@@cooloox I'm shooting sports with them and they are almost on par with my Sony A1 and with eye lock on the Nikon actually can see the eyes farther away! I just downloaded firmware 4.01 so I'm going to see if there are any improvements with autofocus!

I like that there are quality 3rd party lens coming out for the Z-mount now. Gives Nikon shooters a wider variety to select from. This lens looks like a solid option for a Nikon shooter with a full frame Z mount camera.
So, is it a safe idea to consider this lens instead of the 24-70 2.8? I have the 70-200 2.8 and the amazing 14-30 F4 for my Z cameras. But this beast is making me rethink the addition of the Nikon 24-70 2.8 all together. For what I see in the reviews, it's an equal image quality with more range and versatility.
I have never been tempted to buy third party lenses, this one is a game changer. I am traveling a lot and love high quality pictures that differentiate from smart phone pictures. This lens makes that fact obvious.
Hello...have you tried the Nikkor Z 24-120 f/4 S lens? I can say with confidence that it is quite sharp and operates flawlessly (at least on a Z7 or Z8). I'm sure you'll enjoy either lens.
I'm just glad as a Nikon Z user that Nikon has finally allowed Sigma and Tamron to make native Z lenses now. About the only complaint i have is that Tamron's 70-300 for Z, which is more than the F-mount version from Nikon, lacks in-lens stabilization, which if you're charging $700 for a lens, it should have in-lens stabilization (yes, the FF cameras have IBIS but this is only helpful up to a point). But regardless, I do like that Tamron is bringing some of the lenses offered for E mount, to the Z mount now. The more third parties that get on-board, the better the system will be because people will have options, and I think that's what Nikon really wants now that they've built-out their core set of lenses under the Nikon badge (such as your holy trinity of both fast and "slower" f/4 lenses). Although I would like to see Tamron perhaps do something like a 28-200 for Z or a 28-300 perhaps (that hopefully is sharper than the Z 24-200 at the longer end), or even a 24-240 to allow Nikon users to compete a bit more with CAnon and Sony travel zoom options (not that it's a competition in that particular segment with travel zooms).
A prismatic VR stage in the lens makes the light path longer, adds weight, cost, complexity, and can tecuce sharpness. As you said already, the target market for this lens is cameras that have IBIS, so i dont count not having in lens VR/VC as a problem.
Yeah, tough choice between Nikon 24-120 and this Tamron beast. Now, how would this Tamron behaves when videofilming ? How about focus breathing ? are there any ?
I recently got a Z9 and the 24-120mm f/4. Great combo for sure, but doesn't go near the f/2 range. This is very tempting. I wish there was a review that compares them side by side, mainly to see the color and bokeh differences. I think for a Zoom lens both will do fine in terms of sharpness.
I’d totally get this lens IF I didn’t already have the Nikon Z 24-120/4 S. I know this lens is a little different but there’s just too much overlap for me to justify. That said-I’m glad Tamron came out with such a cool lens!
I have this lens for Sony E mount, it is amazing, but 35mm is very limiting and I need to carry with me second body with a wider lens. 24-120 feels to be an amazing range, I would say it is more useful than 35-150. Though f2-f2.8 is noticably better than f4. There are always some tradeoffs.
I travel to Europe (from the US) several times a month and besides my Q2, I take my Sony a74 and 35-150. It's a perfect all-in-one travel lens. Since I just picked up a Nikon Z8 I'm definitely going to get this lens in the Z mount
I’ve had the Sony version since it came out (about 18 months ago), and it is absolutely fantastic! Started on a 7iv, but now on a 7RV. It gets the bulk of my shots. Love it!!interestingly, though, I just purchased the Tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 specifically for some upcoming overseas travel. I like to pack light, and it’s significantly smaller and lighter, which should serve me well for extensive walk-around shooting. As much as I love the 35-150, at 70 yrs old, it gets a bit heavy on the shoulder after a few hours. YMMV, of course 😊
Yeah right. Have a 150mm irix f2.8 macro lens. Upon upgrading to the R6 mark2, it wouldn't work with the camera anymore. Turns out to be an issue with all the new body releases from Canon, all MF lenses from 3rd party makers won't work. Now I have to sell my lens...
@shang-hsienyang1284 unfortunately I don't. Really a shame that a lens I really love and could have really shined thanks to the MF aids of mirrorless, now I have to sell.
Excellent review! Just one tiny observation: you talked about IBIS on the lens, and it did take me a few seconds to realize it's not the right word :) it's still worth to distinguish between in-body and lens stabilization when using a single word for it (you distinguished it yourself).
Great review as alwys, Fro! But nah, I'll stick with my Awesome Nikkor Z 24-120 f/4 S thank you. I'd bet the 24-120 is sharper at f/8, but without a pro comparison, who knows. I just know the 24-120 is a Fantastic lens on my Z7 and Z8...As a landscape shooter, I much prefer the 24 wide end to a 35 wide end. Very hard to beat. Thanks!

The reason for these two lenses over this is weight . I’m building live music light weight video kits . I’ll get the Nikon 14-24 S f/2.8 to replace the Tamron 15-30. I have the same lens for Canon. I use it on my R5 and it works better than when I used it on my 5DIV. I'd like to move up to the 2-2.8, but my photo piggy bank says no. :-)
How strong is the vignetting for this lens? Were these taken with an ND filter/edited that way or is that how the lens spits out the images? I own the G2 and feel like it has a vignetting problem at certain focal lengths and especially with ND filters on so im just wondering if that carries into this lens as well.
Jared thanks for this review. I want to purchase the Nikon F Mount Version for my Nikon D5500 and then the new Z Mount Version for my future Nikon Z5 and hopefully Nikon will release a Nikon Z5 Mark 2 soon.
I have a Nikon Z fc and am ready to upgrade from the kit lens. This Tamron is enticing from a pricing/performance standpoint, however, my Z fc does not have IBIS. As a "one lens to rule them all," how crucial is it that this lens also does not have IBIS/VR? I mostly shoot landscape and street. about 50/50 handheld vs. tripod.
If they build this thing for the RF mount, it's on my list. This is almost an all-purpose lens. It leaves a little gap on the wide end, but for day-to-day shooting, this would be a great all-in-one.
Yeah, I sold off almost all of my lenses when I had the Sony version on my Z9 and I didn’t miss anything. Shot concerts, weddings, portraits and sports all with this one lens.
I currently have a z 28-75 f2.8 and an old f mount 70-200 2.8. I would love to have this lens to replace both of them!! Such a great focal length and performance for a hobbyist photographer
I have the "F" mount version of this and totally love it. It's basically my walk around lens on my D850, and seldom comes off. Fantastic lens. Note: mine is the F2.8, not F2-2.8
Good video Jared. I wonder if you or anyone else will do a comparison to the 24-120 f4. That one is slower but wider. But having a 35mm at f2 isn’t too shabby either.
I have the same concern. I love the 24 120 f4. But.... for indoor photography I really lack of lights. My second interest is also the bokeh for portrait photography.
I just bought a mint used 35-150 on a zf and already own the 24-120 f4s the focus is faster on the 24-120 for sure. The tamron is more a portrait lens in my eyes. I just wish there was a firmware update already to nail the focus better on the tamron. So for me it depends what you shoot. Landscape go 24-120 every day
Tempting. I own the 35-150 on the F-mount and did love that lens for travel, but I do prefer the 24-120 range better. Now that I have the excellent 24-120 S lens, I think I’ll pass for now… see if it ever goes on sale.
Jared im in doubt...what should be my first lens the tamron 35-150 or nikon 24-70? I need to decide and is a struggle to understand what should be my first choice
I'm waiting for the UK Z8 stock to land and this is a timely release. I'll go body only rather than the kit and opt for this lens. If only Margate, England, looked as nice as Margate, NJ. 😥
I have a R10 so will need an EF adapter. I have the kit lens 18-150RF. I love it for the range, but need something that doesn’t break the bank for low light situations. I’m thinking of selling the 18-150 but want to get an expert opinion.
Is there a monopod/tripod ring attachment available? I shoot a lot of dance comps and would rather not have the extra weight pressure on the mount and still have the option to switch to vertical shots as well
In this video i finally see what zoom lens one advantage. When shooting very erratic moving object is the advantage of zoom. For travel i prefer bring 2 s prime and still weight less than this lens and better result. More so if the 1 is cupcake lens.
Fro thank you for not having your Rule of Thirds markers on while showing sample footage of the EVF, like most other channels, a real pet peeve for me! #neurotic
How would you compare this lens to the 35-150 F mount in image quality? I know the difference in aperture. But I own the F mount one, and it is super sharp IMO.
I shoot sports videos and pictures on a Nikon Z6. I recently bought the 70-180 2.8…now I’m having second thoughts. The extra focal is great for football but I am concerned about basketball season. I think if I get this I could sell my 85 and 28-75 as well. Any opinions from you or other commenters?
I would have preferred that Tamron had made this lens a constant f/2.8 aperture, allowing the lens to be smaller, lighter and, presumably, less expensive.
I noticed that my 28-75 2.8 at 75mm doesn't give enough isolation for my liking. 2.2 at 75 will help quite a bit so I'm happy to have this option despite the bulkiness.
Jared, can you double check the aperture vs. focal length stats. These appear to be different than the stats reported for the sony version for this lens. So, either one of the sets is incorrect OR this Z mount has managed to provide a wider aperture for a longer time period, which would be amazing. Sony lens reports - 35-38mm = f/2 39-58mm = f/2.2 59-79mm = f/2.5 80-150mm = f/2.8 Your video reports 35-39 2.0 40-74 2.1 75. 2.2 85-129 2.7 130-150 2.8 Please advise
Do the Nikon Z8 and Z9 offer the feature some Canon cameras do, called "same expo. for new aperture"? This feature will let the camera maintain the same exposure if you zoom in and out with a variable aperture zoom lens. So as the aperture changes, the camera adjusts the ISO, shutter speed or either, as per your choice in settings. It also works if you change lenses (e.g. to a slower Max. aperture lens) or fit an extender. The camera auto adjusts one the values to maintain the same exposure it had before the lens/adapter change.
I have seen many people were excited about this lens and ended up buying it. However, when they had used it for a while, they could not handle the weight of it anymore and sold it eventually .... (From Sony User)
Looks like a great lens to buy along with the Sony A7R V I plan to buy later this fall! I am no longer a working pro, so I no longer need 5 or 6 fast primes. I am moving from Canon DSLRs to Sony mirrorless because I am frustrated with their no third party lens policy.
If something like this came out before I purchased 6 other Z lenses, I may have considered spending the 2 grand. It would have come out much cheaper in the long run. Besides, my slower 24-200 works just fine outdoors with a wider range than the Tamron. Think I'll put that money toward a Z8.
Jared, this lens is very intriguing for a Z owner. I took the plunge on a Nikon 70-200 2.8/S lens, which is awesome and has the added advantage of VR/IS built-in. One of the things I enjoy is stage/event photography like yourself. Are you leaning more towards the Tamron lens than the 70-200 trinity? Any insight if Nikon's TCs will work with this lens?
@@nerforeos675 Agree the 70-180 provides a mid-budget alternative to the 70-200, that may cover many use-cases, and I'm glad Nikon and others are offering more Z options.
@@johnmajors1449I am also torn between getting these two lenses. I already have the 28-75 but need the 75-180. But it seems very compelling to basically get both of them in on lens. I already have the 14-30 f4 and a sigma150-600 with ftz
@@2222paulr I also have 28-75 and I'm selling it the moment I get my hands on 35-150. Previously I was thinking of adding 70-180 to my bag but 35-150 will replace both these lenses perfectly. Especially when owning already 14-30, I won't need much more for everyday shooting. Can't wait to have this new Tamron, such a versatile lens.
I wonder why there is such a huge price difference. The Nikon version costs x1,5 more than the Sony version in Sweden. And at that price it is a lot of money. Still I really want this lens ...
Hi Jared, at minute 05:28 you talk about aperture change throughout the zoom focal length. It's seems to me like it is different from Sony which is very odd, 2.1 and 2.7 are not common apertures and 2.5 (in third stop increments is missing). One other thing, I wonder how Nikon is allowing this lens to debut on its Z mount given the fact that it is an amazing unique lens and priced relatively okay, and so far the Nikon strategy is to allow third party mainly tamron at this stage that are mid-priced mid-level same as Canon EF more or less With Sigma and Tamron. What are the odds that this lens will make its way to canon RF before 2033...? (and I am a Canon shooter haha)
I was going to buy the 70-180 f2.8 and this lens comes out. Now I don't know which one to choose, considering that I already have a 24-70, any recommendations?
Want to know how it works in infrared... with my full spectrum Z5, the 24-70 F4 is fine, but the 24-120 and the 24-200 both hotspot (apparently the 70-200 F2.8 does too) and I struggle to justify having a lens that only works on 1 camera (my Z7). This could be my superzoom answer! Please... please....! Also means I'd better send the 24-120 back before the Amazon return period ends....

Landscape go 24-120 every day
Wow 2 to 2.8 is amazing! I would love to test this lens!
The Sony version is amazing, and I'll be recommending it to my Nikon friends
CANON needs to open up the RF mount because this is a MUST HAVE for Pro-sumers everywhere...
The Sony one is my favorite one-all lens. Totally agree with this review.
Good Cam & Lens Demo.
Seems like a great lens for Basketball/Volleyball, or other sports in a gym.
If you only had to get one lens would you get this one or 24-70 f/2.8 s?
in the 9 min mark i think it is the nikon focus since mine does that all the time
Dude i ordered my shirts from you 3 weeks ago. Where are they?
Appears to be a fantastic lens for a two camera wedding photographer. This lens on one camera and a 70-200 2.8 on the other. Bam-Bam!!
Too much overlap, better pait it wit a 17-35 ;)
I wish they'd do the Tamron 20-40mm I have on my D750, it's so useful indoors
#neurotic
Thoughts on this as a sports lens for maybe basketball from under the basket?
Your opinion of older cameras in 2023? Specifically D750 D810 both used for under 1K. Thanks!
How would you compare this lens to the 35-150 F mount in image quality? I know the difference in aperture. But I own the F mount one, and it is super sharp IMO.
def the one with the cut off ear...I agree
I shoot sports videos and pictures on a Nikon Z6. I recently bought the 70-180 2.8…now I’m having second thoughts. The extra focal is great for football but I am concerned about basketball season. I think if I get this I could sell my 85 and 28-75 as well. Any opinions from you or other commenters?
Focus isn't good enough for sports or that has been my experience so far until they produce a firmware update
Jared should have been. Rapper dawg. Such natural talent
Sony lens reports - 35-38mm = f/2
39-58mm = f/2.2
59-79mm = f/2.5
80-150mm = f/2.8
Your video reports
35-39 2.0
40-74 2.1
75. 2.2
85-129 2.7
130-150 2.8
Please advise
The specs are great, but if it is not as sharp as the Nikon z 2.8’s I’m not interested. I’ll wait and see what Ricci says
If anything put on the internet leads with a question, the answer is no
Do the Nikon Z8 and Z9 offer the feature some Canon cameras do, called "same expo. for new aperture"? This feature will let the camera maintain the same exposure if you zoom in and out with a variable aperture zoom lens. So as the aperture changes, the camera adjusts the ISO, shutter speed or either, as per your choice in settings.
It also works if you change lenses (e.g. to a slower Max. aperture lens) or fit an extender. The camera auto adjusts one the values to maintain the same exposure it had before the lens/adapter change.
yes!
I have seen many people were excited about this lens and ended up buying it. However, when they had used it for a while, they could not handle the weight of it anymore and sold it eventually .... (From Sony User)
For non professionals (hobbyist) this lens along with z6 iii and z 14-30mm f/4 would be the best package.
Incredible lens. Incredible pictures.
The price is a bit high; but nikon 1.8 primes should do the job
Looks like a great lens to buy along with the Sony A7R V I plan to buy later this fall! I am no longer a working pro, so I no longer need 5 or 6 fast primes. I am moving from Canon DSLRs to Sony mirrorless because I am frustrated with their no third party lens policy.
If something like this came out before I purchased 6 other Z lenses, I may have considered spending the 2 grand. It would have come out much cheaper in the long run. Besides, my slower 24-200 works just fine outdoors with a wider range than the Tamron. Think I'll put that money toward a Z8.
Z24-200 in my thoughts is a better lens for travel. I use mine every day when travelling😀
You should totally consider trading that for the 24-120 f4
Can we expect any drone reviews in the future?
Jared, this lens is very intriguing for a Z owner. I took the plunge on a Nikon 70-200 2.8/S lens, which is awesome and has the added advantage of VR/IS built-in. One of the things I enjoy is stage/event photography like yourself. Are you leaning more towards the Tamron lens than the 70-200 trinity? Any insight if Nikon's TCs will work with this lens?
no, I would not lean towards the tamron over a true 70-200
Nikon has that sweet 70-180 f/2.8 that Tamron came out with first. For lower weight and cost, I'd get that over the 70-200.
I have Nikon S line 20, 35, 50 and 85, you guys think would be better to have the Tamron?
Please Canon let Tarmon make this!
Is it good to carry both lens 1635mm gm f2.8 and tamaron 28200mm f2.8 ?
Does the usb port have a cover to stop things going in like rain? :-0 Looks a great lens though
I don't own a Tamron yet for my Sony but im considering it
Hi :) thanks for the great review!
Do you know how it works for wildlife? or if you can fit a teleconverter with it?
You would never put a converter on a wide angle to 150 zoom.
I wonder why there is such a huge price difference. The Nikon version costs x1,5 more than the Sony version in Sweden. And at that price it is a lot of money. Still I really want this lens ...
When will this puppy be availble in the RF mount Alliaance... ance ance...?
Focus looks pretty great coming from an Olympus shooter lol.
Thanks for your review! Very helpful!
FFS Need this for RF!!!
I was going to buy the 70-180 f2.8 and this lens comes out. Now I don't know which one to choose, considering that I already have a 24-70, any recommendations?
I'd get the 70-180. You already have the 24-70 covered, which includes 35-70; why duplicate that focal range in the 35-150?
Want to know how it works in infrared... with my full spectrum Z5, the 24-70 F4 is fine, but the 24-120 and the 24-200 both hotspot (apparently the 70-200 F2.8 does too) and I struggle to justify having a lens that only works on 1 camera (my Z7). This could be my superzoom answer! Please... please....! Also means I'd better send the 24-120 back before the Amazon return period ends....
It certainly is awesome to travel with on the Sony
What do I do with all my DSLR high end equipment now? 😞
Raw tight with no slippage...
lens hood is so small, wonder why its so much smaller than the hood on my first gen 24-70f2.8 F mount. looks like it wont help that much
