Def oversharing here, but 6 months ago, I tried to end my life. James' analogy of kicking legs off a table is so true...take your mental health seriously as soon as the table starts to wobble. In the time since, I've reflected a lot, covering every single thing he mentions in this video and I'm genuinely in awe at how on point he is. These are the changes I needed to make, and didn't. For anyone reading this, the consequences of ignoring this stuff until it's too late are like you can't imagine, even with all the help and support in the world. It's financial, it's professional, it's so uncomfortably personal. This video is the resource to turn to again and again when you feel your mental state slip.Great work @jamessmithPT

I like that you boldly shared your story man. It's not oversharing - it could save a life. You never know when someone who's in a dark place might be inspired by hearing your story, ie. "if he can get himself back from the edge, maybe I can too".

    • @dm1978
      @dm1978 10 месяцев назад +8

Definitely not oversharing mate. Being over 50, I find that so many of the younger ones around me think that, like you, they're one of the very few that are feeling that way and, because of that, you won't find someone who would understand. Then guys like you show up with their story.
Yes, it's good to have boundaries with what you share and to whom, but on forums like this where like-minded people come (along with the anonymity of a username), it can really help so many who are at that crossroads where you were. Never underestimate the power of a positive story coming out of a dark place.
It's not an overstatement to tell you that you've just impacted a lot of people all over the world.

Breaking up with my ex was the best thing that ever happened to me. I met an amazing woman 8 months after I started just focusing on myself. We’ve dated for a year now.
But the key part of everything was realizing that piece wasn’t the right fit for my overall puzzle. It sounds like you have clarity now, and are better after the bruising symptoms of breakup and other stuff, but now that you have a clear-headed ness… I think a year from now for you, you will be pretty happy it all happened like it did. Because all of those negatives will turn in to some great wisdom.
You know what doesn’t work, so that directs you to what might work very well for you.

    B) Plan your finances for a long time not a good time.

I found your channel at just the time where I am in the process of doing the things you are talking about for almost a year, it is nice to have that validation.
The change in my mood, motivation and body that I have experienced from builidng the habit of excercise is immensely positive. Before, I had to push myself to work out, now it feels harder to not get that jiu jitsu session, run or climbing in during the day. The thing that changed was that I signed myself up for a marathon - I knew I had no chance of finishing it unless I follow the workout plan. The joy from finishing and pride from following the 6 month training program fuels me still 2 months later, now it has become a part of my character. What followed from that was tracking nutrition and feeling healthier, being more sociable and open with people, quitting porn and feeling like the brain is going through a rewiring.
Still have work to do in the relationship department and finding the work that I truly 100% enjoy, but these videos help with the future outlook. Thank you

Being able to go to Asia and get pissed every day at 23 suggests that you already started at other people's finish line: a financial cushion. Don't give advice on "unscrewing" your life if you had cheat codes.

Spending nearly 3 years back in the UK after traveling for nearly 5 years and 2 of them in Aus and watching this even tells me more how much unhappy it makes me feel. Heading back to Aus next year at the prime age of 34 with the goal of citizenship. This has made me want to push it harder than ever. Booshh.

I would add, that write up a list of what pisses you off during your normal day life that is within your control, causing you headache, annoyance, depression etc..., and then put them in order of least annoying to most annoying, mark them, and now put them in order by how easy it is to solve these, from easiest to hardest, and work your way through the list.
Starting with the easy ones will give you the feeling of success, accomplishment, and will give you the will to go to the next item on your list, and you build yourself up to be able to tackle the more difficult things.
    Enjoy bettering yourselves!

The only thing I'd change is the opening few sentences. Just to remind you and everyone watching, you weren't a fuck up (and neither are you reading this....unless you are a fuck up.) You were 23. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have taken a longer time being that fuck up. But, solid video man. It's refreshing to have your perspective on the world. So many polar views and extreme ideas for clicks and views on the internet these days. You're just here keeping it real, being honest, no bullshit, no false opinions or misinterpreted "studies". It's awesome to see.

There was one timeless bit of info in the book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". In it, Kyoski described wealth as a measure of time. Take your assets, divide by your monthly expenses. The more months you can go without having to work, the closer you are to being wealthy. Once your assets will pay your bills forever without working, now you're wealthy. So you can chase making more money, learn to be happy with fewer expenses, or most likely a combo of both of those.

Honestly, the best video I’ve watched in awhile. Definitely needed this video.
I’ve been struggling to find the in between the latest year or so. I’ve reached a path in my adult life were I feel like I’ve lost a bit of my identity. Always been an active dude and had always been generally, a lot happier. Now in my working career, I’m 36. I want a deeper relationship with family and friends and evaluating myself.
My biggest take away from this was respecting your sleep and the difference between happiness and pleasure. Thank you ✌🏼

I watched this video in November and immediately put on shorts and shoes and went for my first run ever. Right now I'm coming close to being able to run 5km without a break, I've started going to the gym for weight training a few times a week and my diet and attitude towards food and alcohol have completely changed. I'm losing weight and gaining muscle, I'm sleeping better and I feel so much more energetic and confident. The best part is, it still only feels like the start, can't thank you enough James, this video fucked me up in the best way.

This video is what I needed. I've seen a few videos titled like this and honestly they go to the extreme. Delete all this, do that, be in bed by 9 AM, get up at 4 AM, get everything done before everyone is waking up bla bla bla. Same old shit that will make you feel so incredibly guilty for having a rest day, having a holiday, buying something that you maybe shouldn't as a treat to yourself, dopamine detoxes, the list goes on.
Encorporate everything into your life, naturally with balance and you'll be doing just fine. About 4 years ago I weighed over 24 stone and was incredible unhealthy. I started muay thai, lifting weights, then BJJ and running. Now I weight about 12 stone.
I've since launched my own muay thai / fitnesswear clothing brand, I've been learning a language, I still train atleast 5-6 times a week. I've had a couple of weekends recently where I've just chilled and played a bit of COD. Done nothing on my brand and because of the content I was consuming, I just felt so incredibly guilty for having a bit of a rest day or a weekend off.
For anyone reading this you're going to have stints of overwhelming productivity and you're going to have periods where you just don't feel upto it. It's totally normal. I can go a week or so wihout working on my brand but it's still going to grow, just a little bit slower. Then the next time I work on it I'll probably double down.
Today's soceity and content trends are almost forcing you to think you have to be grinding and working on something 24/7. Listen to James Smith, it's all about balance and we need to give less of a shit of what people around us think and just be happy.

Lots of video games - particularly agree with your statements on sleep, walking (which should also absolutely be done after dinner - you’ll sleep better as well), values and exercise. What I would say is this - I’m now 41, and used to spend far too much time as a younger man playing video games and generally wasting time. What you need to do is get a direction you can be comfortable with and stick to it. When you do that, you start seeing how positively reinforcing it is on every level and what you’ll find is a lot of the time you used to spend activities that effectively just pass the time, just aren’t interesting to you anymore. I had a Playstation 4 in my 30s and was still playing them as “a reward” in the way James describes, but at a certain point I realised I didn’t even want to play them anymore because video games just felt like such a waste of time. So yeah, get yourself into postively reinforcing cycles and you’ll find you’ll probably look more forward to a workout than you ever would playing video games.

Well, I agree on the dating apps experience. Unfortunately I haven't had any success when meeting women through activities either. My understanding now is that some people aren't meant to have relationships. As long as I can hit the gym and work on my personal projects, I'll do fine.

I was struck by your mention of ‘some people aren’t meant to have relationships’. This is exactly how I felt until literally this last week, but I have realised it’s a story I tell myself to excuse my lack of them/failure of previous ones. If it’s something YOU want, please don’t limit yourself or imbed that story in your psyche, I’m saying this as a cautionary tale, not a shining example! I wasted decades of my life believing this about myself, hoping that you don’t have to!

I feel guilty every time I splash out as I know what it cost me to earn that. Honestly, this sometimes leaves me demotivated. This video is amazing, I feel like these are all things which deep down I knew I had to improve but I am surrounded by people who seem to completely ignore these things. I used to have a sense of self loathing because I always told myself (and was affirmed by others) that I don't need to improve my physical health, I don't need to work on myself, I can be happy without working towards a better me. But over the last half a year or so I have come to a sort of realization that this is a lie, an illusion, a delusion designed to ignore our basic human need to improve ourself through hard work. Your channel, amongst many others, have certainly helped me realize that being a better version of myself is far more achievable than I realized. Training, having a healthy diet, abstaining from harmful behaviors are all things which seemed very far from reality for me, but over the last few months I have picked my shit up and started doing them. For what it's worth, I sincerely thank you.
