These are pretty great. I ordered a kit, I'm wildly in over my head, unbelievably so really, and this video has been a true help. Keep it up. I'm counting on you!
Michael Kaplan that’s too much pressure haha! You’ll do great. Between my videos, Adam at ‘a guy doing stuff’, and canoecraft, you should have everything you need.
I noticed one strip fractured, people the steam wood for a living back up the wood with a metal strap. stems on canoes are a vestige of the days when you needed to tack canvas to the boat and cover the ugly seam with an outer stem, when fiberglass came along the stems should have gone by the wayside but they were held onto by people that wrote books, and so here we are today in 2022 with people still using stems. i like an outer stem for its looks but i also like the stemless look it's refined and dignified. That's it I just wanted people to know there is another way to do it. Yours looks good with a vestigial stem.
What size and how many of each c-clamp do you recommend having at a minimum? I'm an hour+ away from my nearest HD, and Amazon is multiple days wait for delivery, so I don't want to be one clamp short of what I need.
Hi Andy what kind of wood did you use for the stems? And did you have to run it through a thickness planer? I'm about to go through this step and I don't have a planer. Just wondering!
Owen I did not use a planer for this. The strips are narrow, so I was able to re-saw them on my table saw. Anywhere that was rough I think I sanded them very lightly just to get rid of the worst roughness and ensure I’d have decent glue contact. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have other questions.
Im about to start, just did the cuts for my strong back.. great content man. thanks!
Thanks for watching! Good luck to you!

Correct, I was fortunate to have steamed an extra piece if I recall (it’s been a long time).

I’d think you need at least 12 with a 3” opening min
