    That's a huge tip for Nikon Z folks (other systems too?) - disabling the manual focus override while in autofocus. Either disable the ring, or turn off the feature in AF Custom Settings. Just use the switch on the lens instead, or the AF Mode setting. Especially for the Z lenses with larger focus rings (all the 1.8 S lenses for example).

    This with the 17-28 or the 14-30, maybe a 40 f/2 for low light, would be a nice travel kit.

    I am a pro photographer and this lens is very much for me too, cause I need it for my hiking and biking trips, when carrying or mounting a large tele lens is not an option. Yeah, I was bit disappointed when I saw that it is f/8 (and already at 200mm), cause I was hoping it will be f/6.3 lens, but for such a range in such a small body it was bit unrealistic to expect f/6.3. All in all it seams like a good lens and it probably replaces 24-200mm f/4 as the first lens I'll buy when I finally switch to Z 🤷‍♂

      @@moravskyvrabec yeah, I also had F mount 28-300 for such purposes but unfortunately on one trip I dropped it and it broke beyond repair. I missed it so much since then cause my main such lens since then was 24-120, which doesn't have enough reach

I reached my goal to become a paid photojournalist and still come back here because only a fool thinks he knows it all. I popped in for this lens review and agree with Jared’s spot-on advice to parents - you’re not allowed to coach, to yell at the officials, or talk to the players. I have dual Nikon Z9's and a Z6ii that will all go with me (I like having backups), and I own literally the full line up of Z lenses, but I love the idea of the versatility of this guy to be my "primary" lens. Of course I'm thinking about my 180-600mm, the 24-70, 70-200, 14-30, and a third party 10mm for ultimate landscapes, but I have a funny feeling this may be the go-to lens for my trip.

      I received my order within a week of placing it through NPS, and I’m quite impressed with the lens. The only minor inconvenience is that I had to purchase a larger backpack to accommodate its size. LOL 😂 Although, maybe not an inconvenience because it was an excuse to buy another bag (Shimoda for the win). :)
      Regarding performance, I’ve noticed that using a 2X teleconverter significantly reduces image quality with non-S-Line lenses, more so than when used with my S-Line lenses. Consequently, I’ve found that while S-Line lenses work well with teleconverters, it’s preferable to crop images in post-production for non-S-Line lenses like this 180-600. Initially, I was excited about using my 2X teleconverter in DX mode, which theoretically extends the reach to 1800mm. However, my tests consistently show that shooting at 600mm and cropping later yields sharper results.

    I love my photography, and definitely spend too much money on what is a chosen hobby (I don't want to go into photography professionally for many reasons).
    The fact that I want a superzoom, doesn't mean I don't care about my photography. It means that my progressive disability has made swapping out lenses out and about harder... so I do have my full frame tamron duality, and even my sigma 18-50mm 2.8, but if I'm able to, I'm gonna go out with the superzoom as a lens for the day, and I'll get a lot photos I might have struggled with if I had to swap between various lenses (including my chonky boi, 100-400mm sigma)... I also still like prime lenses, but weight/size are serious calculations in what I buy...
    I have a friend who can only do photography with a phone (although currently experimenting with an RX100), and they are very very good...
    Just because people cannot (if we wanted to), make the same choices as you, does not mean we do not care about our photography.

      100% agree although external zooms I always worry about a bit in the wet so would definitely have a cover on. Would have loved to take this in the zodiak in Svalbard or Antarctica. The other place would be dusty hiking like in Nepal where you really want something light but versatile because you don't really want to be changing lenses all the time with the dust.

    A few years ago, I bought the 18-400 zoom from Tamron. The focus breathing was horrid, barely reaching 300 mm on our backyard bird feeders, at a distance of about 20 feet. While I'm sure it would have reached 400 mm at infinity, I already had a 300 mm lens for closer distances. So I traded it in for the Tamron 100-400, which had virtually no focus breathing at the same distance. Given the variability, I really don't understand why reviewers (and manufacturers) don't provide specs for focus breathing, which is often substantial for these long telephotos. Even a qualitative assessment would be helpful e.g. the viewfinder view as the focus distance decreases from infinity, which shows shrinkage with focus breathing.

    • @leemarkowitz4709
      @leemarkowitz4709 8 дней назад

      Yes, most people don’t realize how much focal length breathing there is with the DSLR superzoom lenses. I’m very curious from people who have used this lens if there is focal length breathing. Can anyone here answer?
      The only very sharp superzoom option with minimal focal length breathing that I’ve used is the Sony RX10 IV.
