoot yourself on this vid? It looks excellent!
I'm an absolute noob with these lenses and this video was great.
Nice breakdown on the lenses, so excited I just bought my 10-18mm lens online about to get it this week. Thank you man. I ant wait to do my vlogs with it.
Hi. What about the Canon 11-24mm f4l usm lens. I see that it cost 2,899 $. What does it offer so that it cost that much. Thanks.
It's for full frame. Which means it's TRUE 11mm WITH the image quality better. Although I still think it's overpriced.
Image sample comes at 09:11
Did just buy Canon 10-18. Going to do some filming so I need that stabilization. Just hoping that F stops will be enough for me.
Dimitri T how is it 5 months later?
RDaze Its light and works well. Quiet focus and stabilisation is a plus. I like it a lot.
Haven't started my main project yet. But made some test videos on my channel
Thank you for your review. You helped me make a definitive decision on purchasing the 10-18
Please guide me...
Canon 10-18, 10-22 and Tokina 11-16, what is the best lens for video and photography?
In my view the 10-18 has too many issues with flaring and ghosting of light sources, be it windows or light bulbs. I have owned the 10-18 for 2 years and recently purchased the 10-22 and the ghosting has completely disappeared from my interior real estate photography meaning i spend much less time in post fixing the ghosting,, the extra $300 for the 10-22 over the 10-18 is worth it for the time savings in post production.
Interesting. I wonder if you had a bad copy.
+César Martínez it's still an excellent lens yes
Thank you so much for your answer, after watching this video and the full review I am convinced and I'm heading to the photo store to purchase one. Thanks again an keep doing videos!
10:06 hand held - WOW!
Great review you are a pro! Question:
What set up did you use to film this review?
Thank you for this. I do have a question. If I wanna shoot landscape and do a bit of lowlight video would you recommend I just get the tokina?
low light - get the Tokina
PhotoRec TV can I get a Tokina for landscape (day and night) and videos?
Did you use a lens hood with the 10-18?
Thank you for sharing. I just bought this lens. I subbed.
Thanks for the sub! Appreciated.
great video, i'm saving up for 10-18stm!
Between the 3 lenses. Which lens would you prefer to do a group photo for wedding?
Sufian Hanif Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 so if group shot is in lower light you can open aperture without raising ISO.
PhotoRec Toby thanks toby.
PhotoRec Toby can you tell me whats the difference between dx and dxii?
i know you can get the nikon mount for the tokina
are there any other good ultrawides in the same price range for nikon mount that you might get instead of the tokina
Epicmeerkat99 The Tokina would be my pick.
thankyou
PhotoRec Toby
I´m in that doubt too(nikon)... i´m considering the Sigma 10-20 F3.5 too...
16-35 F/4 Much more expensive but excellent quality and full frame compatible.
Thank you very much :)
I would like your view on the Sigma 8-16mm lens plus the 10-18mm in comparison. What would you recommend?
I will have some thoughts to share about this in my write up coming later this week but I still go Canon 10-18 unless you REALLY want 8mm. Downsides of sigma - no filters and it is pricey.
Good morning there, would like your honest opinion bro. sigma 10-20, tamron 10-24, tokina 11-16 and the tokina 12-24.. between the four 3rd party lenses.. which suits me most? i am doing weddings, outdoors/landscaping and a lil bit of video. am using a nikon d7100. thanks :)
trying to decide between the 10-18, roki 14mm and roki 8mm for filming skateboarding and just general use. any thoughts?
JB talks don’t get the 70d imo because it doesn’t do 60fps
The sl2 is great
Hi Toby,I looked at your review on the Sigma 17-70.
+Aditya Akhauri I have used it for stars but very difficult to setup and conditions need to be just about perfect. Tokina is much better here.
+PhotoRec Toby Was it like a focussing difficulty? If you could kindly elaborate, it would really help. :)
+Aditya, I actually have the 10-18mm
However my friend told me about her 24mm pancake edition. Would you recommend that for a Wide lens?
Hi. May I ask if I can use Canon 10-22mm lens in canon eos m3 using an adapter? Thank youuu
Yes! You can with an adapter.
I am looking for a wide angle camera to shoot an action scene with my canon t3i. Do you think canon 10-18mm will be OK? The action scene itself will be taken at the small forest where (maybe) i won't get enough light at the daylight. Or should i save more and go with Tokina 11-16mm?
+augusta wicaksono if u shoot action scenes you always!! need fast lenses. f/2.8,f/2.0,f/1.8,f/1.4
Hi i have canon 650d and im looking for a wide angle lens for landscapes shooting, im not gonna shoot any stars.
i saw there is a Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM lens but im not sure which lend is better for me - the one above or the tokina 11-16
thanx for ur help.
Shay.
I guess this question has already been partly answered, but how does it optically compare to Canon's two lenses, the 10-18 & 10-22 - in terms of sharpness/clarity and flare. Is it worth the extra cost? Given the higher price point I would take the better build quality and more useful zoom range as given. Thanks.
It is worth the extra cost. Sharper and faster with that maximum aperture of f/2.8.
I'm thinking about a Panasonic G7 with a lens mount adapter to canon ef/efs. is the 10-18 worth it with no aperture control due to the adapter?
+KyleIsReal I don't think so - It is also focus by wire so you might lose focus with a dumb adapter too. Just get a nice M4/3 lens.
ok I'll look!
I have the G7, great deal on the camera
hey there,
can you tell me which one to get on an apsc sensor?
Rokinon 10mm f2.8
tokina 11-16 f2.8
Rokinon 14mm f2.8
I intend to be doing some star trails and landscapes
Rokinon 10
Good preview , but not a complete one
you could've commented and showed the distortions as well as the sharpness differences in the corners among the lenses . Also commented on the flare , which I think canon 10-22 has the lowest . The colors .etc
which one is best for vlogging?
Tom YLY Let me share my experience as a vlogger. My standard setup is Canon 800D with the 10-18mm. Works very well outdoors and when you have natural light. I was struggling indoors in lower light conditions. I move around a lot and don’t want to carry additional lighting. So I got the Tokina 11-16 for indoor vlogging, because of the 2.8f. This latest video was recorded indoors without any additional lighting. I am very happy with the result. ruclips.net/video/ofcLrKcIIGo/видео.html
Hope this helps!
Toby, is there a fast wide angle lens at an affordable price? For example, i'm thinking about shooting a sequence in a "low-light" situation. I can go with the 50mm but the focus changes can be a mess!
How wide? How fast? and when you say fast you mean wide apertures or fast to focus?
I mean wide apertures! Wide like 18 or 35 for example. 50 mm 1.4 is really nice, but not for shooting with camera movement it gets difficult to control de focus
I don't really take many indoor photos. Looking for more of a Landscape lens and trying to get into night/star photography. I already have a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. Which of the 10-18 or the 11-16 would you recommend? Or would you maybe recommend a prime lens (ie 20mmf2.8)?
Might be worth redoing this review but with the modern equivalents.
The Tokina 11-16mm CF atx-i 2019 is awesome
I agree - there are several new wide angle lenses that I would like to test soon.
Which one of these lenses is better in terms of image quality like chromatic aberration , distortion and so on ..
john al-otaibi They all suffer from distortion but I found the Canon 10-18 to be the best overall quality.
What about the Canon 10-22mm working at f3.5 compared the 10-18mm being f4.5? Surely you pay a little more for that extra ability to function better in low light situations?
10-18 has image stabilizer.
Hi! I’ve been thinking about buying the 10-18mm but I just wanted to know first if it’s any good for portraits??
