Private militaries have existed since the dawn of warfare, it’s just that they saw limited use in the late 19th through the 20th century. Before that, it was quite common to have entire armies composed of mercenaries instead of conscripted soldiers.
Yeah, most of European warfare especially in the late medieval era was mercenaries. Standing armies weren't really a thing till centralization came around
private armies became temporarily obsolete during the French revolution as leve en masse meant you could have 400k conscripts and by sheer numbers beat a typical 40k merc army, and it stayed like that until the end of WW2
Yup but the rise of profesional armies cut down their use dramatically. As Dubious Derr says, Mercenaries never end up well. Carthaginians got fucked up by their own Mercs, Rome ended up being taken over by barbarian mercs...ah the list is long I CBA

PMCs won't "takeover" for one simple reason. War is expensive. The US government alone is saddled with trillions in debt just from the wars of the least ten years. No PMC could maintain that kind of spending because, unlike the government, they actually have to worry about making a profit. The only reason why the US has gotten away with it for as long as it has is because it has access to a printing press. Even so, that won't last forever. The money will become worthless and the whole system will cave in.
Exactly. PMCs don't have the power or resources to take over and maintain that power. PMCs and other revolutionary organizations focused on attaining power eventually evolve into the governments we have today anyway. PMCs are like monarchies. Both monarchies and governments share in common their lust for power, but the former is premature, aristocratic, and violent, while the latter is mature, democratic, and more ethical (despite what people say about the lack of ethics in politics and government in modern U.S. times, what we have today is a helluva lot better than the monarchies that existed in the past). It's the natural evolution of society for less powerful groups to attain more and more power until it eventually becomes a government. Another way to look at governments is to think of them as highly evolved and structured PMCs. Therefore, to suggest that a PMC can jump the societal evolution timeline and immediately become more powerful and resourceful than a government is simply absurd. The system will cave in, but in order to survive, the U.S. must decentralize and evolve into a society that is less focused on war, bureaucracy, and politics. We will either evolve into a more prosperous and peaceful society, or we will fall back in the evolutionary cycle and become a more primitive, fraudulent, and violent society than what exists today. Who knows what the future holds. In the long run, everything will be alright, but in the short run, things may get ugly.
What you both need to know is, whoever has the money gets the armies...if let's say china wants to attack US or any other country they could hire PMC's to extend the already big army...that wouldn't necessary mean they go under chinese government, US did this in Iraq so why wouldn't anyone else be able to...
gbmack2000 plus PMCs are ment to supplement and existing armies operational capacity in tasks they dont have the manpower of logistics to do,not fight them and take over a country which alot of misinformed people believe...especially vice news..."super-power for hire"? what a load of crap
***** The scariest thing to me about it is, say a corporation owns a lot of oil reserves in a foreign nation, and that nation decides to nationalize the oil industry, the corporation could potentially use a PMC to overthrow that government and back a more neoliberal regime, while silencing dissent. Governments have done this frequently, but they are held accountable, especially democratic ones, and as the case in Portugal, people will even overthrow their government based on wars in other nations, but corporations aren't accountable like governments are (to an extent), and corporation can't just be overthrown so easily, nor are the vast majority democratic in the slightest bit.
That wouldn't be fun. The storyline would be: The game would be for 5 minutes because the Contractor only hired when they are in the safezone. They ever experienced the unknown territory like our servicemen do. It's like the US enter the war when German already losing and claim the victory.
tnt ntn If you have nothing creative to say then you should probably just not say anything at all. PMCs would do a better job at fighting terror then the government would if the government would let them. They get way better training the government soldiers do

Nah that's ViceLAND not Vice.
I think the call of duty ads kind of undercut the serious tone of the piece.
Oh, don't worry about our mercs...they trained in call of duty.
Call of duty had an entire game 4 years ago based on private military's trying to take over the world. Kevin Spacy was in it
@Predator Yeah that's why the ad was at the end of the video because the game came out around the time the video was released
Actually - I think it fits the tone rather well. It was surreal for sure but I, for example, would argue that the same people who watch this kind of stuff ( like myself ) are also often but not always the people who would consider a purchase of such a game.
@@Arcaryon Yeah most certainly. It was a smart move on their part also to include the ad because they most likely knew their target demographic. Also, I do think it almost added to the experience, if you are someone who has played that game before or at the very least knows what it is about it invokes a kind of satirical dread seeing something that literally happened in a call of duty game going on in the real world.

@@mariobarcelon3247 lmao quoting mass effect as if it's a poignant quote
Honor is magnificent. However, the word has been perverted and contorted and means nothing when used by the military now. It is a word used to manipulate morale. The US government will preach honor and duty all day, if it means our children will throw themselves into battle..

Private Military is a more glamorous name for Mercenaries. Mercenaries have been around since the days of Ancient Greeks
When someone thinks of "mercenary" they often think of a single dude fighting for cash or a small group, not a a large organized business with contracts like these I suppose. Thus, a privatized military.
Ancient greeks? that's not that old, mercenaries were around since the golden age of Egypt and Mesopotamia and probably since the beginning of human civilization.
It's probably as old as prostitution.
Muchhh earlier

Geraldine C lol fr
Yeah I caught that too lol
I don’t know how they got that wrong
Maybe it's a metaphor as you could see the neighborhood as a "deadly barrier"
Barrio has negative connotations behind it, it's more of a "Hood" than a neighborhood
I think its normal even before the Roman Empire mercenaries are quite common , we had just looped back
the Roman Empire employed the most mercs before its downfall
difference is Mercs are technically illegal, not to mention if you identify yourself as one you basically lose all international rights.

Let’s be real and just call them mercenaries
Clorox Bleach not the same thing at all.
Chlorox Bleach they are..
yep, they're mercenaries. From Wikipedia, "A mercenary is an individual who is hired to take part in an armed conflict but is not part of a regular army or other governmental military force. Mercenaries fight for money or other recompense rather than for political interests."
Doesnt matter what you call us rug rat! We get the Fuckin job done! 738 Ghost Unit ! Dawgs of War!
Whats wrong with being a mercenary
I don't know why people are acting like this shit is new. Mercenaries have been around since before the Romans.
+Denis Tuohy People aren't, just how much they've blown up in recent years.
+Denis Tuohy Yea, its the fact that military contractors are actually taking a leading role in military engagements around the world for the first time in modern warfare. Of course mercenaries have been around for millennium...
+Denis Tuohy But thing is, they were not used against American citizens before! Blackwater has been, at Katrina.
+Robert Maybeth The US gov't made it possible for Blackwater to act over in Iraq then turned on them and politicians took to grandstanding on the issue.....which is why the owner now operates in UAE. But the threats are real and gov'ts cannot always deal with them.
This aged really well with the whole 'Wagner' thing...
11:59 ARE YOU KIDING ME? maybe if your so 'worried' about PMCs you should pay your OWN PEOPLE a reasonable wage so they don't have to turn to PMCs to get compensated properly. Typical politicians. Never fighting the problem at it's core.
Soldiers from all countries, religions are paid for shit we all know that but the Gouvernement is too busy making speed bump & killing the ecosystem than paying the ones that's protect there asses, look soccers players by example a great joke.
Maybe if the Government stopped focusing on shit like all these SJW movements and focused our military budget on paying the soldiers rather than creating a new fucking branch we wouldn’t need PMC’s as much. But until then PMC’s are needed.
+Rock Lobster The huge difference thou, is that the Government pays it's soldiers in times of peace too, so you can be a soldier for your entire life, and not see the battlefield once, and still be paid a generous wage, and retirement. On the other hand, PCM's are dependant on wars and conflicts and pays you to fight.
If you join the military for money reasons you aren't joining for the right reasons. This isn't a regular job like most others, it's a line of work where you have to put the comfort of normal life aside for something greater and accept the much higher probability of death if you get send to combat; at least that's how it's suppose to be.
People talk about this as if wars and violence has ever been morally okay. It's war and violence, there's nothing pretty with it, and expecting either private contractors or state military to live up to some imaginary standard and getting well paid for it as well when they operate in shitholes is telling how far away normal civilians are from reality.
@@gergi2000 good one, waited for it. EFT.

This reminds me of one of the reasons Rome fell, they kept hiring mercenaries and the mercenaries weren't loyal to Rome, they were just loyal to money.
Something similar happened to the Persians
That wasn't at all why Rome fell, they fell from corruption from within.
These mercenaries aren't working for the state. They're working for the private international corporations. The days of state being the king of nations is long gone. Corporations runs the game.
.....A lot of those PMC's are vets. In fact almost all of them are. Most of them just wanted more money or to be treated better.
Rome hired foreign mercenaries. The mercs America hires are rarely foreign.

Exactly, the u.s. created ISIS because they wanted to destroy al Assad's government.
Mathias Guilliams no they weren’t.... Most of ISIS are men that fight because they have been threatened with death either to themselves or their families. You absolutely have no clue
