i have the bolt thing done on my vw and it makes it super easy i replace my alternator in one afternoon and it was my fist time highly recommend doing that to your case.
for easiest removal with studs still in place, take apart the generator from behind the pulley, and the generator case will slide right out and then there is clearance for the stand to lift up and then the generator guts slide out with fan blades. then you can remove studs and replace with bolts to re-install generator/fan as one unit, or take apart the new one and install in pieces.
OK In the process now of removing my gen for replacement. I know you like to go stock as much as possible 6d4vdub gives a walk though and suggests removing the Carb (he tapes over it to prevent dirt etc. from falling in) and removes the dist cap then holding shaft still w/ screwdriver in pully slot he breaks the fan nut loose and removes that and the washers/shims, then comes the clamp @oil filler spout/ gen. mount finally the four shroud plate? screws. Chris thnx for all your Videos.
I agree that pulling the engine is so much easier.30 minutes tops for a stock engine.Plus you can check your clutch and end play while its out.Nice idea though, especially if you have dual carbs and no manifold in the way.
thank you so so so so so much, all i want to do is get to the bottom brush easier and I was wondering what was so hard about taking the generator out but i didn't know the bolt would hinder it from being raised high enough to easily remove it. you saved me hours of trying JUST to install the bottom brush. BTW any good tip for replacing brushes?
Hey Chris, i want to change my 64 bug to a 12V system, will newer parts like from a 68 beetle work on my car, like a generator and all the other parts i need to change
Take off carb. Take the bolts off that hold the fan shroud. Remove the generator stand. If you raise the fan shroud up you can clear the manifold. You should be able to do this without removing the deck lid.
to remove a generator on the1600 DP engine, do you have to remove the intake manifold first?...can the fan shroud be taken out with the engine in the car?
@brighteyefilms basically because 1 i can get a jump start from another car if i ever get stuck somewhere. 2, i can get lights WAY easier, cause i pretty much have to buy light bulbs online cause nowhere eles has them, and 3, i can have a modern stereo in the car, But know i'm just thinking about swapping out engines entierly to a 68 or something like that, cause then i have a bigger engine and i don't need to change out everything on it.
@brighteyefilms But it would work for my to get a generator and stand from a 68 bug and put it in? and i've heard that you can use a 6V starter even if you have a 12V car for quite some time, and isn't very hard to fit a 12V starter cause you need to file a bunch of stuff down and what not to make it fit?
I have a question for anyone who might know, but where does the small wire on top of the generator plug into? I just got a sandrail with a 1500 vw engine in it and some of the wires are not hooked up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hey I have a question about valve covers, just recently had my long block rebuilt, valve covers didn't leak before at all, 2 weeks later they start leaking so I stretched the springs and replaced covers with original German ones ,also used cork gasket and gasket cinch seal on the cover side with no luck at all, they still leak, do you recommend bolt on covers? Like your videos a lot thanks
I have ?got this motor doesn't have the numbers under the generator but is next to the distributor at the case seam letters are uo to me this makes it a type 3 but looks just like a type 1 1600
I had a garage replace my generator this week. They charged like 250.00 which I thought was really expensive but maybe it wasnt if he had to pull the motor.....

Pull the decklid off. Then you can pull the whole fan shroud up and out with the gen attached. An hour job.
You are correct, sir…! I just had this done exactly the same way….👍🏻

Tnx man, that was helpful! Greetings from Eastern Cape (South Africa)

I did it in less than 2hres even with the cooling box removed.....so easy

Don't forget to replace the generator stand/casing gasket. This is also your oil filler inlet too, and you don't want it to leak either.

If the motor is out, can you undo the nut on the fan? Is it reverse thread or just really tight?
Yes, normal thread, could be real tight.
@@classicvwbugs Impossible to undo in my case! I took the whole assembly off with the fan housing... I didn't want to risk shearing the shaft.
I just did mine the other day. I have a 1970 beetle 1600 single port. Its a PITA anyway u do it. Took me 2 hours.

@brighteyefilms thanks ,mate..i have a AS41 case..and now im using a 1285cc..engine num has been erase n reprinted..in malaysia it illegal..
So the 1600 engine mates to that old transaxle?

Did you try some permatex?
@@classicvwbugs I have the yellow permatex, but the garage that did the rebuild didn't recommended, they preferred gasket cinch
@@MarioMartinez-ff5ph we have put two gaskets on before, sometimes that helps. But usually that helps when you have aftermarket valve covers on.
@@classicvwbugs what are your opinions on bolt on covers , I know there mainly for off road, but do they seal better than stock, thanks
@@MarioMartinez-ff5ph I've never used them.
is that the original vw engine num print?

How about just using a flat head screwdriver to lock the generator pulley and loosening the fan nut since your replacing the gen. anyways.
Its says "how to." There was no demonstartion, just talk
Not a bad tip at all
You wasted my time :-( You do not explain how to do this at all??
yeah and it was FREE! Keep watching my channel.
