I built a kayak when I was 15. I 'scrounged' the wood from building sites, at 1am. My father got me canvas and screws from his workplace. My mate also constructed a similar one. We spent a week canoeing from Oxford to Putney along the Thames. One of the memorable things in my youth. 😊
@@capefalconkayakBrian, another great video. Your fingerprints are all over this build from the methods to your old leather steam bending belt to a glimpse of your fingers at 11:53. Hope you are well.
I saw this was 17 minutes long and I thought, hmm, mybe I'll just skip through parts of it. So I started watching at the beginning and 17 minutes later I found that I had watched all of it without skipping anything, lol. :D Lovely video. Very nice kayak. My father and I used to build cedar strip canoes, it ended up being his favorite thing to do, this pots reminded me of the fun we had building then and cedar strip kayaks and floating rivers in Canada and anywhere we could .thanks for the everything. I miss him so
Your attention to detail and perfection is amazing. I've always wanted to build either a kayak or canoe, but life got in the way! Now I'm almost 76, live on a beautiful lake in Texas. I have the time now, but due to military service in Vietnam, I'm too disabled to tackle a project like this. Thanks for sharing your skills. I'm very impressed with your skills.
I wish you a good 2023. Living by a lake, that sounds good. In our kayak club, there's a man with hardly any long capacity left. Pedling on the river is too much. Still, he bought two tiny sailing boats, and during summer we go to a small lake, once or twice a year. Sailing takes maybe half an hour, but who cares? He can be on the water for a while, and that is what's counting.
Wecome home, Brother ! I'm 76 1/2, spent some time in the Tonkin Gulf Yatcht Club on the biggest boat, made it home in pretty good shape. If I lived in Texas, I'd love to help you, and we'd git 'er done. Anyways, welcome home, and I hope you get on the water, like voornaam's talking about.
Mesmerizing in sight and sound… “no words” can explain…. Universal (no language barrier)…The distillation of craft into pure art. The quintessence of SOF building. Thank you!
That is very beautiful love the sounds from making it ,so much nicer than the plastic ones and better for the environment, thankyou liz for letting us in.
A thoroughly satisfying build. I built a sea kayak back in the mid 1980’s in Kodiak. I used a similar approach except I ran the formers longitudinally and covered it in aircraft fabric that I bought in Anchorage. My bow had a whale mouth considered good hunting luck. My how this brings back memories.
looks like fun i haven't made one of these since grade 6 took 5 months to make after school ....at school about 1 1/2 too 2 hour lessons.... 5 days a week
I'm not a boat wright I have built a two man Folbot from a kit. It was my Zen time, this is a whole different level, you understand your materials. I learned more in 17:40 about Kayak building then I have in 35 years since I built my Folbot. Thank you

Super video. I did this in a youth club when I was 14 or 15 with the help of 2 brothers who ran the club in my village. They were both great youth activists and canoeing was a keen interest then. Sadly lost on youth today.
Perhaps this is one of the few videos on RUclips that you can watch completely oblivious to the passage of time. Wise people have said correctly that you can watch the flame burn for an endless time, how water flows and how other people work. But I would paraphrase the final part about work, when someone is lazy or sloppy, it does not please the eye, but rather irritates. Therefore, you can watch for an endless time how the flame burns, how the water flows and how a real master works. Watch and just enjoy the beauty of the process itself. And thanks to your video, I really enjoyed the creation process, which was more like magic. When a craftsman takes the simplest and most easily accessible materials and turns them into a beautiful kayak. And thank you so much for that. 👍🛶🔥💫💥👏⚡
I just watched your video. I’m in awe of your woodworking skills. And not because your a woman. I can appreciate no glue, no nails construction. That Kayak is a thing of beauty
What a great quality video! Liz makes building that boat look easy! Wow fantastic crafteswomanship!! The color is cool too. Also to Brian's credit the way he lays out the course it is very easy and super fun! I built my first F1 a couple of months ago following his course to the tee and mine came out awesome too! (But not as good as Liz's I am sure lol.) I loved the build so much I started building another boat a week before I finished the first one. Haha! But this time I wanted to add my own custom touches and design elements. The funny thing is by doing my own thing that I painted myself into some corners that I didn't see coming. In the first build Brian navigates you though the obstacle course without you realizing it. haha! With that said they weren't anything I couldn't overcome (its is only wood after all.) Anyway I am about finished with the fame on my custom boat and I a super excited to see how it paddles compared to the stock version. (hopefully I didn't screw up the performance too bad.) With that said I was totally surprised at how well the F1 paddles!!! It's amazing! (My experience is I have been paddling sea kayaks for about 10 years and have had quite a few from well known sea kayak brands over those years including a very high end brand.) I think if I still had all the boats I've owned I bet Id still choose the F1 to paddle most of the time over the others for day paddles. I highly recommend that you take this course if you have any interested at all in woodworking and kayaking! This type of woodworking is so enjoyable and relaxing. And when you finished you have a killer performance boat! (I'd love to build another after this I have more ideas I want to try but where am I going to put it? humm? I might have to sell my fiberglass boat?lol)

Really nice build there girl. I love watch makers like u build from scratch with ur bare hands. When I was a young kid growing up in IRELAND we had this programme on TV called Hands. The shows were about ppl in the area who were building things with their hands, hence the name of the show. U had arts and crafts type makers but we saw old men and women building boats for fishing and these boats used some form of covering like this too. I think the reason most of the characters were older in age is bcos these skills had been dying off in the local communities bcos of emigration and such. The fishermen needed the boats to be light frame builds for speed I suppose? I really enjoyed this video. NO MUSIC, JUST REAL SOUNDS OF THE WORKSHOP WHICH IS HOW IT SHOULD BE TBF. I look forward to seeing ur next one soon. TBH I only found ur channel this morning and after enjoying this one I SUB'D & LIKED. Take care and keep making great content like this one. Enjoyed it very much..
…no music, no ranting voiceover, no hype just beautiful, patient craftwork from start to finish. Ahhhh. Perfect
It is called ASMR, and videos with sensory audio like this have become popular in recent years. You can understand why!
From the craft perspective, not speeding, but cutting away the less interesting parts makes the video superb IMHO

YES! Most of the videos today are terribly annoying due to excessive editting additions!
Yes, many half-decent videos are spoilt by "background music" - which is IMHO usually just a form of manufactured aural pollution.
