Amy, please, cut a fringe into your hair. I'd say bangs but you know it's an aeroplane not an 'airplane' thus you're clearly from a literate country and know what a fringe is. But that sixhead is not a good look, a fringe will turn you from a 3/10 to a 7/10.
Anybody that has not flown a small airplane and has the means to do it, should do it. As for my own recreational experiences, it’s right up there with surfing and flyfishing as a great thrill. I recommend the Cessna 150/152. That Little plane float like a butterfly. Probably nowadays there are even lighter weight versions that are more fun. The smaller the plane, the more fun!
I appreciate anyone who can paddle a good J stroke but when she can also fabricate her own wood canoe from scratch it's humbling. Props! (not just the aviation kind)

How awesome, you have an amazing family and what a story you have to tell your own one day. When I was 7, I got to build a small sailing dinghy with my dad and to sail it almost every week with him till my late teens. I'm 60 now and they are still some of my fondest memories.

I grew up on the rivers of Alaska. My best friend, Mike Caldwell, taught the canoeing merit badge class at Lost Lake Boy Scout Camp in the interior. We were part of the Midnight Sun Council. Watching you build this canoe brought back memories of canoeing with Mike. My wife and I did an eight day canoe trip down Birch Creek from 90 miles up the Steese Highway. The trip was on our first anniversary. We put in up near Eagle Summit and had to portage about a mile to get to the river. From there down to the bridge at 160 mile took 8 days. We had two canoe's, Mike and our friend Steve Olsen were in one canoe and Edy and I were in the other. I'll never forget it, though it was 45 years ago. Mike is gone now, and I miss him. You are blessed to have a family that values you and gives you good outdoor skills and experiences. I noticed your skill in handling the paddle quietly and using a J stroke to correct the direction of the canoe. May you live a long life and pass these values onto your children and grandchildren.

My dad and I made a canoe similar to yours when I was about 13. Ours was 16 feet and weighed about 67 pounds. The ribs were white ash and the planking was red cedar. We covered the outside with canvas and put about 12 coats of lacquer to shrink and make the canoe waterproof. I think the gunwales were white ash. Thanks for a trip down memory lane. That was just an absolute joy to watch and marvel at. Your uncle is an exceptional craftsman... and your enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in the build had me hooked from the thumbnail! When I first moved to New Hampshire in 1999 my first job was with Newfound Woodworks building cedar strip canoes and kayaks. They are really beautiful crafts, strong, functional, light and responsive.

Beautiful boat, but this video is about so much more than a canoe. That was the pinnacle of your Uncle's canoe building career, having a whole month to create a functional work of art with someone he cares so dearly about, shoulder to shoulder. As he continues to build these canoes it will now be a much more lonely affair for him. Yet, he can draw in the memories of having such a wonderful month teaching and working with you to keep him energized. Be sure to call him and your Aunt from time to time, just to say "Hello". That will keep them full of life for many years to come.
Building my first canoe now. This video was one of my main resources, very helpful. One thing I will say to anyone else planning a build if you're using multiple sources of information make sure the techniques are compatible. With the product I wanted I would have saved myself a lot of grief had I been consistent with the methods in this video. Also if you play it at half speed Xyla sounds drunk, but the music always sounds good, might have to buy a cd.
I spent 20 years in Algonkin Park with my father he passed 14 years ago the time you spend with your family in a canoe is nothing short of a miracle thank you for sharing this I’m so happy I watch this not because of the wonderful family experience my heart strings being tugged on just the fact that you know how to paddle I’ve watched so many of these builds Sorry it took me a minute I’ve watched 32 of them you’re the first one I’ve seen that knows how to paddle

I can tell by the way you relate to each other that he is the uncle that taught you to stomp thru the mudpuddles, not only in youthful exuberance but also the Mudpuddles of Life. Kudos on the excellent craftsmanship on display here! As I once was a professional woodworker/cabinet maker, I can certainly relate to taking a pile of raw materials and creating a functional work of art, just as you and your uncle have done so well on this beautiful canoe. Was just planning on enjoying this video that popped up in my feed, but when she mentioned flying an airplane solo for the first time I thought this is a very interesting person and clicked subscribe.
I built one of those! They are remarkably forgiving to building, but you touch each piece of wood like 30 times... ripping strips, routing cove and beads, joining strips, laying each strip... then sanding and fairing.... I LOVE building cedar strip canoes and kayaks!!!!
Very rare special person you are. I saw this vid a while back ( a couple of years I think). Today, somehow your vid making your own camper popped up into my vid to watch. Perhaps because I watched Ame-in-a-van vid - she also made her van. So I watched it, to the very end. Got interested then watched another one: moving to your new workshop. Then saw your vid regarding pageantry 😮! Then, you made a one of a kind base guitar, got your own plane ✈️. Back to this canoe- which you made which made me come back to after seeing it years back. I appreciate ❤ people who are creative. I can think it but my hands can’t build it.
Because he’s lived a happy life. And probably a lot of that has to do with his craftsmanship and the joy he gets from that and rural living, not to mention a wonderful family. And to think that the world of most people will never get to experience rural living! I am as lucky as uncle, my situation looks just like his, and I am so thankful.
I've always been envious of the canoe my uncle built in his garage. It took him awhile, I was young, but whenever we would go to visit, I had to check on that canoes progress. That was 35+ years ago, and he still has that beautiful piece of craftsmanship
Nice build. I made a strip build family canoe out of pine (what I got here in Sweden) 23 years ago. Many nice trips w my kids. Later i build a kayak as well, but in knot free spruce this time. The feeling of paddling a self made canoe cannot be bought for money. It has to be earned and only us builders got to get it.
One thing I really like about this video, and your videos in general, is the pacing. I think it's spot on. the perfect amount of info at the perfect rate. That's not something easily taught. Seems you either know it or you don't. You do!

Their Music is fantastic, his craftsmanship is the envy of almost if not all others, and he obviously loves you. I can tell by the way you relate to each other that he is the uncle that taught you to stomp thru the mudpuddles, not only in youthful exuberance but also the Mudpuddles of Life. Treasure him and gift him a video Camera with the condition that he set and tell it the story of his life.
Kudos on the excellent craftsmanship on display here! As I once was a professional woodworker/cabinet maker, I can certainly relate to taking a pile of raw materials and creating a functional work of art, just as you and your uncle have done so well on this beautiful canoe. If more people had to learn how to fabricate what we want in our lives, the world would be a different (better) place. Reminds me of building radio control airplanes when I was a teenager.... Lots and lots of sanding! You skip on the sanding and it shows not to mention the performance suffers. I learned a lot with this video. Thank you!

I built one of those! They are remarkably forgiving to building, but you touch each piece of wood like 30 times... ripping strips, routing cove and beads, joining strips, laying each strip... then sanding and fairing.... I LOVE building cedar strip canoes and kayaks!!!!

Then saw your vid regarding pageantry 😮! Then, you made a one of a kind base guitar, got your own plane ✈️.

I just realized, in every shot of your uncle he had a smile on his face.
Because he’s lived a happy life. And probably a lot of that has to do with his craftsmanship and the joy he gets from that and rural living, not to mention a wonderful family. And to think that the world of most people will never get to experience rural living! I am as lucky as uncle, my situation looks just like his, and I am so thankful.

I've always been envious of the canoe my uncle built in his garage. It took him awhile, I was young, but whenever we would go to visit, I had to check on that canoes progress. That was 35+ years ago, and he still has that beautiful piece of craftsmanship

Nice build. I made a strip build family canoe out of pine (what I got here in Sweden) 23 years ago. Many nice trips w my kids. Later i build a kayak as well, but in knot free spruce this time. The feeling of paddling a self made canoe cannot be bought for money. It has to be earned and only us builders got to get it.

Fundamental shop rule: You can never have *enough* clamps...
I make a lot of doors, and I don’t need one tenth the amount of clamps, more curves demands more clamps, there’s some formula there for Zeiler and her buddy at veritasium To figure out.
