  • This 12 volt VW Beetle generator has been sitting around in a barn and out in a field since the 80's. It is off a engine from I think 1968. I did not do anything to the generator other then blow it out with air. This generator is wired the same way my 6 volt generator is wired without the regulator on it. My 6 volt generator will not run as a DC motor nor will it generate any voltage at this time. I am hoping by doing this test I will be able to figure out what is wrong with my 6 volt generator.

Thanks for sharing!! I just tested an old generator that gas been standing for a long time.. I also used a drill but it only put out 0,8 V… Did not know I have to polarize it like that!!! 🙏🏻

This is great information. One point to consider is that a generator will put out varying amounts of voltage depending on the speed. So, your drill will probably need to be producing something like 1200 - 1500 RPM before you will see the 14V output you are looking for. That range is a bit of a guess. It may need to be closer to 2K or more.

I’m going to try that method with the drill before I put my new generator on….!

Shouldn't this thing hit like 35 VDC output ? 8 V seemed to be the max here. Yea, I have the red light on and that's It' time to fix it, even it means pulling the engine from the bus and converting to an alternator.... we are not stopping until it's over.

Does this work on an alternator?

you don't have to polarize an alternator.
