  • Clint Lorance had been in charge of his platoon for only three days when he ordered his men to engage three Afghans stopped on a dirt road. A conviction and pardon followed. Today, Lorance is hailed as a hero by President Trump and conservative media. His troops are still haunted by his crimes. Read more: wapo.st/3gfAKBe. @@haloguy628 As someone who once commanded a platoon I can tell you that the 'questionable character' appears to be Lorance. From the moment he assumed command he proved himself tactically incompetent, with no grip on reality or common sense. He also did not seem to have the capacity to listen to his NCO's or factor their experience and knowledge into his planning. That's a dangerous trait in a junior officer and coupled with everything else was a recipe for disaster. Regardless of the life choices those platoon members made once they ETSd it's clear they were performing well and had a professional, workable understanding of what was required to counter insurgents prior to Lorance being inflicted on them. The only thing I'd say in his defense is that he should never have been placed in that role in the first place. Once he was there he should have been very closely monitored higher up the chain and this clearly didn't happen. The first time he ordered his troops to fire at civilians for no discernible reason should have seen him immediately fired from that role.

The military sand that brotherhood crap is all a show. It’s more like a fraternity. There are no current wars, so everyone is quick to denounce each other and knock the other down for promotions at any cost. That’s the real American military. This isn’t saving private. Yea there are a few platoons that get along usually in Afghanistan or high combat zones, but they are far and few in between. That’s the problem with having a standing army during peacetime. But it is what it is. If there is no fighting, then of course officers are going to play favorites. There’s no real repercussion to pick the best soldiers because there is no real war.

It is a very complicated situation, which must be dealt with very carefully. We were fortunate enough to have a solid CO, and most importantly, lucky enough to have time to deal with the situation before anything too bad happened. I feel very bad for all of these soldiers (aside from the Lt.) They should be proud of their service, and the actions they took to correct the situation. My 2 cents.

It does not really matter in my opinion, but I don't have all of the facts, but I'm going to give my experience anyways. I spent multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan and I too was 82nd Airborne before becoming a Green Beret in Group 3. It is true that the Taliban and Haqqani Network (enemy) heavily use and rely on motorcycles. Of course so do innocent people, it's a poor country and cars are more expensive on average. However there were intelligence briefings that the Taliban and Haqqani Network were using motorcycles and that many if not most on motorcycles could be enemy. These intelligence reports were frequent and is was a well known and understood fact that you wanted to pay extra close attention to these motorbikes and more importantly their riders. What most Americans do not understand is that rural Afghan men carry weapons, usually rifles (AK-47, 74,... whatever!) It's not like they wear uniforms as we are required to, so identifying the enemy is extremely difficult. Just as there are many people who legally own and use firearms in the USA, many own and rightfully use firearms in Afghanistan. However due to the fact that the enemy and civilians are indistinguishable it makes for a ridiculously scary scenario. That's on top of having in the back of your mind that every step you take, every foot you drive in vehicle could your last in Afghanistan, thanks to the enemy's number one killer, IED's. Rules of engagement often require some sort of overt act of violence used upon us before we can respond with equal or greater violence of action. So all these above factors give the enemy enormous advantage, they can blend into the local populations, they can carry firearms and they usually choose the time and place of attack or ambush. Often they do all of the above at the same time, which makes for an even more dangerous situation. So I was there (In Afghanistan) in the years before this Platoon and there was a reason why these intelligence reports were so widely distributed, many US soldiers were wounded or killed because the enemy could blend in. They would use these motorbikes like they were the poor version of the Hells Angels lol, except and again, they don't wear a vest or patches, uniforms, etc. So very, very long and complicated story is this particular 1st Lt., probably shouldn't have been given the position he was, but it's war and he was asked to replace the previous Lt., who had died. He was put into a difficult situation and with little to absolutely no actual (battle) combat experience, he's thrust into a tough spot (literally and figuratively). He's now leading men he barely knows, whom he knows don't trust or really like him, are borderline insubordinate and he's scared! He's been reading these intel reports that have influenced his decision making process, etc. So taking all of that into account he see's three scary looking (Taliban looking dudes) riding a motorcycle towards his men. It's far off in the distance but close enough to see its a possible threat, take that back, definite threat in his mind. I'm not here to defend the man as I wasn't there, but I think the media has done a terrible job of properly explaining the situation or story. All they focus on is the bent out of shape soldiers who in reality told or turned in him, to protect themselves. They were trying to save their own asses and avoid punishment, dishonorable discharge, criminal charges, etc. Granted he (Lt. Lorance) gave the commands and should have waited a second longer or two, then fired warning shots, etc. The story does not add up and I agree Lt. Lorance probably acted out of unnecessary fear, lack of experience, training, etc. However I do not agree with the media's narrative or that Lt. Lorance should have been given the punishment he received. It is war and it is scary regardless, he had previously worked in an intelligence gathering capacity/FOB, where he had read about the threat of motorbike riders often being the enemy, or rather that the enemy was heavily using motorbikes to travel and transport personel and weapons, etc. So he of course wants to protect his men at all costs and war isn't pretty, you do whatever you have to so that you can go home, your brother's next to you can go home and you do whatever it takes to make that happen. For as long as war has existed, which is pretty much since the beginning of time, it's either you or them, in this case it's the same, Lt. Lorance felt at that moment that he needed to act to protect his men and he did what he thought was justifiable. Of course we all know in the end he made a terrible mistake and it cost innocent people their live's, but anyone whom has not fought on the front lines of war, don't comment or do stories on something you know nothing about. All of those commenting who've never served or fought in actual combat theater, think twice, because you really don't know what it's like. For as long as fighting has existed, people have been put in the position of me or them, us or them, etc. Not saying it's always right to do whatever or anything to stay alive and or "win," what I'm saying is you are in a position of great responsibility and the outcome is life or death. Or a leader, someone whom has to watch over and command those beneath them, this burden is twice what it is for those taking the order's and it's incredible what that can do to mentally influence your decision making.

Native 92 not only did they not back him up, they are the ones who described the actions taken that day and wrote the statements that were turned in to the higher ups for the review of his behavior. So not only did they just sit there snd nit back him up, they are the ones responsible for him going to court and ultimately thrown in prison. That speaks volumes and imo is basically as good as gospel. There is no doubt in my mind that this man is guilty of war crimes and had a piss poor attitude, he went into that platoon with a sense of grandeur trying to prove something to those guys and went about it in the absolute worst way possible. I dont know how anyone in their right mind could possibly think that this one man was the one telling the truth when his entire platoon says he is lying. Smh.

I can tell it was bad when he started off the story saying the Commanding Officer ordered to go to house to house kicking down doors and beating Innocent Afgan civilians for no reason. He said seeing the dead children hunting him every night and would drink liquor until he would pass out. Thinking back now I remember thinking to myself at the time that this guy didn’t even look like a war killer but now watching this video and seeing how young these guys were in the Platoon I feel like the Commanding officer took advantage of these young men.

They are everything a soldier should be. They had the professionalism and courage to attempt to achieve success in their own AO. Then they had the courage and integrity, as enlisted men, to speak the truth about an officer who had committed a crime. I don't think those who have never served can understand the balls it takes for enlisted men to do this, particularly when it involves calling out the unlawful behavior of a commissioned officer. Because they want to. It's called patriotism. Except their version of patriotism has nothing to do with right and wrong. The way to control Americans is to accuse those who speak up as being un-patriotic, un-American (whatever that means). To make that really powerful you first institute the myth of America's goodness, bringing freedom to oppressed peoples. Nothing could be further than the truth. The American dream is the same as American foreign policy, it's all about money and resources and unbridled avarice. It's a hollow victory, an empty philosophy, empty loveless lives. How very foolish. Not that there aren't good Americans, of course there are. Many.

@Brianna Daniels Yes, in a sense it is. Don’t say it isn’t. The depth and credibility of your argument is negligible.

One of the joes in this platoon became my PL. By far the best PL that I will ever have in my career. Still to this day I call him as often as I can.
