Weaving a Cane Seat (Ep 16 - Cedar Strip Canoe Build)

- In this video I show how I weave cane on the seats I made for my cedar strip canoe. The last 20 seconds of the video is time lapse of the weaving process - watching that a couple times might make the process make more sense...
Process:
Soak the strands of cane in room temperature water for about 15 minutes before you weave with them. Soaking them makes them more flexible and also a little bit stretchy. When the cane dries it will tighten up a little bit where ever you weave it. If you soak it for more than a half an hour I’ve heard the cane starts to discolor.
LAYER 1 is a vertical layer. Start in the middle and leave about 4 inches hanging down from where you start. Pull the cane across (shiny side up) and put it in the corresponding hole across from where you started. Feed it down that hole, up the hole next to it, across to the other side, and continue like this to one side of the seat. Then go back to where you started and feed it the other side.
LAYER 2 is a horizontal - pretty much the same as the first layer - just lay it right on top.
LAYER 3 is a repeat of layer 1 only this time put it slightly to the right of the first layer.
LAYER 4 is when you start weaving. Weave over layer 3 and under layer 1.
LAYER 5 is the first diagonal layer. I don’t think it matters if you weave over the horizontal strands and under the vertical strands or vice versa. For my weave I went over the vertical and under the horizontal.
LAYER 6 is the last layer. You weave the opposite diagonal pattern than you did for layer 5.
Bind the edges with the wider cane. I think I used 4mm wide cane. Stick an end into one of the corner holes, then on a hole next to it, make a loop with the 3mm cane and synch the binding cane down. Then use the same 3mm cane to make a loop on the next hole. Continue like this around the entire seat.
Tie the loose ends underneath the seat.

Here are a couple good resources to learn more about Cedar Strip Canoe Building:
www.amazon.com/Canoecraft-Ill... - “Canoecraft” is the cedar strip canoe building bible. Buy it and read the whole book before you start building.
forum.woodenboat.com/ - This site is actually really helpful. Usually if I type a specific boat building question into google a previous forum post from the Woodenboat Forum is near the top. You can also post your own questions.
www.instructables.com/id/Build... - This guy (Jim Clem) made a very detailed step-by-step guide to cedar strip canoe building. There are a lot of helpful process explanations for some of the trickier parts of building. I used his blog a lot while building my first canoe.
Feel free to comment on this video if you have any questions! Thanks for watching!

Rocked it. Nice job. That looked really easy until you started. It got easier watching you. Thanks. I think I can do this.
Que lo explique en español
Thanks for posting, my wife loved the video and now will be obsessed with caning for awhile! Thanks!
Brett Wyrick 👍🏽
Excellent video. Just the facts, no BS, and clearly shown and explained. Thanks!!
Thank you, that is a good starting point for me to attempt my first rattan re-caning project
Love you bro. ❤ That's a one of the finest cane weaving tutorial. Excellent 👍🏼
this channel is great. exactly what I'd like to build with my old man.
Hi, I love your video! It's amazing how easy the technique is! I can't wait to put it into practice! Thank you so much! Greetings from Argentina.
It's awesome dude... thanks for sharing your skill...
Wow! That was so easy to follow and looks so impressive! Thank you!
Excellent instruction on how to. You did a beautiful job which I trust will last for a long time.
Great video, thx vm. Super helpful. Ready now to confidently repair an old rocking chair. 👍
This one is the most interesting video for me. Thanks for sharing!
Paul Iştoan thanks! I love this one too!
You did it really well.Glad learning from you.
I'm so glad I came across this, this is a fantastic video! I have a chair that I rescued from the side of the road that I restored but have been too intimidated to cane the square seat. You've given me the confidence to go for it.
Awesome skill. Thank you Adam!
Thanks guy! I'll make one of the first strip canoe here in Brazil with your help!
Thanks for showing this step - others tend to skip the details on this step.
This was cool. I've been interested in doing caning since doing some basket weaving as a kid. Great video!
Thanks Michael!!!
Seu trabalho é maravilhoso.Muito bom assistir os vídeos.
Glaucia e Affonso from Brazil.
Your job is really nice, and you provide good explanation thanks.
Really helpful. I did it. Thank you for clear guidance 🙏
the end result is spectacular
I do the binding using alternate holes, and permanently peg the other alternate holes. I pass the loose end up through the hole to be pegged so that there are no loose end on the underside of the seat and it's much tidier. I put a temporary peg in the back corner hole and do the binding up to the front corner. I put the wide cane into the hole and take the next strip for the front edge. I insert the end into the hole but fold the cane back to the left, peg the hole and then fold the beading cane back and continue with the binding until I reach the next corner. In this way only the peg in the last hole can be seen.
Great video. I have watched this multiple times. I am trying to link your video in my description in my latest video series where i am building a Freedom 17. I started caning one of my seats with regular natural cane and it keeps breaking. Finally at a point of frustration, I have ordered some plastic cane and will try that. Anyway, thanks! This is top notch! Cheers, Chuck
Fantastic video.lover it
Thank you for your videos of building the cedar strip canoe. They are great. Would you consider doing videos of building a plywood canoe? Thanks again and keep up the good work.
It's just ossem iam very happy to see this because no one like this it's very good I have no words to say super bro
Terrific video! - just caned my first canoe seat by following your video and looks great! thanks & keep the great videos coming!
Your very talented and I love your videos
Great video!!!
Great job, very well done. I have some chairs my Grandfather did and always wanted to know how he did the cane seat. Now I know. Scott
The 2 Car Garage Shop that's awesome! Is the cane still good on them? I've weaved cane for my first canoe also and I've been surprised with how durable it is.
The seats are in great shape and at least 50 years old - not sure how old the chairs are but much older
The 2 Car Garage Shop that's crazy! Really cool!
Thank you for a well done video.
Great video! The seat framing I have doesnt have holes drilled in the corners so wondering how to do the pattern in this situation?
Hola miro el vídeo una y otra vez porq estoy interesada en aprender y tú técnica es muy fácil gracias por enseñar.
So nice and perfect
I do chair caning and always check the lie of the growth rings so that the canes doesn't strip when pulling it through on layer 4
Hermoso trabajo…!
Nature Gift in Good Hands 👌✔️👍
Great finish
Damn man, that looks tricky! Looks awesome though. Good job!
SimpleCove thanks man!

Very nice. Thanks
Very nice and useful video 👍 make another this type video
great video!!
Wow that was great - thanks! Do you think it would work with 2mm cord?
Muchas gracias, por este tumoral,me haz ayudado mucho y se que dios multiplicará tus enseñanzas, que dios te bendiga amigo
Your awesome. Just finishing caning the first of two canoe seats. Not my cup of tea. Your work is really outstanding!
The cane work is beautiful. I'm likely leaving beekeeping after a long time. I'm looking for something new and I've done woodworking (built kitchen cabinets, etc.) and I'm looking at building a canoe and kayak to add to my other water craft. You have been doing a fantastic job, especially with your explanations. I'll likely be cutting my own cedar planks. This is so cool. A fun challenge!
Your video is pretty good teacher!!! I really want to make canning chair like that, where can i find that hollow wood foundation?? I have to make the hole???
I studied well and I go well.
Thank you.
South Korea (MASAN)
Parabéns pelo vídeo, consegui entender. Abraço do Brasil!
Sensacional o acabamento e fantástico
Glad that I found you on caning a chair because I have an antique rocker that I inherited and want to cane the bottom seat. However it is curved on the bottom edges and square on the top. Do you have a video for a seat that is not completely square? Love your techniques and will use them. I am refurbishing the rocker and staining it white. Can you spray paint cane on chairs? Thanks!
Does cane need finishing or anything like that? How well does it survive being outside?
How do you calculate how many feet of cane you will need to purchase?
Very nice effort
Awesome! !!
Did you drill the holes in the frame? I am looking for a guide or tutorial on drilling the holes for caning. Any advice?
Thanks for showing this. How long does it take once you've got the hang of if -- but before you're expert at it? It looks like mabe 2 - 3 hours?
Muy bonito trabajo muy limpio
I would like to know if you have or can indicate a complete video teaching this process of stuffing a chair.
Thanks a lot for the class.
We are wood/canvas canoe builders and rebuilders. We call this the 'chair seat weave'. In our 'canoe seat weave' commonly used in Canada (and all our canoes and repairs), we do the first two layers together (the short ones), then the the other two, then the diagonals. It's somewhat easier, you don't 'get lost' as easily. We also do a few other details differently, but not in any important sense.
I've followed the journey through each video. I'd love to one day build my own cedar strip canoe. You have lit the fire to get me going.
Very nice tutorial Adam ! That caning looks cool ! I'd hate to get it wet !
Jim Dodd thanks Jim! Yeah I figure it'll last a couple years and then somebody can replace it with nylon rope or something
Hey just wondering what you seal the cane on your canoe seats with? Do you use varnish or some natural oil? Thanks in advance, currently building a cedar strip canoe myself.
Hello Adam,
The distance between the holes. You say 3/4inch away from each other. Is this from center to center (of the holes) or is it between holes?
Also do you varnish or anything the cane after weaving for protection?
EXCELENT!!!!. Tk!
Thanks for this. Just finished caning a canoe seat. Is there some type of coating to apply to the cane that would keep it from drying out or add some toughness now that it's part of my canoe?
That was very therapeutic to watch, and a realy good Video Thank you.
where do the ends go?
Super helpful
Hello! How to know how many meters of cane I need for my seat? Thank you!
Can the same process be applied for a circle shaped hole?
Donde consigo esas cuñas para ir sosteniendo el junco
Thank you so much, I have to weaving my couch
Puedo utilizar está técnica en sillas de varilla?
How much space did you leave between two holes
Do you treat the cane after you have completed weaving?
This has been an awesome series. I was wondering if one could use that same process, but use a heavy nylon string? I have a composite canoe that I am having to modify in order to paddle it solo and I would like to use some traditional touches with modern materials.
I'm using type1 1/14 Paracord. I've just started and wondering if I'll have enough room in the holes for it all. Time consuming.
Thankyou very much sir
That was a very useful video. I have one doubt though..when the strand goes into the hole and comes out from the next hole, doesn't the shiny side go down?
would you show us how to cane webbed metal scissors?
Thank you so much for the video. I would love to learn how to make cane holes on to a regular old chair back seat-essentially, converting a regular chair into a cane chair. What tools should I use and how to measure, what to consider, etc.. Thank you!
what is the space between the holes?
How much time it takes
Nice work!...Which Is the distance between holes?...thancks
Thank you so much
Sweetness Man!
Guys ye rope ka name kya h kahan se milega?
could u tell equipment's name????
Çok güzel elinize sağlık
Now I have the song "Dream Weaver" by Journey stuck in my head! Thanks for sharing.
Marcel Forget haha dangit. I def should have had that song playing in the backgrounder the video
Dream weaver is not Journey it is Gary Wright. Actually a great cd.
thanks my dear
