"Society strongly values certain artistic talent so much that they will overlook fairly pronounced characterological flaws in order to create a false hero." - best line and a fantastic analysis.
It is only about money with them. It is sad really. They don't care about people in Hollywood at all.

X is a perfect example of being a product of your environment, towards the end he knew how messed up he was but never got the chance to turn it around, very sad imo.
This is a great example of why young kids need to learn & understand that consequences are real. Some actions have immediate consequences. Others are realized hours, day, years or decades later.
@@meesc3556 he has no immediate family to turn to when things go bad
he turned things around by trying to spread nothing but positivity to helping others
@@meesc3556 there was no way he could know what he was doing was bad as said his mother neglected him and his father went to jail and was deported there's no way you can day to someone to do better when no one tried with him to make him better his friends and fans rewarded him for his exploits that may have been the narcissist part but that's not his fault that's him reacting to his environment
@@meesc3556 when u were a young kid u probably dont know shit too and needed to learn whatever u just said so idk why u sound so entitled when u say that. Its almost like u have this condescending view upon young kids or people who doesnt have a perfect family, or a great guidance. Let me tell u this, tough time make strong man, if X never been thru what he had been thru, he would never be successful like he is today. he would work a 9-5 job like everybody else. So suck it up LOL.
I was introduced to x and his music through my kids. His music is really good. There is doubt he was a rare talent and his message resonated because it is genuine and represents the experiences of a significant number of youth. It is rare to find an artist of any kind that is stable and plays well with others. I love Dr G, but I think what he is missing here is that X was really starting to talk about turning his life around and had taken some observable steps. He was not killed as a result of any drug or gang activity and in that particular situation had done nothing more than shop for a motorcycle with cash and was jumped by 4 people trying to steal money that he had earned through his
Music. We really don’t know what kind of person or role model he would have become as he does too young. We just know he was a person who was exposed to crime and violence his whole life as as Dr G pointed out, he had to attempt to use violence to protect his mother at 6 years old. He did a lot of
Bad stuff, but genuinely seemed to be trying towards the end. I wish he could have lived long enough to get past 27, straighten his life out, proceed to make terrible music, and be an actual role model.
R.I.P XXXTENTACION
“It’s almost like his music career interfered with his life of crime.” That is amusing, but also rings so true. Also, it was a very interesting observation that the type of music he sang had to come from a place of experience, I never thought of that.
I both agree and disagree with a lot of the "it had to come from experience" characterization. A lot of his style of rap is really based on expressing, dealing with depression, trauma, paranoia, persecution, competition etc. and the gangsta life is and others' his way of experiencing and depicting that kind of emotional material. but other kinds of rap, like other kinds of expression, have their ways of dealing with the same stuff without the exact same circumstances being involved
@@user-zr9hu3tf1y
Its interesting how relatively quick he rose up and all. Considering his audience were well aware of his behaviors, wtf kind of roll model are they looking for? Their home lives must have been devoid of common sense to say the least.

I love a person with the ability to stick to the facts and gather an opinion based solely upon facts. No one can argue with facts. One of my favorite channels💚
R.I.P X
What facts?? Sounds like his entire analysis is based on two radio interviews and news headlines. Not X's personal IG posts that are all over youtube. The 3 hr interview with Akademiks where he described his sense of responsibility inspite of his personal struggles to, to help kids like him get through the troubles he's experienced. His charity work. His mother dropping him at random ppls houses with no diapers or formula and going off with her bf and stripping and prostituting. Getting in fights in school so his mom would be called so he could get to see her. He has abondonment issues. Witnessed violence against his mom not just the one time at 6. Multiple times. Learned relationships from his parents and his mom and her pimp. Repeatedly saying no one cares about him other than his money. He wants to die but he has responsibilities to the ppl who tell him, like Curt Kobain, that his music keeps them going. He encouraged his fans to practice the laws of the universe. Journal and chase their dreams. He was tortured and there's no question as to why. It's not an excuse for his behavior but a reason. The fact he left behind a son he didn't get to see born. I could go on and on. The little snide comments Mr. Grande makes aren't funny. Ppl are really hurting and acting out as a result of that. No OCEAN breakdown is going to explain that. The human brain it too complex. Too many variables. There's no coincidence that he said he would be reborn after he died and that the last two music vids he shot was of him attending his owm funeral, mastering his mind and observing life in the afterlife. Then finding out two days after his death he had a son on the way that is his spitting image.
@No One you really got to look into him more , all that stuff that dr grande said was from the media’s perspective not X’s perspective

how can you compare 69 and x when they had COMPLETELY different outlooks on life.
X had a difficult start and the destruction that followed him was proof....you can see it in his music at the beginning he was soo angry and although he was turning things around he had a lot of issues.
this is also why millions are attracted to his music
@@stanza2768 that soo true he gave a voice to those who felt like they didn't have one.

I was heartbroken. After time went in and I realized the kind of shit he’d been involved in I no longer saw him solely as a victim. I think when considering X’s life, I think we can’t forget that he was only 19 years old when he died. He was barely even an adult who never got any real help (and he definitely didn’t have those options growing up). It’s sad 😥
He was 20 when he died. Is your sympathy specific to him or do you have it for all criminals? He robbed people, stabbed people, beat women, etc. even threatening his best friend Ski's family and him. Should we say that about the Florida Shooter Nik Cruz too? How he never got help or are we just going to pretend they don't have free will & therefore no accountability?
He isn't exactly clean you know
@@mewntay230 Should we say this about nik cruz too? Yes. Your childhood can have a big impact on your mental state. I don't blame criminals for what they do.
@@aladdin8260 Still causing damage regardless. And in society when you cause damage you are dealt with. If you were robbed, beat up, incapacitated, would you still be as forgiving? But what you do with that hand determines your fate. Period.
So true. I think that is what a lot of people forget. He didn't have time to mature, he didn't have time to learn, or repent. When you grow up in an environment full of neglect and abuse surrounded by the romanticization of violence you are almost bound to go down a twisted path.

That's the sad thing about the entertainment industry - the image and story of the artist is just as important as the music. That coupled with the negativity bias of the brain means that bad press gets seen more than positive press. Like if X was just a nice kid who made music on the weekends while studying at Christian University, literally no one would care. This is almost the same as Dr. Grande's channel - serial killers, conmen, mental disorders, etc. get the clicks. If this channel was dedicated to healthy individuals leading productive lives and not a veritable freak show, then I doubt anyone would watch.

R.I.P X
I wasn't really a fan of xxxtentacion, but listened to his music sometimes. Based on his lyrics he seemed to have many secrets, but was capable of feeling remorse.
This one felt incomplete, xxxtentacion was the closest to a cult leader figure I have seen in music, he was definitely more influential than this piece made him seem.
That's because the doctor's analysis was based on limited, superficial research. He looked up highlights of his criminal record, but didn't take a macro approach to his entire life.
That's exactly how I was feeling and it's where I can't like nor can I dislike it. Like MouthSoap says he looked up very limited info, most likely from his wikipedia page or something similar and it really just felt, disrespectful but not on purpose. This made X look more like a pure cold blooded criminal and didn't delve into what his music actually was rather than violent crime rap. Even during his soundcloud days where he was at his most violence we saw songs like Snow, that show his weaknesses and his depression that was most likely the reasons for his actions, attempts to make himself either fill the hole in his heart or to just sustain and get by, which is no excuse for his actions at all but the origin of his actions. X obviously wasn't proud of his life, hence late 2017 and 2018 where he did his best to change his life around to be a better person, something he achieved but was ultimately murdered once it happened. I won't get mad at the doctor though, he seemed very misinformed and just overall limited to what he could fully learn so, it makes sense why the video is the way it is.
I think that if X wasn’t a musician, he would’ve made a great cult leader. I mean some of y’all acted like he could do no wrong!

I remember someone put the video of his recently deceased corpse on Facebook, they were laughing. I don’t think I’ll forget that image. Whatever he did in life, it’s horrible to see how it ended.
Yeah, I saw that as well, shit traumatized me tbh
Such a young talented kid, very troubled but an extremely fucked up way die and then have people filming your body. Didn’t deserve that.
Yeah nah thats fucked this is one of the reasons his best friend tankhead killed someone that dissed x after x passed he was very protective over xs name and reputation
Fun fact: I knew him when he was a kid. My cousin was best friends with him when they were kids. I used to baby sit them and he was a bad kid. He always influenced my cousin to act bad when they were together. They were very unruly and did not give a shit for adult commands.
It’s sad, because while his adult actions are not justified, he was definitely groomed to be the adult he was. No rules. No care for another. Sad.
It’s the main reason I don’t want to have kids. Always look to the parents. They failed their child.
It’s not always nor is it fully the parents. Lots of things can be factors. Maybe in his case it contributed largely but many ppl who come from loving homes turn out bad and vice versa. There’s school, friends, society.
@@teresahowick5197 That’s understood. However in this case, it’s definitely the parents. He wasraised with no rules and never taught how to care for others. It’s sad. Understand society + other things come into play, but it’s the parents job to teach their kids basic manners and morals. The rest is up in the air. But what do you expect from a adult that never learned wrong from right as a kid?
@@valeries3829 oh I agree. For sure. That’s awful how he was brought up.
Yes. While I have sympathy for the baby and little boy he was, the violent adult deserved to stay behind bars for sure. Music industry will never be choosy...only care if you make them money.
It’s clear you have a biased or didnt do enough research. What crimes did he do when he was famous? He blew up after getting arrested for allegedly beating his ex who’s name on ig is “liar” wonder what that means never seen someone so off he even said before he blew up on his no jumper interview that he wants to positively affect his fan base and lead them the right way. I remember his rise and sudden death. He was a very polarizing figure within the hip hop community. Unfortunately the culture he was a part of kind of perpetuates violence. Seems like he had 1 foot in and 1 foot out as he tried to be charitable but still involved in his harsh life.
Good one doc!
Solid analysis, Dr. Grande. I can't claim to know what your childhood was like or who you are as a person, but I can almost guarantee it was nothing like Jahseh's. You have probably always been well adjusted or at least reasonable. If you grew up like him, you would probably understand why his mind worked the way it did. His music reflected the way his mind worked and it was wonderful and refreshing, in a creative sense.
This is so true because living in the ghetto is very hard I was extremely traumatized then it got all better and this is why this video irritates me so badly
This was very interesting, but one of the things you got quite wrong is that you said you didn't know why he'd commit robberies when he was already making it as a rapper. From all points of view he had stopped doing BnEs and robberies before his death because he had millions of dollars. He was trying to turn his life around. i understand that you may not have done super in depth research on him before making the video but you did a good job with what you know, there's just a few things mistaken.
I made a video about him the year he died about how he built a cult, but I did it before understanding a lot about him. I have since "researched" a lot (AKA find him fascinating and so I read up on him a lot) and understand a lot of things I was wrong about in regards to him
Nothing he could ever contribute musically, or any other way to society could make up for what he took away from it.
Thanks Dr Grande

@@theuprising4847 Yes, there is the possibility that he was CHOOSING to do the bad things he did. If his upbringing did not help, he doesn't seem to have shown lots of ways in which he was trying to reverse a future that appeared as an inevitable dark thundercloud ahead of him.
@@user-pi6yr8vq6m I really wish people could be changed from their destructive ways and could more easily find that recovery you mention. Unfortunately, the preponderance of evidence seems to indicate that that would have been VERY UNLIKELY for him, especially when you consider just how impulsively violent he was. That indicates a personality disorder of some kind. One that you don't just "really change" on your own. He really did have an uphill battle. Being praised as an artist WHILE he was violent toward people really wasn't helping him much.

Let's consider popular music and what it means: that the art form is crafted for a low education public (the education level has declined from folk to rap) and the sine qua non, profit. You can't make a competitive profit (investors cause the equation) without telling your public they are important. This is where classical music forms diverge: they require their audiences to reach to comprehend a work of genius. Rap is important to the self assurance of life's downtrodden and we should not forget that function. When I read in the NYT Art pages that it's the newest and biggest wave, I can see that in the scope of popular art, it is, but in the world of major art it isn't a footnote. Its function is more sociological.
It's persistent beat combined with doggerel. I do not compose music. Years ago critics deplored "elevator music" which was just white noise and yet it had the same repetitious elements that rap employs. I hope that I haven't offended but truth need out.@ἀστραπή
@ἀστραπή Thank you for the considered, polite reply. I don't disagree with what you said and I probably failed to say that I like simple music from the people. I don't dislike rap and I do like the blues which is a very simple form of music. Simple certainly doesn't mean ineffective. I do have a problem with the fuss every generation of pre adults makes over its signature music. Now you have me right, I was born immediately after WW II and really prefer music from The American Songbook but was a very early Bob Dillon appreciator, you know, all that stuff. My generation took its music too seriously, far too seriously, and perverted it into "social statements" and eventually a culture war. Nobody is standing at the pulpit here. I grew up in a musical household and was exposed to the kind of music 1940's folks liked. Then on to very early rock n roll and folk and so on. I have been amazed by music from some great artists of every generation I have witnessed. Nobody has a lock on culture.
Dr. Grande, I would love to see a video on one of my favorite artists and a kind role model, Lil Peep. There is footage from his funeral service including his mother's and ex-girlfriend's speeches, a beautiful look into what he meant to those closest to him. Thank you and hope you're well.

@@MoeMontey713 At the end of his life, he started to focus on the more positive things and started to change his entire outlook. I’m not gonna say he’s a perfect person and should be accountable for certain things, but I believe if he had more time to grow then people would’ve been more understanding with him. His death was unexpected and didn’t have enough time to let that change grow more unfortunately and it’s a sad case now that we have mixed biased views about him now.
Yeah and that "false hero" bit at the end was questionable. Young people looked up to him because he was genuinely trying to be a positive role model after his life of crime. His social media posts (which have all since been archived/deleted as far as I'm aware) were a reflection of that

He really isn't a criminal. He was caught up in a domestic violence situation, but he didn't have a record of repeat crimes. Also, his career did take a hit after the Rihanna fiasco. He still makes music, but he lost his national and global sponsorships and many fans. Now, he has a cult following, but any intention of him becoming the next Michael Jackson is out the window.
@@TheMouthSoap he is a criminal. he has charges of domestic abuse, pulled a gun on rihanna and abused her, then tattoed her bruised face on his neck. he alsp started a fight with frank ocean and has anger issues
If anyone knows jah all the “crimes”he’s done since becoming known are from the past lol sometimes the law wanna catch up when you doing good. The ones with his fans, he warns you before he’s gonna do something & too knock off whatever you doing that bothers him. you do it again he will handle it as a man how is that a crime? You’d do the same in his position with 100,000 plus people tryna touch you in places you don’t wanna be touched. He never abused his girl if you know him he loved her to death & tried getting her clean off drugs she was one of the reason he was so depressed because he felt betrayed by the only women he loved close by his mother. That’s why jah would do so many crimes back in his younger days his mother was a stripper and he just wanted attention from her & his mother’s love again how can you blame him?. Jahseh never got knocked out he got sucked punched lol, why do people only try to glorify the mistakes in one when no one is perfect just because he’s made different mistakes then you doesn’t give you the right to knock this man down like he portrayed crime. X did good just sometimes your past mistakes catch up yes x was a “ criminal “ back then I guess you can say but he did it for attention from his mother the only person that was still in the picture since his dad got locked up and ended up moving back to Jamaica. Jah changed in many different ways his insane that he was human, my guy was a charismatic person, he loved to laugh & especially seeing other people laugh. He had character someone you can relate too. Yet he felt alone because that’s all he’s ever known, when your locked up for a crime you know you didn’t commit it fucks with you mentally and physically. When you talk about his “crimes” talk about how he tried to change the world by trying to unite as one , he would host charities he would donate to his community, he made a song for parkland when the shooting happened and also visited the victims involved. Not only that he also even hosted a free show, and even before his death day legit hours before he posted on his ig that he wanted to host a charity in his community. When you talk about jahseh don’t only talk about his “crimes” talk about how he impacted thousands of people to remain positive and to keep pushing forward when its rough. LONG LIVE JAHSEH ONFROY 🖤🦋

It ties in my mind to the case of GG Allin. Feeling that danger and having a villain/anti-hero character to attach yourself to is exciting. It makes you feel dangerous by association to the art, and the reality of the crimes makes that danger feel more genuine.

This is why lil Peep didn't want to make a record with X. He also hurt a mentally fragile girl whom later killed herself in a hotel room he dumped her at. The song Jocelyn is influenced by it. I don't get why he was worshipped. Thank you for the range of people you cover, Dr. Grande. ❤️🔥
Hey, so this isn’t true. The real reason why Lil Peep and X didn’t hit it off is because members of GBC stayed at Ski Mask’s house, and some clothes got stolen. People accused Peep of stealing the clothes, but it was actually Yunggoth. X didn’t like Peep when he initially heard that, but when he realized Peep had zero involvement in the stolen clothes, X didn’t have a problem with Peep anymore. Peep’s closest friends say that he actually wanted to meet X in Florida in early November 2017.
The Jocelyn Flores thing retarded as well and very incorrect.

I think you over- generalize rappers: 1. They are not all Xxx. 2. I think it is important to delve deep and understand how people connect w XXX and other rappers in terms of their lyrics and beats. I think people connect to feeling trapped by structural factors: a lack of resources, feeling stereotyped, and...a criminal social identity seems a life sentence.
