Add small and cheap 40mm f2 and you got something compact and for low light as well. Or even 20mm F2.8 from viltrox if you are on budget and don't want to add money for Nikon 20mm f1.8 (and since getting 20mm I barely use my 16-35mm. it's that good). Very happy with 40mm as daily lens as well.

I have the Tamron 18-400 DX lens (so 27-600mmFF equiv) attached to my D5600. This is my “immediate” go to lens. Now this new Nikon lens at 28-400 on FULL FRAME should be an absolute winner for every photographer. Just think, on a Z7,8,9 cropped down, in half, in post and you’ve got something of an 800mm shot with reasonable levels of megapixels. What a friggin’ winner!! Coupled with better image stabilisation having IBIS instead of VR … WOW!! Of course, if you want to do a strict portrait shot you can always rip out the “Plena” from your bag or if you are poor like me you can race for the F mount 85mm F1.8 G. But seriously, this new lens should be on most photographers mind now that the 28-400mm has been produced by Nikon and revealed to the World by Matt. Cheers

What a surprise! I still use a 28-300 3.5-5.6 F Mount with the FTZ adaptor on my Nikon Z6II, and find it to be my favorite lens for not just range, but for color and overall punch. It's fine with low light, too. I know this runs against modern reviews of that lens which have just about pronounced it obsolete, but I keep using it over my 24-70 4.0 S and the 35 and 50 S 1.8s. So I am very much looking forward to seeing more of this lens! I doubt I would spend $1,299 to get another 100mm over what I use now, but consumeritis might get me eventually because it is lighter weight and no FTZ adaptor would be needed. Staying tuned, thanks for the review!

I went from a Zfc last year that I took to Brazil with an old 24-200VR. I was very pleased with the results, but I wanted IBIS, subject recognition and some other new options etc. This new Zf is great for travel and I’m shooting an 28-300 Fmt plus a 14-30 Z. The 28-300 is pretty heavy and I have the 28-400 on order. I will also carry a 17-35 f4. Together, they’ll reduce the size, weight and should make a great travel kit. I have a Z8 & Z9 for serious work with Z & S lenses, but I don’t want to bang them around anymore hiking, fishing, hunting, camping and back-packing with them.

Wow, Nikon really makes inroads to restore its market share. I also use a Canon and for my lightweight R8 I got the 24-240, what is a similar concept 'one-feets-all', but that lens is extremely bulky and makes the combo with R8 very front heavy. This 28-400 Nikkor seems to be ingenious and unique indeed.

Great review; lots of useful information!
Nikon better order some lumber, because at the rate this thing is going to fly off the shelf, they better have big shelves. This will be a supremely useful lens for many hobbyists, travelers, hikers, and sports-dads-and-moms. My one lens walkaround needs are met by the fantastic 24-120 and my long end is covered by the 180-600 so I have very little use for a 28-400 but it is great that Nikon is giving us so many options.

This lens was my wet dream since the rumors started, cause I need it for my hiking and biking trips, when my 150-600mm is simply not an option because of its size and weight. Many times I don't use it even if it is the backpack, cause it is annoying and time consuming to stop, take it out of the backpack, change it, take a shot and put it back into the backpack. I used to have 28-300mm but sadly dropped it once and it broke beyond the repair. I miss it very much cause now my only walk around lens is 24-120mm and 120 is way to short for many situations. I was bit worried and disappointed when I saw that this new Z 28-400 really is f/8, cause I was hoping for f/6.3, but yeah, for such a range in such a small body it was bit unrealistic to expect f/6.3. But I think my concerns about F/8 have been largely removed by your excellent review. 24-200 f/4 was my previous favorite for the first Z lens, but 400mm is just irresistible, so this will probably be the first lens that I'll buy when I finally find enough money to switch to Z.

As a Motorsport Photographer this is definitely an attractive option for trackside shooting. 100% something I'd consider adding to my kit to replace my 200-500 f/5.6 and still be able to catch close action

Yes of course brilliant for motorsport, what body would you attach it with?

@@MattIrwinPhotographyCurrently my main body is a Z7, I've got the 24-70 and 70-200 S lenses, so this would be super nice to round out the kit with something that won't require a lot of lens swapping

If I get to hold onto it a little long, or get another copy soon, I will do both those things, I can tell you it is at f/8 at 200mm

Thanks for the video Matt. Great images (as always!). I own the 24-200 and saying that this lens is similar in size is an overstatement. The 24-200 is not as large and long, not to mention its extension, and weights 15% less or so, but yes, it maxs out at 200mm. As a travel lens I guess the new 28-400 should be amazing, but I'm still not convinced with the f/8, particularly when it starts at 200mm. Yes we do have IBIS coupled with the lens' internal VR, and ultimately it's just a stop higher than 6.3, but even that is already too much of a push. Remembering my less-than-ideal F mount 28-300 wide open at f/5.6 on the 300mm range, which somehow I wish it could translate in terms of aperture performance to the Z mount. I guess f/8 starting at 200mm makes it a no-go for me. But I can see the value proposition for traveling and if bright sunny days were exclusively my thing this would be a no-brainer.

      Hi Nelson, thanks very much.
      As for size,
0.8cm difference in the girth, 2.75cm difference in height
When fitting into my world / bags / use cases, makes them pretty similar, both lenses will find the same spot in my bag. Not like a 70-200, 100-400, Plena, 85nn 1.2 etc, which will all require a different spot :)
