Great video Rob. Honest and relevant comments throughout which is very informative I recently took delivery of my - Orbea Rise M20 2021 - Coal Blue / Red Gold and really like it . I previously had a Canyon Spectral On which was really good but I found it too heavy and it was too easy to just plough through trails like a monster truck. Going down hill at over 40 mph over rough terrain was exhilarating but not my typical type of ride experience I do nearly all of my riding in eco or trail mode. I also switch off the motors and run sections unaided to keep my fitness level consistent - 61 now and have been riding MTBs since I was in my early 20s and still ride my Whyte 901 too The Rise is fitted with Shimano SC-EM800 Display and that allows me to see at a glance speed , range etc I took the bike to Swinley Forrest the other day and it handled the trails there brilliantly. Great work Rob!. I've been riding my new Rise for about a month now, and I'm really impressed by the range and efficiency as well. I've not run it through a full charge in a single ride yet, but I have done a wide variety of rides from rolling XC to park-style loops with a lot of vertical in a short distance, and I've done rides fully in Eco, fully in Trail, fully in Boost, and a mix. On every ride that I have checked, if I extrapolate based on my actual elevation gain, distance, and battery % used, it fully matches what Orbea claim in their marketing (website) and in the Blue Paper (owners book). Deeply impressed, both by the bike, and by the honestly of Orbea's claims on the range. I've not seen any need to even contemplate the range extender yet; for various reasons, I don't have time for rides that would be long enough to require it!
Another great video Rob. Really useful to see just how far you can go on one of these 'small' eMTBs. Orbea really have nailed it with the Rise. Yet to do a range test on my Marin Alpine Trail E1 but its on my list of vids to make - so far though, with its 504Wh battery and 24kg weight, I have to say the range isn't massively dissimilar to some of the numbers you mention in your vid. Lots of myths to be de-bunked for new eMTB riders so great to see a real world test - nice one.

Thanks, Rob, again, useful and informative. I'm certainly finding the internal battery to be sufficient - 26 miles/3500ft off-road and 10% battery remaining is typical. Might still opt for the Extender for those BIG days out... I tend to use lower settings and Boost is only 55NM, Trail 45 or so, Eco 35 or so in Profile 2 and Eco and Trail set lower for Profile 1.
Hey Rob! I just found your channel as I'm getting the bug for an E-bike once again. I must say that I really appreciate your attention to detail with your filming and editing. Great shots and great energy. Very well put together!
Great video Rob. By way of contrast my 2021 Whyte E-160 S has 1300 miles under its belt, I weigh 12st dead and last week on a mild day I rode 20.8 miles of Surrey Hills trails in the new Trail + mode with an indicated 27 miles remaining. This was a pretty pain-free experience and I’d say it’s a massive improvement over the old Trail mode.
65 kim's on my M10 doing undulating cross country track, most of it on trail, a bit of boost on pinch climbs and then 1/2 an hour in principally eco mode when range anxiety started to kick in. 100 + kg rider, turned EMTB support up a notice, maxed out the torque on Boost mode. Very happy with the power and range so far....typically getting 35-40 km's riding up and down jump lines.
This is brilliant review / lovely shots including the one in the late afternoon sun setting down with colorful foliage panorama. But - where the heck is this magnificent trial you're riding so joyfully? I am getting my M10 this Friday as the price is right for 2022 iterations now.
41.3 km and 2800 ft, or 850 meters. Today I rode my Rise M20 on similar, though generally a little rougher terrain. Burned through one-third of the battery and covered 16.6 km and 619 meters elevation gain. I weight less -- 55 kg -- but am older --67 -- and likely less fit. On an earlier ride of the same general area, I burned half the battery and got 20 km and 750 meters. So it looks like we're getting similar distance but my lighter weight is giving me considerably more elevation. Cheers Rob.
I just got an H15 with the 540 wh battery and i could ride it 3 times without a recharge and still had 40% of the battery left. Day 1 i rode 28 kms on a flat route with no elevation and on Eco mode; Day 2 just 11 kms but Climbed the same hill a few times and was riding with a group of full powered dudes and had to use the Boost mode all the time to keep up with them. Day 3 rode 26 kms mostly on trail mode. So a total of 65 kms and still had 40% left, this bike is great!
Interested to try the changes you made to the assist settings. I love mine but for normal weekend rides it's so efficient I can usually get away with using boost everywhere - 40km and over 800m elevation is possible on just the internal battery for me like this. Also, the state of your hands looks like a good advert for mtb glove companies!

I ran a similar test on my rocky mountain altitude powerplay. Using Trail mode set at 60% and ludicrous mode set at 100% the 632 wh battery delivered 76 km with 4% left on the battery this compares favourably with your test. Granted I have to carry the full weight of the bike whenever I use it so I don’t benefit from the weight saving of the bike tested here but I also have the advantage of up to 108 NM of torque whenever required.
Really cool video Rob. Looks like you´re enjoying the RISE. I love mine. It´s a pretty tough assist you used there if I understood, profile 2 with max torque which must be pretty close to profile 1 Boost? I´m your weight and use profile 1, generaly starting in ECO to warm up and then mixing up ECO and TRAIL depending on the trail. I find that I get between 1500 and 1700m of climbing, here distance is irrelevant as it´s steep both up and down! I got the impression that you are like me though, enjoying how the bike handles more than anything else. It´s just like a good trail bike on the way down!
@@ilidiofaria I'm not lightweight - about 78kg. Actually, it should be about 2100m with a distance about 51 km because the battery died before the end of the trip.
Rob, when do you think some standard will be made where motors can be swapped out for old ones? The thing putting me off an ebike is that in 3-4 years when I want to upgrade to a new motor or my old one breaks, the mounting standards have changed and I’m stuck with buying old new stock or second hand motors.
I've also boosted the eco and trail modes and can easily do 1500m over 40-50km of riding using trail for everything uphill and eco for the rest. Great bike and more than enough range
when it comes to Ebike range. there are just so many factors. im always shocked when i hear ppl with 500-800whr battery packs only getting 30-50kms of range. i suspect that people think they are more fit then they actually are. my 880whr pack nets me on average 150km of range. however i have gone as low as 70kms on 1 charge, but i also did 310km's on a charge once. the two biggest factors i would say are elevation gain / weight on that trip, and power mode. when i got only 70km's i was using around 500w with bursts of full power at 1,500w. while when i did the 310km ride i hardly ever used more then 150w
Hey Rob big thanks to your video in skye and rassay and torridon. I hooked up.with Chris from.H &I adventures and he took us to Applecross then onto torridon then rassay. Thanks to your video made me aware of the company. We rode the 50km loop.at torridon and was out of this world. By far the hardest challenge I've had on a emtb. climbing and decending. Thanks .there starting e bike tours in Scotland next year if you can help mention to the e bike community would be much appreciated help them kick this off 👍 Callum
Cannot decide between this and the Rail as a first ebike, Rob. Currently riding a YT Jeffsy, I don't know whether to go full fat and have the best of both with the Rail/Jeffsy combo, or take this as a more familiar/lightweight ride with the added umph from the motor. I'd love your thoughts if you'd be willing. Cheers, love the channel.
My longest ride was 38 miles 2300ft of climbing before it died a mile from my van . I’m well impressed, my range extender has just arrived so a great backup on those longer rides👍
Thanks for the effort and the very likeable video. In my opinion range can only be judged from the outside if you compare it to the ride on a bio bike. So if you got 42km with 2800m of elevation. How far would you come without the motor/battery? Half of it? So does the bike doubles your range?
So you have tested both Levo SL and Orbea Rise M10.. have you got a comparison for these 2? Pros and cons? What do u like best and least about them? Seems like Levo SL got lot more range than Rise M10? From most reviews I can see that Levo SL is more planted profile and Rise is poppy profile? And lastly, I have been riding my Levo SL with power off lots of time without problems and I am relatively fit. Will that be possible to do same with the Rise M10 you think? Will it harm the Shimano battery riding with power off??
Price aside, if comparing on the same spec, eg shimano xt build. Which would you recommend/prefer, Levo sl or Rise? or others like Forestal Siryon? As always, great video!
decent... I've got a canyon Neuron:ON 8 and covered over 1050 miles since March... i live in one of the highest places in England and each ride is typically around 30 miles, and about 20 miles now is in eco mode (EP8 motor) and trail mode to get me back up the hill... and normally have 2-3 bars left on the battery...and this is around 2000ft elevation too.. and my cadence is also around 85-90rpm, and the chain hasn't began to stretch yet as i measure it after each ride.... and I've only used boost mode a few times... the terrain i ride on is fields, woods, bridleways and fireroads, and a few bits of normal roads inbetween...
I tried the bike thinking the 60nm motor would be a big advantage over the Specialized SL motor and although it did give a bit more assist on the steepest bits and I'm 95kgs, I was surprised I preferred the feeling of the SL motor and the way it delivers the power and the lack of drag after 16mph. I thought it would be a good comprise to ride with full fat ebikes but it wasn't. I was not blown away with the bike either. I did fall off it which may have jaundiced my opinion a bit.
Cracking video Rob! Good work. Was wondering how you blend your Go Pro and drone footage so seemlessly, are you shooting flat and grading/using a LUT? My footage looks crap next to yours 😂
Great review, super impressed with my RISE and its range. Do you know if you can remove the internal battery and just run on the range extender like you did with the specialized levo SL.You could have an even lighter bike and more centrally placed battery weight
I have a 700watt hour battery Levo, but frankly that looks just as good and properly light. A very very good option, especially here in the Lake District where sometimes you do have to carry the bike.
@@CarkeekW Agreed on both points, but it is heavier over a gate. However I have just had the new 2021 motor put in my 2020 model bike as the old motor failed, the old motor was good, the new tune is fantastic + is noticeably more efficient on my test route. BTW if you haven't put the new Charge 2.1 damper in your forks, assuming you have the Lyrik, its amazing.
Excellent explanation of what the Rise is capable of. It's been 3 months since I got my Rise M20 and there are no words to describe these first 1500kms already done. Next step is to make it 160mm 160mm and ride it as much as I can. Its the perfect blend between a powerfull ebike and a regular all-mountain mtb.
@@joseazurara3245 I live next to Lisbon too. My M20 with the factory settings coal blue paintjob weighs 18.30kg the oc dropper post was 150mm, the size is M. Right now I have replaced the dropper post by a bew fox transfer kashima 150mm and the weight dropped a bit (not noticeable.) what will impact a lot on the bike will be for sure the maxxis DHR 2.4 exo max terra I'm about to place on the rear wheel as it will weight extra 250grs. Compared with the Rekon it had. Battery life will be for sure lower but I'm not sure how much lower will be. PS: I Didn't replace the OC dropper post because it was bad, I replaced it because the fox looks nicer and because i had another bike where I wanted to fit the OC dropper in.
@@CarlosAntunesMTB the best way to have more batt range and a more agile bike is to save weight in the Rim. A Rim 150g lihgter is less 300g in the bike and more inportant less rotation weight. But it depend of you weight, riding stile. But you have good carbon rims to handle everything.
I wonder what you would get with the 540 wh batter and then the range extender? I have the new Obrea Rise M20 with 360wh and was trying to find the 540 but none to be found by me. But I think with the Range extender and the 360wh, I would run out of gas before the 540 battery. LOL
I can confirm my h15 rise with my 90kgs of meat and gear on it will make 2000m up on the internal 540wh battery, 2200m if I really push myself /too hard/. That is really impressive. I stress I ride mainly in eco and only super tech/steep sections will be tackled in trail/boost. I think it rides closest to analog bike you can get. Rear hub died 200kms in.
I own the Orbea Gain (road e-bike) and I love Orbea's approach to e-bikes and assist. I really want the Rise. My one question is how does the bike handle with a dead battery. Does it feel like a normal bike? My only experience is hub motor style systems.
I have the M20 and I ride on the road to my local trails with the motor turned off. While the bikes feels slightly “heavy” I find it pedals just fine. The motor assist cuts out around 15 mph and I can keep the speed around 17mph so I’m not getting any assist anyway. It’s definitely slightly sluggish compared to my non electric Giant Trance but its nice to know if your battery dies and you’re away from home you’ll make it back.
So I have had a Whyte T130 and Orange 5 . Riding my Rise uphill with no assistance is like riding a downhill bike - it’s doable but tough . . It is absolutely fine on the flat and downhill . I keep my motor off at times just to keep my heart rate up and ensure I don’t lose my core fitness . I rarely run in boost and reserve that for gnarly climbs of steep chutes
So I’m looking to commute downs the canal 16 miles there 16 back probably Gona chip it to . I’m 220 lbs 100kg I ride a normal bike at about 12 -14 mph now due too lack of fitness and a dodgey heart valve this would be far to slow to come home as I finish work at 6 and have a young son I want to see before he goes to bed ,Couple of lads at work got specialzeds one a vado sl the other a Levo turbo . I like how the app can dial back the percentage In very small Increments . What I’d really like is something with 4” travel front and back with 60 n of y torque and a 5-600 watt hour battery . I did consider a gravel bike but it would rattle me to death plus my backs not the greatest. What would be your Recommendations ? That 220lb weight I’m hoping to drop to about 180 ish .
Hi Rob, As there is no wheight gain compared to the basic Shimano motor which has 80 NM of torque, can you explain why Orbea decided not letting the choice to tune the power according to user needs? Looks stupid to me.
I believe it is to do with the draw from the battery, not actually the ability of the motor to be used at full power. I'm not an electrical specialist so can't explain the reasons on a technical level. I don't believe you need anything more than the 60Nm and I have hardly used it in that mode, having Boost set at 55NM, Trail at about 45 and Eco at about 35 in Profile 2, with lower settings from Trail and Eco in Profile 1.
@@tonybrookes Tony, I live in South Alps and we often have to cope with very long, steep and technical climbs. 60 NM is definitively not enough in those circumstances.
@@smeyerse :-) Nope. Same as I love that a Lamborghini has a 6l v12 but in my Lotus Elise I don’t need it! What I mean is that the Rise in turbo mode climbs steep stuff effortlessly. With 60nm. Why? Because it’s lighter. And because you pedal it too. A full power ebike is much heavier and the motor works in a different cadence band. Plus it is a different experience. That’s my opinion. But what is fact is that the Rise doesn’t struggle on steep climbs with 60nm. With my guiding pack I’m 95kg. And the Basques tend to build trails steep!
Hey rob, nice review! Im looking for a second bike. I got already a bike with bosch gen4. But im looking into a light emtb, do you have an recommendation for me? Levo sl comp carbon or orbea rise? I prefer the levo, but i dont know if it fits my suits, because im not so trained. So are the 35nm of the levo enough? Thanks!
@@wannebiz im 6 foot 3 inch 220 lbs , i need power! My sister and brother in law have the regular levos. So i ride them too, we switch back and forth ,i can keep up with them no problem but on bigger hills i have to pedal more , get left bringing up the rear. But once up the hill i catch right back up so its fun
@@wannebiz when i bought this bike all others in my size were sold out , so glad i got it , i ride it all over the neighborhood and any trail i can find . But now after having this for 1300 mi if i bought another i would get the levo
they should fill those bikes up completely with batteries, why stop with bottom tube? top tube, seat tube, chainstays, seatsatays, handlebars, stuff them all full of batteries, so what if its gonna weigh 30kg, my car weighs 1.5 ton but its got a motor to pull it along so it feels like a feather to me, just push on the pedal and go, and the further you can go the more useful it is, the less you have to keep charging it
Hi mate. You mentioned the smart watch app or what ever which allows you to track battery percentage and the efficiency. Can you let me know what app/smart watch your using
Dragging up a 1 year old video here, but I'm looking at my first EMTB as I just don't have the motivation any longer to drag MTB's around.... The H30 with the 540W battery could be ideal! I'm not interested in chucking myself off jumps and drops, I just want to enjoy XC and fast trail riding without the drudge... 35 miles and 3000ft would be plenty of range and I guess the 540w could just about do that? Is it the ideal in-between trail bike?
hi what size Orbea were you riding? im thinking of getting the new rise h30 but trying to decide what size to get. I currently ride a large YT Capra and im around 5ft10-11, long arms and legs. im swaying more towards the large as all bikes I've rode have been large and never rode an e-bike before. cheers.
This bike is al about lighweight, and thus, little range. Several bikes has over 700wh of battery, you need to work hard to run a battey like that down. Coummuting, my 630wh battery gave me over 120km range. Some brands run an internal belt, and has just about no resistance pedaling with the bike turned off.
Why do you mix metric and imperial units? Kilometer in the distance and feet in the elevation. I suggest stick to a single unit system for all the data.
hey im thinking about buying this bike, thank you for the video. One Question to you, was easy to ride without engine? How does the bike feel when you turn the engine off? thanks :)

What average speed do you have after such a ride?
when it comes to Ebike range. there are just so many factors. im always shocked when i hear ppl with 500-800whr battery packs only getting 30-50kms of range. i suspect that people think they are more fit then they actually are.
my 880whr pack nets me on average 150km of range. however i have gone as low as 70kms on 1 charge, but i also did 310km's on a charge once.
the two biggest factors i would say are elevation gain / weight on that trip, and power mode. when i got only 70km's i was using around 500w with bursts of full power at 1,500w. while when i did the 310km ride i hardly ever used more then 150w
Hi, Rob - Love the Rise. Can you share what make/model glasses you’re wearing in the video?
Those drone shots are CRAZY!!! Whatever drone you are using, it’s worth every dollar….ummm every pound.
Another epic review. Thanks
road an specialized levo in the parking lot once and it was the coolest thing i have tried sense a i tried a fuel suspension
Great video rob 👌
Great video cheers Rob 🙏🤝👍
Brilliant vlog buddy, would love the orbea rise but a bit out of my price range! These ebikes ain't getting any cheaper.
My longest ride was 38 miles 2300ft of climbing before it died a mile from my van . I’m well impressed, my range extender has just arrived so a great backup on those longer rides👍
Wow ,how much do you weigh?
@@ianmangham4570 64kg
As always, great video!
im curious if you do all flat country trail riding how long will it last ?
Nice videos rob thanks, what’s your thoughts compared with this and the SL
Nice review, what was your moving time and average power during ride?
I have a 700watt hour battery Levo, but frankly that looks just as good and properly light. A very very good option, especially here in the Lake District where sometimes you do have to carry the bike.
the levo is 2x as powerful and rides just as far , depends what your goal is
@@CarkeekW Agreed on both points, but it is heavier over a gate.
Those trails look familiar 🤙🏻🔋⚡️
Baby maker bar twist 🔥
Excellent explanation of what the Rise is capable of. It's been 3 months since I got my Rise M20 and there are no words to describe these first 1500kms already done. Next step is to make it 160mm 160mm and ride it as much as I can. Its the perfect blend between a powerfull ebike and a regular all-mountain mtb.

Compared with the Rekon it had. Battery life will be for sure lower but I'm not sure how much lower will be.
Nice rob.. Thx. Ride on 🙏
Nice video, great work thank-you. I wonder if you could share what type of drone you use. Thanks again
That looks like a great route Rob! Any chance you can share this?
I wonder what you would get with the 540 wh batter and then the range extender? I have the new Obrea Rise M20 with 360wh and was trying to find the 540 but none to be found by me. But I think with the Range extender and the 360wh, I would run out of gas before the 540 battery. LOL
Those numbers are astounding.
Amazing video man! Really appreciate your work, great quality.
Very informative video! And great footage also! Seriously looking at purchasing one.
What’s it like riding once the battery has died?
excellent top quailty review
That skydio drone is so accurate, wheres our Jon bike pilot?
Cool yeah fresh out of the box, but how's that battery holding up 4 years down the line? Still available? Such a sketchy market.
Extender 800hm with eco n trail. Internal 1000hm. 40km ca. At 95 kg eco and trail mix. Superb
This is a suuuper popular bike this summer
My last ride was 17 miles- 3K climbing, using 60% battery in Profile 1 with eco and trail +1 from default
Hi Rob
where are you riding ? Looks great
I own the Orbea Gain (road e-bike) and I love Orbea's approach to e-bikes and assist.
Great video! But we we just choose stop w the km stuff? It’s miles. And feet. 😅
As usual great video composition and content Rob! How do you find the handling and ride characteristics when using the range extender?
Very impressive bike and range.
I wonder how much difference the 25kphupper limit for UK bikes compares to 32 that we have in NZ... must have an effect eh?
Hi Rob,
As there is no wheight gain compared to the basic Shimano motor which has 80 NM of torque, can you explain why Orbea decided not letting the choice to tune the power according to user needs?
@@smeyerse it definitely is :-) We live in the Pyrenees and it´s typically steeper on the climbs, plus I´m heavy, and it´s more than enough.
@@basqueMTB OK so Brose, Shimano and Bosch manufacturers are all dum keeping on producing 85/90 NM motors...
Beautiful locations.
Thanks!
I've had my levo sl for a year now and it's been great but I wish it had 60 nm of torque, that's the only thing I would change
@@jimbo4203 can you explain in detail why 60nm?

they should fill those bikes up completely with batteries, why stop with bottom tube? top tube, seat tube, chainstays, seatsatays, handlebars, stuff them all full of batteries, so what if its gonna weigh 30kg, my car weighs 1.5 ton but its got a motor to pull it along so it feels like a feather to me, just push on the pedal and go, and the further you can go the more useful it is, the less you have to keep charging it
Hi mate. You mentioned the smart watch app or what ever which allows you to track battery percentage and the efficiency. Can you let me know what app/smart watch your using
Sure - Garmin Fenix 6 👍
hey great video wich size is it?
Dragging up a 1 year old video here, but I'm looking at my first EMTB as I just don't have the motivation any longer to drag MTB's around.... The H30 with the 540W battery could be ideal! I'm not interested in chucking myself off jumps and drops, I just want to enjoy XC and fast trail riding without the drudge... 35 miles and 3000ft would be plenty of range and I guess the 540w could just about do that? Is it the ideal in-between trail bike?
After renting an H30, I would say yes!
Bit late, bought one the last day of Aug 2022 and love it!@@pmaly9473

hi what size Orbea were you riding? im thinking of getting the new rise h30 but trying to decide what size to get. I currently ride a large YT Capra and im around 5ft10-11, long arms and legs. im swaying more towards the large as all bikes I've rode have been large and never rode an e-bike before. cheers.
What’s it like to ride without the motor on and no battery or flat battery, and how much is the range extender ?
I saw in a FB post that Rise don't work if we put the extender with the main at 0 whats. But as you show us it is not true thanks.
It would be nice to see how far it could be tiden on a flat battery from the start.
It's the limiting range that still puts me off getting an e bike.
Hi Rob, could you pls let us know how heavy the range extender is?
Why do you mix metric and imperial units? Kilometer in the distance and feet in the elevation. I suggest stick to a single unit system for all the data.
whats it like with the motor turned off is it ok to ride
what size is the bike and what is your height? I'm buying one soon and I'm stuck between sizes. THANKS!!!
hey im thinking about buying this bike, thank you for the video. One Question to you, was easy to ride without engine? How does the bike feel when you turn the engine off? thanks :)
Is there a way to use the rang extender first? Then Stash it trailside and pick it up on the way back?
Yes. It automatically does this.
now that it's dead, can i have it ?
