We wanted to show you how the Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is the perfect school run car, but due to restrictions we had to replace school children with some very well behaved dogs instead!
The XC40 P8 Recharge might be big and heavy, but it also has the stability and safety you would expect from Volvo. Despite being a 5-seater family car it offers some serious performance with a decent range and the ability to rapid charge.
There's nothing wrong with it, its a joy to drive, but it's expensive and when you consider the petrol version is around half the price you have to wonder why they can't make the electric model more affordable.

Nice car, BUT £60k? Err, no thanks.
That cost too much the plug-in hybrid version is much better but for some reason it’s not four-wheel-drive and annoyingly they don’t make a V 60 cross country thats hybrid🤯🤬🤬🤯👎
Cheers from Aussie upside down land!
WHAT'S MY RANGE? :)) I cannot believe you haven't thought of that. :)
In over 40 years on the road, I've never allowed a dog into a car. It's unlikely that I ever shall.
Can we all appreciate how Fully Charged is 100% transparent and honest about ludicrous pricing scheme and low effort from manufacturers to NOT drive prices down? Take any other "regular" car review, they NEVER speak their mind about the price and certainly NEVER criticize a pricetag. Fully Charged is the only "mainstream" (and I think it's ironic to write this now about FC) media to denounce this. This is why I'm a supporter. Keep doing what you guys are doing, this is amazing. Laughed my ass off, enjoyed the doggos and clapped hard at Bobby speaking truths. Another great episode
The fun thing is that in Denmark most cars cost double of what you would pay in other countries. So we are used to high prices.
However, for what you get, and in comparison to other cars in Denmark, the XC40 recharge is reasonably priced and I am so happy about it. It still is lots of money, but it is not impossible.
I do like the Swedish Death Metal noise it makes when moving, none of that futuristic stuff like the Taycan and etron GT.
I was wondering the same :D
It is the Song Bleed by Meshuggah :) fantastic band.
Oh. I thought that there was a fault with a wheel bearing. 😁
@@RWBHere Nice one 😂😂
My Mind was blowned when I heard it. But then I thought I had imagined it. Great taste in music, Robert.
Bleed by Meshuggah snuck in under the calm piano music. @4:00-4:16
Nice little easter egg.
Good ear. I thought it was lamb of God or something. Didn't know he had it in him.
Classic Llewellyn to be blasting some lovely Meshuggah.
👏🏻👏🏻king👏🏻shit👏🏻👏🏻
I thought it was Napham Death.
YEAH i thought iam the only one who got it. I hoped the song to go full volume. Cant believe he is blasting Meshugga while doin a review :D
Well done, Robert and the Fully Charged team, for openly and unambiguously highlighting the frankly ludicrous pricing by these car manufacturers. For years and years, the barriers to entry were the lack of cars, range anxiety and the charging network. They are no longer problems It is now price, and it has to change to make mass adoption of this technology possible. Keep up the fantastic work.
Volvo (and the other ICE manufacturers) have two promlems: 1) battery supply is constrained by however many their suppliers are able to make (never enough) so they need to temper demand and 2) the current need to not cannibalise ICE sales. Because, for most people, the simple fact is that EV's are just better. They^re faster, cheaper to run, quieter, smoother so, when faced with an equal choice, who wouldn't go for the EV?
Faced with these problems, and finding themselves supply constrained, the manufacturers opt for premium pricing. Like you say, this has to change or Tesla (and maybe some of the other better-funded EV startups) will eat them for lunch. ICE manufacturers find themselves between a rock and a hard place, basically.
@@jayarbe60 I like sporty petrol cars though.
@@Darkest_matter Fair enough. I did say most people would choose the EV. Not everyone... :^)
@@jayarbe60 I'd choose an EV if it was cheaper
@@jayarbe60 I think this is spot on. the wait for this car is already many months (probably because of the semi-conductor shortages).

Another brilliantly done review, from Robert and the fullycharged team. I so look forward to your uploads. Thankyou!!❤👍👍👍👍
Such a huge fan of your videos and podcasts. Thank you so much from Switzerland 😊
Wow, was hoping for a volvo xc40 recharge video from you. Does not disappoint!
I love how in-depth these videos are!!!
10:53 For those wondering, this is 13-pin to 7-pin trailer socket adaptor. This one actually has two 7-pin sockets - one for standard functions (turn indicators, brake lights, tail lights) that all trailers must have and one for secondary functions (fog lights, reversing lights, +12V permanent (usually refrigerator in caravans) +12V via ignition lock) that most trailers don't have. It is usually caravans that utilise such functionality.
13-pin (ISO 11446) is newer standard that incorporates all of the functions above and currently you often need an adaptor. Some basic trailers are still manufactured with 7-pin (ISO 1724) plug, despite most new cars being fitted (in case of factory fitted towbar) with 13-pin socket.
Thought the car was making a strange noise! Then realised Robert was listening to heavy rock/metal!
Swedish Death Metal to be precise
Lol! Not what i expected coming out of a SUV Volvo
I thought it was the pedestrian warning noise at first!
@@shonunezekiel - It was. The heavy rock that he referred to and used to try out the Harman Whatsit stereo was something entirely different.
This was just some very muted pedestrian warning noise. Swedish Death Metal, ha, ha, ha. A bit of a Volvo joke, no doubt, but marginally better than the usual electronic beeps and burbles.
I thought I heard Meshuggah! That's brilliant!
Entertaining as always Robert thank you.
I think I could watch this kind of video exclusively for the rest of my life. Dogs and EV’s 😍👍🏼
I really can’t see them selling too many of these at that price.
That pricing is very deliberate. It is specifically set so they won't sell any in the UK! Volvo don't *want* to sell any in the UK.
Germany is the hottest EV market right now with lots of subsidies. Not a bad offer after all those. People have always paid more to drive a Volvo.
I think you may be missing a key point about EV ownership. Some evangelical peeps are actually PROUD that they have to pay more for their vehicles.
By paying more than others can afford, their commitment to a greener future is recognised and applauded by the community. Paying through the nose is glorious and a clear endorsement of their planet-saving credentials. Why, they're virtually superheroes.
A cheap EV would be anathema.
Paying a lot for their vision of the future gives them a warm sense of self-worth as they sacrifice their disposable income for the greater good of mankind.
Yay.
The idea of a cheap, simple, common EV offends them because it doesn't take their religion seriously enough. It's a little bit like veganism in that respect: some people just quietly live the lifestyle and get on with things, but others are militant and take every opportunity to announce their choice. They begin every sentence with "Well, speaking as a vegan, I find that -"
Many EV owners aren't too different. Read a few Comment sections either here or on the Transport Evolved channel and see how often the word Tesla crops up. "Well, speaking as a Tesla owner, I find that -"
Yeah, right, thanks for that.
People like to make it perfectly clear that they're nobly and heroically paying a premium to keep the EV future alive and selflessly giving whatever the manufacturers demand. Because they're patriots too, of course, and China might be watching.
Also, they don't want to be overlooked when their lord and saviour Ego Muskrat welcomes them to heaven (on Mars) and hands out the clouds, iHarps and carbon-fibre angel wings.
I imagine that British Volvo owners will love the fact that their 'statement' has cost them an extra £20,000. EVs for proper people have to be reassuringly expensive, like BMWs.
Why get a free dog from the rescue home when you can spend £8,000 on a pedigree puppy?
Mmm... Satisfying...
Norway have sold 1530 of those this year so far.
Way too expensive - especially when it's made in China, or uses a Chinese platform, or "running gear" as Robert describes it. None of the major established carmakers want to sell EV's until they absolutely have to, and they will be able to keep the prices high until ICE cars are no longer allowed to be sold.
Ok, I was already happy to watch the show, but when my pup saw the other dogs, he insisted on watching the episode with me...multiple times.
30 seconds into the video and already my favourite FCS video. Let’s keep the dogs in all the reviews?
Another quality review. This channel convinced me of the benefits of electric cars, which will be my next choice. Thank you
It's way too expensive for such a car, even in Europe I wouldn't pay that much
Umm it’s a Volvo what chu expect
Great to finally see a review about compatibility with dogs! When we had a Newfoundland (which is huge), no saloon/ hatch or estate car had enough headroom. Even Volvo's XC90 SUV was nowhere near big enough.
It took a small Van (Transit Connect, VW Caddy or Citroen Berlingo) to fit him in the back.
Now we have to buy a car for a Bernese Mountain Dog, which is smaller but still large.
The XC40 Recharge, Ionic5, Mustang Mach E, Tesla Model 3 are all too small in the back.
The Answer? A Skoda Enyaq.
Good review Robert, many thanks for this.
They like dags I guess :). I'm working on getting into a P*2 soon and I also have a dag. Sort of a Volvo then? You're well quotable too Robert great video every time:
"Sometimes when I try and explain how things work, they don't work."
Wow... In Canada, this car starts at 64,950 CND (37,500£)... In Australia, this would be 68,000 AUD instead of the expected 97,000 AUD... I guess driving on the wrong side of the road comes at a price...
71,000 in Australia in 2023
Volvo XC40 Recharge base price is $65,000 CAD (£37,500) here in Canada.
probably a Brexit thing with customs and duties
Great review! Subscribed.
I just ❤️ those doggies ! And your sense of humor !
Nice to see the (brief) inclusion of the 'weather' infographic (sunny intervals, windy, etc) - handy for comparing reviews in different conditions.
Yes, we are trying to bring it into all our car reviews now. Gives the viewer a better sense of range with the conditions we are putting them through.
That awful colour looks so good on this car, however, the price does not.
nope the color looks like someone vomited up pea soup.
I have this car in the US. It’s phenomenal. Legit got it over competition for my dogs. Huge Great Dane and rottie. I think we might be Volvo for life now. Amazing car. But I wish it had an actual dog mode like Tesla does. The pre conditioning alone is not good enough to leave dogs in the car with hot weather. You can see the range under “range optimizer.”
Nice looking car but the pricing is baffling - why would you spend that on a small SUV when you could get a larger and more premium BMW iX3 or Jaguar IPace etc for the same price. This should be more like £40k IMO
He said in mainland Europe it is £40k equivalent. Much more reasonable price. Clearly Volvo just don’t want to sell these over here.
@@theta2170 rip-off Britain.....as usual 🥴

Ive got a 2 litre inscription pro petrol. Only done 2000mls so far but i love it, it just feels like a quality car, not the quickest but quick enough.
"Sometimes when I try and explain how things work, they don't work."
Every other journalist I know of usually does the hands-free tailgate demo about three times before it works. I seem to remember Robert only ever having to do it once every time.
Loved seeing the scenery around Minchinhampton common and Gloucester!
It priced at £60,000 because Volvo believe the UK public will pay that amount!!!!!
Watching this with the wife as she's after an EV too. We were fully on board with the Volvo until you got to the price . . . . Insanely expensive! That's a big no from us, you can go for the supremely excellent iPace for essentially the same money.
Similarly inefficient heffalump the ipace
@@Lewis_Standing Yes the iPace is certainly not the most efficient and a long way off my Model 3 but the point is if you’re spending £60k then at least go for the far better appointed car which the iPace is over the Volvo.
A mix between a Bond villain (little white on lap) & dogs arses front and centre - best start to a video ever - you editor is the new David lean
Robert you are one of my favorite people I've not met. I really hope to say thank you in person someday. See you then.
I’ve driven a gas(petrol) version of the XC-60 here in the USA. 2019 or 2018 model year. It has the pilot assist, which I was very impressed by the way it follows the curves, brakes (even to a stop) with a car in front of you, and goes again. I’m not saying it’s as good as Tesla Autopilot, because I haven’t driven a Tesla. But it is the best system I’ve driven, maybe second to a Tesla....
Clicked like just for the dogs.
Great review!!! I have a Petrol XC40 with a years lease left - This is one of the few cars I have ever thought to lease again - but I want an electric and Volvo - well you have a year to sort the price out! Let’s face it tho - most of the prestige makes are doing the same - where’s the incentive ? Maybe in 10 years they will get the message.
Great review. I did a comparison between this, the ford mach 3, vw id4, and model y..
(I lease volvo for over 17 years. Loyal customer)
I narrowed my decision between vw id4 awd vs tesla model y.
If id 4 awd has 300 mile range, it would be nice. But I decided on the ID4. 250 miles is ok. Be better to have 300 and after 15 years I have a 50 mile buffer. I am not getting a tesla for its racing speed and auto pilot.
Glad I stumbled across this channel. Work are changing the car lease scheme to only supply EV and PHEV cars, so you provide an excellent resource to see what is available…don’t know just yet tho which manufacturers we can choose from.
Glad to have you along for the EV ride
Great video. The Sono Sion is looking to address the 'We all don't need to individually own a car' issue with inbuilt software and App for community car sharing. I know you guys have tested the development model Sion so would be great to revisit closer to production date.
Your videos are great congratulations

Very good content as always , wondering if perhaps the high price is to push there month to month leasing program they started recently
Good presentation, thank you
Something people have to understand about this car is that it is fully loaded with all the extras. If you do the same with the ice version you get to a very similar prize. That's usually the strategy for all new cars, fully loaded while cheaper variants follow.
Thanks for another great video!
Great review. We have driven the diesel one since they were introduced, and it feels very loose to drive compared to my Tesla. The app works, and allows basic unlocking and seeing where the car is, trip recording and so forth. Very basic stuff compared to others and I hope the Recharge has a more complete app for an EV (time to charge, etc). Here in Switzerland I got a quote of around CHF 70K, which is more than the Diesel by about 15K, but the garage will always give a discount of some type when pushed. Might well trade in the Diesel for one.
Don't forget the UK pricing includes 20% VAT which goes straight to the government. US prices are quoted without sales tax (it varies by county in some states even) so it's not really a fair comparison.
But 10% import tax
Come on, he knows how to compare prices..
Meshuggah ✌️Respect! Haha love the video.
Best road test ever
The electric towbars are standard across the Volvo range. I have two :-) The Volvo Common Modular Architecture (CMA) platform was always designed for pure electric and plug-in hybrid.
"Will towing affect the range? DERRR" Hilarious 😂
absolutely hear you on riding a bike in the rain and snow, I gave my car up 2 years ago and have used my electric bike ever since, that said I've had enough, it's too cold in the UK to ride bikes all year round. We need something between a car and a bike!
Robert you're the Best !
I love the end point of this episode

30 seconds in and this my favorite review thus far.
I like the graphics, a very nice touch
My favorite cars reviewer in all channels
Always enjoy Robert's slightly quirky & amusing presentation - Thumbs up from me !!
Be interesting to see how Volvo's pricing strategy holds up when Tesla launch the Model Y in the UK....
It’s not holding well at the moment. My dealer said that a lease would be about £7k down and £700 per month. It’s a £30k car.......
Check out the Volvo subscription, sounds like it's cheaper than that dealer! Although still way too expensive.
Can lease an Audi etron for 600 a month with 1 month down.
@@mikeb1039 which electric cars are you talking about? Btw in five years mine had needed some new tyres and er... that's it.

LOL What a fabulous video & a superb XC40 Volvo EV 😍
The music coming in at 3:59 😂😂👌
I can't understand why the press car is provided still in its primer paint layer. What colour will it be, when they finish the job?
Whenever there is no 4g coverage, the car uses a different (internal) voice/sound. It also give much worse results, and not personalized.
Once you login to your own google account (if you are so inclined) the results and the software instantly becomes much much better.
My personal favourite is "call robert" which would then call to your most frequent robert contact. Doesn't matter if you have 10 roberts, it knows which one to call by default.
You can also set tags in google maps in and navigate to them (as in, you don't have to use an address). If I set up "Parental units" as a tag, I can then tell the car to "navigate to parental units".
By FAR the best infotainment system I've ever used.
Nice review!
Fold away trailer hitch is awesome. Robert calls a 3500 kg trailer chunky. I'd love to see his reaction to consumer pickup truck towing numbers in the US.
Listening to Meshuggah! Wow. 😍🤘
Great show!
I have a wall painted that colour, I love it
Haha 'shonky' - your wife has clearly been influencing your slang, love it! As a car it's fine but shocking how much money they want for it, esp compared to the petrol version!
can't wait for Dacia Spring review!
I love volvo cars * thanks for the amazing vedio*

The tunnel has the battery in it because the Polstar / XC40 has a T shaped battery back with the top of the T under the rear seat.
It's also one of the reasons that the rear floor doesn't push your knees up by your ears.
@@MiniVegas420Yo True, the reason it does well on interior space whilst being by modern standards relatively compact is that by not losing space in the footwells to a underfloor battery they provide the passengers with a more upright seating position. The downside being that it cannot offer a flat floor.
Best co-presenters ever!
11:30 This was a good moment for a short Robert failing compilation, maybe next time, when something is working right away :) :) :)
Great EV! For us at EVtest it is 15/18 :)
Looks like a great car, but I don't see why (for 60K!) you'd pick it over an I-Pace, or save some money and go for the ID4, Enyaq, Niro or Mach-e (or indeed a Model Y, whenever they come to the UK)
I do have this very expensive EV and I must say it's a joy, I've had a Tesla Model 3 and at first it was wonderful but after a while it began to fail at being a reliable car. Whereas this is, unassuming, spacious and performs really well, for me, worth the price even in the UK.
Unjustifiable price in the UK. Nothing else to see after hearing that price tag
*Mr. Llewellen* your show has really _gone to the dogs._ I for one *_approve._* 👍🤣
Good show Robert
Once again i am dumbfounded by auto manufacturers thinking that ANYBODY would think that an electric car at sixty thousand pounds would be an option when the same car with a combustion engine is less than half the price
for a box on wheels that moves you from point A to B economics will win every time and the manufacturer that realises this will be a very rich company
Superb review. Robert's style of car reviews is quite unique and entertaining. How about a Robert Llewellyn/Matt Watson collab? :D
Would appreciate your opinion guys.. is it better to go for XC40 recharge or for an EQA 250?
