Ive got the 24-120 f4.....but I tell you what, I'm quite tempted. That reach in that size body. Thanks for yet another great video Matt. Always impeccable quality!
The perfect lens for my street sessions tours with my clients and also wedding proposals, because of the versatility and weight, with the added bonus of being the best choice for traveling
Always used to take the F Mount 28-300mm on personal travel / family holidays etc. when I went Z Mount I got the 24-200mm to fill that role, but it doesn’t quite cut it for me. So, yes, this will definitely be joining my kit!
This is an Excellent Video, I currently own the Nikon ZF (Sunset Orange), Z8, and Z9. I pre-Ordered this Lens on March 26th from the NikonUSA Website and I'm hoping it will arrive before July, I'm planning on taking the ZF and 28-400mm Lens with me on Vacation to Jamaica in July, prior to the announcement of the New Lens, I was debating over the Nikon 24-120 or the 24-200 Lens. The 28-400 I feel will hit the sweet spot, as I did not want to carry my larger and much heavier Telephoto Len's. Seeing the Lens mounted on the ZF is exactly what I was hoping for, thanks for sharing the information.
Love this video. I own the Z8 and the Zfc and think the new 28-400 lens will fit both very nicely. We go on holidays may 4 to Austria, that would mean I only need to take one lens with me to take landscape and wildlife photo's ;-)
Received mine yesterday. Feels great on my Z8. I think it is a great replacement for my F-mount 28-300mm travel lens. Even though it is f/4-8, I’m excited to take it out & about. A great all-round lens!
Yup! Mine is currently out for delivery! For me, this is the perfect catch all travel lens. I've been running the f-mount 28-300, and I'm pumped about having a native replacement. No more FTZ, and this lens is so much lighter!
Great comparison to the Z28-400 between on Nikon cameras. As I heard a lot of Nikon users said that, in term of the manual focus performance with manual lenses, Zf has better usage experience than Z8. Will you consider to make an other deep comparison on manual focus with manual lense to Z8 and Zf?
Thinking I will get this for my Zf, good lens when out for a day and saves carrying heaps of spare lenses. Would be keen to try it for bird photography on the Zf. Certainly lighter than my 200-500 & ftz. Might work on a Z50 too, so the balance felt ok?
Hi Matt. I am intrigued by this lens. I'm hoping that someone does a comparison with the Nikon Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 lens. The obvious difference would be the extra reach of the new lens, and that you're giving up around 12% field of view at the wide end. But, I'm more curious about the image quality. I have the Nikon Z 24-200mm and the Nikon Z 24-120mm f4. I have no thoughts about giving up my beloved 24-120mm f4, but a do-all lens like the new 28-400mm might make lots of sense!
Same boat! I got the 24-200 first but haven’t used it since getting the 24-120. I didn’t miss the extra 80mm. But the 24-400 - that could make me leave my 24-120 behind when travelling (along with some primes too).
Do you think you could do a comparison between the 24-200mm and the 28-400mm? I was thinking to get the former but now I am tempted to get the latter. I still can’t make up my mind and would like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for uploading Matt, good to see what it looks like on the various Z mount cameras. As it's a loan lens from Nikon, I presume, they don't allow real image testing or comparisons. However, that's really what many are interested in. Personally I'm interested in the sharpness and resolution across the frame from 200-400 as a lightweight lens for the mountains. I don't mind the f8 for that but it needs to be better at the long end than the 24-200 is at it's long end. You alluded to it being a bit better in your last video, would love to see some results and comparisons. 😊
Cheers, I actually shot this video a couple of weeks ago, and the lens is long gone. If I ever purchase it, or can get it back, I will certainly conduct that test :)
@@MattIrwinPhotography That would be excellent Matt, thanks. The lens is coming out this week but it's difficult to get ahold of one to try but not being my usual type of lens, I don't want to just take a punt on it. 🙂
I think this lens is a perfect fit for a ZF or Z6 series camera. I would love to have either camera and be able to pair the camera with this lens, as I said in your previous 28-400mm video, such a great all-rounder. You made me LOL with the wood grip joke, very low-key! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thinking about eventually getting a combo of the 17-28 f2.8 and 28-400 f4-8 to replace the 16-50 and 50-250 kit lenses that came with my Z50, mainly for traveling or to carry hiking. It would cover a huge focal range with just two lenses, while also hopefully having a slight step up in image quality from the significantly cheaper lenses. That or the other option is I just go with the DX 18-140 and invest more into full frame kit for the Z6 III I’ll hopefully be getting soon
Amazing range in such a small package! My $ this year is going to the 180-600, obviously a different use case. I appreciate the wide variety of native Z glass, something for everyone!
Great video Matt, very interesting. I would like to know how sharp this lens is on a 45mp sensor. When I upgraded to z7ii from Z6, I noticed that my z 24-200, Tamron z70-300 and 14-30 f4 lacked the sharpness and fine detail of my S line lenses, so I sold them.
Hello Matt, just one thing you can do macro with this lens, as you could buy some extention rings for the Z system. (I have from Grays of Westminster) and I have even used them on the 24-200mm Z mount lens. But it is always good to see you.
Note: NO teleconverters work with this lens. The rear elements come too close to the mount to allow converters to poke up into the lens as they do with the other teles.
What Nikon reported problems with the Nikon Zf on AF-C at a single point jerks the image in the viewfinder at times up to 1/250s. Very severe when photographing weddings. Z8 and Z9 show similar problems.
Another good video Matt. It would be great if you could do an objective comparison between the 24-200 and the 28-400 on the Z8 (comparison of still image quality on the computer screen). I have the 20, 14-30, 24-70 and 105 for my z7ii but my main lens for bushwalking is the 24-200. It's image quality for a non S lens is remarkable and I believe it exceeds that of the Zeiss F mount lenses I used to use on my D810. I am seriously considering moving to the 28-400 but would like to make sure I wouldn't be stepping backwards in image quality from the 24-200.
Yes fair enough, I own the 24-200 and due to that I have no plans to buy the 28-400, so any comparison from me will be reliant on borrowing the lens again, I will see how I go :)
Hey Matt thanks for the video. I am hoping to take this lens on a family holiday to Singapore later this year. It will save a lot of weight and give me greater flexibilty over the heavier S glass I would normally take. looking forward to your review to come.
People love to bash superzooms, and of course they're always a compromise optically, but from everything I've seen, this lens looks about perfect for a walk around lens or holiday trips. It's even in the range that it would be decent for taking photos of kid's sports (outdoors of course, in good light).
Depends on the focal length of your lens but of course, also the category of wildlife - small birds to elephants, and everything in between. More mp's are great, but IMO it's about the focal length first.
A nice video thanks! I wonder if the red clothing is telling us something...maybe you know the new bodies will have some Red tech in them, hence the perceived delay? This lens will be perfect for scrambling around Skye. Nothing personal, but you have to be under 30 to wear the hat backwards methinks...
Looks like a nice lens but would not buy. I am not an expert like you but f8 seems a little slow without having to go crazy on ISO. (Especially for sports.)
Ah, so many things I could say - 'Are you seriously telling somebody you don't know what to wear ... I mean my mother does that, but nobody else ...' 'Why do you care ...' 'What hat do you wear ..., can we spend some time critiquing your look?' 'I have made over 600 vids, and trust me you run out of looks ...' 'Mate ((and no we are not mates) it's Australian for something I will let you work out for yourself) I don't care, but what I do care about is you think you should say something, because what - world peace? and finally ... 'I have spent over 20 hours putting this piece together, for your and others enjoyment, which is about a lens, which you must have some degree of interest in, big or small, and this is seriously all you have to say ... I am really not that important to you.
Thanks Matt for the amount of time and care you put into this and all of your videos. I didn't even notice what you are wearing. For me it makes no difference to your brilliant content.
I like this lens and I feel like it would easily work on my ZF in Sunset Orange....but wait a minute, I don't have a Sunset Orange just a boring black ZF. Anybody want to trade, orange for black?
I came for the ZF hope to get this setup in the next couple of weeks I am super excited about it!
I already ordered this beautiful NIKKOR Z 28-400mm. Am excited to put my hands on it.
Ive got the 24-120 f4.....but I tell you what, I'm quite tempted. That reach in that size body. Thanks for yet another great video Matt. Always impeccable quality!
Same I have the 24-120, but also tempted by this one.
me too. love the 24-120 but that reach! will it be "good enough"??
Got the 24-120 too.
I actually would have liked a 20-120 more then 28-400
For me it's not wide enough and f8 isn't that nice for me
The perfect lens for my street sessions tours with my clients and also wedding proposals, because of the versatility and weight, with the added bonus of being the best choice for traveling
It’s a pretty compelling lens for the bag as a safety net. A good lens that backs up ever other focus length… just like having a second body. Nice. 👍🏻
Ordered it Matt! On a Zf, with a 14-30, it should be the perfect travel kit! Thanks Matt!!
Great addition to the selection of glass! Life is about choices!!
Like it on the Zf. Has the makings of a good travel lens!
Always used to take the F Mount 28-300mm on personal travel / family holidays etc. when I went Z Mount I got the 24-200mm to fill that role, but it doesn’t quite cut it for me. So, yes, this will definitely be joining my kit!
I will get my hands on this lens in a couple of days. Very exciting! I will most likely use it mostly for video. Cool video Mat! 😊
If just for video, why not panasonic hc-x1500 camcorder, it has 25-600mm reach?
Yes!! Who would not want this lens if already invested in the Nikon system.

I ordered this lens. Can't wait till it ships. 1st lens I bought for my new ZF.
How's the ergonomic and do you carry them for everyday use or just use your phone?
Very interesting lens. Looking for some comparisons with the old F mount 28-300mm before making any purchasing decisions.

I absolutely Love how you say the Name Correctly ...Zed 9.
Hello! Looking forward to my trip to Australia in November, specifically Melbourne and Sydney. This is the lens I am taking with me on my Z8.

I like the way how you care about aestetichs which is a very important factor! This lens is a beast I'm seriously thinking to swap my 24-200 to it.
Thanks for the preview of how this exciting new lens will look on my Nikon bodies.
Nice video
Keep it up
Maybe sometime show some results or sample to this from Z50 camera.
I have a Z50
Thanks

@@exert2020 I did not say teleconverters as they as you rightly said do not work with this lens. I DID say EXTENSION TUBES that do work.
@@johnhjic2 I know, didn't say you were wrong, just thought useful information for people as kinda related to what you were talking about. No issues.
Leaning towards getting it. I like the versatility!
Nice! Now let's move on to 1.8/16mm, 18mm T/S, 1.2/35mm, 3.5-6.3/24-300mm :D
What Nikon reported problems with the Nikon Zf on AF-C at a single point jerks the image in the viewfinder at times up to 1/250s. Very severe when photographing weddings. Z8 and Z9 show similar problems.
Really considering this for my travel lens so i only have to bring one with me
Is it still worth it getting a 2nd hand z6 with 51k actuations? Planning to buy a 2nd hand so I can save up for this lens.
Great video as always, but, drop the reverse baseball cap please 🤦♂️
LOL too funny, I make almost 700 vids (over 15,000 minutes of content), and maybe have done this 5 times
I turn my cap around when shooting, because the bill get in the way, especially when I turn the camera in portrait orientation.
I wonder how many people detected your wry smile when mentioning the optional add on grip for Zf? Specially the grip with wood. Sigmund would enjoy.😅

For travel this is the lens I need + 14-30 on my Zf, and Z50.
this will make a perfect travel lens. A little slow at the tele end for my taste but it is what it is, just shoot outside in good light I guess.
Yeah, IBIS and VR help, but if the subject is moving fast ISO is needed
Is the Nikon Zf 24MP Sensor any good for Wildlife Photography or should I get a higher MP sensor? Thanks

Fantastic walkabout lens. I wonder if a 2.8-5.6 version is on the drawing board. Nikon magicians should be able to make it happen, right?
We can only hope and dream !!! :)
Ordered mine on Best Buy last week. Now it is showing sold out and no update on shipping.
Is there a battery grip in the works for the ZF ??
Man, I would love a grip to match the retro body - inspired by the F3's, or FM2's motor drive.
Not that I am aware of, great idea though
Where is Z6 IIi and Z7 III ?
Matt must know something
Of course he does 😅
Zed🙏 thank you
42-600 on crop is nice, just need a WR crop body with dual slots and Nikon will have something to rival Fuji/Canon crop offerings.
