Cedar Strip Canoe Build #10: Moving an Unfinished Canoe
This is my tenth video in a series of videos on how to build a cedar strip canoe. This video focuses on my attempt to move an unfinished / not full strength canoe. I certainly planned and hoped to have the canoe finished after my one year stay in Missouri with the Army, but life happens. If you hang around until the end, I discuss the delay process in depth. We all have competing demands in our lives, but I honestly attribute my delay to lack of confidence. If anything is unclear after watching the video, please feel free to leave a comment below. What are your thoughts on making the cradle legs height-adjustable? I'm 6'2" and my adult son/helper is 6'4". Easy enough to do, but would it be worth the effort?

I made a few mods. 1) I bolted the 1.5" x1.5" station mold braces instead of screwing them so I can take them off (when building a S&G kayak with plywood). I labeled each brace to their respective spot on the strongbuck to make it easier when reassembling. 2) at 4:00 I cut a vertical slot in the leg spacer piece and used bolts that went through leg-spacer-leg so that I can lift any of the 4 corners since I will be moving the strongbuck around my shop with an uneven floor. Kind of a poor man's leveling feet.

Andy, thanks SO MUCH for making this video! I am a recently retired 60-year guy who has had the dream of making a cedar strip canoe in my brain since I first saw one glide past me on a Wisconsin trout stream when I was a kid. I was awestruck at its beauty and grace, and thought that someday, I would make one. Well, 3 kids and almost 40 years of career later, I now have the time and money to do this. I recently purchased the Canoecraft book, but couldn't make it past page 10 because it was such a slow read. So, I started searching RUclips a week ago and came across some great videos, but none that started from Square 1, which is building the strongback table - thank you! Your directions are clear, and your video is no-nonsense. I'm going to go bang one out and get going!

How much sway and rockiness does this table have with each half of the table almost free except for the bottom connection? Thanks

  • @robertbolding4182

I noticed one strip fractured, people the steam wood for a living back up the wood with a metal strap. stems on canoes are a vestige of the days when you needed to tack canvas to the boat and cover the ugly seam with an outer stem, when fiberglass came along the stems should have gone by the wayside but they were held onto by people that wrote books, and so here we are today in 2022 with people still using stems. i like an outer stem for its looks but i also like the stemless look it's refined and dignified. That's it I just wanted people to know there is another way to do it. Yours looks good with a vestigial stem.
