As a long time ultra wide angle lens fanatic, I'd like to offer some advice that I find really helps: Treat UWA lenses in a similar way to how you would treat a fast prime wide open, only instead of isolating your subject in focus, you are isolating the subject in space. Don't try to capture an entire scene like a panorama, that will just look flat, lifeless and boring. Find a subject for your photo, like a tree, stone, fence post, and use the wide lens to push everything else in the image way back.
I'll add to that, use leading lines to help lead the eye through the frame, and have subjects at different distances at the power points for the rule of thirds. If you find UWA intimidating, force yourself to use it as much as you can, emulate what others have done, and most importantly, experiment like crazy, eventually you'll train your eye and it will become a lens that is fun to shoot. I love my Voigtlander 15III.
You're probably my favorite youtube personality when it comes to photography videos. The videos on many other channels come off as either conceited, condescending, or completely jaded. Keep up the good work!
The EF-S Canon 10-18 is one of the main reasons I still keep my T3i around. It's great for run and gun landscapes. Simple inexpensive kit I can toss in the center console of my car and grab a shot if I see something cool while out driving. I've heard it's a great vlogging lens too.
Holy crap, perfect timing, just got the canon wide angle! And I must say, when it comes to these lens it’s AAAAAAALL about a singular subject!, fully pulled in and a loud single subject! 😀
Amen, brother. A good photo is about one thing. It's the beauty and the fun of using ultrawides, very satisfying to make a single interesting person or object the main subject and include however much of the background you want. Playing with space.
The reason why I - and millions of others - still shoot Canon : the lenses. The 10-18mm is perfectly good and cheap as chips. Fuji owners have to shell out nearly a grand for the same. Yes the Fuji is better made, but the best lens is the one you can afford to buy.
Like Saurat wrote the Fuji's way more expensive with a better build quality & the Fuji is way sharper than the Canon APSC ultra wide zooms. I owned the more expensive Canon EF-S 10-24mm & really enjoyed it & would even put it at par or better the Canon 17-40 L on FF but the Fuji blows them away & I really wanted to hate it. Its not weather resistant & its not a 2.8. My plan was to stick with primes but the images I kept seeing from that lens blew me away so I ended up buying it in the end & its pretty great.
Fujinon lenses have been around nearly as long as canon, they have been making Cine lenses that cost nearly as much as a house for many years before they started making mirrorless prosumer cameras. I feel like their X-mount system has some of that legacy behind it. I hope they put some of their IS tech into IBIS in the future.
Buy F Mount lenses and even if you change 35mm systems your lenses are not automatically obsoleted. That’s a vast and valuable real option value there.
I live in a wide open water view modest cabin home. I walked out back after getting this Nikon 10mm to 20mm lens which was cheap used. It was mint condition and I paired it with the Nikon D5300 my twin had given me...keeping in mind I do have a Sony A73 with 4 lenses for photography. I took that Nikon D5300 out back during a brilliant sunset, pinks, purples and sun rays. IT KILLED IT! I am part of a photography group online where most of them have all the expensive gear...they flipped out over my pictures I have been posting with that lens! I have photos published in a book I took with the Nikkor 70m to 300mm lens on that camera. People are painting some of my photographs! I took a crystal clear landscape style photo of a marina in bright sun with zero issues not a single area had any less then perfect focus...I was shocked! I could sell that so easily!! It is gorgeous! Its not just your gear but the photographer behind it. Knowing how to get the most out of our lenses we can afford. Not everyone can replace cameras or buy these brand new $2,000 lenses today...I encourage others to take another look at used gear that may set them up with better work and once they can save up, then get the best if that is what they can manage later. So to summarize, my experience is yes on only low light but if you see good colors it will perform with your other settings done correctly.
Concerning those two millimeters: Crop factors. Canon: 1,6. Nikon 1,5. So: Canon 16-29, Nikon 15-30. 1mm in both ends for Nikon. Sincerely, a Nikon guy. B)
I use the Canon lens and it's great despite being cheap as chips - sad that Nikon have closed out users of older/ cheaper cameras AGAIN this from the company that was once proud that all Nikon glass would fit the F mount... Nikon user since 1977.....
I have the Canon 10-22mm and it's an excellent lens to have taking pictures of wide vistas. I'm mostly concerned about the linearity of the horizon when shooting and have to adjust position to make sure the horizon is straight otherwise the image will be distorted. Great video. I didn't notice any vignetting which wide angle lenses usually have
When I opted for the Canon 80D vs. going with the 6D mkII this year, I added the 10-18mm to my kit, and while it might feel a bit embarrassing in the hand, it performs quite well on the camera.
I am a Nikon user and have the 10-20mm lens. It takes very clear photos, especially on a sunny day. Like any wide angle lens they are designed to capture a lot so you need to use a large dof. You will get the best images especially landscape at between f8-f16. Also you need your camera set to matrix metering not spot or centre weighted. Get your camera settings correct and you will be able to take some amazingly clear and beautiful photos. With so many reviews I see, this one is an exception, people say this lens is crap or that lens is crap, focusing is not good, etc, etc. A lot of times they just have not set the camera correctly for the lens and subject that they are trying to photograph. I can also get some amazingly good photos with my kit lens that I still have the 18-55mm. Get your settings correct and you will get good clear photos with most modern lenses these days.
I just have to say, I love your videos! Most camera review videos are either cheesy or too technical. I feel yours are informative and I don't feel intimidated by the lingo. Thanks so much for posting!!
Great Video. Love this style of shoot out. I have the canon 10-18 on my 700D and i love the portability and quality for the low price. My favourite lens at the moment.
Very enjoyable. Fuji does make the 10-24 (15-36 equivalent). I find ultrawides incredibly useful indoors in tight spaces - of course real estate agents love them, but for my purposes they're wonderful also for shooting music rehearsals, shooting crowds and exhibitors at indoor art and craft shows, and for shooting in school classrooms, where you can frame a nice close-up of a child at work or interacting with a teacher (not too close to the edges of the frame!), and still show the surrounding environment.
I could test theses lens on my own. Despite the fact that canon was full of dust and stains out of the box, the af was a bit faster but not significant. on the other hand, the nikon came in absolutely perfekt state out of the box. after testing both on canon / Nikon camera, it was clear to me that the nikon offer a better sharpness and much clearer picture . i hade more problems with canon so i swapped all my gear to nikon and i do really enjoy now.
Good to hear about the 10-18mm from canon I have been considering getting this lens for a while for my 1300D and after watching your video I think it will be great for the system, as I don't want to spend much on this system I own. My money is going into my Hasselblad setup for my large print work, this canon is more of a travel and scouting camera :)
Wife has D3300 with the 3 AF-P lens kit and she uses the 10-20 most. I have a honkin Nikon rig but steal her little set whenever I can. Now that Canon sensors are catching up, I’m eyeing the SL2. I want that canon 24mm pancake - something important to me that Nikon does not have in DX. Add this 11-18 and I’m set for a handy little day rig. We may end up with both of these.... a timely segment.
Great comparison Chris! Excellent down-to-earth explanation of the visual effects of using wide-angle lenses. Sounds like the howling 10 degree winds of the New York City canyons pale in comparison to Alberta. Great review! Thank you.
45 seconds in and I have to say it - gorgeous scenery! Awesome video work as well Jordan. And to Chris, great photo at 11:30, reminded me of the Overlook Hotel from The Shining
Oly has the 9-18mm for m43. One of the most compact wide zooms on the market. Definitely has some shortcomings as far as optical quality, but it is in the category you're talking about. Perhaps it's not quite wide enough though to throw in with these guys.
Great review as usual.. Love you guys. I am actually using the 10-18mm adapted to a Sony a6000 the auto focus isn't great, but with the focus peaking it works pretty well as a lightweight fourth camera setup that is super cheap and extremely lightweight.
I loved the video comparing these two lens. I use a Canon 90d and of course the Canon 10-18mm. Have not shot a lot with it yet, but i will go to a village soon here in Honduras to hopefully get some good shots. I will post them soon. What mode were you shooting in? Manual or AV? I shoot in AV mode, because i am not yet fast enough or knowledgeable enough to go full manual.
Worth mentioning is that 10mm on a Nikon 1.5 crop is going to result in a wider angle of view than 10mm on a Canon 1.6 crop. And why were all your Nikon examples so massively colour-shifted to yellow?
Thought the lack of wide angle comment for mirrorless was odd. The Panasonic 7-14mm f4 is a great lens as is the Olympus 9-18mm. For more money the Leica 8-18 mm is outstanding and takes filters. Also the Olympus 7-14mm f2.8mm is a good weather sealed lens. There are many prime options. So for M43rds your very well covered.
Chris was referring to affordable wide angle options. All those lenses you mentioned are fantastic, but cost 2-3X what the Canon and Nikon budget options do. Jordan @ TCSTV
Sorry for the confusion. Your correct, I keep forgetting that I got my Panasonic 7-14mm USED for $300. The new prices are at $800 (usd). And the olympus is $600 new vs Canon $300 new. That is quite a difference. It also only cost me $10 to modify the back of the 7-14mm with the 8mm rear part to take 22mm gel filters. Thank you again for the video. Even though I will not buy these lenses the general comments on wide angle photography were good and adding general comments like thes to all videos I think is a good idea.
10-18mm is not very good against bright light - that green flare has ruined many of my shots. When shooting towards Sun, I always switch to 18-135, which handles it much better.
Ultra Wide lens is great for indoor use like in museums and so on, but I too have a hard time using one outdoors unless I just happen to be in an awesome place with nothing but beauty in every inch of the scene. Otherwise, I end up with the subject appearing too far away or something ugly/out of place in the scene. If possible, being closer to the subject certainly helps. I do like to have a very wide zoom available for certain scenes, but I honestly don't use it that much.
When I was in Mountains of Tennessee...I used a 70-200 f2.8 and shot 6 images that I combined into a panorama.....it allows you to keep the size scale properly and increase the overall resolution. Wide angle to me is more for beach sunsets/sunrises and architecture.
As i concern even if the ultra wide angle doenst feel bad according to nature shoots like this, its "natural habitat" is a high monument or giving your pics a creative perspective among other things, but good video
I think you should have mentioned the 10-18f4 Sony , its sure not cheap. Atleast f4 though. And , AS af isnt all that important with mirrorless and wideangle, the samyang 12mm f2 is really worth mention ing. Fixed at that angle is a versatility concern and 2mm matter, but ID take that lowlight ultrawide any day over these2
Considering the Tokina 11-20 pro DXii is double the price but has lesser distortion and is wide open throughout at 2.8… would you say it is worth? Built quality and astrophotography being my major concerns
super video, maybe a sigma/tamron in the mix would have been excelent! but since I have nikon, now I know the good and the bad about that lense! Thanks!!
I have also that. I love it. There is some barrel distortion in the wide angle. If needed I use this program to correct it: www.epaperpress.com/ptlens/ It was something like $25 with free trial. Canon's own software does not work with JPGs.
Okaro X Cool! I’ll check it out. I mostly shoot RAW and correct in Lightroom, but it sounds interesting. It’s definitely one of my favorite lenses. I’ve really been surprised by the M lens lineup. They’re cheap and give you good results if you can handle their short comings. I would like to see them come out with more primes with the same build quality.
Hey. I have Nikon D3300. I am doubting between TOKINA 11-16mm vs NIKON Nikkor 10-20mm. I need it for landscapes and real state shootings. And second question. Tokina is 104° and Nikon Nikkor is 109° is that 5° alot or not for small spaces? Sorry for my english. I want to buy best for hiking and open spaces (mountains) and for shooting apartments. Thank you! (Explain please difference if you know this new Nikon nikkor lenses!? Will tokina have automatic focus on my camera d3300 and will it have automatic focus on this nikon 10-20mm nikkor? Thank you so much keep good work!
Hi Guys, Thanks for the great review! I am considering the Nikon version. Just wondering if you can recommend a good apsc wide angle for astrophotography? (Nikon mount) I have seen good reviews re the Rokinon 16mm f2, wondering if the 14mm or 12mm work well? Cheers, enjoy your videos!
Hey does your wife have a site on some of her photography that would be nice to see. Your stuff is always amazing so I wonder how well she would do. Either way thank you I've seen you guys do shows together and you guys make a good team
Hello Jordan how are you? I'm curious what kind of Wireless lapel Chris is using here, in the opening shots I heard some hiss at times which is unusual. I ask because I've reviewed a very affordable good sounding one on my channel recently and I'm trying to see the differences between high end and consumer-grade models. Also I think a fun idea for an episode would be for you and Chris do a head-to-head competition with photography and video. you both might realize you know more than you give yourself credit for each other's discipline. Now let me get back to watching this episode. Peace
Yeah even more expensive UWA lenses have that issue wide open. There are only a few exceptions like the Canon 11-24 mm / F 4,0 EF L USM... but that thing cost a fortune.
hello bro.. which camera bodies did u use here to campare those two lenses canon and nikon?? reply me please.. i need to know the camera model of canon and nikon
Cheap Fuji Lens, something like a 10-18 XC 4.5-6.3? Would be cool, yes. But first V2 of the 10-24 f4 please with WR and a aperture ring with hard stops.
Great video, I am thinking about pulling the trigger on this Nikon 10-20mm. Can anyone please clarify something for me. I have just updated the firmware to version 1.02 on my Nikon d3300. Would I be right in assuming that the option for Optical VR On/Off will only appear in the shooting menu when this lens is connected?
As a long time ultra wide angle lens fanatic, I'd like to offer some advice that I find really helps:
Treat UWA lenses in a similar way to how you would treat a fast prime wide open, only instead of isolating your subject in focus, you are isolating the subject in space.

Great advice

Kevan B Are you talking about Jared? 😀😀😀
Yes, more APS-C lens head-to-head/reviews, please!
Can’t wait for the annual best and worst video!
This year should be extra special!
I wasn't thinking about that, until you mentioned it, now I can't wait.
OMG, is it that time of the year again? Time flies so fast...
My predictions: best dslr is the Nikon d850 and the best mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is the Panasonic gh5.
Drunk Jordan 😆
The EF-S Canon 10-18 is one of the main reasons I still keep my T3i around. It's great for run and gun landscapes. Simple inexpensive kit I can toss in the center console of my car and grab a shot if I see something cool while out driving. I've heard it's a great vlogging lens too.

Amen, brother. A good photo is about one thing. It's the beauty and the fun of using ultrawides, very satisfying to make a single interesting person or object the main subject and include however much of the background you want. Playing with space.
Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM gave me a several great shots, clear choice in price-performance ratio.

Loopsrainforest Why not? They're both the cheapest options on each system for a ultra wide zoom. Is there a cheaper Fuji lens that I missed?

What a perfect timing, I just ordered Pentax 15-30 and will be shooting a ton of wide shots soon :)
Concerning those two millimeters:
Crop factors.
Canon: 1,6. Nikon 1,5.
So: Canon 16-29, Nikon 15-30.
1mm in both ends for Nikon.
Sincerely, a Nikon guy. B)
Still less sharp :) Sincerely a Camera guy.
Canon also has 10-22mm lens. The 10-18 is more popular because of it's small size.
Crop factors? Are these lenses not APS-C?
Walaker Canon got slightly smaller aps-c sensors than Nikon and the others.
Tom Vestvik yes, I know, but why did you mention it? Are these lenses not made for APS-C? ;)
I use the Canon lens and it's great despite being cheap as chips - sad that Nikon have closed out users of older/ cheaper cameras AGAIN this from the company that was once proud that all Nikon glass would fit the F mount... Nikon user since 1977.....
Canada is so beautiful, I don't think I've ever wanted to travel somewhere more in my life
The grass on the other side of the fence is always greener.
Come shovel snow for me.
Would've liked to see the comparisons side by side. It would make your videos so much better.
All best.
Having just bought a Canon 10-18mm for my Canon 200D, I can not be more pleased with this video. :D
Great review and point on metering. I have found I need to push my exposure to a full step over.
Excellent video and it has swayed my decision on whether to buy the Canon lens - now ordered. Thank you
I have been hoping for this video from you guys since I bought my 10-18 a few months ago.
Thank you so much.
Thumb up for the Canon 10-18/f4.5-5.6 STM on Sony A6000 via Commlite EF-S to NEX adapter. A winner!
I’ve been using the 10-18 it’s a lot of fun
I just have to say, I love your videos! Most camera review videos are either cheesy or too technical. I feel yours are informative and I don't feel intimidated by the lingo. Thanks so much for posting!!

Great Video, from a 10-18 owner, in The Bahamas :)

Excellent review of these lenses. Made my decision far more simple.
Really enjoyed this open and honest review, will subscribe definitely 👍🏻
Great comparison and lovely pictures! You got the eye Chris!
lot of beautiful shots.
Still hanging onto my old Olympus E-1 for your old camera review.
Wife has D3300 with the 3 AF-P lens kit and she uses the 10-20 most. I have a honkin Nikon rig but steal her little set whenever I can. Now that Canon sensors are catching up, I’m eyeing the SL2. You can turn the Nikon VR stabilization off through the camera. There is a setting for that in the camera menu.
You have a fear if wide angle yet your shots turned out much better than usual :D
45 seconds in and I have to say it - gorgeous scenery! Awesome video work as well Jordan. And to Chris, great photo at 11:30, reminded me of the Overlook Hotel from The Shining
Thanks so much I was going to buy the Nikon lens for my d5100, shop said it would be fine. Lucky I came across your video. Many Thanks.
Thank you for this informatic video

Don't do much wide angle photography, this video taught me a lot!
Very nice video and incredible shots!!!
Super
I found the sigma 10-20 f3.5 is a great lens
Worth mentioning is that 10mm on a Nikon 1.5 crop is going to result in a wider angle of view than 10mm on a Canon 1.6 crop. And why were all your Nikon examples so massively colour-shifted to yellow?
Pentax has the Jun Hirakawa wonderfully designed 10-17. You should have at least mentioned it at the end.
Great wide angle comments! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Panasonic 8-18mm zoom, which is pricier, but fits into this category.
Please, do a review comparing the Canon 55-250mm STM vs Nikkor 55-200mm VR II too... Please, please!
Your channel is always super fun to watch :)
Exemplary job. Thank you!
Great one Chris, made my day.
Very informative, great video. Thank you!
Good video review- you have a very pleasant personality
can't wait for the sigma 16mm 1.4 for E!
As i concern even if the ultra wide angle doenst feel bad according to nature shoots like this, its "natural habitat" is a high monument or giving your pics a creative perspective among other things, but good video
D7200 can use this lense ?
would like to see a Leica CL vs Fuji X-E3 comparison.
I think you should have mentioned the 10-18f4 Sony , its sure not cheap. Atleast f4 though. And , AS af isnt all that important with mirrorless and wideangle, the samyang 12mm f2 is really worth mention ing. Fixed at that angle is a versatility concern and 2mm matter, but ID take that lowlight ultrawide any day over these2
They are great for group shots and getting you away from phone shooters
Chris, hate to ask but what brand are those awesome winter gloves you are wearing? Thanks.
Thanks!!
I‘m about to get a wide angle for Canon aps-c cameras, but I’m deciding between the 10-18 and the 10-22
The 10-22 is faster but lacks IS so it is better for moving subjects. You can get the 10-18 mm and 24 mm f/2.8 for the price of the 10-22 mm.
Okaro X I already have the 24mm (by the way I love it) and I’m more and more convinced about the 10-18, I found it used for 190€
Sergio Serra Well then you really do not need the reach of the 10-22. Especially if you shoot video the IS is necessary.
Okaro X I have a 50D so, video is not important to me. But the stabilizer may be useful in handheld shots!
loved your video!
Is the Nikon 10-20 lens compatible with a full-frame camera, and can we photograph people with it?
I would like to use the 10 - 18 for vlogging
I really DGAF about these lenses. Im just here cause i like your reviews.
Why not add sony e1018?
+werewolf yang The price. We just wanted to compare inexpensive ultrawide zooms.
Yeah, the Sony is over 900 bucks! I don't understand why.
Just bought the 11-22 for the EOS M. It’s cheap, light, and really sharp.
I have also that. I love it. There is some barrel distortion in the wide angle. If needed I use this program to correct it:
www.epaperpress.com/ptlens/
It was something like $25 with free trial.
I have d5200 camera,it is suitable to use wide angle lens, which one best.
hey...please review the olypmus omd em10 mark iii...pleaaaase chris
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the great review!
Either way thank you I've seen you guys do shows together and you guys make a good team
great stuff
please do review comparing Sigma 100-400mm and Tamron 100-400mm, thanks
Hello Jordan how are you? I'm curious what kind of Wireless lapel Chris is using here, in the opening shots I heard some hiss at times which is unusual. I ask because I've reviewed a very affordable good sounding one on my channel recently and I'm trying to see the differences between high end and consumer-grade models. Also I think a fun idea for an episode would be for you and Chris do a head-to-head competition with photography and video. you both might realize you know more than you give yourself credit for each other's discipline. Now let me get back to watching this episode. Peace
Could you guys make a scathing video about the 29 minute recording limit? I want to see a compact camera in 2018 without that limit.
I just going to buy a wide angle for my D5500, how do you compare the Nikkor 10-20 with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8?
I have the Canon one, is it normal that these wide lenses are noticeable softer at the edges?
+Zairon Absolutely if you shoot them wide open. Stop them down to F8 for nicer corners.
Yes, it's pretty typical that cheaper lens have soft edges. Even expensive lenses have similar issues.
Yeah even more expensive UWA lenses have that issue wide open. There are only a few exceptions like the Canon 11-24 mm / F 4,0 EF L USM... but that thing cost a fortune.
Not with the Canon 10-18. It's optically very good, and any slight softness can be corrected in post.
the 10-18 is acceptably sharp at the edges, it's still not as good as a better lens
hello bro.. which camera bodies did u use here to campare those two lenses canon and nikon?? reply me please.. i need to know the camera model of canon and nikon
Cheap Fuji Lens, something like a 10-18 XC 4.5-6.3? Would be cool, yes. But first V2 of the 10-24 f4 please with WR and a aperture ring with hard stops.
Is the nikon 10-20 a replacement of the 10-24?
No. The 10-24 is MUCH more expensive.
is Nikkor 10-20mm focus well with nikon D5200 ? please help me regarding this focusing issue
I struggle with wide angle too. I just don't see it the way I do like a 50 or 85mm for some reason and I can't find the photo in the scene.
Very good lens review. I would like to hear more about lens saturation and micro-contrast, in addition to sharpness.:-)
wow, snow & sun in Canada...
It's fog, rain, smog and darkness in Poland... can't do no shooting...
I use the sigma 10-20 4-5.6. a great lens
@TheCameraStoreTV will you make a rev about the sony alpha 9 ?
