With generator to check if working just take belt off and turn key on and fan should turn backwards if working properly. Alternator is different, all the DC voltage will do is forward bias the diodes so Alternator can start charging after engine starts . Diodes are the rectifier to change the AC to DC from Alternator. Alternators are used because they're more efficient at charging especially at idle.
Mine used to work when I bought it, now I gotta dig in and find why its not going on, always something with these, gotta a big cruise coming and dont want over heat it!

LOL, Yes I am an idiot, I put one of those temp sensors that fit in the oil dipstick tube and this light (LEFT) came on and I thought it was the temperature, as I was taking the 67 bus up a LONG hill...engine was HOT....so it all seemed right...and I stopped and waited an hour, it cooled down, but the light was lit and I limped it home, the fan belt was secure...the light on the RIGHT is for oil pressure then ? D'OHH...
I’ve been having a problem with my oil light flickering at idle speed after a 20 minutes ride on the expressway, I changed the oil censor and it still doing it, any thoughts or advise.thank you!
check your engine end play. if it is loose your engine needs a rebuild.

Help! The only light that comes on is the turn signal bulb when ignition is on. No oil light or alt light just center turn signal indicator bulb.
What year is your bug? My looks pretty much identical- even the colour.
I have a 67 squareback when I turn the key only the generator light comes on the yellow light doesn’t come on. What would the yellow light indicate and why would it not be on when I turn the key Any help would be great

need to have one if your running an alternator just put a bulb on the dash area. RPM Oil gauge and Alt Light.

I just recently changed my alternator. After 20 years of use it finally died. I replaced with another new Bosch alternator but now my "idiot light" comes on at an idle. I checked voltage at the alternator and the meter said 13 at an idle and 15 max. Should i be worried about the idiot light coming on at idle?
I have this same issue in my 1776 . After it runs for awhile the light eventually comes in and stays on. Have you found anything out yet why?
@@aaronsanxiety3571 -full on or just a dim light? Mine is dim at idle and goes out when the RPMs go up. If i were you i'd just test it with a multi meter when the light is on and make sure it's charging. If it is, run it. If it really bothers you i'd get a voltage gauge. Mine's charging, that's all i know. Not sure why the light is dim at idle. Good luck.
@JohnnyRebel1776 yeah mine will be dim at first after the car warms up then it will eventually just stay on. But it's charging and everything is working properly
