Max's Volvo could be locked and unlocked by hitting the door around the lock cylinder, because the failing insulation on the wires caused a short. It's an easy fix, and you just reinsulate the wires. I like to cut them about halfway and resolder there once I replace insulation or splice in a whole new wire.
The window switches also get clogged up and stop working. Since you have to remove the master switch to get the door panel off, it seems like a perfect time to fix that sticking window switch!

Everyone, check your windows rocker switch first if you suspect the power window motor is dead. One of the ballbearing in mine simply moved out of position. Followed this videos steps on how to repair the switch, now the window is working great once again. Now what to do with my window motor I ordered. Keep it as a spare I guess...thanks David!

Awesome, window would go down but not up, just a warn switch, this helped me fix it and get it going in less than 30 minutes.

A couple of points worth noting:
1 Don't dismantle the window switch anywhere near a drain or an inaccessible hole in the ground, if you drop something it WILL go straight down said drain or hole and then you'll be looking for another switch...
2 You can probably expect to see this sort of wiring deterioration on any European vehicle made after the late '80s as after that point European motor manufacturers were forced to use a much higher percentage of recycled material in making the insulation material and it took some time to get the formulation and method right to the point where the insulation was as strong as the stuff made from new material. Naturally the problem tends to show up first on wiring in the engine bay due to the higher temperatures it is exposed to, but if you live somewhere that experiences high temperatures, or very low temperatures you will find that eventually the wiring insulation will start to break down and crumble away and you'll start getting all sorts of electrical problems, and if it happens on a high current draw circuit (such as heated windows or ventilation fan) there is a risk of it causing an electrical fire...

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. What is the middle switch with two dots for ? I have 1993 Volvo 240 and my central locks only works when the ignition key is activated. Unlocking the front door will not activate central lock , and can’t figure out what the issue is.

Grease in the switch. Would that attract dust and dirt etc.?

David Tomalty Thanks for watching. the only way to remove those is cut the rubber out on either side and press the windows out carefully. unless it's like a 740 and they're glued in. in that case, a heat gun

Hey David, just got into an 82 240 that I am looking to fix up for my sister. I jumped from battery and confirmed that both motors have power, but still no operation from switches. Any typical areas to check before I break out the voltmeter and start tracing wires?

    • @DavidBello

@@DavidBello I figured that might be the case, thanks for getting back to me. one quick clarification- if one of the switches is bad (i.e. passenger side has no switch at all), is the system inoperable, like a closed loop system with a hole? Sorry, do not have wiring diagram. If you have suggestions for where to find one, that would be greatly appreciated.

@@dankbank666 wish I could do that but not scrapyards near by let alone old volvo's. I did just pull the doors off of a parts car so I'm hoping I can get it working with those parts. Cleaned my switches, and the switch for the one window that wont work gets really hot so I'm thinking its my regulator.

I tried this but the passenger window is still not working. One day, I had someone in the car and she opened the window. I said "close it quick" I didn't want it stuck open. So, it's definitely a short somewhere.

David, can you tell me where the power steering fluid reservoir is located on a 1987 Volvo 4d wagon? Please? Thanks

    • @DavidBello
      @DavidBello  7 лет назад +1

I think it is either part of the pump on that year, or next to it with 2 short hoses attached. If it's a 240, then on the driver side

David Bello Thanks again,, for replying. The Volvo is basically a gift from my niece. It needs work, but she didn't want to loose it. So she gave it to me, no strings. They manual that came with it in the glove box says 1981, and I know it's an '87. I want to get the Haynes repair manual for the 240 series. Do you think it's a good book to work from? I can do basic things repair wise. Money of course is the main problem. My late husband wanted me to feel comfortable with working on cars so I wouldn't be a"victim" of shady dealings. I can change brake pads, oil filters, air filters, batteries, tires, and even radiators. My main problem is strength. Tires are just so big. Lol
I helped him a lot simply because he couldn't get his sausage shaped fingers into small places. I even changed a harmonic balancer because his hand wouldn't fit between it and the radiator, lol I only fit laying on my back, hand over my head doing it by feel. lol
Sorry for the life story. If I need advice in future can I buzz you? Thanks again. The Widow Kat from Vegas.

Absolute novice here --- would love to see video showing 'maintenance' on interior of door once panel is moved ... with info about 'what to use' . And the cut and splice you described? Would be awesome to see that as well. Now - really dumb question --- how do I know what NEW wire to buy?

Try cleaning switches first. Relays should audibly click if the switch works but the problem is elsewhere
