Tamron was able to pull off a monster 35-150 f/2-2.8...I'm not surprised that 28-400 f/4-8 is actually doable at that size and price package with modern manufacturing and engineering methods. @@RedlinerSeven Because neither of the Z5, -Zf- , Z6 II or Z7 II have AI subject detection (nor does the Z50). Which isn't a full frame problem though, it's a Nikon problem. And part of the reason why they need to wake up and release new bodies.
EDIT: The Zf does have it.
Because APS-C tends to be smaller and lighter (both bodies and lenses). That gap is definitely shrinking though.
Because some people care about reach at full zoom more than about high ISO quality. And the 1.5x crop factor gives them that reach. Yes, high-res full frame can do it too, but that's a lot more expensive.
Because full frame did not have any credible megazooms until today.

    • @tomasmarny3143
      @tomasmarny3143 7 месяцев назад +1

@@RedlinerSevenYes it is. And in same way as D500 was a small D5 with all fearures, high speed and AF advantages. I have had D500 for wildlife photography so the 200-500 Nikkor is 300-750 mm thanks to crop factor 1,5. That's why is a good idea to introduce Z90 as a apc-c flagship (small Z9) with 30 Mpix sensor to make long lenses even longer. But I don't believe that Nikon will do it so that's why i bought Z8 45 Mpix and that's a good replacement of my D500 for wildlife with very similar details at 500 mm because Z8 has in DX mode also ca 20 Mpix. Z5 is a entry level FX and its aps-c equivalent id already existing Z50 and they aren't the bodies whih are wildlife photographers looking for.

There are plenty of even more aggressive superzooms in the professional video world. The catch is that those lenses cost tens of thousands of dollars, have _extremely_ complex optical formulas, and are constructed to exacting tolerances that are beyond what is possible in a cost-constrained consumer lens.
Nikon apparently feels that with modern simulation and manufacturing they're able do an adequate job. We'll see if they're right once these are out in volume (cherry-picked preproduction units as here don't count).

The one I use more often since I got it is the 70-180, but the other one is often my choice if I need a lighter kit. The advantages of the 70-180 si that I can put my TC1.4 on it. ... So I have plans to take that one on my vacation this summer. But if I had this lens!? I wouldn't min changeling 24 to 28 at F4 to be able to reach 400 at F8 instead of only 200 at F6.3 ... This is a perfect Safari lens for any one going on Safari to Africa. (Not for the professional photographers, but for tourists) If you have this lens on your cameras and bring a 28 F2.8 and 40 F2.0 as your low light lenses. You have it almost covered. But I would never recommend any one going on a once in a lifetime trip to Africa with only one camera! If I had this lens, I would still bring my 400mm F4.5 + TC1.4 and my two Z6II cameras. And my 20mm F1.8. But one of my cameras would have this on!

Sounds reasonably good, but I'm still waiting for a proper test. I mostly go with the 24-120 S and the Sigma 150-500 (both are superb, IMO), but if the IQ is good enough, I just might switch... third of the weight compared to that combo is something to be considered. I use the Sigma at f/8 anyways, so the loss of light is not necessarily a huge issue... it all comes down to price for me at this point. €1500 or thereabouts, and I might be tempted. €2000 or above, I wouldn't bother with it.

I'll be interested to see a later test when you look at sharpness.
This seems like a Tamron lens; they just partnered up with Nikon and now this one has the relatively useless locking switch while omitting the very useful stabilizer and AF/MF switches, just like the 28-200mm.
People shoot different things, but this trend toward zooms starting at 28mm is sad; I was on a trip recently with the 28-200mm and it was shocking how often the 28mm was just not quite wide enough and I was often switching lenses. Maybe that's the price to pay for a smaller size (maybe there's some sort of physics law involved where 24mm is much harder to engineer than 28mm) I'm not sure.
I'm appreciating the recent superzoom releases; I'm always trying to lighten my kit and lately it seemed like the companies were only focusing on those who want giant lenses and a bag full of primes (due to thinking that everyone else must have switched to a smartphone and they could maintain profit margins with the remaining enthusiasts who don't care about weight).

This is a great lens for someone who can't afford to have multiple lenses for multiple jobs. There are compromises, yes. But the zoom versatility, image quality and price make this a very compelling lens for full frame.

Should I sell my Z 24-200mm? I do sports event video with my Z 5 and also nature photography. For both uses 28-400mm range would be useful.

I always prefer to divide the focal lengths (24-120, 100-400). But I've been in some circumstances where changing lenses was impractical. for those who stay in places with a lot of wind and dust, it is a great option.

This lens looks great for sports and wildlife shooters when the light outside is good enough, or when cranking up ISO. I will stick with the Z 24-200mm for now which I have my eye on for my Z5. I don't do much wildlife or sports. And 200mm is still good for some sports in close range. I also bought the FX 28-300mm previously for my D780, which I like a lot and have used it at ballet recitals and weddings. Good work and praise to Nikon though, for making a Z 28-400mm, and so light for wildlife/sports shooters!

I’ve got my Tamron 18-400mm on my D5600. A totally cool kit if ever there was one. FF equiv of 27-600 is just the “ant’s pants” travel camera of all time.

It just goes to show that there is a market for super zooms. I also feel that full frame is the new APSc as Nikon don't seem to be developing anything major specifically for their APSc range. I would expect them to release a true budget ff camera soon

I love my Tamron 18-400 ... but this Nikkor is a full frame lens, so (on my Z50) it's actually 42-600mm. The difference in snappiness between my Tamron and my Z mount lenses is palpable and I'm drooling over this new offering.

The positives imho: good on Nikon to try something different it was a lens no one saw coming. I believe landscape photographer will love this. Does it beat the 24-120f4 ? I believe not, BUT given how popular that 100-400 was for landscape photographers I see them forgoing the 17-28 and the 100-400 and sticking with this and maybe the wider 14-30f4 and boom you have the perfect landscape setup! Me personally I can’t see this for any other target range of photographers

While I'm asking. Why wasn't it tested using the 2x digital zoom on the Z8? Come on you let Jordan out for the video on mics . Let him out of the dungeon a bit more. If you're worried about the lens breaking put a protective filter on it
