Thank you for the overview on the 2023 Rise. My wife and I bought the Rise back in the early summer of 2021. What a fantastic bike! I still love riding my analog bikes, but the Rise is so much fun, it makes my face hurt from smiling so much. 🙂 At first the motor noise use to displease me a little because it sounded a little like chain slap, but I don't even notice it now.
I just ordered a 2022 Rise, with a good discount. Will be my 1st e bike. I was interested in the Rise because of the lighter weight, as I'm a small guy, and also getting older (64) have been looking at something like it for the past couple of years. The new version sounds great, but I expect it to be above my budget at the moment.
This was the same for me - just picked up a new M10 Rise for £5.5k and the new 2023 bike is £8k - £2.5k difference can buy another bike like a great Hardtail!!
Rob has a great history of the evolution of e mtn bikes. Side question: why hasn't Giant come up iwth a mid range offering? I did 2500 mtn miles on a 2021 Giant Trance E +, and life is so good on a H30 2021. I work a bit harder on the ups, but the DH on the H30 is an eye opener.
The main reason I sold my emtb back in 2019 was due to the excess weight and I'd got it down to 21.5kg. I've had an analogue mtb since (currently Cotic Bfe Max) and just love not straining my back getting it out of the back of my car. Love the idea behind the SL models but they are not what I'd call 'Superlight' yet. I might get another emtb when they get light enough or when I turn 70 in 10 years time 🤔
Removing the motor and battery from the Rise is really simple. The only special tool you will need is the large socket to remove the front chainring to allow access to all the motor bolts.
I’m just waiting to see what else is coming in the SL category. They’re so bloody expensive. I love my full fat eMTB but anything below 20kg would be lovely. I’m hoping Merida might come to the market with something cheaper. The Transition looks like an interesting proposition as well. These Orbea certainly win on aesthetic…
I was concerned about the rattle. I will be VERY interested in your review on that once you've ridden it! I did stop by the Orbea dealer today. For anyone interested: A 2022, 360wh large M20 came in at a very respectable 18.7Kg without pedals and a medium 2022 H10 540wh was 20.7Kg without pedals. My understanding is that the 252wh range extender is 1.4Kg. I tried the drop test on both and there was no noise, but I guess they are known for a rattle!
Strange: my dealer weighted the 2023 M10 size L at 19.5kg without pedals, but that was with the 200mm rotor up front and dissector (maxxterra) tyres on the rear. I'm not sure what was up front. It had the 360wh battery according to him. I heard this same value from another dealer that I was at, but this one actually weighted it for me. Now, the 2022 does feel light, but I can't imagine it being lighter than 2023.
Rob. Lots of guys made enduro bikes out of the previous orbea rise model, with 160/160 travel and 64 degree head angle. Will you do that with this bike also?
@@The67Crucible of course it killed it quick at 85Nm, 600W. The point is you can do it and it works with the old battery and tune it down if you want to 60Nm and 400W like the old motor

Hi Rob, Thanks for the video, it's super useful. Do you happen to know what the weights are off all the different 2023 models? Would you go for the 2023 H10 or M20?
funny thing, that RS badge fell of my bike a couple,of days after i put it back at 85 nm, don’t believe one second that the 60nm are hacked in rock, it’s just a number. oh and, 10 000+ km later, including a trip to naples (from Paris) i have heard that rattling noise once, and only because i watch your videos Rob :) i guess my ears are dead, or i just don’t see what you are talking about !
Good ! I changed that firmware to get the max power to 85Nm and the US region .. on my alloy Rise .. plenty of power and plenty of battery for a lot of fun
I watched your previous video on the older model, which was great. I have the Obrea Rise 2023 Carbon, my rides are 20-30 max on a MTB.. I have the 360, just thinking of buying the range extender instead of buying the 540 and having them swapped out. On my old Haibike 2.0 I had the Yamaha motor which I did like as well, but it tended to have too much torque when you didn't need it, especially on a single track! ;)
I know it would be expensive but I’d love to see a small battery EMTB but for it to have a recharge system similar to cars where the bike takes back lost energy through braking etc. that would be interesting
Great review! I have a 2022 H15. I’d love to upgrade to the new rise carbon M10 with the EP801 motor & a 540w battery. Have you noticed any difference in the power delivery with the EP801 (500w vs 600w)? Any punchier?, or does it feel the same as the EP8?
It really needs the stiffer shock mount. The entire rear end on the gen 1 was extremely sloppy but few reviews talk about it. The rattlemaster 3000 was the reason I sold it though. I could live with the backend noodle but not the rattle. Looking forward to hear if the updates solve those issues.
if it s better now as the ep8.01 i hope shimano can give the option to purchase the component upgrade frome the ep8 to the new version, would love to hear less rattling noise whene descending
@@RobRidesEMTB Looking forward to your analysis. I'm in the market right now and thinking about this bike or the Trek EXe. If the new EP801 has that same rattle then that could be the deciding factor.
I coul'd give you an answer to your question. Two weeks ago, during the bikes show "Velofollies" in Belgium, i asked the same question at de stand Shimano and they say that it won't be possible to upgrade the EP800 to EP801, nevertheless it will be possible to replace the actual EP800 by the EP801 but it will cost a lot - necessary to replace also the battery (not the same interne software used!), the control button (bluetooth) + the display (if there is a display). So very expensive!
Love your video's Rob, you forgot to mention the new Giant trance ADVANCED E+ ELITE models 18kg with full power motor, but 400 whr battery. I'm looking for first EMTB. Thinking the giant might be good option as offers more options on power setup so if want to ride with mates on manual bike or a mid power bike you can. Love the rise also as i don't want bike thats really heavy! Too many good options to chose from!
@RobRidesEMTB when is the full test/review coming? 😎 I think im gonna go with a light eMTB, waiting for Pinion MGU to become more popular and available.
This--or Trek Fuel Exe? Midwest/Michigan USA single track with little rock gardens, some roots, mostly sand and damp dirt and series of relatively smaller hills.
I bought the Rise in December alloy version only 2 rides in at moment due to crap weather, I think it’s great and plenty of power not even used boost yet and haven’t noticed the rattle yet either.
I'm curious about E-tuned forks light compression tune. I don't have an E-bike but might be able to get a good deal on an E-tune version of the Fox 36. I'm assuming I can add 1 or 2 more clicks of compression damping to make it feel like the regular tune.
Rob I’m literally just about to get the 2023 Rise M10 after selling my 2021 M10 , can you please please advise is it better to save up some money and get the latest 2024 Rise LT with its 85 nm and 630W battery 🔋??? Advice please ( note I only ride about 3/4 hours on the trails ) Thanks 🙏
I have the Rise M10 Spec with Upgrade to shimano 8120 brakes and 203mm xtr Discs and raceface Pedals. Also in XL but mine weighs around 19,9kg (also 360Wh Battery). The difference is more than 2kg 😮 compared to the one in the Video
Does the new link in the rear suspension fit the older hydro rise? 60 nm is plenty, I normally use it in eco with 33 nm and use the gears to keep the cadence up, to climb virtually any hill.
The EP801 seems to have handled the complaints with the "old EP8". EMTB Forums says the same thing about the new motor, changes seem small but really its a game changer. Geez all those EP8 bikes including some big names are instantly out dated..
Fantastic review as always Rob! I just demo'd and reviewed the Pivot Shuttle SL on my channel which is pretty much a copy of the OG Rise. But with the Fazua Ride 60 motor. After riding the Shuttle SL (at a mere $13k USD for the XTR 38 pound build), I can't say I really enjoyed the power and smoothness (or lack thereof) of the Fazua. It's a great trail bike (150 up front and 132 on back, based on the Pivot Trail 429 platform) and literally feels like riding a regular bike. But I MUCH prefer the power and smoothness of Rocky Mountain's own Dyname 4.0 motor. Super "natural" feel to it. Gotta say, I LOVE the look of that new Rise. The matte blue is stellar. Question - is the display now only those tiny LED's on the handlebar shifter that you showed? I'm hoping to demo one of the old (or new hopefully) Rise. Excited to compare it to the Shuttle SL. Thanks as always! 😄
Rob - you've got a choice: brand new 2022 Orbea Rise M10 for £5,500 or the new 2023 Orbea Rise M10 for £8,000 - which do you choose? Is the new bike worth £2,500 more?
@@RobRidesEMTB Thanks for the informative review Rob! I love the bike and this color. I didn’t see Navy blue on their website but the closest I saw was mulberry-black. Is that what they call this color scheme?
How long does it take to charge the internal battery? I drive an electric vehicle and I can charge the bicycle battery from my parked car during a break
I got lucky with my H30 Rise, I got SCE-7000 screen and Deore M-6100 brakes. I never got to ask if this was a dealer upgrade or something that came from Orbea. Maybe someone here knows.
Bye bye lifetime Orbea warranty. Maybe if you bought the bike second hand. Also you lose the functionality of the app, and the range would be terrible.
Just out of curiosity Rob: What is the MOST mileage you have EVER put on an eMTB before 'swapping' out? Thanks for your time and attention to us punters 😉
And to me, the reason for buying the aluminium frame version rather than the carbon one, has nowt to do with battery capacity... more the price difference. I could've got a Rise H30 for £3,699 recently, 24% discount. I was tempted but still too heavy.
Love the bike except for the motor, I vowed never to touch another Shimano powered ebike again, I think there need to be more long term reviews especially around reliability.
I was interested to see if the geometry had been updated, sadly it appears not. I was interested in a discounted H30 as my first eBike but I'm a L for leg length and XL for reach but the XL doesn't work for me due to the very long seat tube, I'd be limited to a 120mm dropper instead of my usual 170mm. I guess I need to look elsewhere, looks great though.
Give me the led box any day over the integrated internal handle bar cabel routing! That s@#t sucks. Hate all these companies going to headset/handlebar routing! Don't need it, don't want it! Glad I have the 1st gen!
I'm hoping/looking forward to Nukeproof bringing out a lightweight Eeb. There does seem to be a love hate relationship out there with the Shimano motors, but I'm now on my 3rd Shimano perfectly powered ebike and am excited to see the next stage 🙌
Love the channel mate, but you didn't mention if Shimano have improved reliability with their motor. The Shimano EP8 has got to be one of the worst electric motors ever designed, no aftermarket parts available, only a 2 year warranty from the original purchase date which means if you are waiting for a replacement motor as you inevitably will, the warranty just runs away from you. I would never buy a Shimano equipped ebike again, ever! Even their brakes have went down the pan since 2020. You can't even sell a Shimano equipped ebike that is a year old due to the risk of failure. I would personally like to see a 4 year warranty that is transferable to a new owner. Sorry, not a rant but every one of my mates with the EP8 or EP8RS motor has had to have theirs replaced, some with only 100 miles on them. Mine got to 600 miles. Personally, I know you are doing a quick review and it's not an Orbea issue but surely a mention of this must be made to warn people of their potential financial loss?
Curious why someone would buy one of these over something like the Trek Fuel EXe or Transition Relay? The Relay provides the same power, is quieter, and more stealthy. Trek is the same, but with slightly less power. And with both of those you can swap out batteries or even run them without the battery for park days.
Well it's the difference between a 15-17kg bike and a 19+kg bike. You make the battery removable, and it adds weight. All depends on what you are after
The Trek slightly less power ??? ... you are far away from the truth, and the weight of the Trek is above the one of the Orbea... and i don't have an Orbea!
Trek has only 35nm and the Rise 60nm - it's nearly 50% less power and nearly 50% more in price for a similar spec. You'd have to be mad to buy an EXe over a Rise.
Prices of bikes are getting out of hand. This, fuel EXe, Turbo Levo, Lumen etc. are all great... but damn, so much moolah. Also, the non-removable battery sucks a little :(

EP801 seems promising, but I wish Orbea would have made the seat tube shorter in this redesigned XL size frame.
Second this on all the frame sizes. I'm 5'8 on a medium and my feet barely touch the ground at the lowest position.
the downtube is actually slightly thicker, to accomodate the new battery (hence better frontal stiffness)

How often do people de tune the motor to make it full power? Since it’s the same hardware it seems easy to make it full power.
Bye bye lifetime Orbea warranty. Maybe if you bought the bike second hand. Also you lose the functionality of the app, and the range would be terrible.
17.6kg in XL? Wow is this with 360wh battery right?
and how many cable holes? in that upper headset part?
I'm guessing that's the 360w. I was curious too. Rob, inquiring minds want to know. 📣
I am a bit confused, on the website the Mteam has the new XT DI2 and this bike XTR …
They mixed the Ltd and m10 configuration
Nice Review Rob!
Will it be possible to change the Battery in the 2020 Model to the new 520WH ?
Don't quote me but I heard on the bottom tube is slightly bigger on the carbon models so the 520 doesn't fit the pre 2023 models.
Is the bike weighted with 360 battery?
Yes
Just out of curiosity Rob: What is the MOST mileage you have EVER put on an eMTB before 'swapping' out? Thanks for your time and attention to us punters 😉
1000km roughly, on my own bikes. I tend to buy a bike every year. In 2022 I covered 3200 KM across a range of bikes.
@@RobRidesEMTB Only 3200 km? I put 12,000 kms on my first Bosch DU in a year!
Thanks for the reply
Seatpost drop 150?
How tall are you ?
Rise vs Shuttle SL vs Trek Fuel E
What is the shimano model of the cranks?
M8150
I had one, I was expecting the first change would be a lower standover🫣 why?? Look at the height of that xl . All of the new wilds are nice and low
I’m NOT a fan of the “Go’n Backwards” low power bikes.
Give Me FULL POWER ebikes
And to me, the reason for buying the aluminium frame version rather than the carbon one, has nowt to do with battery capacity... more the price difference.
I could've got a Rise H30 for £3,699 recently, 24% discount. I was tempted but still too heavy.
I just picked up a new 2022 M10 for £5.5k (rrp £8k). The shop also had the H10 in stock and it was £400 MORE! Mad.
Can you give weights and distances in lbs and feet too
Google is your friend.😉
orbea rise or wild ?)
Love the bike except for the motor, I vowed never to touch another Shimano powered ebike again, I think there need to be more long term reviews especially around reliability.
You can’t swap the battery on the fly, but you can do it yourself at home.
I love the argument that bikes are lighter and lighter. Yes, but they are more and more expensive. And what about battery after two years?
It's stumpjumper from 2007
my orbea rise ltd is perfect, thank, you ! ->hiding head under sand.
Buy the L if it’s close, it’s more nimble. Orbeas are more upright than many others.
Give me the led box any day over the integrated internal handle bar cabel routing! That s@#t sucks. Hate all these companies going to headset/handlebar routing! Don't need it, don't want it! Glad I have the 1st gen!
My thoughts too 👊🏽
I'd want to save at least 7kg to drop in my power I think. 15kg is mental.
I'm hoping/looking forward to Nukeproof bringing out a lightweight Eeb. There does seem to be a love hate relationship out there with the Shimano motors, but I'm now on my 3rd Shimano perfectly powered ebike and am excited to see the next stage 🙌
Hmm, this or the Relay?
kenevo SL?
@@perspectivedetective2703 meh, ugly
@@Rubblechops Fairysnuff
My question also. Waiting for spec and price!
@@perspectivedetective2703 Though I will say, the choice of colours on the Relay is shit. I mean blue or grey? Barf
All depends on what you are after
The Trek is @ double the price
The Trek slightly less power ??? ... you are far away from the truth, and the weight of the Trek is above the one of the Orbea... and i don't have an Orbea!
Trek has only 35nm and the Rise 60nm - it's nearly 50% less power and nearly 50% more in price for a similar spec. You'd have to be mad to buy an EXe over a Rise.
@@andywmoffat the Trek Fuel EXe has 50Nm of torque. It's the Specialized Levo SL that has 35Nm of torque.
Prices of bikes are getting out of hand. This, fuel EXe, Turbo Levo, Lumen etc. are all great... but damn, so much moolah.
Also, the non-removable battery sucks a little :(
