    Fixing vintage VW'S is more about learning how they work and troubleshooting problems. If I just wanted to yank out all the old stuff, shitcan it and bolt in some new gear, I'll go get a Honda.

    Half the video confusing viewers and himself about how to check the generator even though the video is about switching to an alternator.

    Thanks for sharing. The other guys apparently got it. I’m a little more dense. If you do another video, do a script too. And get a camera person to help. You tended to wander, both with the camera, and with your comments. Sorry.

    Switching over is easy. Forgot two things if you do. Fuel pump maybe too tall, they have ones for alternator bugs. Also you need to raise up the carburetor to make room for alternator. There is a spacer for the intake that does that.

    My rail bug has a generator and it has the charging light that suppose to come on if not charging. I have an issue where my battery runs down just enough not to start but runs fine. I just unhooked the D+,DF and the ground then ran a wire from the hot on battery and when I touch it to the D+ it sparks pretty good so if I'm understanding you correctly then it's got an internal issue. I believe that's the issue because I know the regulator is good and the battery takes good charge from my pickup so that only leaves the generator. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Thanks.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  Год назад +1

      Yes probably internal. somewhere inside there it is grounding out. I find lots of these with that issue. Best to just upgrade to the alternator kit and be done. Cheaper and better. even though it is made in China.

      Same here, my rail battery kept dying. It’s to the point I charge it overnight and disconnect it between rides. Changed the regulator. Tested the generator and it’s putting out. Wanted to wire it directly but looks like I’ll be upgrading to N alternator

    Look like my battery is not be charging I also seen some generator with the 2 cables connected to the regulator and also one ground wire that goes on the far back of the generator how important is to ground that way ? That could be my problem I see some are connected from generator to the regulator

    if you connect generator terminal to power, directly, it's tend to working like electric motor. mechanical regulator also is a switch, that disconnect power to generator.

    I stumbled upon your youtube site, and I was hoping you could answer a simple question for me. I ordered a new voltage regulator cable for my 1971 volkswagen beetle, but the end that connects to the + battery terminal has a "O" ring connection on the end of it that is too small to fit over the top of the + terminal battery post. How can I connect it to the positive battery terminal post?

    • @mariusa9263
      @mariusa9263 2 года назад +1

      Replace the O ring or clip it off and wrap around!

  • @blackfoot5527
    @blackfoot5527 2 года назад +2

    D+ is the current of the battery, df is ground but from df to the alternator housing and then to the negative of the battery, otherwise it will not work, and the 2 cables always spark why I have no explanation for this

    I should mount a vw generator on a board with a voltage regulator, put a rubber lawn mower wheel where the pulley was, then do a simple friction drive off my stationary bike wheel to turn the generator shaft. Then I'll connect the VR to my emergency auto battery bank connected to my inverter. That way I can get exercise, charge my batteries, and watch Mike Fn Garage all at the same time!

    • @Mikefngarage

      I dont have the part number but it is the one for the later model. I think it will ask if it has a internal or exteral regulator ask for the internal. use like a 75 or later. Look at the top and see that is is the same with one positive wire and one for the idiot light.

    How many amps you need for alternator 50-60-75 what when replacing generator,

    • @mariusa9263
      @mariusa9263 2 года назад +1

      Depends how much stuff you are plugging into it. I ordered a 60AMP i run headlights + radio.
      If you have more consider getting a bigger one.
      How much are you drawing out of your system v. how much do you want to recharge.

    it culd turn engine on with just generator with a proper capacitor/supresor depending what coil polarity your runing on your grounding side clasic magneto ignition thats right you dont need realy a coil to make the same thing hapening only diference you need 2 capacitors for low speed and high speed with diferent values you culd use in fact that generator as a starter motor in imergency situations ore as a compromised ignition system ore bouth and that by bypassing regulator so he has a point there at their times those were hybrid engines and they were even electric cars if moded corectly those are universal engines they run on any thing from charcoal gas methane ore ethanol probably even on acids thats a good choise for a engine another one who does the same thing are sohv and sohc engines they are preaty much unique

      @geepea101able 2 года назад +2

      @@Mikefngarage Don't want to spoil your channel but your wrong when saying you shouldn't have a spark at the D+ terminal. You will always have current draw at that point .It goes directly to the armature thru one brush and straight to body on the other. You will always have a spark there, whether the motor is running or not. It wont start generating until the DF is grounded and engine speed above idle.

  • @ottobauner9828
    @ottobauner9828 2 месяца назад

    Ok ill start with i been arou d VW my entire life. Ive found that people dont understand how to work on them becUse they are so simple its confusing. There is no need to switch from a generator to an alternator generator are just as reliable. Now to you statement that the voltage regulators are cheap and poormy made and rarely right being your make reason to sugesst conversion to an alternator. This is because society has lost the knowledge a d understanding of how to properly install a coltage regulator. Yeah they are cheap. That was the exact reason they were originaly used to be cheap reliable transportation that can be easily and cheap to repair.. All voltage regulator are bought needing to be set and adjusted to the proper setting. Inside the revulator there are to relauly coils 1 is a shorting relay the other is the cutout relay. The firts this you do is locat the point like in your distributor lightly sand them to remove any residue and set the point. The shortin relay just sends a regerence viltage tonthe generator to get it statted making power. The 2nd as cuerent is created the s
    Spark from the points chargebthe coil pulling it open as ciltage increases. Once iit reaches the set voltage they no longer conect curring the current as coltage lowers they be come closer increaeing the flow. If your voltage is too low the gap needs to be decreased if its to high it the gap increased
